"So Konami doesn't want reviewers can't mention the 90 minute cutscenes"
wtf? - Projektorboy, on 06/02/2008, -7/+149Doing this for publicity? Questioning their integrity? I don't know what magazine you guys have been reading but EGM has had a track record of genuine integrity and not caving to publishers and advertisers for a long time. Back in the day of Dave Mira BMX XXX when EGM trashed the game, Acclaim pulled advertising and refused to let EGM review more games. EGM didn't care and stood by it. Similar deal with Ubisoft and the Kane & Lynch debacle.
If you want to see a magazine that lacks integrity, and sucks the ***** of its advertisers, look no further than an issue of GamePro in the past couple years where the Family Guy game was presented as a COVER feature and was met with nothing but hype where all of us gamers knew it'd end up as cash-in-crap. - tEhKewleSt, on 06/02/2008, -3/+131Gamespot acted really offended when asked by Konami to leave the bad bits out as well, but they were just holding out for a brief case full of money.
- terminal157, on 06/02/2008, -9/+124Are you basing that on something or is it unwarranted cynicism? EGM has a history of standing up for it's integrity like this and is one of the more trustworthy game journalists out there, as far as I know. Something I'm missing?
- KingGoonie, on 06/02/2008, -52/+156As much as EGM sucks, and their podcast is horrendous... you gotta admit in this particular case they are right. If its part of the game, they should be able to mention it. Of course EGM may just be using this for press and to say "look how great we are" so they may be doing the right thing for the wrong reasons. Actually I pretty much guarantee they are doing it for the wrong reasons, but just are telling everyone they are doing it for the right ones.
But seriously. I listed to their podcast once becuase IGN's werent out when I left for work that morning, and it was just so so so so so so corny, they thought they were funny and they werent.. IGN podcasts are way better. - gd1z, on 06/02/2008, -5/+57Nope, you are right. EGM is known for their integrity. For example, they started giving previews of games a fair review, instead of just rehashing press releases. I trust them over many other sources.
- jasnmb, on 06/02/2008, -7/+58"Have at you, Snake!"
- ToddSchishler, on 06/02/2008, -12/+50Woah. Woah. Woah.
Let me get this straight. Konami actually made stipulations, if reviewers wanted to review the game Early?!
*GASP* - Branchex, on 06/02/2008, -4/+39Who is a reliable source for game reviews, we know it's not Gamespot.
- silverbulletky, on 06/02/2008, -6/+40Their podcasts are awesome.. not as good as GFW's podcast though
- SuperSneaks, on 06/02/2008, -15/+49You know. I really don't give a ***** about the 90 minute cut scenes , 4.5 GB or whatever install, not being true 720/1080p, and anything else people say about this games b/c I enjoy the Metal Gear Series and look forward to closing it out. I think this game will be Game of the Year.
- jerematic, on 06/02/2008, -4/+36I love how everyone here is bowing down to the will of the industry selling the product, rather then the integrity of the people trying to review it. I'm not going to debate the merits of EGM vs other media outlets, because it frankly doesn't matter. People are too focused on opinion, and ignoring the facts of this situation.
The fact is, a company selling a product is downright refusing a fair and balanced review of said product, simply because they're worried about negative press. This is something that cannot and should not be tolerated in any industry, with any media outlet. The video game industry is in a unique position right now, as it's still a relatively niche market. True, there are more gamers today then ever before. True, it is a multi-billion dollar industry. But people who don't play video games don't pay any attention to them, and thus have very little exposure to them. Compare that to the movie industry, where if someone doesn't like watching movies, they're still exposed to them in several ways.
If this were to happen with a movie, and for example, Lucasarts refused to allow reviewers access to the new Indiana Jones if they mentioned anything about the ridiculous underlying plot and ending, people would be up in arms and ready to boycott the movie for even the idea that someone couldn't mention the negative aspects of it. - hypermog, on 06/02/2008, -32/+63Too bad for subby the 90 minute cutscene RUMOR is false.
http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=187049 - KingPsyz, on 06/02/2008, -3/+34they pushed that game harder than the time I pushed *inster pop culture refrence here* around *insert other pop culture refrence here*
- SkippyDoorknob, on 06/02/2008, -2/+30The EGM podcast varies wildly from one episode to the next depending on who is in it and what the topics are.
- 4d669, on 06/03/2008, -8/+30I love how everyone whines about 90 minute epic cut-scenes that are only there to answer every question and to make everyone shut the ***** up about the story (since MGS2 was too complicated for them) and they don't complain about having to level up characters on crappy RPGs with stupid storylines for twice as long by walking around on faggy forests and having monsters show up every two steps.
- braditude101, on 06/03/2008, -5/+26Am I the only Metal Gear fan boy that would not mind a 90 minute cut scene? That's about how long it should take to explain why the hell Liquid survived through an arm right?
- LennyMFerguson, on 06/03/2008, -2/+23Try 1up Yours instead of all of the above. It makes the EGM and IGN podcasts look like... well, like web podcasts (synonymous with *****).
- baronsmeg, on 06/02/2008, -1/+21Then EGM went and reviewed the game anyway, with out a rating. The review was done in a round table format, and was probably more helpful than any thing a number could do.

- DixonPro, on 06/03/2008, -3/+22Dugg for faggy forests.
- dekuscrub, on 06/02/2008, -2/+20This has been happening for years. I am wondering why it took a game like MGS4 to get people all riled up about it.
- AtheismFTW, on 06/03/2008, -1/+19After reading the above few comments, I no longer consider myself a nerd.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/02/2008, -7/+24Why? You think Konami's stupid list of limitation for reviews is going to have ANY effect on how the game plays?
If they're going to give MGS a bad review just because of that, and not because of the gameplay, then wouldn't they lose credibility...which is the whole reason they're NOT reviewing it right now? If they wanted to "rape" the review, wouldn't they just flat out say it "sucks" and rant about Konami as well? It's not like Konami is forcing them to not speak about the cutscenes are install, they suggested it, and EGM is just showing some integrity by not agreeing with those suggestions.
Grow up. - inactive, on 06/02/2008, -2/+18oh c'mon let's not get into this *****. Xbox 360 fanboys? Look at yourself. This has NOTHING to do with MGS not coming out for the Xbox, yet you're making it that way.
- Enron, on 06/02/2008, -6/+21I just wish GameFan Magazine was still around.
- grahamvinyl, on 06/02/2008, -2/+16Get off our internet.
- HolyChimp, on 06/02/2008, -3/+17Peanuts on a PC maybe. But on a PS3 with a HDD as small as 20GB it's taking the piss a bit. Yess there are larger PS3s out there, and yes you can upgrade the HDD yourself, but most people don't, and a fair few people went out and bought the 20GB PS3 that could only fit 4 installs at one time if many more games companies have similar ideas. Luckily, they probably won't because Kojima is a mad man when it comes to making his games 'perfect'.
Will it stop people buying MGS4? No
Will it be a pain in the arse for those people who buy it and only have the smaller HDD? Yes. - jacksons98, on 06/02/2008, -6/+20Who said anything about cash? Quit trying to make this bigger than it is. EGM is complaining that they were asked not to mention cutscenes and installs, both of which are mentioned in several of the reviews I posted above. So maybe you should try reading the reviews instead of just jumping to ridiculous conspiracy theory conclusions.
- Modestexcuse, on 06/02/2008, -0/+13If it's a truly good game, it'll speak plenty for itself.
- Chakat, on 06/02/2008, -3/+16This is why there needs to be a consumer reports of gaming. Every game bought off the shelf, no advertising, no bribery. Just straight out unadulterated reviews of the final finished product, so people buying games are better informed. Game magazines these days are a joke.
- limpl0uie, on 06/02/2008, -13/+25"Of course EGM may just be using this for press and to say "look how great we are" so they may be doing the right thing for the wrong reasons."
Now we're condemning and questioning journalists for doing the right thing? As a journalism major I must say I am highly offended and...ah, ***** it...that was a pretty *****' stupid thing to say, kid. - Eminemdrdre00, on 06/02/2008, -1/+13When the game is in the stores do you think they'll pick up their own copy for a legit review?
- Planets, on 06/02/2008, -5/+17MSGIV?
- avidlinuxuser, on 06/03/2008, -6/+18Actually, Edge magazine said in their preview review there were actually two cutscenes each individually reaching the 90 minute mark. So far, more people have said there are 90 minute cutscenes than those who say there aren't.
- monkeyrun, on 06/03/2008, -1/+12lol "journalistic integrity"?
It's more like a prostitute who refuses to do anal. - ninjasenses, on 06/02/2008, -0/+11its a new hybrid sodium.
- inactive, on 06/02/2008, -4/+14Dude chill. They are just videogames, they won't get you laid.
- jasnmb, on 06/03/2008, -3/+13I wouldn't mind a 90 minute cut scene as long as I can pause or save at any time - which I think I've read that you will be able to pause.
I'm playing through MGS1-3 right now and so far I've enjoyed every cut scene except for the ending of MGS2. That whole dynamic between Raiden and his girlfriend was a bit of a yawner. - TangentThought, on 06/02/2008, -3/+1390 minute cutscenes were debunked.
- tendonut, on 06/03/2008, -0/+8That sounds like a YouTube comment...
Nothing was even mentioned about the 360. Are you so desperate to justify your possession of a PS3 that you have to turn this into a 360 vs. PS3 argument? It is completely uncalled for.
I have all 3 systems, and the PS3 fanboys are the most obnoxious of them all, and typically have the least room to comment about useless consoles.
Actually, "All the bitter 360 fanboys are getting denied their revenge for their piece of ***** 7GB " Isn't the existance of Blu-Ray exactly what is causing this problem that Konami is trying to keep under wraps? The larger the game, the longer the load times are and the larger the game installs. It's just how Blu-Ray functions. - solid12345, on 06/03/2008, -0/+8The big spoiler, the game plays for you and you just sit back and watch.
- solid12345, on 06/03/2008, -4/+12Well even if there are 60 minute cutscenes that is still just too damn long.
- scizor600, on 06/03/2008, -0/+7Raiden < Girl Scouts
- limpl0uie, on 06/02/2008, -8/+14Ah, yes. The proverbial "I took a class on it once" argument. Intelligent argument. Hard to argue with a man that took one class.
I assume you don't get your news from shallow journalists then, huh? But, wait, if journalism is a "Shallow" business then that would mean ALL journalists are shallow...right? So, you're telling me you're completely uninformed to the world's happenings? And that you're generally uneducated? And make bold and blatantly stupid statements based off one class you took one time?
I feel sorry for you... - mojorrison, on 06/02/2008, -6/+12Its not uncommon for game developers to ask reviewers to omit certain aspects of the game before it has been released for that exact reason, IT HASN'T BEEN RELEASED. It's not the final copy of the game. Once the game is released then everything is fair game. Before then it is just marketing and publicity.
- Mejogid, on 06/02/2008, -1/+7@cheappop
I guess it's a good thing those cut scenes are skipable, wouldn't you say? - chaosblade77, on 06/02/2008, -0/+6Because if reviewers can't review the entire game experience, it defeats the purpose in a review. Even if the developer is only suggesting that certain things not be mentioned, there is a problem. Developers and publishers shouldn't be able to hold anything over the reviewers and make the game sound different (for better or worse) than it is.
Whether it's a good game or not is irrelevant, reviews are meant for people who are looking for information about the game, not fans who already know about it. By leaving information out, you're basically cheating your users. - chocobomog, on 06/02/2008, -0/+6I loved how every page was covered in screenshots including backgrounds and borders, almost to the point of unreadability (which may be why it isn't still around). Had to be a graphic design nightmare, but it was awesome to see.
- piratearggghhh, on 06/02/2008, -2/+8The game is already getting outrageously high scores from initial reviews so far so I don't see what they're trying to hide. At first I thought they didn't want any spoilers but EGM's response to this makes it seem like they're trying to hide something negative. Confusing.
