- gonzoloDK, on 02/01/2009, -1/+60nah, I'm gonna keep mah super console the way it is... a ps3 and a xbox 360 duct taped together to make a single entity.
- TotalHalibut, on 02/01/2009, -3/+51Because we bought a $500 console and a $2000 HDTV in order to play Super Mario World.
- Archer007, on 02/01/2009, -2/+39Make sure you match up the vents - they can cool each other more effectively that way.
- dsundquist, on 02/01/2009, -0/+29Wait wait, why is this guy installing ubuntu on a PS3. There is a special distro that is customized for the playstation 3.

"And why were you not using the new Yellow Dog 6.1 distro for PS3? It's fully supported and fully utilizes the Cell processor. Here's where to get it and how to install/use it! Way better than Ubuntu IMHO."
I don't know myself. I'm far too lazy to do it on my PS3. Relevant? - inactive, on 02/01/2009, -3/+24Ubuntu is sooo slow on the ps3. It's a waste of space and time until someone figures out how to utilize the ps3 GPU.
- PWNyExpress, on 02/01/2009, -3/+22That TV setup is absolutely atrocious.
- BrianD2, on 02/01/2009, -4/+21RRoD. Happened to me 3 times. Finally got a ps3.
- DarkStalker, on 02/01/2009, -1/+17Personally, I like my setup a LOT better. Wireless Sixaxis also doubling as a mouse, games being streamed from my Linux box, full video previews (not in these vids though), arcade ambience mp3s playing, wahcade running as my frontend for it all. My goal was to make it as easy as the Xbox was back in the day. I'm using one of the SPE's on the PS3 to do the scaling to fullscreen which allows me to keep the CPU concentrated on emulating... lets me run more borderline games well. SNES fullspeed, full screen. Video quality isn't that great, but you get the idea. ;)

I just boot to Linux and bam, fluxbox comes up and starts wahcade. Gaming heaven. :D - inactive, on 02/01/2009, -0/+15I hope that Wii is duct-taped to that subwoofer. Stuff has a nasty habit of falling off of subwoofers.
Also, FTA: "Plus, Ubuntu can only see and use 221.7 MB of the PS3's 512MB of RAM for some reason."
That's because 256MB is video-only memory. - Shazbuckle, on 02/01/2009, -1/+14I have mouse and keyboard for my ps3 and I don't even use Ubuntu 0_o
- phosphor112, on 02/01/2009, -0/+13Burried this article for not mentioning YDL 6.1 FOR PS3 what so ever. It runs better, made specifically for PS3 and gets no credit at all for it.
Also YDL is able to use 512mb of ram while Ubuntu can only use 256mb. - aaronandwine, on 02/01/2009, -1/+13every HD ready "legally downloaded motion picture" i have found has been in MKV so I'm thinking that its why.
- kolop1, on 01/31/2009, -5/+15I guess it's neat.
- MrHappyMan, on 02/01/2009, -2/+12Now what I really want is an MKV compatible PS3 so I can play all my...*Looks around shiftily* legally downloaded motion picture material directly.
Except..I don't have a PS3 or a HDTV o_O - efaustus9, on 02/01/2009, -0/+10For the ps3 I prefer Yellow Dog linux over ubuntu. As you can see in these videos Yellow dog Linux on the ps3 is quite capable.

5 things you can do on yellow dog linux for the ps3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rvf6y2BQ1io - Ultrace, on 02/01/2009, -3/+12Admittedly, Super Mario World is better, gameplay-wise than most of what you'd find on the PS3.
- smacksaw, on 02/01/2009, -1/+10You can't harm your PS3 by doing this. As long as you backup and restore the files you want to keep, it's fine. Linux runs in a totally separate partition that is completely independent of the PS3. When you're in Linux you can't even see the PS3 drive and your PS3 has no clue that a Linux partition even exists. They are totally and completely segregated. You can totally brick your Linux setup and it will have no bearing on your PS3 because they are totally isolated from one another. There is no overlap. Nothing can go wrong.
- deusmacabre, on 02/01/2009, -1/+10I hacked my original xbox, upgraded the hd to 80gb - now I have a Snes Emulator, a Megadrive/Genesis emulator, MAMEoX, a Nes Emulator, an N64 emulator and a C64 emulator installed on it, along with a hell of a lot of games.
Its a seriously easy option if youre on a tight budget, as I am.
Saying that, if I had the money, a PS3 and a 50-inch HDTV would be high on my list of purchases, and this guide seems like a reasonably straightforward method for retro joy. - dandonia, on 02/01/2009, -0/+9Modding is not the same as installing something by following the instructions in the PS3 box.
The only thing more "useful" about the 360 is that it doubles as a heater for the house which btw, is not me knocking the 360 - I use it often to warm my room up, even when I am playing my PS3. - inactive, on 02/01/2009, -0/+9Oh christ... wireless-controlling was an utter nightmare back in the day. They were usually infrared, requiring you to point the controller at the video game system the whole goddamn time, and God help you if you accidentally moved your hands just the tiniest bit off center in the middle of a boss battle.
- MrHappyMan, on 02/01/2009, -1/+9^ Thats exactly why.
- jermm, on 02/01/2009, -7/+15PS3 is a george foreman grill, not an ionic breeze
- efaustus9, on 02/01/2009, -0/+7You dont have to mod the console to run linux on it. unlike xbox linux on the ps3 is a feature in the xmb called otheros. Using this feature you can install a full fledged operating system on your ps3. Also you dont lose the gameos when doing so. I will also mention that the ps3 has a good gba emulator.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VO5Oukbq1Qk - MrZop, on 02/01/2009, -1/+8the list is stupid.
folding@home and Home itself he posts as if they're some downside to the PS3. sort of an ignorant statement. considering they're good, and two things the xbox can't boast.
The dust free thing is just a stupid line. doesn't really mean anything or have any facts to it.
The "buy your dvd collection again" claim is stupid. blu-ray isnt about the past, it's about the future, and movies and games you buy in the future. not replacing your collection. again, another stupid illogical insult.
ahh, the typical xbox fanboys good ol' standby. the "no games" whine. That was only half true back in 07. and it's not true in any way now. xbox has more games, yes. but between all the bratz and Burger King games, it's mostly filler. PS3 has a ton of solid games, with many solid games on the way. stupid out-dated claim. and sadly, it's still the typical ignorant xbox fanboy insult.
and the trophy thing is a stupid attempt at an insult. obviously the gamerscore is pretty much the same thing. but sony is planning to use your trophys and levels in home so you can display your trophy's in your space, as well as get bonus stuff depending on your level. more then that gamerscore can boast, no?
like i said in my first post. Glass houses. - GregFD3S, on 02/01/2009, -4/+11I installed Ubuntu on my PS3 over a year ago. It works great, I only wish it was more compatible. I ended up just using my mini-mac most of the time (it's hooked up to my plasma).
- Jyuu, on 02/01/2009, -1/+7Not really.
He's talking about the GPU. Access to the RSX is still limited. - Moonkeeper, on 02/01/2009, -2/+8If you're going to mod a system for emulation, the original xbox is better. It emulates the old systems better and has decent n64, psx and gba emulators as well.
- 1to1, on 02/01/2009, -2/+8Nice
- dandonia, on 02/01/2009, -2/+8It's happened to my friend a few times too but he just keeps on paying to get it fixed. I asked him how many times he is going to let microsoft screw him and when he will pick up a PS3 - he said something like "I would sooner buy a wii then kill myself with it" And he hates the wii.
I find it most odd as he hates Windows and Microsoft in general but he loves the xbox division and he hates sony to the point where he would keep paying to get his 360 fixed rather than buy a machine that works. He plays COD mainly so it's not like he would be giving up anything.
The other thing thats strange about him - he love his MBP because of the nice extras - he marked out when he tried his slot loading for the first time. - LoneWolf01, on 02/01/2009, -1/+7My bad. I'm from Australia, where we've pretty much used half our download limit if we download an HD ready "legally downloaded motion picture".
- colsim, on 02/01/2009, -1/+6I have a camera-phone just like that
- RevJonathan, on 02/01/2009, -0/+5Yeah, but we get wireless controllers this way!
- phosphor112, on 02/01/2009, -1/+6You can't AA a 2D game...
- Nasterisk, on 02/01/2009, -1/+6I'm of the impression that being able to do more with my $500 console and $2000 HDTV is never a bad thing.
- phosphor112, on 02/01/2009, -0/+5MKV isn't a type of encoding. It's a container. Two different things. But anyway. Almost ALL bluray files come in MKV. Open source is always nice.
- cerealjynx, on 02/01/2009, -1/+6It's a lot easier to do on a PSP, and you get the bonus of portability.
- Mackofalltrades, on 02/01/2009, -0/+5You sorta can. Well I dont know if Snes9x supports filters and crap but ZSNES has all these random filters enhancing and mixing up the graphics.
- dandonia, on 02/01/2009, -0/+5Because not everyone has or wants a PC hooked up to their living room TV. Cables to hide, finding space for the PC, the noise, etc. Especially the older generation who's kids would probably benefit from this.
What I want to know is - why the guys behind yellow dog or ubuntu (whoever has the power to make this decision) hasn't approached sony and have them install yellow dog out of the box. It would add functionality to the PS3 right out the box and it would get more people using linux. Very few people out there even know about this functionality - most that do either can't be bothered to install it or don't know how and most are too lazy to find out. Sony could dedicate 10GB to the partition - it would really help with the parents because then they are buying their kids something that can play games and do homework on. - JonForTheWin, on 02/01/2009, -0/+5"you won't be able to use any Linux software that's compiled for x86, which is, unfortunately, most of it."
No . . that's only proprietary *****. While some is very desired, like Flash, it's a very very small handful of packages. Marked as inaccurate. - dandonia, on 02/02/2009, -1/+5It's not that I hate the 360 cos to be honest I would love it, if I didn't have to pay to play online. But if I can play all the features of Rainbow 6, COD, FIFA, Smackdown, GRAW, etc on one system without paying a fee - why should I pay a fee on the other system?
- dandonia, on 02/01/2009, -1/+5Maybe you missed the part where Sony halfed the price of the dev kit and released more support/tools to be used by their devs. Where on earth can you get a dev kit for the 360 for free? I think you mixed that ***** up. Hell if they were just giving away the dev kits for the 360 - why would anyone buy a console?
As for your suggestion of new ideas and concepts - have you seen Little Big Planet, Home, 3D capabilities expected to be added later in the year, etc. Also there is nothing stopping me from making a game that you can play on your PSN - through your browser. I can play N (you know the game before N+) on my PS3 for free - while Microsoft sell you Pong and Pac Man - I can play them for free --etc. - MrZop, on 02/01/2009, -2/+6@dandonia. yeah, that's pretty much the description of the typical ignorantly blind Xbox fanboys. They ignorantly hail their xbox's all the while bashing the other systems using stupid, outdated, and illogical insults.
I love my PS3. but don't get me wrong, i don't hate the 360, in fact, i was going to buy one, but LittleBigPlanet,Gran Turismo,MGS, and Final Fantasy +bluray made me decide to get a PS3. i still want an xbox, but can't afford one at the moment. might buy a used one though. - 3leggedHorse, on 02/01/2009, -0/+4MKV2VOB does the job.
- dsundquist, on 02/01/2009, -2/+6Arr you hate to much on the ps3
- jeffmon, on 02/01/2009, -0/+4MKV2VOB..look it up.
- solid12345, on 02/01/2009, -0/+4God MKV is a pain in the ass, what the ***** purpose is it, It's not like you can't have subtitles and dual audio in a regular .avi
