FFXIII to be released this year, promises Square

joystiq.com — Not only does Tetsuya Nomura swear by the game's 2008 release date, he also teases at a playable demo for FFXIII on the PlayStation Network a while before the game is released, to show off the game's revamped battle system.

The plot will be extremely linear, unrelated to previous games, and the main characters will fight the ultimate evil in their reality. There will be a plot twist at some point, usually involving the final boss.

    Oh wait, that's the every FF since VIII. I miss IV and VI.

This game is probably the end-all of budget costs for the PS3 atm, and the PS3 simply doesn't have the installed userbase for Square to be able to turn a profit right now. If they do by the end of this year, they will probably release it. Kind of a double edged sword for Sony, though. This is probably the single game that will jumpstart sales for the PS3 in Japan.

  • sat0shi, on 01/28/2008, -0/+4Yeah, I'm a translator that has worked for Square on a few occasions and a translator of countless video games. These days games are localized pretty much while they are being developed. Granted, FF games have a whole lot more text than other games might, but the schedules for localizations are pretty tight nowadays. I've had to translate massive RPG games before in like one month or less. Don't blame me for bad localizations, btw, the conditions we have to work with are terrible. Most of the time, since the game is under development while it's being translated we aren't given access to the game itself, and instead we're presented with a bunch of random strings in no particular order. Imagine translating what a person in some village is talking about, from the middle of the game, out of context, when you've never played the game before.

    Sony's mistake wasn't taking too long to release the PS3, it was not having a good grasp on what the gaming market wanted and at what price point. Its almost like they've been tossing SKUs out blindly trying to find one that works and that doesn't cost them too much to produce. Maybe they'll hit a bullseye, but it doesn't seem like they're the ones leading the way this generation. If they can get the PS3 out at a price that I'll pay, with enough exclusive games that I want to play I'll buy one. But I'm in no rush, the library just isn't there yet, and my PS2 is still keeping me entertained when I'm not playing with my Wii.
