- Spoonicus, on 12/01/2007, -28/+105This is not suprising at all.. everyone in japan has already bought a wii.
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -13/+62i thought finding a wii wouldn't be difficult, then again i bought mine from the nintendo store after standing on line behind 90 people in may.
But it's still like this?? i would just believe the internets for its rarity until one of our receptionists (she's about 45) asked me : do you know anyone who bought a wii, i can't find one and i've checked every store.
i'm way too drunk and coked up to write anything else, sorrry maybe i'll finish later
all i care about is tekken so ps3 for now owns
***** you all - plbland, on 12/01/2007, -8/+44This comment is fantastic
- Edrick, on 12/01/2007, -1/+25You're an awkward person, DarkSamus.
- skywake, on 12/01/2007, -2/+24very close... in Japan:
1 Wii between every 33 people
1 PS3 between every 88 people
what I am really shocked at is the fact that the DS is still selling relatively well in Japan. They must be getting close to 1 DS for every 6 people which is just insane. How many more people are there that are willing to buy it? - estvir, on 12/01/2007, -1/+19I think buying a DS is just a weekly tradition for them being handed down to each generation. They don't actually know why they're doing it any more. :o
- bCabulon, on 12/01/2007, -5/+23The sega saturn only sold 9.5 million over six years. The PS3 has already sold 6 million in one year.
- smacksaw, on 12/01/2007, -2/+16Yeah...makes sense. You can't really judge it by the US releases. Japan has some cool stuff that we don't, so I think software is driving it there. Since it's all compatible I wish they would just make the games multilingual from the start and release everything. I want Megazone 23. I don't really care if it's in English for the voices, I just want English subtitles as an option. Why not do that with more games?
Anyway, my PS3 and Wii are sitting next to one another, co-existing nicely. I find that any game that is available on both I prefer on Wii, Wii for it's exclusives and PS3 for it's exclusives. Most people are probably like me and that's why Wii is ahead of the pack, but if PS3 had more exclusives coming down the pipeline it would be a better competitor.
Also, there's plenty of mahjong, train driving etc stuff for PS3. Not so much for the 360. - inactive, on 12/01/2007, -2/+16You do. You clicked the link, you posted.
- ibeetle, on 12/01/2007, -0/+13@Randall
He did not say he was from Japan. He said he LIVED in Japan.
My sister-in-law is FROM Spearfish, South Dakota. She LIVES in Osaka, Japan; That does not make her Japanese. - pencilneck, on 12/01/2007, -3/+15I just purchased a PS3, 60G version, and have been very impressed with it. As a photographer, I like being able to put my SD and CF cards right into the PS3 and view the photos on my plasma TV quickly and easily.... that only isn't worth the cost but it is a very nice touch. If you want a PS3, save your pennies up (a freaking lot of pennies) and get one. If you want a Wii, then purchase one. If you want to play Pinball on a 2600, then lets game, I'll hand you your ass in that game.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -7/+19believe it or not! you are going to have to dump your wii before you dump the ps3, and if you really think ps3 is NOT going to last for at least 8 years, there is something serioously wrong witth you. if ps2 was released in 2001 and now it's 2007 and we are about to embark on 2008 and sony haven't killed ps2 yet but released another $60 SKU, then sorry to drive you frustrated, but ps3's rampage has just begun.
I mean use your common sense! if ps2 is still alive, how come you expect sony to dump ps3 in the next two years? and the ps3 is not only a gaming console, but also a blu-ray player and computer, given that you install yellow dog linux on it. it has office and all other necessary apps required to turn it into a full-fledged PC. and there is nothing wrong with owning a machine that can do multiple things.
and amidst all these claims that blah blah wah wah ps3 is hard to develop for and what-not, look at the REAL game/software developers who actually respect their job and customers and not the money they can earn temporarily. Look at IW, bethesda, codemasters, epic etc. these are game development companies that would last for decades. and they don't have problems. they don't have problems with embracing new technology.
forget about EA. until and unless they learn the new platform, they are not going to do good at ps3. anybody who has gone through specifications and some more in-depth information on both consoles (xbox360 and ps3) would admit that xbox360 isn't ps3, and ps3 isn't 360 - nbnz, on 12/01/2007, -3/+14I'm in Tokyo right now and can assure you there are plenty of Wiis on shelves. The Wii Fit didn't seem to be flying off shelves either.
- Krystof82, on 12/01/2007, -4/+15I own all 3 next gen consoles, I fail to understand a fanboys logic where they make up excuses saying 'thats because everyone already has a wii' or 'because there are no wiis in japan'. The PS3 had a good marketing strategy for November, congrats to them! I'd rather 3 consoles exist then just 1, more games and more choices. Besides, I beat Mario Galaxy which means it will be gathering dust for another 5 months.
- MagicCake, on 12/01/2007, -1/+12Actually, I like that as well. The PS3 has a very cool slideshow feature where it shows the date, then the photos dropping onto a surface as it scrolls by. They look like real photographs falling onto a table or something. It even tosses out some small negatives of your pictures just to look interesting. It's the kind of thing you want to show people just because it looks cool.
- jacksons98, on 12/01/2007, -0/+10I have several friends with the original PS2, you know the brick. And they are still working fine. My PS3 is the first time I've owned a Playstation and I've had it since launch with absolutely zero problems so far.
- WernerCD, on 12/01/2007, -2/+12"I'm pretty sure..." sounds like a reliable source to me. And I know all about sources.
- staticneuron, on 12/01/2007, -0/+9completely blown out of proportion. Out of all of my freinds who own a PS2 (and that is like all of them) only one had the disc read errors. I had the brick PS2 and decided to move to a slim one but the brick still works to this day. On the other hand half of them have had rrod, a few more have had disc errors and more than half of my live freinds list also got rrods. I think the PS2 issue is way overblown while the 360 one is downplayed.
- HappyScrappy, on 12/01/2007, -4/+13Why? That would reward a supplier for making fewer.
No, it's really about how many are bought. Wii is in ample supply right now in Japan.
This article was written in September, and Wiis are still available on shelves readily in Japan at the moment.
http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/09/in-tokyo-wii-s ... - MakiNavaja, on 12/01/2007, -7/+16I live in Japan and can tell you that it's still much, much harder to get a Wii than a PS3. The hardcore types will go for the PS3 (duh), but kids and families are all getting Wii for Christmas, if they don't already have it. And if they do already have it, then they're getting DS games and/or Super Mario Galaxy.
- staticneuron, on 12/01/2007, -0/+8Population of Japan: 127.5 million
Wii's sold in Japan: 3.87 million
PS3's sold in Japan: 1.45 million
DS's sold in Japan: 20.30 million
Very amazing numbers but one has to wonder "how many gamers are there in Japan?" - narcosis219, on 12/01/2007, -1/+9The 360 called.
- HappyScrappy, on 12/01/2007, -11/+18Not in Japan. In Japan right now, Wiis sit on the shelves. Not like Wii is a failure or anything there, but there is enough supply that they could sell more at this time.
- thatsmyaibo, on 12/01/2007, -10/+16You're just as much as a fanboy for coming here to troll on this thread.
- sgtpppr, on 12/01/2007, -2/+8Do what??
- HappyScrappy, on 12/01/2007, -7/+13This is good news and quite surprising.
Things should get even better as even more games become available. - EdiciusMaximus, on 12/01/2007, -5/+11Hats off to Sony for finally getting their act moving in the right direction. I find it funny how people love to hate the PS3. It's human nature to be scared of something and hate it if you don't have it and can't understand it. Play "Uncharted" for an hour and then go play another game on any other console and you'll understand why the PS3 is going to sell more and more. It's not only built for the long haul, but if games are done well and use the SPUs (instead of bad PC/360 ports to the main core), the system can really outdo anything on the market. Oh, and I watch BlueRay movies on it all the time..........no other system really does what it can do and Sony needs to really market that and keep quality games coming to keep this momentum.
- WiseWeasel, on 12/01/2007, -4/+9They make dandy doorstops, coasters, paperweights. Plus, you gotta collect all the colors, right?
- MagicCake, on 12/01/2007, -1/+6You should get ***** up more often, because that's one of the better things I've seen you say, dude.
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -13/+18There are more PSP owners in japan than Wii owners, so there are definetly more ppl in japan that don't own/want a Wii
- WiseWeasel, on 12/01/2007, -3/+8I wouldn't discount the PS3 so soon. GTA4 is coming soon, and the 360 has been plagued with reliability issues. I don't currently own either console, and I know for sure I need my GTA fix, but with all the problems people are having with the 360, and the price of the PS3 now at a reasonable level, my mind is pretty much made up for the latter. I suspect that like with the PS2, the next major GTA release will move a lot of consoles, and with all the bad press and complaints surrounding the 360, the PS3 might just be back in the game for real fairly shortly. I say this despite my personal hatred for Sony and their customer-hostile policies.
- mrgulabull, on 12/01/2007, -3/+8While this would have meant something at launch, this logic is just silly at this point. This equation will reveal more about the systems current demand.
units sold this month / number of people that do not own the system = current demand - NozE8, on 12/01/2007, -2/+7You are using a 3 month old source? Thats freakin business quarter. The article itself claims it doubts the supply will last long.... 3 months ago!
Also MakiNavaja posts first hand info from Japan below. - smacksaw, on 12/01/2007, -4/+9A line of 90 people? I would have shroomed. You'd have seen all of the Nintendo characters.
- guruboyguru, on 12/01/2007, -1/+6I've only read this exact comment about 70 times...wow we get it. It's not original and it was only funny the first couple times.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/01/2007, -3/+7Why the hell is he being dugg down? He's absolutely right, try playing an imported game on your US Wii.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4I guess I was lucky, because my PS2 (bought at launch) still works, I gave it to my brother-in-law. And my original PS1 (the very first model with all the inputs, and serial ports) surprisingly still works.
- HappyScrappy, on 12/01/2007, -5/+9There are plenty of Wiis on shelves in Japan, there's no supply constraint there at the moment.
- betterth, on 12/01/2007, -5/+9And more DS owners than PSP. What's your point?
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -1/+5God damn, what kind of fanboy do you have to be to believe that the PS3 outselling anything for a single month is impossible? *****, even a broken clock is right twice a day.
- pencilneck, on 12/01/2007, -1/+5Seeing as how you must be a "real" photographer because you have a thing for film... please tell me a quick and easy way to get my 4X5 negs (thousands of them) up on the TV? None of my clients have every been upset about me using my digital cameras.... they seem to like getting DVDs with all the photos on them the same day.
I should also make a minor correction in my post... "that ALONE isn't worth the cost, but is a very nice touch". I screwed up and typed "only" instead of "alone"... yeah, $600 to view photos on a TV would be stupid.
As for whoring it... it makes not one ***** to me everyone goes out and purchases a PS3 or not. I purchased one for myself because I wanted it. - pencilneck, on 12/01/2007, -1/+5As I recall wasn't that how the PS2 was doing as well. And doesn't the same hold for the Xbox units? Not for nothing but it seems like it worked out nicely for both companies. Well, I'm not sure about the old Xbox, but the 360 seems to be doing fine and we all know how well the PS2 did.
- mike648, on 12/01/2007, -2/+5The latest census shows that 127,433,494 people live in Japan. Wii sales are no where near this number.
- SaxxonPike, on 12/01/2007, -0/+3And that's really the extent of it.
- bejayel, on 12/01/2007, -1/+4Does it matter? You gotta be one hell of a fanboy to believe that sony is producing playstations (with not so readily made parts) FASTER than nintendo can produce Wiis with readily available parts and vendors just waiting ship out. ALSO:

And look at the other comments on here. Or listen to 1up Yours. Wiis are in stock in Japan right now. - mywhitenoise, on 12/01/2007, -1/+4Yeah, that logic makes sense...and there's at least 72 idiots that agree with you. How come the DS is still number 1 then? I mean you'd think everyone in Japan would already have one, right?
- MagicCake, on 12/01/2007, -0/+3In the US, you can't always go buy a PS3. Not because they're not in stock (they are) but because the pricks at GameStop often refuse to sell you one.
I have to buy my games at Target now because I hate those guys so much. But I guess that's OK, because Target has these ***** delicious mashed potato things in the deli... - inactive, on 12/01/2007, -0/+3Are you serious? So people aren't jumping at the opportunity to stand on a piece of plastic in front of the TV and lean back and forth? Wow. That's shocking. http://sarcasticgamer.com/wp/index.php/2007/07/twi ...
- whiteyMcBrown, on 12/01/2007, -1/+4That's pretty cool, but it makes sense. With the PS3 finally getting some good games, this is like its launch. Apple's OS X also outsold Vista in November, but I don't know if anyone is expecting Leopard to outsell Vista.
