GTAIV issues on PS3 'fixed', Rockstar offers apology to all
strategyinformer.com — The recent patch released for PS3 has 'fixed' the stutter and lock-up issues, it was linked with the GameSpy servers and the immense load they experienced. "Rockstar apologize for the inconvenience this has caused." GTAIV should be back in the good graces of the Sony masses once more, hopefully.

- go123, on 05/09/2008, -5/+30Although early reports suggest that some people are still experiencing the freeze issue on 60Gb machines.
I can report from my personal perspective though that the game hasn't locked up once since getting it, and that is on a 60Gb UK launch-day version of the PS3.- chocobomog, on 05/09/2008, -22/+7The problem is caused by a conflict with the PS2 chip within the 60gb PS3. UK PS3s were the first to emulate PS2 games and did not have the chip.
Sony will have to issue a firmware update to fix this.- Zamfir, on 05/09/2008, -8/+9I have a North American launch 60GB PS3 and GTA:IV runs perfectly... So I doubt the PS2 EE hardware is causing these problems for some folk.
- adventchild08, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6It is for some people...myself included...I still lock up during the intro sequence.
- DarkShroud, 16 hr 56 min ago, -0/+1No problems on my NA 60gig PS3.
- Deathrea, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3I also have a 60gb PS3 and saw the fist reports of the freezing online right after I got into the first mission. I still haven't had any issues at all.
- Sudz, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2Not a conflict with the chip. Some problem with that motherboard more likely. The 40G version has the chip but sees this problem far less often.
In any event it still sucks to be me and unable to run the damn game.
- Zamfir, on 05/09/2008, -8/+9I have a North American launch 60GB PS3 and GTA:IV runs perfectly... So I doubt the PS2 EE hardware is causing these problems for some folk.

- truspector, on 05/09/2008, -25/+16I wouldn't claim victory just yet. Seems quite a few people did not have their issues resolved with this patch.

- CollapseControl, on 05/09/2008, -34/+21Why would Rockstar be held accountable?
I would put the blame on Sony for not caring about their online service as much as others.- shinythingy, on 05/09/2008, -14/+23Christmas blackout?
- truspector, on 05/09/2008, -22/+14I was without service for ~ 1 - 2 days and even then it was sporadic. It affected some worse than others and was blown WAAAAAY out of proportion. Hell, it's been over a week and the ***** Gamespy servers still aren't working 100% right. PLUS, when those Gamespy servers are no longer profitable they will be taken down and GTA4 online will be no more on the PS3. One more reason why I went with the 360 version.
- CollapseControl, on 05/09/2008, -26/+12That was a nice response to an obvious Sony fanboy, how many times are you going to explain to nitwits that don't know *****?
Out of ~1,095 days I had XBL there were only about 5 days that I wasn't able to play online. And that certainly wasn't the end of the world. It gave me a few hours to come on digg and read about all the ***** PS3 owners have to deal with and wait for. - ilukedukei, on 05/09/2008, -11/+20I got my xbox for christmas and only used my 1 month trial. Out of my ~30 days there was about 7 days that i could play online. At least I downloaded that stupid game for free though. I here that xbox live is better now, but I'm not going to try that again.
- B1663r, on 05/09/2008, -20/+8So dial 800-4myxbox and talk to max about it. They give everyone making a waaaambulance call a free month....
- shinythingy, on 05/09/2008, -12/+4Collapse you calling anybody a fanboy is pointless. It has about as much impact as my farts do on the moon's orbit. You may have had 5 days but many people had much longer. If you think thats worth the money fine but i've never had any problems playing online on the PSN. I've had my PS3 connected for 412 days and not a problem playing online - the most important part. I probably know more about it than you because i didn't brush the XBL negativity under the carpet like you did. I don't do it with any of the big 3. Nintendo's online is ***** poor and seem to be completely ignoring gamers in favour of non-gamers, SCEE are a complete joke who don't know their arse from their elbow and who cant certify something in less than 2 weeks and MS couldn't create a working console if their lives depended on it.
- CollapseControl, on 05/09/2008, -9/+6Stop acting like the PSN is everything and then some. It clearly isn't. Unless the gamer has absolute hate for Microsoft, everyone will admit that XBL is light years ahead of PSN. The things that XBL does for gamers is what makes it so great and why millions of gamers are willing to drop a measly $50 to play for a year.
So, you just go on enjoying your PS3 and going through hoops trying to get some games going with friends. Have fun with GTAIV on PSN. It has been working perfectly on XBL, no hiccups or problems with me and all my gaming friends.
By the time PS3 actually gets their act together and have a worthwhile console us XBL gamers will be getting ready for the next installment of Xbox which will be above and beyond all expectations. And yeah, I am more than willing to spend another $500 for another console, since i'm a gamer and didn't waste money on the PS3, it'll be all good. - bejayel, on 05/09/2008, -4/+2Ho wis xbox live light years ahead? The firmware on the 360 itslef has a few neat features like in game blades, but that is about it. The 2 extra features that anyone would want on the xbox are being pushed soon anyway.
Also, i thought the PS3 was too expensive? You and truspector always bitched about the price, yet whtn the new MS console comes out and the PS3 is still going strong, you will be willing to fork out another $500. Then you say live is better, when it is laggy as all *****. You sir, are the fanboy here - johnbellone, on 05/09/2008, -4/+4I am laughing all throughout this thread, in fact, I don't enjoy getting into these squabbles, but, what the hell.
For me, not spending another $50 a year on an online service is a good thing. Xbox Live is better than the PSN, and probably worth the money, but all I need is the ability to get online and play the games. That works for me on the PS3, with all the games that I have purchased, including GTA4.
Here is the problem - the people that are complaining are usually the most vocal. I owned an Xbox and got burned by the RROD once, and a hard-drive failure the second time. I would much rather spend the extra $100 (because, face it, the Elite right now is the only Xbox that is even mildly close to not getting a RROD) than be plagued with waiting on a warranty repair. This problem has been widespread with the Xbox 360 since day one - and they got the extra year start on Sony. So before you go spouting off about how mucb better the Xbox 360 is, at least Sony has the ability to make a console that doesn't melt every couple of months.
Xbox Live is about the only thing Microsoft has going right for the console right now. They need to focus on getting the damn thing to stop breaking before they decide to release the next incarnation. For me? I'll enjoy watching movies off my NAS, plugging in off the shelf accessories (including SD cards, CF and bluetooth headsets) and my integrated wireless.
I'll forgive the occasional hiccups that I get on the PSN (which, contrary to what you have heard, are far and few between). - CollapseControl, on 05/09/2008, -4/+3Unless you have actual friends that enjoy playing video games, you won't know how great the Xbox360 is.
And when I bitch about a price of the console, the ps3, i'm mainly saying that what it offers me for the price isn't worth it.
I don't love spending money on video games, but when I do I am well aware of what i'm buying will give me plenty of entertainment. And like I said before, the 360 is the only console I ever owned that I use every single day, even if I don't want to play a game.
"Laggy as all *****", lol, ok, Get your connection fixed, I have played well over 20,000 individual matches using XBL and 99% of those games played were fine, for me and my friends. - bejayel, on 05/09/2008, -2/+3I have a 10 mbit connection, and my roomate canceled his live subscription because it was literally unplayable most of the time while PSN has never had a hiccup for me.
- estvir, on 05/09/2008, -7/+7You've never had any problems but you've also never had the benefits of Xbox Live.
I've had it for the whole duration I've owned my X360 (Over 2 years now) and during the Christmas period I was probably without a flawless service for about a week, maybe less, maybe more. I couldn't give an exact number as I was doing a ton of other things over the holidays.
So, bringing out 1 downtime issue at Christmas which didn't affect everyone nor everyone for the same amount of time is petty, desperate and minuscule. Also, you calling out someone like Collapse, truspector or whoever and saying "Well, your lack of downtime during that period doesn't count cause there were others who had longer" is hypocritical and also silly, especially so if you consider whole 'vocal minority' thing and how it's a million times worse thanks to the Internet.- xino, on 05/09/2008, -2/+5He never said that it didn't count. I think he meant that the other people that had problems over a longer period of time count also. He does have a point. That said, I am still pretty happy with Xbox Live with the exception of that.
- JagoX, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Your lack of knowledge of the issue is hilarious truspector.
For the record, "GameSpy" is more then just "servers"...it is an entire package of middleware used for games that want either the most basic network connectivity or a robust package.
- CollapseControl, on 05/09/2008, -26/+12That was a nice response to an obvious Sony fanboy, how many times are you going to explain to nitwits that don't know *****?
- Tahiri, on 05/09/2008, -8/+8The christmas outage was so bad even the 360 Blade UI froze for minutes on end.
- truspector, on 05/09/2008, -22/+14I was without service for ~ 1 - 2 days and even then it was sporadic. It affected some worse than others and was blown WAAAAAY out of proportion. - shinythingy, on 05/09/2008, -14/+23Christmas blackout?
- username9000, on 05/09/2008, -34/+14This is a PSN issue. That is what you get for free. ***** up gamespy servers. This will continue to happen on every 3rd party game that people enjoy playing online.
Home will fix it though. LMAO- Tahiri, on 05/09/2008, -4/+25That's what you get for free? Like the christmas outage?
- brianara3, on 05/09/2008, -3/+7Yeah... I would have to say that for the millions of people that got online after the gta release this isn't bad for a free service.

Gamespy servers /= PSN.
Are there really that many PS3 owners that are ignorant or are there really that many 360 fanboys trying to bash the playstation 3?- bejayel, on 05/09/2008, -4/+3That many 360 owners trying to bash the PS3. It could be better, we could be paying $50 a year to host our own servers right?
- ilukedukei, on 05/09/2008, -10/+2The "fix" doesn't work for all of us. I bought GTA4 at the midnight release and i still cannot play it. I hear it is good though. Maybe you should get your facts straight before you talk about things you have no idea about. I guess their is different "types" of crashing and type 2 people are out of luck. I personally believe it is due to junk hardware.
- cyrix, on 05/09/2008, -0/+9Funny you say above that you're a previous PS3 owner yet somehow you "still cannot play it." If you're a previous PS3 owner how can you still not play something if you don't have the hardware necessary to play it? Are you just staring at your PS3 copy of GTAIV screaming at it to work?
- blackhole82, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3If you're a potential PS3 owner, how do you claim to know anything about the network?

- misterdrumz, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3I have a UK 40gb (swapped out for a 320gb HDD) but I've only ever had one freeze when switching radio stations back and forth quickly. Since the patch last night I have noticed a small framerate improvement. I was on a mission where I followed a train, noticable improvement to my framrate today. Not much but heck, it's better than a kick in the pants!
- ausfahrt, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2I have a 60 gb North America launch console and it's still freezing. Played for the longest i ever have but it froze on me and now has gona back to freezing within 2 minutes of starting. This has not been fixed.
- selfdisplaced, on 05/09/2008, -16/+47You people complaining about Sony's online experience are stupid. First off it's free, secondly I feel a whole lot better about this issue when I'M NOT PAYING FOR IT (see; xbox live)
And I have yet to even try to go an play the multi-player, I've been to busy with the rest of the game.- truspector, on 05/09/2008, -38/+12I'd rather pay for a black angus burger for dinner tonight than eat a sloppy joe for free. I agree, for poor kids that can't afford $4 a month and don't need an online community, the PSN is great.

- selfdisplaced, on 05/09/2008, -4/+12come on 5 years is a generous estimate for the life of a xbox 360.

For all the ***** they take for being soulless animals, they're actually pretty nice for a gaming company :D- KMartSheriff, on 05/09/2008, -2/+8While I agree with you, I still feel a bit cheated by game companies for even having to bother with patches on consoles in the first place.
- brianara3, on 05/09/2008, -3/+1Sure as hell beats just leaving it busted.... (aka, last gen consoles)
- wontstoptalking, on 05/09/2008, -11/+9Jesus, that was fast! I think Rockstar has just made the fastest bug fix I've ever seen. Kudos to them.
- logicalnoise, on 05/09/2008, -7/+4some ps3 games have had bug fixes the day they launched.

- staticneuron, on 05/09/2008, -2/+5What he is trying to say is that people who do not have a connection problem means there isn't one on the PSN. IT might be a provider issue, home network issue, or game server issue but it cannot be PSN as a whole if everyone isn't having the same issues.
- Tahiri, on 05/09/2008, -2/+19Same to you
- Zamfir, on 05/09/2008, -8/+42Ssssh! Don't try to reason with the Sony hate-train! Instead, you should blindly accept as fact, the opinions from those who don't even own a PS3 over your own personal experiences. CHOOO! CHOOO! CHUG-A-LUG!
- Robbothehood, on 05/09/2008, -5/+2I think we really need to drop the act, people who hate the PS3 on digg are a minority, there isn't some kind of hate-train or anything. Just look at the diggs for these comments.
- actionscripted, on 05/09/2008, -2/+5There is a hate-train, and it seems that most of the passengers (as mentioned above) don't even own a PS3.
- VinnieDaMac, on 05/09/2008, -5/+5Theres a video on youtube with "hackers" on COD4 PSN.
- daizaru, on 05/09/2008, -4/+2True, that is unfortunate but the usual argument is the inability to find online games due to not having a 'live' type system.
- Tahiri, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2Um, what about PSN doesn't have matchmaking?
- logicalnoise, on 05/09/2008, -25/+8you =/= everybody
- Darren05, on 05/09/2008, -3/+9When you think of the technical logistics involved it is quite a minor bug and quickly fixed so thanks.
- andyt888, on 05/09/2008, -10/+2Glad its fixed. The freeze caused my PS3 to overheat and I am now waiting on a replacement. My GTA disk is stuck inside it, so I have to wait for another month for them to return it. Gutted!
- xino, on 05/09/2008, -3/+9Poor ventilation is probably what caused your PS3 to overheat. A game locking up could be a result of overheating, but not the other way around.
- VinnieDaMac, on 05/09/2008, -7/+8At least PSN is free.....or is it because of this that PSN is free....?
- TrancePhreak, on 05/09/2008, -2/+4They mention the GameSpy servers getting overloaded... so because PSN is free sounds like it.
- ericrous, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1If PSN wasn't free, maybe they could afford their OWN servers (like MS).

- sijimbo, on 05/09/2008, -3/+8I put off buying either the Xbox or PS3 after seeing early signs of bugs. GTA IV was the definitive factor that make me decide to purchase one of these consoles. I have friends that have both consoles that gave me their perspective of both systems. PS3 is a powerhouse that did start with some glitches and issues, but many of those have been ironed out or are being ironed out. Xbox is also a great gaming system.........when it is not giving you the red ring of death. I have yet to come across anybody whose Xbox 360 has NOT had this fault. I recently purchased the 40GB PS3, updated the firmware, and put a 320GB hard drive. So far I'm loving it.
- ilukedukei, on 05/09/2008, -10/+5I also have a PS3 and you made the wrong decision... As did I. Glitches happen in most games and do not get completely fixed. Again I'm truly sorry for your loss.
- logan074, on 05/09/2008, -3/+7To each his own though. I owned both systems and ended up selling my 360 after the fourth red ring.
- brianara3, on 05/09/2008, -2/+3A buddy of mine had the rrod and his 360 got lost in the mail coming back from microsoft... it took 4 months to get it finally replaced by ms. That was even after they told him they were not going to continue pursuing the shipping company and wouldn't replace it. Now 2 months later... rrod on the new one, what a piece of crap.
- daizaru, on 05/09/2008, -2/+7GTA4 is the first game I have had issues with and it's not really a fault of the PS3 but the way they designed GTA4.
- cyrix, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8If you have a PS3 why did you say earlier that you're a former PS3 owner? You keep switching this around. "I have a PS3." "I don't have a PS3." "I like muffins and hate PS3."
- kingmanic, on 05/09/2008, -1/+6'Thirded
Thanks,
Previous PS3 Owner' - ilukedukei (earlier in another thread)
You claim to have played PS3 GTA VI, claimed to have got rid of it, and in this thread claimed to currently have one. Either there is a really odd circumstance where had a PS3, bought GTA VI last week then sold all of it then bought it back or you are a liar. I think it seems more likely you are a liar.
- logan074, on 05/09/2008, -3/+7To each his own though. I owned both systems and ended up selling my 360 after the fourth red ring.
- chedonline, on 05/09/2008, -2/+3I bought an xbox 360 and no problems. Any xboxes made after October of last year have the new heatsinks and DVD drives.
- sijimbo, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Perhaps in time if I hear enough from my friends and coworkers that they haven't been having issues I may also decide to purchase an Xbox 360. I own every system except the 360. I gave up on the original xbox after I went through two of them. I have a day 1 PS2 that is still going strong to this day my original xbox sits in the corner as I refuse to pour any more money into it.
- dig1x, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1" I have yet to come across anybody whose Xbox 360 has NOT had this fault."
Absolute fiction. For some reason, I doubt your sincerity.- sijimbo, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0I see your account was activated on April 27th, 2008 and based off of the amount of diggs you have participated in that time period you appear to be quite familiar with the process. Your favorite topics appear to be US Elections 2008, Xbox, Gaming Industry News, Odd Stuff, and Microsoft. I would guess you are a Corporate Troller who consistently creates new accounts to manipulate diggs in favor of your benefactor. But that is just my opinion. I'm curious...I have shown you my logic behind my opinion.........what is your logic behind your claim that my opinion is ficiton? Do you know my friends? Do you know me? Making Non sequitur statements just shows your ignorance.
- ilukedukei, on 05/09/2008, -10/+5I also have a PS3 and you made the wrong decision... As did I. Glitches happen in most games and do not get completely fixed. Again I'm truly sorry for your loss.
- Ansem, on 05/09/2008, -8/+6The Playstation 3, will retail for... Five Hundred and Ninety Nine US Dollars.
- PurpleSfinx, on 05/09/2008, -4/+4So here's this giant enemy price.
I'm sorry, I had to, ok!?!?!? - brianara3, on 05/09/2008, -3/+4aka... now selling for $50 more than an xbox 360.... @ $399
For $50 you get blu-ray and a bigger hard drive. - bejayel, on 05/09/2008, -2/+3The PS2 retails for $399. The 360 premium retails for $349, then 50 for live. In other words, the exact same god damn price.
- PurpleSfinx, on 05/09/2008, -4/+4So here's this giant enemy price.
- annenk38, on 05/09/2008, -3/+3Any news on fixing insane use of bloom effect and forced FOV? I want to be able to see things up the street, dammit!
- daizaru, on 05/09/2008, -1/+4I'm glad they are at least adding some patches. It was ridiculous that the single player game would fail to load or freeze solely because it kept querying the gamespy servers every 2 minutes. Pretty big blunder and their proposed fix beforehand involved deleting your save games when all you had to do was log out of PSN.
This game has been good cannon fodder for the xbox fanboys, I guess that Zero Punctuation Episode really didn't "learn them any". "That Yahtzee is funny, making fun of rampant fanboyism... what a bunch of losers... oh look a link about PS3... PS3 SUX!!!!" - CaseyButt, on 05/09/2008, -2/+3what about the 360? I havent been able to get into a multiplayer match in a week! Where is the apology to the 360 owners? The ***** thing is we actually have to pay to play online and we don't get ***** from rockstar.
- hollismb, on 05/09/2008, -3/+2There's a bug with the HUD in GTA IV going well into the 'safe overscan' area on some HDTVs as well in HD resolutions.. at least on the 360 version. I switched back and forth between 720p and 480p yesterday, and it's pretty obvious. This same bug was in Halo 2 when it first came out, and was quickly patched, so hopefully Rockstar will do the same.
- eryximachus, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2What happens in this "safe overscan"?
All I know is the graphics in GTA IV on the PS3 are definitely not 720p. Tis a real shame.- bejayel, on 05/09/2008, -3/+3and yet, for some reason the PS3 version look exceptionally better when compared to the 360.
- hollismb, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3What happens in this "safe overscan"?
Most displays, especially CRT's have a little bit of the image bleed of the screen and not displayed. It's normally around 3-5% of the height/width, so developers and tv broadcasts keep icons, logos, HUD info, displayed further inside than that percentage to mafe sure they show up. What's happening in this case, is that on some displays (mine, for example), the HUD, when in an HD resolution, expands out larger, and goes into that 3-5% of screen that it shouldn't so some people can't see their money, wanted indicator, or ends of street names... stuff like that.
I've got my overscan set to a pretty low percentage (since I calibrated my set), so I can see everything, but if it shifted over even a few pixels, it would start bleeding off the edge of the screen.

- spacebuddy, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1Have a PS3, have not had one problem with GTA off-line or on-line. The game is awesome.
- dig1x, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Were you able to play online during the first two days when the Multiplayer was totally unavailable too?
- Killacub, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1Does anyone have any information on the 360 version freezing? My game won't load past the copyright screen. The disc works fine in other 360's. I've heard nothing about a patch.
- mustafya, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2I had the same issue at first. I had my 360 set to start up to dashboard and then I was starting the game from there. I ***** you not I switched my 360 to start by booting the disc in the drive and GTA IV started working all the sudden.
- Killacub, on 05/10/2008, -1/+0Meh, didn't work. But thanks anyway. I'll just go back to trying to convince myself the games not that good anyway. Least till a patch comes out. Just sucks the only information I've been able to find is none at all.

- Trat, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0I would trade it if I was you; 360 =
RROD
Ripoff online play
Small internal HDD
Archaic storage medium
King of the low maintenance games

- BenRussoUSA, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1It didn't fix anything for me. My 60GB PS3 bought in spring 2007 still freezes when trying to play GTA-IV, complete lockups (except the sound keeps going). Have to reboot the PS3 to do anything. And I cant even play the game for 2 minutes without it freezing. Have tried everything that has been suggested, and no improvements at all.
- RolltheStampede, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1they still need to fix Carmen, she healed me one time. every other time she just gives me advise a a bleed on the carseat
