- emehrkay, on 10/18/2007, -22/+102I thought rumble was a last gen feature?
- guardianzero, on 10/10/2007, -15/+80FOr all your complaining 260ers and PS3ers and Wiiers The last time sony was going to release an ergonomic controller it was ridiculed as looking like a baterrang despite the facts and diagrams that showed it would fit perfectly in your hands.
- SeBBBe, on 10/10/2007, -4/+56It's _NOT_ confirmed.
- AnteChronos, on 10/24/2007, -31/+74"PS controller has the ergonomics of a pine cone."
I have to disagree. I prefer the PS controller over all other controllers. It feels much more comfortable. For me, the big factors are the buttons and d-pad. The Xbox buttons are, in my opinion, horrible. They're tiny and much too convex. The PS buttons have a larger surface area, and the surface is almost flat, which makes them easier to hit, and less painful on the thumb over long periods. My other complaint is the d-pad. The Xbox had the dammed circular d-pad that started on the Genesis, and makes it almost impossible for me to hit a particular direction with any regular accuracy in a fighting game. For instance, shifting my grip changes the direction I perceive as "down" very slightly. The PS controller makes it much easier to feel what the controller *expects* as "down", while simultaneously making it less likely that I'll hit a diagonal by accident.
Of course, this is all a matter of opinion, but it seems to be an opinion that quite a few people share. - ButchersBoy, on 10/10/2007, -76/+115PS controller has the ergonomics of a pine cone. The design has barely updated since PS1 and is a major dissappointment. It is so uncomfortable it's hard to believe you are playing the most powerful of the new-gen machines. When compared to the beleagured GC controller, which if you never held one, fits your hand like a glove, the PS controller is quite simply unsatisfactory. The 360 controller is far superior, feeling a lot more natural. I can't believe Sony are still peddling this *****. For all the 360/PS3, and Wii debate I think the controller should play a bigger part in the discussion, and here's my point of view: Dualshock 3 won't mean sh!t. The PS controller was uninspirational for the PS1; it was quite simply a rip off of the SNES controller with more buttons added. And now on the 3rd generation it's inexcusable. ***** cell chips, XBox Live, Wiimotes, 1080p...one thing is for sure: the only thing the PS3 gives you for a dead cert is RSI.
- Sirocco, on 10/10/2007, -4/+35I will admit that despite my lack of love for the PS controller it has a damn fine D-pad compared to the travesties that grace the Dreamcast, Gamecube, and Xbox controllers.
- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -3/+34They could've kept the boomerang. I saw some pics of that with somebody holding it and it looked perfect. It's a shame loud mouth idiots on the internet get the final say.
- rivalius13, on 10/10/2007, -3/+32This is next gen rumble!
- AnteChronos, on 10/10/2007, -8/+30How do you define "out of date"? Both the Xbox controller and the DualShock use the diamond-arrangement of buttons that originated on the SNES. Is *that* "out of date"?
To me, the DualShock is the most comfortable of the standard console controllers. It has a d-pad where the directions are separated rather than the circular d-pad like the Xbox. I never liked the circular d-pad on the Genesis, and I still don't like it on the Xbox. I also prefer the DualShock's shoulder buttons over those on the Xbox controller. Also, the face buttons on the Xbox controller feel too small, and protrude too much, making them a bit uncomfortable to use.
Still, that's just my opinion, and if you prefer the Xbox controller, that's fine. But don't claim that the DualShock is out of date, when both it and the Xbox controller are using the SNES button layout. - Sirocco, on 10/24/2007, -27/+49You'll be dugg down into oblivion, but you're absolutely correct. The analog placement was a total kludge and it's shameful to have ignored a much needed update for multiple generations. Unlike the 360 and GC controllers that have attempted to become ergonomic and reasonable in their stick/button placement Sony's controller looks like a relic from 1995 -- because it is.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23It actually has. But I don't see what the problem is. The PS3 probably works 12 - 15 hours on a charge. If the dualshock 3 even lasts half that, It'd still be satisfactory...not like you have to buy batteries for it.
- strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22Stop using alkaline batteries in your gadgets. Seriously. Invest in an $20 set of decent rechargeables and you'll save a ton of money.
- ZenMojo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17It worked for them THIS time. Most people told them to ***** themselves from 1997-2006.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21There are no rumble motors in the existing SIXAXIS controllers. Get out your wallet.
- BattleScars, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Replace 'PS3' with 'My biased and uninformed opinion' and you're on the right track
- maley, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18So you can then flame Sony for copying the MS controller setup *eyes roll*
- rcomegys, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Hey, you can buy a rechargeable battery pack for the 360 controller for about that... how thoughtful of MS to offer that option. Still, I gotta say i prefer Sony's inclusion of an internal battery, and yet MS would call this "forcing technology on consumers."
- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14You won the award for 'Most Retarded Person in this Entire Thread'.
- baseman16, on 10/10/2007, -7/+19The reason I love the PS3 controller so much is because the d-pad/left analog stick have remained where they are. The controller's design has stood the test of time and I, for one would be upset if it changed.
- Jolva, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14The triggers *are* pressure sensitive.
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11besides, out-of-date != poorly designed.
- lickmygiggle, on 10/10/2007, -33/+44***** no. I absolutely abhor the xbox controller. The dualshock is a much more natural positioning.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Tr0tsky:
The Wii manual SPECIFICALLY says not to use rechargeable batteries in the Wiimote. So I have honored their wishes... until now. I actually went out and bought some rechargeable batteries for my Wiimote yesterday and charged them up last night. When these batteries run out this time (which will be today by my estimates), the rechargeables will go in.
Why don't I remove them when I'm not playing? I shouldn't have to. The Wiimote is a criminally bad design. Nintendo should be ashamed, and they should apologize for printing in the manual "don't use rechargeable batteries" when this device is an environmental disaster if you don't.
I used to have rechargeable AAs a long time ago, but I just ran out of devices that use them. I went through less than 1 8-pack of AAs in the 4 years before I got the Wii (replacing batteries in a TV or stereo remote once a year or so). Since I got the Wii, I've used 14 AAs. In 9 months.
Anyway, you're getting off track here. The point put out was that putting in rumble wouldn't hurt the battery life on the SIXAXIS Type R and used the Wiimote battery life as an example. But it was a poor example, regardless of what kind of batteries you use, the Wiimote battery life is provably poor, worse than SIXAXIS or the 360 controller's battery lives. - r3m1x, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16"The 360 controller is far superior, feeling a lot more natural."
For playing FPSs, arcade racing games, and sports games. The PS controller's format hasn't changed since the Dualshock 1 which I consider to be good and bad. Asking for a total restart and revision of the button format on the DualShock is like trying to reinvent PC gaming with a totally different controller. It's become such a staple for Sony that introducing anything outside of what everyone is used to would be laughed at. We're seeing this with SIXAXIS, no one likes it, everytime something gets mapped to the controller's waggle gets bumped back to the sticks.
I welcome this new controller but like my Wiimote, I'll turn off the rumble feature to conserve battery. Thanks Immersion for giving Sony their rumble back, I just don't see myself getting too ecstatic over Sony's SIXAXIS rumbling. - samdu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Yes.
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11@emehrkay Last gen or not; gamers want it and Sony is listening. As a PS3 owner I've been blown away at how Sony has responded to customer feedback on the system. There isn't a month that goes by where they don't add some new feature to the PS3.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10SIXAXIS Type R
- vhold, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11The gamecube controller was the only one to ever give me hand cramps. That thing was wrong in so many ways. They were trying to make an easy to use controller but maintain something resembling cross-platform compatibility and ended up making a total mess. The only game that ever felt just right with that thing was smash brothers.
- Durrok, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Of course. My hentai games just have not been the same without it.
- vhold, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11The 360 controller feels better for driving games and shooters, but I like the PS2/PS3 controller more for nearly everything else, especially games like Devil May Cry / God of War.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12What? I go through a set of batteries (alkalines) for each game I play on Wii. I had to replace my Wiimote batteries before I started playing Metroid Prime 3 (because it uses up batteries in the Wiimote, even if you don't turn the Wii on at all), and I just got to the Pirate Homeworld and the set of batteries I am using is just about dead (in the red).
- BobsYourUncle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Yes. Obviously.
- username9000, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13We are talking about the controller itself Beowolf, not how the controller is implemented into gameplay.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9It was the first PS3 game that didn't give you a choice, and judging by the reviews/sales, it'll probably be the last.
- Tunguska, on 10/10/2007, -6/+15At least this one - with the rumble feature - isn't misleading in name.
- smergs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8VMU was great for a few things. Like choosing your play in a football game so that your buddy next to you had no idea what you chose. I can't believe how stupid the EA games are about the way you choose plays now. It's pretty easy to see what your buddy is going to do next.
- TangentThought, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12For all the idiots making the comment: "OMG. IT'S A LAST GEN FEATURE."
Did you honestly think that they're saying with the purpose of saying that it's last gen, or saying that with the purpose of covering their ass while still in the Immersion lawsuit? Seriously... shut up. - YouRookies, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9360 controllers have a horrible D-Pad. You can forget about playing fighting games with a 360 pad. And don't tell us to get an over priced joystick, there are plenty of high level gamers that only use pads.
- tr0tsky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Scrappy, why wouldn't you a) buy rechargeable batteries or b) take a battery out while you're not playing. My batteries last forever, and they're rechargable...
- CLShortFuse, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Confirmed by rumors/word of mouth!!! Burried as inaccurate. When Sony official announces it, I'll digg that story. For a couple of months now, hundreds of editors have been saying the rumble is coming. That doesn't mean it's confirmed.
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Warhawk & Ninja Gaiden Sigma too :)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9If it was just rumbling, it'd be ho-hum. But it's not. They're adding new tech called touchsense which is rumble with force feedback (i.e. buttons/sticks/triggers will variably resist you). It's far superior than the crap technology that matches your girlfriend's vibrator.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6*in response to doshindude*
What the hell? The GC controller looked like a Chinese puzzle when you first looked at it. It was like they just randomely stuck buttons to it wherever they felt like it. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"I notice you left of Lair. Why is that?"
Oh, I see what you did there. The OP requested a list of GOOD games. Let's not mention stinkers in the PS3 or the 360's lineup, shall we? - xOpifex, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I think the battery life will be fine, since I remember reading somewhere that these have been around for a while, but Sony has been waiting to release them because they wanted to get a good battery life in.
- dracflamloc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I loved it except it needed a right-thumb analog stick.
- goldenhearted, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7SixAxisShock
- Foxhound1979, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I was getting used to not having Rumble playing my PS3 games but this is a welcomed addition as it will enhance the gameplay experience.
- MouseCircus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9The Game Cube controller was perfect if you had the right hands for it. And lots of people always bitch about the button shapes/layout, but I thought it was ideal. Nintendo made the buttons oddly shaped in order to make it easier for casual/non-gamers to remember the button layout. Maybe I'm the minority here, but I found that their idea worked extremely well. From day one with my Game Cube, I felt 100% comfortable.
The PlayStation controller used to be my favorite in terms of ergonomics, but that quickly changed after I gave the Game Cube and 360 controllers a try. Isn't there a word for something you perceive to be good, but only because you're used to it or haven't tried something new? Well that's how my experience with the PlayStation controller went. Long play sessions on my PS2 kill my fingers.
As far as the current generation of consoles goes, my favorite controller would have to be the 360 controller. The d-pad does suck, but I haven't played many games where you need to constantly use the d-pad. I can't provide input on the Wii controller as I haven't purchased one yet. - rcomegys, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6They were in a legal battle over the technology, couldn't discuss the case, and that was what the Sony PR people came up with. What else could they have said?
This has been talked about many times before. Please move on. -
