Everything About Blu-ray-to-PSP Movie Transfer
gizmodo.com — When we heard about Blu-ray-to-PSP movie transfers getting all official we got pretty excited, even though the announcement was a little skimpy on the details: How big are the files? How long will it take to download a movie? How odious is the DRM? Most importantly, when? Well, we've got 'em all right here.

- masbestiaquetu, on 01/10/2008, -17/+5this would be extremely useful if sony ditched UMD for a ssd/hard drive.
- JayD16, on 01/10/2008, -4/+10They just released 16 gig memsticks. Wish granted...
- WhereAmI, on 01/10/2008, -2/+3300 dollars.
- FoxOrian, on 01/10/2008, -1/+2UMD isn't all that bad for the purpose of the PSP itself, MiniDisc never caught on much in the states, but hell it's still popular in Japan.
And a solid state drive in the PSP? For a decent capacity, watch as the PSP price rises $100+.- WhereAmI, on 01/10/2008, -1/+1I'd be fine with that, but I am aware thats just me. UMD removal will take out some of the price.
- Tahiri, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4Yes that'd be smart, a PSP without the ability to play PSP games.
- JayD16, on 01/10/2008, -4/+10They just released 16 gig memsticks. Wish granted...
- need2digg, on 01/10/2008, -2/+15With 4Gb MS Duo cards going so cheap these days, I'd rather 'stick' with being able to swap cards to carry around loads of movies instead of being stuck with a hard drive. The heat, weight and noise from even the smallest drive would be a pain too, and flash memory would be too inflexible. Four movies on a stick sounds good to me - can't wait for this functionality.
- go123, on 01/10/2008, -1/+11Agree - especially now a 4Gb stick is < £30 in the UK (less if you want to gamble on eBay)
- Maynza, on 01/10/2008, -12/+4You obviously don't have a PSP the umd drive is loud as *****, thats why I download all my games :/ the UMD's loading sounds like the disk is literally being etched.
- samdu, on 01/10/2008, -1/+8Yeah... THAT's why you download all your games...
- Tahiri, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4Maynza obviously doesn't own a PSP. The thing is pretty quiet.
- WhereAmI, on 01/10/2008, -1/+3On slickdeals.net they had (well Fry's had technically) a 4GB for $35. Bought two for my brother and I.
- shampoovta, on 01/10/2008, -2/+2 !6 gigs =16 movies! on a stick of GUM!!!!! Amazing.
more or less.
- thisisftg, on 01/10/2008, -2/+26I think that this is a awesome idea... Great Job Sony!!
- Dracusis, on 01/10/2008, -4/+2You mean *an* awesome idea right?
Oh, and just a single exclamation is more than enough to get your point across!- Rizzen, on 01/10/2008, -3/+1You are the most polite grammar nazi ever.
- Dracusis, on 01/10/2008, -4/+2You mean *an* awesome idea right?
- DesignEx, on 01/10/2008, -1/+10This would be a good move for Sony after all that super DRM crap they were touting, I just hope they don't try to implement it on this... they could use some good press.
- samdu, on 01/10/2008, -3/+6Make no mistake, this WILL have DRM.
- WhereAmI, on 01/10/2008, -4/+3DRM != a rootkit
But nevermind, nothing I say will teach you anything that makes sense.- shampoovta, on 01/10/2008, -4/+2No no,..I did read the homebrew stuff on PSP forums be for they kicked them off. I fined it fascinating.
Will there be a root kit for the PSP fat and Skyp?
- shampoovta, on 01/10/2008, -4/+2No no,..I did read the homebrew stuff on PSP forums be for they kicked them off. I fined it fascinating.
- JupiterSSJ4, on 01/10/2008, -4/+5can already do this now with my BD-ROM on my laptop and AnyDVD HD, along with other encoding programs
- topbravo, on 01/10/2008, -2/+7yeah but you are neglecting to speak about how much time it would take to encode that HUUUUUUUUUGE file. DVDshrink takes about 45 mins for shrinking a dual layer down to 4.7gigs... I gladly endure this. Also think of of the NETFLIX capability of this. We can just rent all the movies and store them on the PSP. Pretty neat.
- WhereAmI, on 01/10/2008, -2/+5They will probably have it so that the big rental places don't have that. After all, they are talking about a file on the disc, not ripping to the PSP.
- triplehelix, on 01/10/2008, -0/+2big difference between having programs to do it, and having an option sanctioned by the studios that just required a 5 minute transfer.

- topbravo, on 01/10/2008, -5/+13I think we all can agree that Sony has really got its act together during the past year. KUDOS, you have endured the malström that the press(and m$ sponsored blogger) had it out for you. Cheers to the future of PSP2PS3 connectivity.
- yomama6969, on 01/10/2008, -8/+3Great news for someone like myself who now has a PS3 & PSP...but you just know DRM will ***** it up somehow
DRM=poo- EoinOL, on 01/10/2008, -0/+0Well...there's going to be DRM.
However, I don't see how it will ***** it up. This is a feature that we currently don't have, so we can't lose anything. At the very least, we'll be able to copy some movies from PS3 to one PSP (and not people own more than one). There may be a limit on the the amount of times it's been copied or how it can be shared - but obviously, although it'd be nice if those limits weren't there, this is still something that will be useful to lots of people.- yomama6969, on 01/10/2008, -1/+0fair call...man, its just too easy to be a hater on digg sometimes!
- EoinOL, on 01/10/2008, -0/+0Well...there's going to be DRM.
- minigamer1896, on 01/10/2008, -2/+3Interesting timing for me to see this headline, as I just ordered a PSP.
- sporg, on 01/10/2008, -1/+9DRM is a joke and has not slowed piracy down one tiny bit.
- Comanche, on 01/10/2008, -0/+1So then don't use the service. Some people don't give a ***** about DRM as long as it plays.
- iheijoushin, on 01/10/2008, -1/+2Hopefully they won't limit it to the PSP and might add support for other (more) popular devices much like the new Family Guy DVD supports both iPod and WMV-protected formats. It's brilliant only because it is precisely how things should be.
Maybe I am cynical...But somehow I doubt Sony will start listening to the consumer.- shampoovta, on 01/10/2008, -2/+1when I can play my itunes stuff on my PSP. Ipods have way to much memory for what little they offer for my taste. I like itunes but alas it is not to be.

- JimXugle, on 01/10/2008, -2/+9Wait...
lemme see if I understand this.
DVD to iPod = illegal
Blu Ray to PSP = Legal
...- Tahiri, on 01/10/2008, -0/+3You don't understand.
You breaking the copy protection on a DVD to convert it to iPod = illegal
Sony allowing you to copy a file off the Bluray, with DRM locking it to up to 5 PSPs bound to your PS3 = legal
Keep in mind I'm just clarifying the reality as opposed to your statement. I agree both are legal.
- Tahiri, on 01/10/2008, -0/+3You don't understand.
- lademic, on 01/10/2008, -9/+1Is Blue-Ray a better standard than HD-DVD? http://jisto.com/index.php?j=wdj2g
- thebadrash, on 01/10/2008, -1/+3Yes. Because its capabilities/specifications are better and also because HD-DVD is now a dead format.
- pigfister, on 01/10/2008, -3/+2It has more DRM and is the DRM choice of the MPAA because they want total control of the hardware and the software!!
The MPAA Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, DISNEY, PARAMOUNT, FOX.
The RIAA Soundexchange Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, EMI.
- pigfister, on 01/10/2008, -5/+1sad waste of money, straining to see a tiny screen with poor battery life.
- Tahiri, on 01/10/2008, -1/+5Mine lasts 6 hours on average. 3 times longer than my laptop. I've never had a problem with it's battery life, though I do have a problem with idiots like you complaining about it. Especially since PSPs screen is the largest of almost any HANDHELD device.
- eryximachus, on 01/10/2008, -0/+2Yeah, the battery life on the PSP is a problem I have never encountered, and I use on the subway several rides a week (if I get a seat). For domestic flights, it's also quite handy due to the small size.
Only on intercontinental flights would it be an issue, but I usually redeye them myself so I am sound asleep most of the time.

- mdaize, on 01/10/2008, -0/+2I have had no problems with mine... as with the last post, my regular battery lasts ~6 hours...
Although I do have a super battery (the larger version) and it lasts roughly 8-9 hours without a problem!
The screens are absolutly amazing; clearest screen I have every seen, and most definitely not too small/tiny... it works perfectly...
how about u give it a try before knocking it lol

- mdaize, on 01/10/2008, -0/+2great value for a great handheld with a great-sized screen and long battery life
- shelbygt33, on 01/10/2008, -0/+1I hope they will allow the file to be transferred to a USB flash pen, not just a memory stick duo. I have a 40GB (read - no memory card slots)
- Kwipper, on 01/11/2008, -3/+1Let me get this straight. I am going to take a movie that is designed for 1920 x 1080 resolution and convert to down to a size of 480 x 272 so I can watch it on my PSP. Why? That is completely ***** retarded. I can already do this with ordinary DVD's, so what is so special about blu-ray? Just because it's Blu-Ray isn't going to make a ***** difference when it's converted down to PSP resolution.
***** retarded *****... - jackmota1, on 01/22/2008, -0/+0I have Only PSP.
This will helpful my Gadget.
