- joaob, on 12/08/2007, -5/+33wow, you and your copy of guitar hero 3 are one step away from changing the world.
- nicko68, on 12/08/2007, -3/+21Keep in mind that when people wrote in to Red Octane, noting that their controller doesn't work with Rock Band, they were told that Red Octane was "Working on it".
For those that don't know, Red Octane makes the guitar for the GH series, and was bought by Activision, who just publishes the game.
Nobody likes a monopolist. - cheddar, on 12/08/2007, -1/+13While just a rumor, hopefully, at the very least it'll get someone (Harmonix, EA, RedOctane, Sony, Activision, anybody) to come forward with an explanation. Won't someone think of the customers for once?
- q445187, on 12/08/2007, -5/+17Activision is seriously pissing me off, I wish there was a way to get my money back for at LEAST GH3
- TheFoo, on 12/08/2007, -6/+16Harmonix practically confirmed this rumor over of the Rock Band forums. http://community.rockband.com/vbforum/showthread.p ...
- CannedMango, on 12/08/2007, -3/+11Someone should tell Activision that if the guitars aren't cross-compatible it hurts the sales of *both* games, since people would probably buy GH3 to get a second guitar.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 12/08/2007, -5/+12Activision also hasn't release anything denying that they caused 9/11. Is that enough to prove to you that they did that too?
- HappyScrappy, on 12/08/2007, -2/+9Actually the online play works great on Rock Band. And for free (as a person who had to buy a new 1 year subscription to Live today for $43).
Any particular reason you feel like ***** on a console you don't even own? - Typhoon2009, on 12/08/2007, -1/+7Rock Band's guitar doesn't work because of Activision's insane restrictions on what controllers can be used with their game.
- thejokell, on 12/08/2007, -1/+6Yes, because you see it incorrectly. Harmonix has created support for the Activision-created controller, but Activision is apparently blocking that support right now. Harmonix did the work but Activision doesn't want it to be released (even though the guitars are supported on the 360).
If true that is seriously crappy on Activision's part. - doshindude, on 12/08/2007, -0/+5Man....if this keeps up, the Guitar Hero-esque format of music games will be a lot more expensive due to lack of cooperation between companies. I wish everyone would just freakin' get along and make every guitar compatible with every RO/HMX game.
- Microdot, on 12/08/2007, -1/+6i think he just did.
i hear they are also responsible for the downfall of captain kangaroo... and aids. - Typhoon2009, on 12/08/2007, -3/+6This is one of the few times I actually support EA for something. I don't like the Rock Band controller (it's good-looking but flimsy IMO compared to the GH3 Les Paul), and I am quite annoyed at Activision being completely dickheaded about just letting their guitar work on Rock Band.
- macromorgan, on 12/08/2007, -11/+14Serious dick move on behalf of Blizzactivision.
Anyone wanna buy a used copy of Guitar Hero PS3? Keeps them from profiting on another sale. - Derfy, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3I honestly see some problems arising with this split. I think, the smart way to go from here, is to somehow, please, for Activision and EA and co to team up and get along, and to release Guitar Hero 5 - a well known brand - with Rock Band technology rolled into it. That would pick up Guitar Hero with the latest craze in RO/HMX games, and they would get more direct sales due to the single product for consumers to buy.
Honestly, a rebuttal against my own plan, the whole reason I'm not getting Rock Band is the ridiculous price - $170+ for a game is too much more then what I'm willing to pay. So, if they were to do this, it'd be nice if they were to release two packs - a "Solo" pack, that comes with just the Guitar, and a "Band" pack, which comes with the Guitar and Drum Set. - carpespasm, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3not nessisarily, but in practice they allow developers to be lazy and release an unfinished product to get into the market earlier, telling themselves and their customers that any problems will go away because they'll patch them later.
Using a patch to improve an already good game is one thing, and when that's what they're used for it's very cool. When they're used to fix ***** that should have never made it through good beta testing it's lazy and stains people's memory of a game. - inactive, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3Activision is still probably a bit pissed that Harmonix joined EA.
- Psygnosis, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3Also interesting is that in the latest 1up podcast they mention that Activision might be trying to break/prevent the GHIII guitar from working in Rock Band on the 360.
- nicko68, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2RB's guitar won't work with GH (i.e. Activision's game) because GH is programmed to not work with any other guitars. There is also text on one of the screens prohibiting the use of any non-Activision guitar peripherals with GH.
- carpespasm, on 12/08/2007, -1/+3you play with it turned so far down that the console's fan hum makes it less audible?
- TheFoo, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2On one page HMXSean stated that they submitted a fully tested patch to Sony a week ago and later points out that this thread was one of the only speculation threads that wasn't closed immediately.
- HappyScrappy, on 12/08/2007, -1/+3Rock Band is only distributed by EA. It is published by MTV games and written by Harmonix.
I like the Rock Band guitar a lot better than the GH3 one, I can't wait until I can get a 2nd one. - aic007, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1"Also interesting is that in the latest 1up podcast they mention that Activision might be trying to break/prevent the GHIII guitar from working in Rock Band on the 360."
That would really blow cause I don't plan on buying the RB guitar cause the GH3 one is so much better. If they do, ISay goodbye to GH3 since the update should only take place if the game is played. - withears, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2Destructoid!
- wabbiteh, on 12/08/2007, -2/+3I've skimmed through most of the thread, and don't see anyone making any sort of message confirming it to be true. Is there a specific post I should be looking for?
- tcklord, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1The guitar, GH3 or Rockbands is far more noisy when playing on Hard or higher then any consoles fan noise, what a lame comment by HappyScrappy.
- xeroclass, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1old
- HappyScrappy, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2You're not paying attention. It is the SOFTWARE maker who has to write the driver to support the controllers. It's crappy on Activision's part that Rock Band guitars don't work on GH3, because Activision decided not to write the code to make RB guitars work on their software.
- Dakart, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2They can't prevent their competitor from improving their product, but Activision shouldn't be expected to HELP Harmonix improve their product.
- cheddar, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1That would pretty much confirm the patch delay rumor.
- HappyScrappy, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2Wasn't an option for me. MS won't let you move save games between Xbox accounts, so it would be problematic for me to use my save game (i.e. song unlocks) on both my home PS3 and the work one I play rhythm games with coworkers on.
Besides, it's nice when playing music games that the PS3 is far quieter so I can hear the music better.
Oh yeah, and wireless guitars. w00t. - inactive, on 12/08/2007, -5/+6Yeah..you sound like an unbiased, intelligent person. Then again, you are an Apple fanboy, so why would anyone expect intelligence from you?
- doshindude, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2they're too busy fighting each other to give a **** about the customers (let's not forget microsoft and their non-wireless guitar policy)
- HappyScrappy, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2They don't have to help do anything. Harmonix has a patch for RB to make the GH3 guitars work. The assertion here is Activision is STOPPING Harmonix from shipping it.
- Dylson, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2Yes.
- cheddar, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Guitar Hero 3's guitar works fine on Rock Band for the Xbox360. This is because of Microsoft's strict controller guidelines from what I hear. If it works there, why not the PS3? That to me is not good business. I've seen many people say how the GH3 guitar is superior to RBs. People would actually go buy GH3 just for the second guitar. Am I hating on Activision? If the rumor is true, then yes I am. However, when it comes down to it, all parties share some blame.
I do have to digg you down for the jab at the end about a full time job and finishing school. Completely unnecessary as I have a full time job and have finished college years ago. - inactive, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Harmonix used open standards, Activision did not. Yet Harmonix are patching their software anyway to support the non standard GH controllers. Before this rumour this was assumed to be incompetence, not malicious.
- nicko68, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1I don't understand why Sony doesn't have the same guidelines as Microsoft does in this case. This is making the XBox look better than the PS3. I hope Nintendo has this policy if/when RB ever makes it to the Wii.
Funny how Microsoft is endorsing open standards in this case, eh? :) - weeman43302, on 12/08/2007, -2/+2view Typhoon's comment below
- Bakkster, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1Yes, because competition is bad...
Do you seriously think that? - macromorgan, on 12/08/2007, -3/+3Xbox Live rules huh?
I personally would rather have Sony hosted game servers for free (Warhawk among other games) that pay Microsoft $50 a year for the priviledge of hosting my own server.
Of course, the only game I've played in months on my Xbox doesn't even have online (even if it did I wouldn't care... Mass Effect). - ShugNinx21, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1Harmonix knew the tech specs of the guitar hero controllers, Activision did not have the specs to the RB controller. I also didn't see Harmonix send over the specs so that Neversoft could write the code to make them work.
So the only reason Harmonix were able to even make the GH controllers work for 360 RB was because they had information that Activision and Neversoft didn't have.
Hell if you want to run with rumor conspiracy theories, Since Harmonix knew how the GH controllers worked they could have purposely designed their game controllers so they wouldn't work with GH but both brands of guitars work on their game. - lolo2007, on 01/22/2008, -0/+0Also interesting is that in the latest 1up podcast they mention that Activision might be trying to break/prevent the GHIII guitar from working in Rock Band on the 360. http://game.paramegsoft.com/
http://download.paramegsoft.com/ - inactive, on 12/08/2007, -2/+2"a trusted source" eh?
- Meatball01, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1cause patches are evil right?
- TrancePhreak, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1Lost Vikings was on the PC also, and it was rockin.
- DGRP, on 12/08/2007, -7/+6Solution: Should of gotten the 360 version.
Less crap to deal with. - HappyScrappy, on 12/08/2007, -4/+3Hmm? So if Activision refuses to work the the RB guitar they should also be able to block RB from working with the GH3 guitar?
I do not agree. And doing business shouldn't involve keeping your competitor from improving their product. Capitalism is about competition improving the experience for the customer, and blocking others from improving their stuff doesn't do that. - Kido1986, on 12/08/2007, -4/+3Please leave the Blizzard part of the name out of this :(
I knew Blizzard's name would be tarnished as soon as this merger happened.
Blizzard is not responsible for this. All Blizzard is responsible for is Diablo series, Starcraft, Warcraft series, and (unfortunately) WoW.
Unless you count their old SNES stuff like Lost Vikings :) -
