Please link to the original press release not a blog entry with 2 paragraphs. - sinizuh, on 11/14/2007, -2/+39PS3 is starting to become an excellent piece of home theater equipment. It might be time to replace my modded original xbox as my HTPC.
- Abno, on 11/14/2007, -6/+39Pornstation 3.
- jacksons98, on 11/14/2007, -0/+20Every update the PS3 gets better and better. It's amazing how far PS3 has come in less than a year. Really looking forward to this.
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -4/+24Awesome!
- damndj, on 11/14/2007, -1/+20This is great! No more converting files to a playable format. Can we get VLC for the PS3?
- Krakn3Dfx, on 11/14/2007, -0/+19This is awesome! Been using my XBox 1 to stream DiVX stuff over the LAN, now I'll just use the PS3 for it.
Great news! - inactive, on 11/14/2007, -0/+19it would be even more awesome if sony does it on the PSP too. then it would be the best media player ever made.
- catalysis, on 11/14/2007, -0/+16That's not true at all. Look at portable DVD players. DVD-R and Divx support are key features of the better ones.
- LeftE, on 11/14/2007, -0/+15...like play high-definition movies or games?
I won't disagree that XBMC is an awesome hack, but let's be realistic about comparisons. XBMC doesn't do high-def (at least not without significant chugging), nor does it play the latest games, or many other things the PS3 or 360 can do. So sure, it can play VOBs and ISOs, but that's about all. Welcome to the age of 1080p, friend. - cash0utcurse, on 11/14/2007, -2/+17fanboy. most people who bought a ps3 know what divx is.
- Lain1k, on 11/14/2007, -5/+20Lets hope MS steps up to the plate too. One thing I have enjoyed with the Xbox is the easy streaming. But if not then this is a very persuasive move for me to buy a PS3. Lets see when they roll it out (any chance before or around Xmas?)
- aspec, on 11/14/2007, -0/+14Sure. Thing runs linux well enough.
- kyrre, on 11/14/2007, -0/+14Link please?
- coasterswim, on 11/14/2007, -1/+14Blogspam vs. Digg Self-advertising... this is a tough one.
- VictoryGin, on 11/14/2007, -0/+13ah, so it will be XBox360 "playing catch up" ?
- sexybobo, on 11/14/2007, -0/+12DivX and XviD are interchange able for the most part.
- sexybobo, on 11/14/2007, -0/+12DivX = XviD
I have never come across a XviD file I cant play with the DivX codec. - supafuzz, on 11/14/2007, -1/+12Why pay money for another player that only does two things that the PS3 already does?
- DoubleV, on 11/14/2007, -0/+11Xbox 360 - Halo 3, Mass Effect, BioShock
PS3 - Uncharted, Haze, Ratchet & Clank Future, and Porn
Porn always win - naffets, on 11/14/2007, -1/+11Mmm this is good news, closer and closer to switching my pc off more often now.
Here's hoping 360 gets divx support too, simply to even things out a bit - Personally I have both consoles so don't care too much, but in any case it'd be nice for both consoles to have divx support, as its an awesome thing to have. - inactive, on 11/13/2007, -0/+10i think so as divx players also play xvid
- bcorder, on 11/14/2007, -0/+9Sweet, now one more reason to buy a PS3 for my blueray player instead of standalone…
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -0/+9but your joystick is too small to support sixaxis.
- jacksons98, on 11/14/2007, -0/+9@MaIDON You might be right, but since I already own one this is great news.
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -0/+9And those DVD players won't play the format off USB, download it themselves from a web browser, or store them on an internal hard drive.
- grat2001, on 11/14/2007, -0/+8COD4!
- CReyes4182, on 11/13/2007, -2/+10Sweet! I didn't think this would happen since lots of pirated stuff is in Divx but its good to see that its finally coming out.
- slaystench, on 11/14/2007, -0/+8I would say 9 times out of 10 xvid files will be playable with divx support.
- rullingen, on 11/14/2007, -4/+12Waiting for the XXXBoX 360
- whateverHeSaid, on 11/13/2007, -0/+8I think it's time to stop responding to any "PS3 has no good games" posts. Just digg them down for their ignorance and denial.
- NinjaBoy, on 11/14/2007, -1/+9But you can stream to it unlike the DVD player.
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -1/+9It's *been* an excellent piece of home theater equipment! Where have you been?
Only difference is, up till now, you had to install Linux and use that to play/stream your files from your fileshare/media server.
People are just too busy being stupid and arguing over who's better. - exomni, on 11/14/2007, -1/+8That's awesome. I wish Microsoft would get off their fat asses and finally give in to DivX.
- jacksons98, on 11/14/2007, -0/+7Warhawk! The most fun I've had online this year.
- jcaino, on 11/14/2007, -0/+7i assume it would already had supported it if you had linux installed? adding it to the firmware is nice though - given the capabilities of this processor, i imagine we will see lots rolled out for the ps3 over time. although, even if all the new features, etc, continue to be added to existing consoles, that was still one helluva steep entry price some moons ago....
- xboxing, on 11/14/2007, -0/+7The PS3 already does support H.264, yes.
- mooninite, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6Since the PS3 is a Blu-ray movie player........... Uh, YES it does play H.264.
- cromptonenator, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6This isn't spam, but once they release the DivX enabling update, I strongly advise stage6.divx.com for those who want to watch or download divx movies straight off their PS3 browser.
- xboxing, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6Every new feature they add to the PS3 adds to its overall worth... built-in Divx support is HUGE. And though it may be a pirates favorite codec, there are plenty of legal DVD owning folk out there like myself that use HandBrake to rip their DVDs to Divx for easy access. This is a win/win for Sony and Divx because if big players support Divx like Sony, it adds to their credibility as a mainstream codec more companies should have been taking seriously for a long while now.
And screw the "there's no good games". I just finished Ratchet, after finishing Heavenly Sword after finishing Resistance after playing Warhawk for months, now I'm playing CoD4 after which I'll be playing Assasin's Creed after which I'll be playing Uncharted... who has time for any more great games?! And don't get me started about UT3 :B Any more and I'll need to quit my job. - JayD16, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6Just use remote play and your wish is granted.
- rudy23, on 11/14/2007, -2/+8Taboo - charming mothers 3 here I come
- sinizuh, on 11/14/2007, -1/+7And I forgot to mention, with divx support, we might be able to see support for stage6 for PS3 just around the corner (i don't see why not). That would be just icing on this delicious cake.
- SirDiggalot, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6The new Rachet and Clank is freakin' awesome. More to come.
- AtomicTank, on 11/13/2007, -1/+7Indeed, now just add 16:10 aspect ratio support and I'll be a happy camper.
- MarrowMan, on 11/14/2007, -1/+7Your mom cares
- Flinty, on 11/14/2007, -4/+10Are you sure? Last I heard DivX were only in talks with MS.
- coollettuce, on 11/13/2007, -0/+5Here's what I don't understand, if companies add support for proprietary codecs like divx, mp3, aac, why can't they also add free ones suck as ogg, flac, mkv and others. The free ones are the easiest to add, no worrying about violating copyrights and so forth.
