- jacksons98, on 11/15/2007, -11/+75I'd say PS3 owners have been getting major leaps in graphics almost every month. First Warhawk, then Heavenly Sword, then Ratchet and Clank, this month Uncharted: Drakes Fortune which looks to be the best yet. Can't wait to see what they can get out of PS3 technology in the coming years.
- grat2001, on 11/15/2007, -4/+49If the multi-platform version of COD4 looks this good, I can't wait to see Killzone 2 or Shadow of the Colossus.
- djSyndrome, on 11/15/2007, -5/+49Excellent point. When the PS2 first came out, almost no games ran in progressive scan and texture pop-up was a huge problem. Five years later, Polyphony got it to output 1080i in Gran Turismo 4.
It doesn't do much to solve the short-term lack of software, but the future for the machine does look very bright, indeed. - mywhitenoise, on 11/15/2007, -4/+44Look at the progression from Ratchet to Going Commando to Up Your Arsenal. If there's any second party developer for Sony that i'm going to trust, it's Insomniac.
- xTRUMANx, on 11/15/2007, -6/+42I think a good comparison would be Resistance and its Resistance 2 whenever it comes out. Insomniac has been talking so much about how much awesomeness the SPUs are and how much they've learned as time passed that there ought to be some very major steps forward taken when Resistance 2 comes out. That could be very easy for them since Resistance was a launch title to begin with.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -5/+36I'd love to see a sequel to Shadow of the Colossus on PS3. Team Ico has a great talent for emphasizing art and open-endedness in their games, and I thought Shadow was the best title on the PS2 I ever played. They could craft some insane visuals on new hardware.
- KirbyMeister, on 11/15/2007, -5/+35Lets hope that last leap is over the uncanny valley and not straight into it.
- Dropperbr, on 11/15/2007, -6/+35Fanboy at its best!
- macromorgan, on 11/15/2007, -14/+42The Xbox 360 can't handle Rachet & Clank. There. I said it.
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -5/+27Theres one game that i hope will amaze us and use the PS3's full power, GTA IV.
- readme, on 11/15/2007, -8/+29The 360's flagship title (Halo3) can't even run 720p and has to be upscaled from a non-standard resolution.
- Fredtheviking, on 11/15/2007, -3/+23Speak for yourself. I love great graphics.
- fani, on 11/15/2007, -5/+25Graphics is part of the FUN
- John213, on 11/15/2007, -5/+25It's not a sign of a bad architecture, it's a sign that the architecture is different. Developers don't just magically know how to develop on every platform :-)
- Snowspot, on 11/15/2007, -7/+27Most Xbox360's can't handle being turned on lol, what was the failure rate again? Hey the 360 might have better games... but MS is losing millions too because of their shoddy and cheap hardware... also they sell controllers for 60 bucks when they cost 11 to make XD
- creep303, on 11/15/2007, -1/+20CoD4, has seriously been the best FPS I've played in a while.
- Hickeroar, on 11/15/2007, -2/+21I've noticed this very same thing. The PS3's graphics in games have been rapidly advancing. I'm pretty pumped to see what's coming.
- NiGHTSChao, on 11/15/2007, -10/+29I think the one thing people never really took into account was the fact that the PS3 had 360 graphics levels at launch, and people were quick to ponder which had the better visuals, even though the PS3 was extremely close to the 360's visuals at launch, and the 360 needed time to get to the point its at right now
- jacksons98, on 11/15/2007, -3/+21360 is getting exclusive episodic content, but Rockstar said they are planning extra content for PS3 as well. Kind've sucks for Microsoft they paid Rockstar $50 million for exclusive content, then Rockstar comes out and says PS3 will also get extra content. Either way both will have extra content.
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -1/+17COD4 looks awesome (not exclusive but hey!).
- j.carcinogen, on 11/15/2007, -3/+20Every console gets 'better visuals' as it matures and developers learn more effective ways to program on the platform.
- andydumi, on 11/15/2007, -3/+20Not if MS stops them from using a hard drive... We know they paid to have an identical game across platforms, which is why Sony is getting 2 separate exclusive games from Rockstar, that are not constrained by MS deals and lacking hardware in any way. Can you imagine being that dev and having to beg to be allowed to force the use of a hard drive, knowing the other console has no issues, but you aren't allowed to take advantage of it?
- NiGHTSChao, on 11/15/2007, -6/+22Boring and repetitive motions and controls don't make a game either
You have to combine graphics with sound, story, depth, replayability, creativity and everything else all into one thing
Get your head out of your ***** ass and realize that developers don't "make a game" solely for one single reason (in your thoughts, graphics) - Hickeroar, on 11/15/2007, -3/+19lol. it's 2007. add four years to that.
- jacksons98, on 11/15/2007, -7/+23And if they do they will give the finger to all the current Xbox fans on day one. Just like they did with the first generation owners. Go Microsoft right??
Personally I like that Sony tries to build into their units a long life cycle, not everyone wants to buy a new console every few years. - xaxxon, on 11/15/2007, -1/+17They actually made money last quarter. Mostly on the sales of Halo 3.
- krische, on 11/15/2007, -3/+18Well, Killzone comes out in februrary, so i guess we'll see.
- dmsean, on 11/15/2007, -14/+28500 MORE SHADES OF BROWN
- AntBing, on 11/15/2007, -4/+18I have a PS3 and a Wii. I recently moved to a new house and the Wii never made it out of the box. Meanwhile the PS3 was one of the first things connected once I got the TV in, and the Lay-z-boy in place.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -5/+19Fun means something different for everyone. The fun of being immersed in a game might go hand-in-hand with the visual fidelity of one title, or to someone else it might mean waving a controller in the air like a stick. Its totally subjective, at any rate.
- vagarach, on 11/15/2007, -3/+17Take a look at the hardware design of the 360, it is very much a modern, next generation platform, regardless of its graphics capabilities.
- Snowspot, on 11/15/2007, -7/+20Dude shut up, since when has gameplay been the only factor in a game? Even back in the NES days there was a graphics category. You want fun? Stop spending your time bitching cause other people care about art and presentation.
All the PS3 has is great graphics? Do you not see the lack of logic in that statement? So if graphics are good gameplay is bad?
You really do all of us PS3 owners a favor when you don't buy one, I'd rather the console not be aimed at casuals. - TicTacAtak, on 11/15/2007, -8/+21Can't wait to receive a PS3 from Santa next month! I have no problem dropping money on playstation 3 games...the Wii would sit in the corner collecting dust if not for its ability to be moded so easily and quickly, the majority of games are just that bad.
- drizzlelicious, on 11/15/2007, -4/+17God of War II? Final Fantasy XII.
- jackal42, on 11/15/2007, -8/+21This is the kind of guy, that would let bill gates ***** him in the ass, and then pay £20,000 for the service
- hockey, on 11/15/2007, -0/+13Not really. Back in the days of the 16 bit era some of the best games for the Genesis and the SNES came towards the end of the lifespan because by then developers had figured out how to squeeze every bit of processing power out of those systems to make truly beautiful 16 bit games
- hockey, on 11/15/2007, -5/+18See THAT is the proper response to the "gameplay over graphics" drivel. Man the whole argument has become so idiotic that some people just sprout it off like sheeple on autopilot whenever a graphics discussion comes along without even thinking.
We all know that graphics aren't EVERYTHING but there is nothing wrong with wanting and enjoying a game that looks good and pushes the technology and hardware forward in a new way. There are plenty of ways to appreciate graphic innovation. Carmacks pioneering use of BSP trees, Epic's use of CSG technology, pixel and vertex shaders etc. All of these are GOOD for the industry as a whole.
Crysis is a perfect example. That game looks AWESOME and it's good for the industry that a game like that is being produced because it pushes the industry FORWARD. - jacksons98, on 11/15/2007, -4/+16Lair, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank have all shown PS3 can outperform X360. Eurogamer just reviewed Uncharted and said they don't think it's possible on X360 and that Uncharted beats Gears in terms of graphics and detail.
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=87 ...
"Truly, Uncharted is the first game I've seen to date that makes me wonder if it could be done on the Xbox 360, and as a huge admirer of the software line-up on Microsoft's system, that's saying a lot."
"Talking of environments, it's hard to think of a single game that's ever included such lush and staggeringly detailed gaming environment. As much as Gears of War provided a stunning next-generation shooter setting, the moody greys and browns made it a harsh, dark, hostile, and monochromatic place to be. In Uncharted, it's not just superior to Gears in terms of out and out detail, but brings a feel-good factor with the sheer level of environmental variety on offer. Covering the full spectrum from 'destroyed beauty' to lush, tropical jungles (and all points in between), it has the kind of action adventure template that Eidos and Crystal Dynamics must be looking at with a great deal of envy right now." - Hickeroar, on 11/15/2007, -6/+18Not really true anymore. If ANYTHING they're neck and neck with a ever-so-slight edge going to the PS3 in some of the newer exclusives. Don't label me a fanboi; I've got both systems and have done plenty of looking myself. 360 fanboys are haughty and condescending. PS3 fanboys are arm waving idiots. People need to clam up and look for themselves.
- cobrapeed, on 11/15/2007, -4/+16one major thing that people aren't bringing into account when comparing which system is superior is the media used. The xbox 360 uses DVD while the PS3 is blu-ray compatible. They've already gotten to the point (Assassin's Creed) in which the DVD has maxed its capacity and content had to be removed to fit the entire game on a single disc. Don't worry about the architecture our other technology in that respect, look at the media. programmers have already been able to max out the capacity of a DVD and its still an early race.
- throwingks, on 11/15/2007, -7/+19Not according to Peter Moore. He says next Xbox won't be out till at earliest 2011.
- peeinian, on 11/15/2007, -4/+15HAHAHA Now that is some optimistic thinking. Also, I would like to know how you enjoy dropping another $400-$500 on another XBOX in 4 months. Please keep me updated.
- Zettabyte, on 11/16/2007, -2/+13Does anyone remember at 360 launch, I think gamespot did a comparison between the original xbox and the 360 launch games, and how they are virtually identical. Then fast forward to the PS3 launch, one of it's launch titles RFOM was compared to Gears of War.
- NiGHTSChao, on 11/15/2007, -4/+14I dont think you understand what I just said...
- macromorgan, on 11/15/2007, -3/+13Their plans for the PlayStation Eye intrigue me. Eye of Judgement looks cool (though it's not my type of game). Little Big Planet's plans for user generated content is something new to the console universe. The use of mods on Unreal Tournament III is a first for a console.
It's ignorant of the facts to state that they are not focusing on or looking to improve gameplay, and solely focusing on graphical improvements. - Hickeroar, on 11/15/2007, -1/+11You can gripe about how unimportant graphics are all you want, but they are STILL important. Good graphics will not save a crappy game, and often times a great game can fail due to bad graphics (system shock 2 for the first example that comes to mind). No one wants to take a step BACKWARDS in either category.
- Shirk, on 11/15/2007, -3/+13It's not bad architecture, it's familiarity with the system and how to get the most out of it. If you've ever seen/played any original Xbox or PS2 game and compared them to Halo 2 and God of War II, you'll see that there's a huge improvement with no hardware changes. Developers just learn how to work the system better after spending more time with each system.
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -1/+11If someone thinks McDonalds is the greatest food in the world, it does make it true to them. Should we judge the quality of food based on what we think is relevant to all foods? YES! You don't need to agree with the consensus on something to enjoy it, it only matters what you enjoy. You can go ahead and call the person unenlightened if you want, but you can't tell someone that they're lying to themselves just because they don't enjoy the same things you do!
- andydumi, on 11/15/2007, -1/+11Sure gameplay is important, but graphics are as well. I think Ratchet, Uncharted, and Heavenly Sword have shown that you can most definitely have both. The idea is not to leave anything behind, be it graphics, sounds, gameplay, storyline or whatever. Give them the possibility and let the devs decide whether they want high tech graphics, sound or not along with the gameplay.
As to what dominates, it depends on the game. In Guitar Hero, sound arguably dominates, as its the centerpiece of the whole game. The gameplay is so simple (push the right button at the right time), that its arguably antiquated. In some games its the graphics that are the centerpiece, and in others its all about the innovative gameplay and interactivity. Devs can choose whatever they want, depending on what their vision is.
Much like movies or restaurants, where its the chefs/directors imagination that should be the limit. If the director wants to make a black and white movie, or a silent film, its his choice and that does not make it bad inherently. If the chef wants to perfect the hamburger or the mashed potato, let him go for it, that does not make him a bad chef.
The idea is to be able to give as many tools and choices to the dev as you can and see what he can come up with. In this case, we see a dev that constantly improves sound, graphics and gameplay, and does not slack on any of the areas. And as gamers, its to our benefit. Would Ratchet be as much fun on the PS2? It would have the same gameplay to a certain extent, but no, it would be missing the jaw dropping graphics, the motion controlled portions of the game and so forth. - triplehelix, on 11/15/2007, -1/+10yeah and the ps3 will be selling at ps2 prices, and ps2 numbers, and sony will be rolling out the ps4.
