- gamemaster357, on 02/02/2008, -5/+44imagine if the devs implemented this into killzone 2 or mgs4 and sold it with headtracking glasses bundled with the game. taking cover behind the couch= cover in game! drool worthy software, anyone know who this guy works for?
- Dabisu, on 02/02/2008, -1/+34This looks really great. I'd love to see this in a game for a "true" 3D experience.
- ThetaDot, on 02/02/2008, -1/+29Great work. The fascinating thing about the way this and the Wii sensor bar works is that the concept is so simple in practice. Use the orientations of two dots of IR light and the distance they are away from each other. Brilliant!
- Hallucinogenic, on 02/02/2008, -1/+27My god that's incredible, I want to see what it would look like on a giant screen or one of those sweet curved monitors... or a projector. ***** sweet *****.
- Schrade, on 02/02/2008, -0/+20He works for Sony Santa Monica:
http://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/deve ... - Hallucinogenic, on 02/02/2008, -2/+22What if they made animated movies like this? Different angles every time you watch the movie, you can move around to see things better, even put in easter eggs for people to find...
And don't even get me started about porn.... - aaron5863, on 02/02/2008, -2/+20Awesome work! Making the code available to all developers is even better. Anyone know who this guy is??
- fixty, on 02/02/2008, -5/+23Direct link to the related Wii remote concept page including code:
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/projects/wii/ - thecheatah, on 02/02/2008, -3/+18Lets just bring to linux :-D. (all we need is a good webcam [with linux drivers]) run compiz with this baby. INSANE!!!
- walshan22, on 02/02/2008, -1/+15Bight future with that kind of technology. This is the highlight of my Friday night! I feel sorry for myself...
- NightVortez, on 02/02/2008, -0/+13but you on the other hand are a totally hardcore gangster, right? Posting on ***** digg...
- grumbel, on 02/02/2008, -3/+15What is interesting with the PS3 is that in theory at least, you wouldn't even need glasses. The PS3 has more then enough power to do face tracking and unless I am mistaken they have already demoed face tracking a while ago. So combining it with the 3D effect stuff should give you a pretty nice experience with no need for extra equipment.
- jozb, on 02/02/2008, -1/+12this is what he is referring to when he says you don't need a wii remote. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -1/+12There are 10.49 million PS3s in the hands of consumers at this moment.
- staticneuron, on 02/02/2008, -5/+15Valid question! I don't know why people are digging you down but the answer should be yes. Maybe not as smooth though because the Vision camera is still limited to 30fps while the PSEye can have capture rates between 60 and 120 fps.
- NightVortez, on 02/02/2008, -4/+14Yes it's the mob mentality, and had nothing to do with the fact that you just called the person who created a video creepy, which many find totally insulting, it's just that one guy dugg you down, keep telling yourself this.
- binarymelon, on 02/02/2008, -0/+10I'm fairly certain it can only be done on stuff that is being generated in real time. Technically at some point in the future it may be possible with animated movies.
- AzureRise, on 02/02/2008, -0/+9Lies.
- noblesnail, on 02/02/2008, -2/+11Am I'm the only one who is quite underwhelmed? On the Wii the ir-glasses made sense since the wii remote can only detect (4) ir sources. The ps3 on the other hand has a "real" camera, not limited to the ir-spectrum. So, it should probably be possible to do "real" face-tracking from the raw image data without the ir-filter – ir-glasses workaround. The only problem would be that the application would probably be quite cpu-hungry, but that shouldn't be a problem on the ps3, right?
btw doesn't the ps3 already have a built-in face-tracking algorithm in the slideshow program (always zooms to and from faces). - EtherGnat, on 02/02/2008, -0/+8No, not even close. Think before you post.
- Schrade, on 02/02/2008, -1/+9Dude, he works for Sony (Their Santa Monica studio)
Grow up. - dmac41, on 02/02/2008, -0/+8There's an arcade game that already uses this technology. Its called Police 911, and its been out since 2001.
- lowerlogic, on 02/02/2008, -0/+8Dugg for the randomness in the last 2 seconds, and also because I hope VR stuff like this becomes more popular and starts showing up in more games and becomes as universally supported as controllers, keyboards, and mice.
- fixty, on 02/02/2008, -1/+9I know it would only work for a single person at a time, but it would be flat out amazing if you could use head tracking to watch 3D movies. The player would have to be enhanced to allow the point of view to float in accordance with the head-tracking data, and the DVD (Blu-Ray, HD-DVD etc...) would have to store the movie's 3D data instead of the rasterized (or whatever it's called) flat images they now hold... But whatever. The added degree of immersion would really change the movie experience.
Maybe if games are made using this technology, which seems inevitable, and movies are eventually released using it too, there's no reason not to blend the two genres to some extent - adding some degree of interactivity to films. I know this isn't really an original thought, but it's the first time I've seen something that made me think it could actually happen. - dansmeek, on 02/02/2008, -8/+16it works like this. whoever viewed your comment first either liked it, or didn't.. if he liked it... you'd to go +2. then the digg mob would digg you up to +20 in minutes.
if he votes you down though, you go to +0 diggs. and then you get buried by the mob. this is why the first few comments always have the highest amounts of diggs or buries. - inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+7Not really. They are pretty much the same.
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+7There are 10.49 million PS3 owners.
- Schrade, on 02/02/2008, -0/+7He works for Sony :-P
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+7"This idea is not exactly original. "
Which if you watched the video, you'd know he admitted that
"It was done with that program using a wiimote and a sensor bar instead of the glasses"
It was also done using IR glasses on a wiimote just like this. And, it's also been done years ago. This was not done for the first time using Wii tech. - grumbel, on 02/02/2008, -0/+6There is nothing to sell, because the underlying stuff is pretty simple, everybody could implement that stuff himself on a weekend or two.
- chrgrose, on 02/02/2008, -0/+6You know I'm not the most technologically up to date guy on the planet, but I gotta say: This technology is absolutely ***** amazing.......................God I wish I could play unreal tournament our COD4 with this.
- rentmitchum, on 02/02/2008, -1/+7I want to be taking cover in COD5 and be able to lean my head or my head and weapon out of the corner using this.. YES! Sorta like GRAW.
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+6Sony fanboy? God you fanboys are retarded. He's a Sony employee.
- notoneofus, on 02/02/2008, -0/+6It's not stealing when he credits the guy for the idea.
- EtherGnat, on 02/02/2008, -0/+6Wrong. They're using the 1MP camera in the Wiimote to do the tracking in the Wii demo.
- ddrstreak, on 02/02/2008, -0/+6Reading through the comments is making me crave some Doublemint gum.
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+6You're an idiot.
- Snakedal337, on 02/02/2008, -1/+7Yeah he did it first, very impressive.
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+6The Wii guy didn't invent it.
- DarkShroud, on 02/02/2008, -1/+7Not nearly as good at sucking as your mother, though a lot more expensive. $500 vs $5.
- ddrstreak, on 02/02/2008, -0/+5Interesting that Singularitarian said the same thing almost an hour ago...
- masterm1nd, on 02/02/2008, -0/+5I'm on an imax 3d right now.
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+51) PS3 runs linux
2) PS3s web browser runs both flash and java applets
3) Home also runs java applets
4) Unreal supports user mods
And java is pretty much the same as XNA since both run within virtual machines. - a1532b, on 02/02/2008, -2/+7Maybe it's just because Lost started back up yesterday, but I thought he looked an aweful lot like Hurley...
- DarkShroud, on 02/02/2008, -0/+4Wow a Wiimote connected to a laptop. Wow a PS3 eyetoy connected to a PS3 with actual working software.
- theaceoffire, on 02/02/2008, -0/+4Hey, there is an even better option!
Imagine each screen being oriented to a different user, making screen peaking less easy.... Splitscreen would be so much cooler. - inactive, on 02/02/2008, -5/+9Except for the code fixty posted doesn't run on a Wii.
The code this developer posted, runs on PS3s, and ALL developers have access to the code
This is not more convoluted than fixty's example, and you're a retarded fanboy for claiming so. - Diggtatorship, on 02/02/2008, -5/+9The funny thing is that this guy has gone and basically re-invented the wheel to make the eyetoy behave like the Wii remote, then he had to build the PS3 software to process the image and extract coordinates from the points of IR light.
The Wii remote does all this internally and spits out sets of coordinates without the need for external image processing, so while he has managed to make this work on the PS3 (and major props to him for doing it) it's still a big convoluted system when compared to the simplicity of the Wii remote. - smergs, on 02/02/2008, -0/+4That is awesome. I only have a 360 right now and I've never been against buying a ps3 anyway, but if they release a game using something like this on the ps3 then I will buy one that day!
I'd love to buy this guy a beer! - inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+4I dugg him down for stating the obvious. The video said the developer network for developers. Duh.
