Devil May Cry 4 Opening Cinematic is Very Cinematic Indeed watch!
joystiq.com — We've been impressed by the footage we've seen of Capcom's newest demon slaughtering simulator, Devil May Cry 4. It has all the elements we've come to expect from the DMC series: acrobatics, dismemberment, and extreme cases of early-onset leukotrichia.

- CaptZomborg, on 12/31/2007, -1/+1my thoughts exactly. That was one of the worst cinematic for a AAA title I've ever seen.
- fusuke31, on 12/31/2007, -13/+30Why do Japanese game productions always look so 'juvenile' ?
- urbandistrict, on 12/31/2007, -5/+5Because you haven't been hired as their Creative Director it seems. My critique would be (from the portion I saw) that they would have done a better job with texturing. I lost interest less than half way through.
- cfuse, on 12/31/2007, -3/+3Never mind juvenile, try confusing.
Not knowing anything about the game, here's my take on what this movie is telling me: A cosplayer with a broken arm races against time and deformed jester hats with knives to make it to his transsexual girlfriend's opera recital before a group of men in grey burkas. - Neem, on 12/31/2007, -0/+5Has to be a cultural thing ... I agree, all their characters look like Keira Knightley when she was trying to pass herself as a man in Pirates.
- cwmonkey, on 12/31/2007, -4/+42That guy had a really pretty voice.
- dvdt101, on 12/31/2007, -1/+7it's a trap!

- active1x0, on 12/31/2007, -3/+1internet meme!
- nevermind13, on 12/31/2007, -2/+1Yea, and nice cast. In DMC1 Dante takes a huge sword through his chest and it doesn't even bother him. Now we get a cheap cast wearing imitation.
- Alix7, on 12/31/2007, -8/+59To be honest, I wasn't impressed.
- gn0stik, on 12/31/2007, -1/+1I don't know how anyone could be. I saw better cinematics on PS2 games. And this? In-game graphics are that good in Bioshock.
- MCCULLAH, on 12/31/2007, -17/+4wasnt impressed either...is this for PS3?
- INDOAZZ, on 12/31/2007, -19/+4Me neither ! I think there are better games out right now! ASSASSINS CREED
- ronaldmonster, on 12/31/2007, -6/+3Sorry but Assassins Creed only good feature worth noting was the degree it's stuck up it's own ass.

- coheedcollapse, on 12/31/2007, -0/+6Real gameplay (X360 as far as I can tell) for those not enthralled by Rick Astley.

- tallonx, on 12/31/2007, -4/+6It's got an artistic quality to it. I agree, there should be no soul or purpose in an opening. There really should be more heavy metal and blood. BTW, where are the lazers and teh ninjas?
- Urusai, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3Metal is too brutal for tender Japanese ears.
- coheedcollapse, on 12/31/2007, -1/+1Dark, German (from what I could tell), metal has been the basis of some of the main opening sequences and fight scenes from at least the most recent DMC. My guess is someone got a little too artistic and thought it would be an awesome idea to contrast soft, mellow, opera music with Dante kicking ass.
Personally, I haven't seen slow classical work incredibly well during an action sequence outside of a few really really great Final Fantasy fights (Aeris fight, anyone?)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIm4DtmmvSM - stilzchen, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Actually metal is pretty big in Japan, just not in games/anime nerd culture which isn't too surprising.

- Uranium118, on 12/31/2007, -3/+11Why do all Japanese developers make their characters androgyne?
- tbunreal, on 12/31/2007, -1/+9For people like me who didn't know what that was:
androgynous
1. Biology Having both female and male characteristics; hermaphroditic.
2. Being neither distinguishably masculine nor feminine, as in dress, appearance, or behavior. - ericdano, on 12/31/2007, -2/+4or why do they make the women so hot?
- B1663r, on 12/31/2007, -1/+2Oh gross, the anime women are all prepubescent girls!
- ilves7, on 12/31/2007, -1/+4guess that floats ericdano's boat

- tbunreal, on 12/31/2007, -1/+9For people like me who didn't know what that was:
- MalDON, on 12/31/2007, -4/+9From a cinematic point of view, it was seriously lacking. Looks like any old Japanese RPG cutscene.
- CaviMike, on 12/31/2007, -9/+6For Capcom and Sony's sake I hope this is for PS2. If not, they better get their asses moving with those visuals.
- tendonut, on 12/31/2007, -2/+4They are still trying to figure out how the PS3 hardware works.

- ChuckNorris015, on 12/31/2007, -10/+8Very Cinematic? More like Suckamatic.
- kevin32x, on 12/31/2007, -3/+4that word compliments your screen name. retarded.

- kevin32x, on 12/31/2007, -3/+4that word compliments your screen name. retarded.
- coheedcollapse, on 12/31/2007, -3/+3Stupid intro, but that looks more like the title sequence than the actual opening. Devil May Cry has always had some badass fight scene to open up after you get past the actual menu and into the game. I'm sure they won't disappoint.
- Sutanreyu, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2PROLOGUE to the actual intro. It foreshadows what's to come almost immediately after... Which is Dante busting in and pwning the ***** out of the Order of the Sword.
If you look carefully in this video, you can see Dante standing on a building at the top right of the screen @ 3:33. - Malik112099, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2oh! its the prologue! do we have to pay $40 for it?

- NinjaPig, on 12/31/2007, -1/+4I'm a huge fan of DMC(even played both discs of #2). One of the things i noticed in DMC3 were misspellings and the use of the word "loose" instead of "lose." I realize this is nit picky, but its glaring that they completely half assed the english version.
For the love of god Capcom, i don't expect poetry, but at least get a semi-decent translator to do the damn thing, just to pretend that you think that there are some people who will give value to the story line of your games.- Sutanreyu, on 12/31/2007, -2/+3...Translator? The game is made in English by DEFAULT.
- blindmonkey, on 12/31/2007, -7/+9I'm probably gonna get dugg down for this, but I actually thought it was pretty badass.
- balbaid, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2No it's not " cinematic ". It's a great game, nonetheless.
- evanct, on 12/31/2007, -2/+6to be honest it looks kind of pathetic next to the FFXIII versus trailer. they share a similar style.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T70Ok16ykdw- Sutanreyu, on 12/31/2007, -1/+3You do realize that the Versus XIII trailer is not running in real-time, whereas the DMC4 Prologue is?
It would definitely look "pathetic" in that sense. - ineptsavant, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3thanks for the link I hadn't seen that trailer. I hope the whole came keeps the dark melancholy feeling instead of ffxiii, and ffx's super bright tokyopop world. Would be refreshing.
- Sutanreyu, on 12/31/2007, -1/+3You do realize that the Versus XIII trailer is not running in real-time, whereas the DMC4 Prologue is?
- zebraz, on 12/31/2007, -4/+1are those boobs real ?
- cadmiumpaint, on 12/31/2007, -2/+4one of my big pet peeve's in video games is when you get this game home for the first time and you're all excited to play it, and then you have to sit through like 15 minutes of endless movie that you can't skip through. I just want to play the damn game. The more game makers try to make it a cinematic experience the less like a game it is to me.
- Moose_Head, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Mario Galaxy please stand up!
- Antares29, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1You know what really ticked me off? Loading up Crysis all excited to play it and I had to sit through a freaking long ass trailer of the game, showing off the gameplay that I wanted to play, before I was able to play the game. WTF is up with that? "Yeah, ok, I can grab a guy by the throat, but why can't I make this stupid trailer stop playing!"
- wolferz, on 12/31/2007, -6/+0"Slaughtering simulator" please please please please please please PLEASE! Don't use these words together when referring to a game. In fact dont use the word simulator at all when refering to games unless it is a space combat or flight sim. Thompson is already annoying enough and it's looking like Clinton already has one foot in the White House door. No need to feed the flames.
And just because it is slow and set to opera music does not make it cinematic. What it was was drawn out. There are 4 things that can be told from that video. Dante fights demons on his way to the theater/church. Kyrie is singing opera at said theator/church. Kyrie expects Dante to be there. And Dante makes an effort to be there. None of which are mind blowing or even interesting realy and are not worth the 5 minutes of video they are given. Blood, guts, and heavy metal would have been better.
If you want cinematic check out the opening to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Still slow and set to opera (actually classical) music, but there is a lot of information there to be soaked up which manages to keep it interesting and sets the stage for the epic nature of the Discovery's mission.- tendonut, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Lets not forget that Space Odyssey was you know....a movie. I'm pretty sure a film that is being displayed in a cinema should be cinematic.
- everfalling, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1this might be nit-picking, but where's the light source in that alleyway?
at the end, as the bad guys are popping out of existence, the camera looks down the alley toward the church with the sun setting behind it, or a bit to the right of it. but, if you look at the shadow cast by the adjacent building on the right, the light source seems to be coming from the very FAR right. one would think that if the sun is straight ahead (at least ahead enough to glare into the camera that's looking forward) that the angle of the shadow from the building on the right would be steeper, letting more light into the alley.
did i miss something? or did they fudge the light to make the alley dark while keeping the horizon shot all sunny? - piratearggghhh, on 12/31/2007, -0/+10The best cinematic was when Dante ate pizza while slaying creatures - I forget which DMC that was.
- schizogony, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2DMC 3
- ineptsavant, on 12/31/2007, -1/+5guess I'm in the minority here, but I liked it. I'd also venture to say like someone else did earlier that that's the intro when you put the game in, before the menu. The past 3 DMC games have high paced begginings when you start the actual game.
- StanleyKoolPrik, on 12/31/2007, -1/+5***** cinematics. They create a false impression of what the the game will be. The ***** started with FFVIII. It worked there, and it has been off to races since.
- Moose_Head, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2It stared way before then, I remember buying games for my 386 and having them look nothing like the screen caps on the box.
- active1x0, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2Beautiful music can make anything good.
- Murrabbit, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Are they still marketing console games with pre-rendered cinematic cut scenes? How cute! They should keep it up, it'll be retro pretty soon, rather than just pase and embarrassingly antiquated.
- smek2, on 12/31/2007, -2/+1Meh. A bit pretentious. The hero looks like a lady and is wielding a sword bigger than himself one handed.
- Saea, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Cloud?
- jfujita, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1I really wish Japanese game makers could hire someone from the film industry to direct these movie sequences. This one was a very poor effort by capcom. No emotion from the characters, crappy camera movement, editing, and very tedious.
- Saea, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Uh... no.
I've seen more cinematic openings in games five years DMC4's senior. Really now, get it together Capcom, and joystiq. That was just poor rendering also... - ScionX, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Is there a youtube link for those of us behind a proxy?
- ScionX, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2nevermind, found one.

- Wisgary, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Ok, I'm sure everyone who's ever played the DMCs before will have this same question - How does a guy like Dante end up with a cast on his arm? I mean this seriously. Did he fall off his skateboard and break his arm or something? A 20 feet tall one eyed demon punching him right in the face doesn't do it?
/nerd- ScionX, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1That's not Dante, it's Nero.
Where've you been?
- ScionX, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1That's not Dante, it's Nero.
- tendonut, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1When will game developers grow some balls and create cinematics using the actual real-time graphics? What is this, 1998? If Nintendo can do it, anyone can.
And while we are on the topic, when will EA start to show gameplay graphics instead of replays in their Madden commercials? Are people REALLY this stupid to fall for the same trap year after year after year, then have the gall to bitch about it? - rowlodge, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1sniff...
- kurocrow, on 12/31/2007, -1/+1While reading the comments here, I realized the answers to two questions:
Why do Japanese gamemakers make male characters androgynous?
Because they know what the girls like.
Why do Diggers always bitch about male characters being androgynous?
Because they have no idea what girls like.
Bitching about video game characters... it'll make you a hit with the chicks! - NateTheApe21, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1i want to play now
- salserinpelao, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1And let the monsters crash the show?
- rurounikengyrl, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1thought the graphics would be better... =(
- jscnet, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2Nothing new here -- just more violence for vengeance, pussy or some moronic ideal. There's no more creative good story telling. No more integrity of artists, just corp greed. Free yourself from the expense on your pocketbook and consciousness -- get rid of your TV set.

- benjio, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1I don't need to watch this to consider it gay.
- shegs, on 01/01/2008, -0/+0actually that wasnt even that nice looking... I did enjoy the fools comments that were like "OMG spoilers!!!"
when it is probably the opening video that you will most likely want to skip through to make it to the main menu. - andretii, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Final Fantasy had better openings in the 90's
