Kojima So Not Disappointed With MGSIV
kotaku.com — When Hideo Kojima said the MGS4 graphics on PS3 weren't to his "satisfaction" or that he realized there were lots of "restrictions" the PS3 posed, he didn't mean it. He meant to compare it and his game to a flying car. Even if a flying car doesn't make it into space, it's still revolutionary. "I wanted to convey my thoughts like that," he says.

As I said earlier, I submitted the story to Kotaku that started this whole thing and to this day I believe that what Kojima said only proves his greatness as a gaming visionary, and is not saying that the PS3 is a bad console.- bluerei, on 05/12/2008, -1/+15"I submitted the story to Kotaku that started this whole thing"

XBox - family meal at home
Ps3 - eating sushi, with a naked supermodel, in the back seat of a limo.- ericrous, on 05/12/2008, -14/+21I have a PS3. I would say his analogy is appropriate only if you hate sushi, the supermodel is a dude, and the limo keeps backfiring.

- kingmanic, on 05/12/2008, -23/+74I think the rampant defensiveness of kotaku to be silly. They hyped an angle on a sentence which played well to it's audience but seemed to be wrong. Originator of sentence advised that wasn't his intent. Not much more to be said. He mentions some stuff about America and bragging, but in general Americans are one of the most belligerent braggarts there are. You did not win WWI the Russians did, you didn't win WWII the Russians did, most of your inventions came from immigrants, most of your smartest researchers are immigrants, etc... America does have that reputation.Kojima isn't even being very confrontational when he mentions it but kotaku is sure playing that angle up.
- Metahero, on 05/12/2008, -1/+37I somewhat agree with this, but it's not just Americans. Culturally speaking, especially in the business world, western cultures emphasise bragging about your achievements, confidence, and the importance of youth among other things. In Asian cultures though, being humble and silent is respected and highly regarded in the business community. This is something you will learn about if you ever study commerce in school.
- gentlemanjack, on 05/12/2008, -21/+3As an american, I think we're the most humble nation in the whole wide world. ;-) (come on...even used a lower case "a")
Or am I just humble about not being humble?
Can someone not from the US explain, because I'm getting a headache.

- 1gunners4, on 05/12/2008, -14/+7Why did your comment turn into a random America hate-fest?The main reason the Allies won WWII was because of Hitler's stupidity and complete disregard for his General's advice.
- CarzorStelatis, on 05/12/2008, -4/+4And the Allies' complete lack of understanding of the correct use of the apostrophe, it would seem.
- Andrwmorph, on 05/12/2008, -1/+6Congrats! You caught an insignificant grammatical error! Too bad you chose to draw attention to it and made yourself look like a complete ***** :'(
- CarzorStelatis, on 05/12/2008, -4/+4And the Allies' complete lack of understanding of the correct use of the apostrophe, it would seem.
- daizaru, on 05/12/2008, -6/+28The ALLIES won the war. Russia couldn't win the war on their own... Nobody should get sole credit. I was going to digg you up because Kotaku is being childish in their retort, but I dugg you down for stupidity.
- kingmanic, on 05/12/2008, -12/+9You may want to read up on it. In first one Russia took a massive toll on Germany and then stopped as internal issues halted their war effort, Then Britain, Canada and the states went in to clean up. In WWII Russia was well on it's way to conquering Germany and most of Europe as well. Britain, and it's allies started another front as much to defeat Germany as to prevent a soviet Europe. In WWII on the pacific theater it was mostly America but many other nation contributed but are never acknowledged in American media or education(The communists and Nationalist Chinese did drain a lot of the Japanese resources in Manchuria and coastal China. Filipino guerrillas made the Philippines unpleasant for the Japanese etc...)
- 1gunners4, on 05/12/2008, -2/+15Russia was getting crushed until the Soviet Winter aided in halting the Germans. Had Hitler listened to his Generals, pulled out and continued his campaign in the spring, Russia would have fallen. They were also greatly aided in the opening of a second and third front by the Americans and Brits in Europe and Africa, forcing the Germans to take offensive forces away from the Eastern battles.
- BabyWookie, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Uh, Russia is huge and Moscow is fairly close to its western borders. By the winter of 1941, they have pretty much moved their industrial war machine to the Urals in Siberia. Even if the Nazis did capture Moscow, it wouldn't have accomplished too much. Napoleon took Moscow and what good did it do him?
- BabyWookie, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Also, by the D-Day invasion in the summer of 1944, the Axis has about as much of a chance of making a "come-back" on the Eastern Front as Ron Paul has at becoming the president.
- mike17032, on 05/12/2008, -5/+1Russia halted their advance, but would have never been able to take back all of Europe on their own.
And you seem to discount Japan far to quickly. We had to nuke those ***** twice to get them to stop fighting, even after it was clear they had lost. - CarzorStelatis, on 05/12/2008, -2/+3Erm... are you aware that the European Allies had been fighting Germany for two years before Russia was invaded?
- daizaru, on 05/12/2008, -2/+4Whether or not the Americans refuse to acknowledge that they weren't the sole reason Germany was defeated. Is it not the same thing to make such a bold assertion about Russia? Germany spread their resources thinly in WWII, had they concentrated their efforts on any one front (due to other countries non participation) things might have been different. Russia invaded Poland after Germany and were first attacked by Germany, not the other way around. To speculate on what would have happened if Russia was the sole agressor is kind of a moot point.
It is important to base history on what did happen and not speculate either way on what could have been. Especially when in your own words you say Russia intended to conquer Europe themselves and was prevented from doing so, which kind of implies a victory for everyone but them.
It's also funny that you credit the Chinese for also suppressing Japan in a concentrated effort with the Americans when you so easily credit Russians as the sole victor against Germany. It seems contradictory.- kingmanic, on 05/12/2008, -2/+2I'm being realistic, America was a very important player in the Pacific theater, while their significance in the European theater was much much less. Had Britain and the common wealth been uninvolved the Germans may have in fact held off the Russians as they would be able to dedicate more resources but the US was a bit player contributing more wealth but fought less then the Canadians. So America remembers it fondly as "we saved Europe's ass" when in fact it only subjectively contributed as much as Canada in WWI or WWII. Russia took a massive toll on Germany, through things such as the Russian winter and their scorched earth policies to the fact that they were throwing a lot of bodies at Germany.
I may not have been clear, but America continues to take more credit for it's own actions then it deserves. The examples are their stance on WWI and WWII. - Managua8Green, on 05/12/2008, -2/+1Yes, massive toll. In Stalingard, 400,000 germans.
and......
1, 247,000 Russians. Not bad. Thats a good Kill/death ratio for the Russians.

- MisterMajusty, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0Are these more analogies? So which country is Kojima?
- Eezyville, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1kingmanic, would you prefer that Americans didn't enter into WW2? And stop making it seem as though Russia would've kicked Germany's ass. The Russians were trying to make friends with Germany in the beginning, when Germany invaded Poland, because the Russian military force could not hold up against Germany's. The Russians were killing off their military leaders to change the military. The Russian military was weak then and if Hitler had listened to his advisers and invaded then Russia would be in some *****, but he didn't and we can never know what would've happened. Stop downplaying America and treating Russia like a savior. America played a big part in the war, Great Britian played a big part in the war, Russia played a big part in the war.

- andydumi, on 05/12/2008, -1/+10Ditto. I am a first generation naturalized immigrant, but I think of myself as an American. And I hold several patents. Does it make my inventions any less American that I was born elsewhere?

and i love kojima's analogy of the car and the flying car that can go to mach speed and space. but then it couldn't go into space but it still can fly and go mach speed and that is amazing! can hardly wait to get my flying, mach speed, metal gear solid 4.- Zamfir, on 05/12/2008, -1/+17Yes, Kotaku is a joke... biased as they come. - daizaru, on 05/12/2008, -1/+10I have to admit I do rely on Kotaku for a lot of news, but I have to ignore their personal commentary because it's awful. I only wish most of their patrons would do the same.
Anyone with half a brain knew the original statement was a misquote. Why they feel the need to defend themselves to such a degree when Kojima went out of his way to give an extremely elaborate conveyance of what he really meant just seems petty and small of them.

When his games are out and he should be hyping them he is extremely modest, always saying "I wish it could be better", "I hope people will enjoy it". He always feels like he has let down his fans.
I for one don't think he has that big of an ego, he's just a perfectionist who's tough to work with. I can see where he gets the association, but metal gear is his "legacy/baby" and can understand why he is so tough to deal with.- Inverno, on 05/12/2008, -3/+3See, the joke is he's bragging about being modest.

- MarkusDee, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0Which is why I think they would have to be computer navigated (maybe with an option of human override for emergencies). In fact, I am looking forward to when land based cars drive themselves. I have much better things I could be doing with that time ... like playing MGS4.
- ZenMojo, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1We already have flying cars that turn into submarines. They were on Digg months ago. Where you been?
EDIT: And, no, I'm not joking.
- CollapseControl, on 05/12/2008, -20/+11I'm just waiting to see if MGS4 can match the sales numbers of other console exclusives (Halo, GOW, SMG, Metroid, etc, etc)
- BlueSkyfish, on 05/12/2008, -1/+9Metroid Prime 3 didn't really sell that well. Which is a shame since it's such an excellent game.
- NiceGuyVan, on 05/12/2008, -4/+6Why would sales matter? Are you one of those assholes who's size of their stiffy only matches that of a bar on a graph? Who actualyl has fun comparing sales?
I like all real gamers don't give a ***** how much a game sells. Just cause an ***** like you didn't buy Beyond Good and Evil doesn't diminish how awesome that game is. And just cause an ***** like you bought a Wii doesn't make it awesome.
And no I don't care if you really don't own a Wii, it's an example.- CollapseControl, on 05/12/2008, -10/+2I don't really care about your little rant there, stop acting like an angry child who just got slapped.
Sales determine how many people are actually buying the game, if you didn't know. And that is always something interesting to know.
Now go back into your crib and finish your bottle. - ericrous, on 05/12/2008, -3/+2Sales only matter if you want anyone to make games like this in the future. If you ever want another PS3 exclusive, you had better damn well hope for good MGS4 sales.
- CollapseControl, on 05/12/2008, -10/+2I don't really care about your little rant there, stop acting like an angry child who just got slapped.
- kingmanic, on 05/12/2008, -4/+13Halo and Gears of War weren't exclusives.
- CollapseControl, on 05/12/2008, -10/+3Can you play Halo or Gears on a Wii or PS3?
Exactly.
Keep those nerdy smart ass remarks to yourself. - kingmanic, on 05/12/2008, -3/+10So being able to play them on a PC makes them exclusive to the 360? You are an idiot.
- CollapseControl, on 05/12/2008, -6/+6No, you're the idiot for not reading the comment properly, it says "Console exclusive" *****.
In what world is the PC considered a gaming console?
Yeah, shut up.- kingmanic, on 05/12/2008, -2/+7Being available in another platform would preclude something from being exclusive. disqualifying a platform because it doesn't come with a joystick is disingenuous and pointless. I did read your comment and noticed the little trick you were trying to play and went out of my way to outline why it was asinine. You are an idiot.
- Destinatus, on 05/12/2008, -2/+7If it plays games it counts, *****. If it plays the same exact games as another system, those games aren't exclusive to one system! Is it really that complicated?
- CollapseControl, on 05/12/2008, -8/+1You guys are hopeless, lol, there is no point in even trying to speak to ***** like you all. Not that i'm really trying to tho, you kids just love bashing on keyboards, it's ok children.
- innovaciones, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5Great! another guy that thinks he will be always right no matter what.
- CollapseControl, on 05/12/2008, -6/+6No, you're the idiot for not reading the comment properly, it says "Console exclusive" *****.
- CollapseControl, on 05/12/2008, -10/+3Can you play Halo or Gears on a Wii or PS3?
- mywhitenoise, on 05/12/2008, -3/+13Look at his profile. Collapse is a complete dumbass.
Almost all of his comments are about Xbox Live being better than PSN. His name is "XBL>PSN", his 'about me' says "Pissing Sony Fannyboys off since 2001".- CollapseControl, on 05/12/2008, -11/+3Are you going to cry about it now?
You spend way too much time on this site (researching others as well) and take it way too serious.- mywhitenoise, on 05/12/2008, -1/+13I do spend a lot of time on here, what the hell else am I going to do while I'm at work?
Talking about taking things too seriously, you've devoted yourself to being an anti-PSN troll, that's far beyond more pathetic than anything I have ever done. Whatever, it puts a smile on my face that you're 25 years old and have never had sex with a woman before.- CollapseControl, on 05/12/2008, -8/+1There you go making dumb assumptions again, good job.
Attacking someone's personal life on a website? yeah, grow up little boy.
A 22 year old with a pokemon picture, lol@you. Get your head out your ass.
I almost feel bad for your pathetic ways. - mywhitenoise, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5Enough. Just go slam your face into your pillow and let it out. Just scream and cry into it, like you do every night before you go to bed because you realize that you're 25 YEARS OLD and still haven't had sex yet.
- CollapseControl, on 05/12/2008, -10/+1Wow, ok, so you take what I said to you and put a spin on it, nice. Then you repeat the same dumb ***** you said before about no sex. If you can't type a decent comment don't bother, because that post was pure stupidity.
Does having a picture of a pokemon on this site and posting stupid comments help your sex life? You're a douche who needs to find a new hobby, because you are horrible at this one. - mywhitenoise, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5I do have a regular sex life, and she posts on digg, and her screenname is that of a pokemon!
- WhereAmI, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5mywhitenoise has Positive Diggs and CollapseControl has negative diggs, so I can only wonder at who is horrible at the hobby of trolling.
Actually negative comments might mean you're a successful troll...so that makes mywhitenoise a normal person and CollapseControl a troll... - CollapseControl, on 05/12/2008, -8/+1lol, that is some pretty funny *****.
Sometimes it seems like you two are the only ones who use Digg.
On second thought, you are definitly the only 2 who takes this way too serious.
But at least you nitwits make me laugh, so it's all good.
- CollapseControl, on 05/12/2008, -8/+1There you go making dumb assumptions again, good job.

- SniperGX1, on 05/12/2008, -1/+6Don't feed the troll.
- shinythingy, on 05/12/2008, -1/+8Sales = Quality of game?
- CollapseControl, on 05/12/2008, -7/+1Nope, it shows the quaility of the franchise. If it sells past the standard hardcore fanbase it'll be impressive.
- NecroSexy, on 05/12/2008, -1/+8Kotaku: interweb journalists par excellence. "Analogies? Who would be interested in that?--we convert it to implication insofar as we don't understand his analogies."
- galvo, on 05/12/2008, -23/+8Wait, the PS3 ISN'T a letdown? This is news to me.
- zetsurin, on 05/12/2008, -2/+10Welcome to 2008 retard. Heck, welcome to 2007.
- galvo, on 05/12/2008, -5/+3You're point being? That the PS3's library, firmware, and online features are still lacking heavily? Oh ok.
- googzman, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1His main point was that you are a retard - which you enforced by failing to notice something so obvious.
*dit-dewww*

- FingersMckenzie, on 05/12/2008, -8/+3I wish this wouldn't be the final MGS... :(
- mywhitenoise, on 05/12/2008, -0/+6I do, let it end gracefully and remake the first two Metal Gears.
- mywhitenoise, on 05/12/2008, -6/+3*MGS4
- rezist, on 05/12/2008, -9/+2I hope he's disappointed with MGO.
- SSCrow, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Game Developers set extremely high goals for themselves at the beginning of every project. And the amount of Time & Effort required to meet those goals are very labor intensive.
Every studio makes cutbacks, its the nature of the business.- sanosuke001, on 05/12/2008, -3/+2In college, I took a directx 3d game design course. We had to write a 3d game from start to finish in 10 weeks. That was our problem. We wanted to make sure the engine was perfect before adding game content. We got the engine mostly how we wanted but never got content in. C in the class, but learned a hell of a lot. I don't regret our decision. It's very difficult to hold back on something you know you can do just to finish something else that isn't as important to you.
Unfortunately, you have to make cutbacks somewhere and it's usually at the end of the line. We finished our engine, but no content. (getting a members' laptop stolen didn't help...) They did the same. Though, I'm still sure MGS4 will be amazing.
And, uh, I totally rambled on. Fuggit, I don't care... it's Digg ffs

- zionKing, on 05/12/2008, -6/+1There is probably some truth in this "lost in translation" defense, but my guess he really does believe the result, no matter how impressive to us, doesn't perfectly match his vision for the game's potential. Now that the game is done, the Sony PR team wants to maximize sales. In this case, honesty could lose some sales for not only the artist but Sony. This situation demonstrates again the tension between making art and selling art. My guess is Sony was like "We need to backpedal here" and the stance about modesty is there to put this version in the best possible light.
- NiGHTSChao, on 05/12/2008, -4/+10Being an American gamer I completely agree with his statements, thats how the market is over here, at E3, thats all devs do (say "omg this is the best and we will win")
- kingmanic, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Are you quoting Peter Molyneux?
- powatom, on 05/12/2008, -11/+12MGS4 is the best, the end.
- ericrous, on 05/12/2008, -13/+3And you know that for sure because you've played it, of course, not because you're a PS3 fanboy bitch who has bought into the hype with the fervor of a religious fanatic who's just been told he's next in line for the cult leader's circle jerk.
- ensiid, on 05/12/2008, -1/+7or you could .... you know... read the article, and stop being such a tool?
- ericrous, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Oh, the ARTICLE told you it was awesome. Well, that doesn't make you a "fanboy bitch buying into a bunch of hype before playing the game" at all.
Don't you have some Kool-Aid to drink?- ensiid, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0He was being sarcastic and quoting a direct quote from the article, moron.
- ericrous, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Oh, the ARTICLE told you it was awesome. Well, that doesn't make you a "fanboy bitch buying into a bunch of hype before playing the game" at all.

- asnaturalasgas, on 05/12/2008, -13/+5Modest?! How many Chinese did the Japenese kill during WII? I think they would disagree as their invaders came running over the border yelling "I am the amazing Metal Gear guy"
- MousouMachine, on 05/12/2008, -1/+2Actually the chinese haven't been too good to the japanese either recently, apparently butthurt from years and years ago is still butthurting
- ericrous, on 05/12/2008, -2/+5We should have given the Chinese that pathetic little island decades ago. A long stay in a Chinese prison will take the Dance Dance Revolution right out of those pricks.
- MousouMachine, on 05/12/2008, -1/+2Actually the chinese haven't been too good to the japanese either recently, apparently butthurt from years and years ago is still butthurting
- pidge, on 05/12/2008, -2/+5From the demonstrations I've seen, I can't wait to buy this game. I don't know how much was lost in translation but there is a lot of truth in what he is saying. The Japanese find the current Mac commercials with Mac and PC guys in the USA rude so the Japanese version is much more respectful.
- ericrous, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3Actually, everyone in the U.S. wants to punch Justin Long in the face too.
- sarchosis, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1What are you talking about? The commercials are like exactly the same!
- L0phtpDK, on 05/12/2008, -7/+2Just throwing this out there...
But WHY is he standing in front of a Microsoft // 360 backdrop? Ironic don't you think?- MisterMajusty, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Kotaku spin. It is their website, there's a lot of pictures of Kojima out there but they just happened to choose the one with the 360 backdrop.
- FFXIfrohike, on 05/12/2008, -12/+7MGS what? Is that the new GTA IV expansion?
- dig1x, on 05/12/2008, -9/+6Seems to me someone at Konami came down on him and force him to "apologize".
- EricAnderton, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5Either that or he was mistranslated/misquoted the first time around.
That said, Konami has had a long history of porting their licenses around - maybe Kojima-San will complete his vision with an Xbox version of MGS4?- kingmanic, on 05/12/2008, -0/+5Maybe maybe not. Only MGS 1 and 2 were ported. Sony may have secured exclusivity with a nice check or some other arrangement (such as heavy promotion and bundling).
- SniperGX1, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1Doubtful. Konami != Sony
- EricAnderton, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5Either that or he was mistranslated/misquoted the first time around.
- wildmXranat, on 05/12/2008, -2/+1He can say whatever the hell he wants. It's his design and he is directly responsible for it's success. I gave him credit for being honest, now Konami looks like a typical corporate bully. Stick to the plan and let the game roll out first, i'm sure we'll enjoy it. S#!t like this doesn't work well for game's reputation and especially that PS3 sales are dependant on it.
- ChristBehemoth, on 05/12/2008, -1/+4***** get diggs.
And so does Hideo Kojima - protogenxl, on 05/12/2008, -1/+15Speaking as a mech fanboy.
WHERE THE HELL IS Z.O.E. 3 !!!!!!!!!!!!!- polygons, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1ditto.
- tumbler360, on 05/12/2008, -1/+2Meh, bury, no more news on this game. We've been talking about it since the launch. What more is there to talk about? Wake me when it's on store shelves.
- Wiinii, on 05/12/2008, -8/+2backpedaling
- zetsurin, on 05/12/2008, -0/+7Trolling.
- Number23, on 05/12/2008, -11/+6"I am Japanese, so I try to be modest."
Ok, I love his games, but that statement is *****. Japanese involvement in WWII was in large measure a product of Japanese racism. Seriously, the Japanese made the Nazis look like amateurs- kingmanic, on 05/12/2008, -0/+7While i agree that Japan did very horrible things and remains very xenophobic, Kojima isn't the living embodiment of WWII japan.
- galvo, on 05/12/2008, -7/+1So is Kojima happy with PS3's online capa... oh wait..
- shloopa, on 05/12/2008, -11/+2PS3 Still Sucks
- TheShom, on 05/12/2008, -6/+1I think Kojima decided to elaborate on his statement due to the fact that Sony prolly sent him a "WTF!?!?" letter after the statement was made.
BTW, i dunno if anyone else realized that Kojima's background is completely 360'd - Bungo, on 05/12/2008, -6/+1Backpedaling, ur doin it rite
- decker12, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4Oh my christ, enough babbling about this video game. Just release it already. Good graphics or not, it's gonna sink or swim based on the gameplay. Remember Crysis? After you were blown away by the graphics, that game turned into a wait-for-the-invisible-suit-to-recharge bore fest.
I grow so tired about reading about MGSIV and all the hype surrounding the creator. As serious as everyone takes this guy every time he opens his mouth, you'd think he was releasing a new Bible or figured out a way to cure cancer.- polygons, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1But Kojima can cure cancer, he's just holding it back till he's ready to release it. Hopefully the cancer cure won't have as many delays as MGS4 did.
- VinnieDaMac, on 05/12/2008, -10/+4If he's disappointed with the graphics on the PS3, he should just develop for the 360.
- AvidPreatorian, on 05/12/2008, -3/+2nah, he wouldn't want to make the graphics worse and try to fit a 50gb game on a 9gb DVD. that's old school, but you're funny man!
- innovaciones, on 05/12/2008, -2/+1[sarcasm] What a great comment! [/sarcasm]
- slaystench, on 05/12/2008, -0/+9Kotaku is *****, way to take what he said out of context.
- polygons, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Most of gawker media is complete *****.
- TommyBoy919, on 05/12/2008, -9/+3MGS = most overrated series ever, even moreso than GTA.
- diggslime, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5Kotaku sucks.
If they were serious, they should hire somebody that knows japanese to avoid this kind of embarrassing situations.
But they are just some wannabe game "journalists". Meh. - liuite, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2this goes to prove that brilliant people can sometime say stupid things
- HumanRecall, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3epic fail ...that was the worst cover up EVER !................i woudl have at leats expected when say ..pigs fly !
- ZenMojo, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Kotaku taking the piss? Imagine that...
- galvo, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Welcome to PS3 fanboy central.
- sarchosis, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3" Westerners do not have a tradition of modesty."
Apparently Kojimasan has never heard of the modesty board. - Bonobo, on 05/12/2008, -1/+2kojima sounds like he doesn't like westerners too much.
- ensiid, on 05/12/2008, -1/+2He could've just said, "It's great, I just wish we had the time and resources to do more." Apparently, the Japanese are so modest that they can't learn to use proper PR technique when speaking with the media.... hmm....
