- TheWilder, on 01/19/2009, -5/+89The number one thing holding most people back is price. If they can just lower it to $299 or even just to $349, then everything won't look all doom and gloom for Sony.
- thizzlebot, on 01/20/2009, -4/+59just remake FINAL ***** FANTASY 7 and they will have so much ***** money that they could fill 20 olympic pools
- nickert0n, on 01/19/2009, -27/+67Hands down, Personally, and I do stress personally, I enjoy my PS3 more than my dust collecting 360.
The PS3 has better games for me, Quality over Quantity. However, this article has some very unbiased good points.
Price does need to come down $100 and they need to do better WAY better advertising.
The games on the PS3 I enjoy, the average gamer would love, but in conversation knows nothing about
(Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, Warhawk, Uncharted)
PLUS
I think Killzone 2 is going to give the console a Halo 3 level Facelift, I know thats saying allot, but the game looks that good and I really cant wait. - ThePeacemaker02, on 01/19/2009, -6/+40The price is definitely the biggest barrier here. My dad was looking for a Blu-Ray player and I recommended the PS3. He did some research and he found a Panasonic one. It was small, almost half the price. Before it was easy to justify the price of the PS3 next to Blu-Ray by maybe 50 -100 dollars but now the gap is becoming larger. I don't want to see Sony tank, I know the PS3 has potential and I really enjoy mine. Until I see the online fixed though I'm probably going to be buying games for my 360 minus the exclusives.
- kinseyincanada, on 01/20/2009, -0/+23look people both the 360 and the PS3 are great systems they have pretty much the exact same games give or take a few any 'real' gamer does not pledge allegiance to some god damn company. They play games because they are fun and are good to kill some time with. Both systems have games, both systems have great features. So just shut up and go play some of the amazing games that have been released this past year.
- reyoo30309, on 01/19/2009, -9/+31For crying out loud cut to the point.
- roxya, on 01/19/2009, -15/+36The ***** is he talking about with Resistance 2? It uses your PSN friends list. Any game I've bought recently uses the same PSN friends list. And let's face it, if I have to end up paying for online just for cross-game invites, Sony could go ***** themselves. I'm not paying for that. It's not a big feature.
"Or let's say I own both systems, and the content comes to the 360 first. That's where I'm buying it. Why wait?"
Because not all of us are tech review sites who get free copies of games for both systems? If I bough the PS3 version, I'm hardly gonna buy 360 DLC for it am I? - Morac, on 01/19/2009, -10/+31>Sorry, but PS3 sold more in its first 2 years then the Xbox360 did.
Only in Europe and Japan. In North America, the PS3 is lagging way behind where the X360 was at that time.
http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii® ...
The PS3 was catching up with the X360 in 2008 until Microsoft dropped the price on the X360. Once that happened, X360s starting outselling PS3s by over 2 to 1. This will continue to happen until Sony drops the price of the PS3. Sony should have dropped the price when Microsoft did, but they dropped the ball.
http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php - thatdumbguy, on 01/20/2009, -2/+22This weekend I got a new 360 elite. I stood in the store for like a half hour trying to decide if I wanted a ps3 instead, almost got one. At first I was thinking 360 for the lower price but mostly it came down to what system my friends have. Almost everyone I know that games has a 360, I know 2 people that have a ps3 and I have only played it twice. I don't know why I went for the elite, I just like the way it looks, not really worth an extra $100 but I am liking it, my favorite part is streaming my movies/ music over to my tv.
- bigteebo, on 01/20/2009, -2/+22They really should have kept the backwards compatibility. Would have been nice to swap out my PS2 and just put the PS3 in instead of maintaining TWO video game consoles, TWO sets of controllers, TWO sets of video & audio ports to deal with, TWO power outlets, and so forth. I would have had blu-ray, ps3 games, ps2 games(then I can finish my old games) & other fun things.
But that & the high price turned me away to the 360. Sony, the victory was right in front of you. - whatthefu, on 01/20/2009, -1/+19Well, to be fair, they said the same thing about Killzone 1, which was a disappointment. I think the PS3 will turn out okay, but I wouldn't count on Killzone being a saving grace.
- inactive, on 01/19/2009, -11/+25Ditto on the price! We wanted one but the xbox was >$100 cheaper!
- username9000, on 01/19/2009, -16/+30"What do we want? Cross-game invites. We want voice chat in all games. We want... well, we want Xbox Live on the PS3. Don't tell me that's impossible to do for free—Valve created what amounts to a PC version of Xbox Live with Steam's social features, and that doesn't cost anything. "
"Or, and here's an idea: charge for it. You need to make money on the PS3. People are willing to pay for a good online strategy. Admit you're wrong, and move forward. Saying your online service is free is kind of a lame argument when your online service consists of whatever the developers want to give away on a game-by-game basis. Microsoft has a checklist of things developers have to do in terms of online play on the Xbox 360, and that strategy means when you buy a 360 game, you know what you're getting in terms of online play. This is an idea you need to steal."
Here Here! Finally someone in the game press understands why PSN sucks ass. I would gladly pay for PSN if Sony brought something other than a second life clone to the table. - JRPereira, on 01/20/2009, -2/+15Doesn't really matter when both are great and a little greater isn't worth $100.
- inactive, on 01/19/2009, -3/+16*cheap?
Well any $10 USB headset works. - itseffinkasey, on 01/20/2009, -0/+13Honestly I don't even know if this is possible but they should definitely look into it, ad PS2 backwards compatibility back to all the PS3s and make it and update so I can disconnect my damn PS2 from my tv.
- mrfreeziexp, on 01/20/2009, -0/+13Another thing Sony needs to fix is advertising. Why aren't they pushing Killzone like MS pushed Halo? Killzone should be all over 7 Elevens, it should be on buses, it should be on TV, it should be everywhere like Halo was. But, I haven't seen ANYTHING about Killzone. Same thing with LittleBigPlanet. I consider myself quite up-to-date as far as video games go, I visit Joystiq and Kotaku every day. But, even as involved I am, I'm completely in the dark as to what Killzone looks like, what some of the guns look like, characters, story. So, consider the average college-age gamer. Have they even HEARD of Killzone? Sony is just lazy, IMO. They really need an executive shakeup.
- santasing, on 01/20/2009, -0/+12The 80GB PS3 is available right now on dell.com for $340. Big discounts on the 360, PSP etc. as well.
- Jaysunli, on 01/20/2009, -2/+13N64 had $80 games.
- Spanq, on 01/20/2009, -0/+10Get the damn games out! Where the ***** is GT5? Where is SSX?
- Chewie67, on 01/20/2009, -0/+10No way.
The PSN rental store is a joke. The movie selection is minuscule, and an HD movie rental costs $6. Six Dollars. That's nearly the cost of a full month of Netflix. - Kriztov, on 01/20/2009, -5/+14I'd doubt that about Killzone 2, as I remember, they were hailing Killzone as the Halo killer back in the day, and that didnt live up to the expectations. Truth is that the PS3 controller is not designed properly for the FPS genre because it uses too light springs. If you try both controllers (which you can since you said you have them both) you'll notice that the 360 has noticably more pushback than the PS3 controller, and that little difference completely changes the circumstances. I think rather than concentrating on the FPS market, they should try and get more from the RPG genre released on PS3. Not that I am a RPGfag, but its a very big market. Personally, I'm more of a racing kind of guy, so the PS3's weaker springs is better for me because it allows me to adjust throttle and steering easier. I will say that gear changing on the PS3 is weak though, because you tap the stick and it sometimes flicks back so hard that you go straight back down a gear.
- VinnieDaMac, on 01/20/2009, -15/+24PS3 is never gonna "turn the tide." All it can do now is just catch up.
- TheMachine1, on 01/20/2009, -1/+10An external flux capacitor would get me in the store buying a PS3. If you could combined time travel with gaming that would rock.
- KingPsyz, on 01/20/2009, -1/+10not a selling feature, hard to market EASY TO PIRATE GAMES ON you know...
plus at least Sony not only allows it, but encourages users ready for the plunge to install linux and larger HDDs - Kriztov, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8Its the price and reputation that they've gained in the past. For the PS and PS2 models, they always started high, and got lower later in the year, so those out the loop are still waiting for it to go down in price.
- MrSmiley909, on 01/20/2009, -1/+9Things I would like to see:
FLAC support.
iPod Support. How the hell does Microsoft have iPod support but the PS3 doesn't?
AAC metadata support.
Please Sony, stop development on your Home failure and fix these simple things.
- psychohog, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8Frontlines : Fuel of war is 50 players on XBL
- quomen, on 01/20/2009, -1/+8Price of games is what kills me. Of course, that applies to all the other consoles, but I miss the days of $40-$50 dollar new games.
- therippa, on 01/20/2009, -4/+11I don't even use my PS3 for games really, but as a blu-ray player an upnp device, it's worth every penny to me.
- inactive, on 01/20/2009, -1/+8They had backward compatibility, but asswipes like you wanted it taken out because reliable hardware apparently costs too ***** much.
- Topher06, on 01/19/2009, -12/+19There is nothing wrong with the PSN twit and you are obviously buying into this propaganda. Look, every multiplayer game I have played on the PS3 allows me to easily and quickly connect to other players around the world and also allows me to set up games quickly and easily with my friends, what more do you want? That is the point of multiplayer, to connect multiple players together. PSN does that as well as Live IMHO.
Its FREE too, I don't have to pay to play multiplayer games.
Also, the PSN is more then just about connecting to people online. The store is far better then Microsoft's version and has a lot more content to access. The quality of PSN games are far better as well as Sony doesn't limit the size or features of a PSN game just to suit the weakness of the Live Network and the fact Microsoft ships the Arcade version without a hard drive.
I could care less if you ever get the PS3, but you are buying into the propaganda that started on day 1 of the PS3 release and I really can't stand people that don't think for themselves. - m00nstone, on 01/20/2009, -0/+7Always match the price of the 360 or they are doomed to be the #3 console. If they do that, maybe they catch Microsoft next Xmas... maybe.
- KirbyMorph, on 01/20/2009, -0/+7But can it reach 88 mph?
- fuzzynyanko, on 01/20/2009, -0/+7Problem with that is the Netflix CEO is one of Microsoft's Board of Directors. Now, Blockbuster and Amazon on the other hand...
- KirbyMorph, on 01/20/2009, -2/+9It doesnt cost $60 for live.
- Memnochxx, on 01/20/2009, -1/+8You can have 18 in CoD:WW. And I'm unfamiliar with the communication in those games, is it 30 people on your team screaming at once?
- johncourt, on 01/20/2009, -0/+7Don't get me wrong - I Love Sony. I have to admit that I completely agree with this article. Sony wants to be total home entertainment, but they lost the fact they are still a game system. "Play" "Station" is all I have to say, not all-in-one home entertainment.
My opinion is to play out the system and focus on PS4 (online and fun). - fuzzynyanko, on 01/20/2009, -1/+8Fanboys will debate the "not enough games" part. However, I do agree with DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS
- KirbyMorph, on 01/20/2009, -0/+6You honestly believe this? PS3 games look just like 360 games. If MS comes out with a new console with better graphics and the same price as the PS3, which is in it for 'longevity', in 2 years time, why would anyone buy the PS3?
- anubis2night, on 01/20/2009, -3/+9Please read article. Your point is already argued there and is rather arbitrary at this point.
- fuzzynyanko, on 01/20/2009, -0/+6If not doing it already, take some source code from their 1st-party games and release it to dev kit owners
- Jaysunli, on 01/20/2009, -3/+9Gears 2 is a horrible and biased example of Xbox Lives performance.
It's well known that Gears 2 has horrible multiplayer/online problems. - isgk, on 01/20/2009, -1/+7Did you actually think about what you said? If MS & Nintendo come out with new systems, how many people do you think are going to be saving up for the "last generation" PS3 compared to the new generation system? If Sony plans on keeping the PS3 out for years and years after the next generation consoles come out from the competitors they are dead, because they simply won't be able to keep up tech wise... unless you are saying that the Sony PS3 will turn into the Wii of the next generation, lower tech, better game play attraction.
- pika2000, on 01/20/2009, -1/+71. Put back PS2 backward compatibility. I find it hard to believe that PS2 backward compatibility is a significant part of the cost of the PS3. Sony failed their own promise of Playstation being platform, and it shows. The PS3 game library is not as extensive as PS2 yet. The PS2 started pretty weak on its game library too, but it garnered a huge of userbase due to its ability to play PS1 games. It's ironic that Sony forgot its won formula of success.
2. Put some effort so Home can be what it was hyped to be. Currently, it's just a glorified virtual IRC chatroom. As usual, Sony seems to put more effort on the Japanese side of things, including Home.
3. Stop cutting down features without dropping price. The current PS3s are just the lowly 40GB version with larger hard-drives. Only 2 USB ports, no SACD support, no flash card reader, yet it is still more expensive than the competitors. The least Sony could do is bundle an HDMI cable in the box. Sony is advertising HD to no end, yet still bundles the silly composite cable with the PS3.
4. Focus on exclusives. When Squenix announced FF13 going multi, Sony did pretty much nothing. Even worse, it won't be released outside Japan until April 2010. WTF? Sony, wake up and realize that your system is not only sold in Japan.
I'm glad that I spent the money and bought the original 60GB. Sony seems to forget the "Play" in Playstation. Also, Sony needs to realize that they are a global company with a global market. Colorful PS3s? Japan only. Sony is going to release a special edition of FF7: Advent Children PS3. Guess what? It's Japan only. - Chewie67, on 01/20/2009, -3/+9Here's #5: Work out a deal with Netflix like Microsoft did with the 360. After gaming, it's a home theater device. Blu-ray is fantastic, but Netflix give you more choices at a moments notice. MAKE THE DEAL.
- octodd, on 01/20/2009, -0/+5I agree 100% but the price cannot be $349 it HAS to be $299. They will sell units like hotcakes for ppl waiting for the price to drop and for a nice priced blu-ray player.
- SnoopE89, on 01/20/2009, -3/+8Seriously man, Matchmaking in Gears 2 is awful, ever played Halo 3,Halo 2, or CoD4, you maybe heard of them, matchmaking performance is based on the developers, not on the Live service you twit :P O and also you can have alot of players in a game, just depends on the game again, some game developers decide that 30vs30 is stupid and your just chucking numbers in there to say you can do it but lack on gameplay and fun factor.
- Treshnell, on 01/20/2009, -0/+5http://www.cheapassgamer.com
Love that site. - sugarazor, on 01/20/2009, -2/+7There hasn't been a size limit on XBLA games since Symphony of the Night came out and that was well over a year ago.
