- lanky22, on 07/12/2009, -11/+95PS3 is the best blu-ray player I own
- Konrad9, on 07/12/2009, -18/+94Sony let their success get to their head. They absolutely deserve huge amounts of praise for the PS2, it probably made them bucketloads of money.
These days? Eeeeeh... the PS3 is a fantastic machine and I'd love to get one, but $400? For a console? No thanks, I don't care what it does, that's just too much money. I don't care that it comes with games, I don't want those games, I want to spend $300 and choose games.
Edit: "But why is the rumble gone!?" - viper001, on 07/12/2009, -23/+96I grew up playing Sony consoles, and some of my favorite games of all time were on them (FF7/8, Symphony of the Night, Chrono Cross, Ico, etc). When the PS3 was being hyped up around early 2005, I was absolutely certain I would be buying one on launch... then came E3 2006. Their arrogance reminded me of pre-Gamecube Nintendo, and really turned me off from the console (not to mention the astronomical price). Still, there were so many things they could have done right. Launching at 499US and with an FF7 remake (not that tech demo they jerked us around with) would have been an initial loss, but a platform to build success upon. Too little too late now, in my case. I'm a PC gamer, and haven't looked back since.
- MrFisty, on 07/12/2009, -7/+78I had to check the date on this article to make sure it wasn't an old story from a few years ago. Yes, 2006 was disastrous, but in all fairness the last couple of years have been a marked improvement.
What it boils down to is 360 hit shelves first and Sony made a series of terrible gaffs in an effort to obnoxiously plow their way through and keep their position that the PS2 elevated them to. Of course, it went the complete other way and now they're playing catch up as developers try to recoup as much of their growing costs by releasing former exclusives cross platform.
The biggest issue for Sony is realising that the bulk of Joe Consumers out there see a PS3 and a 360 as largely the same thing despite the differences a more tech savvy crew like Digg know all about. Most consumers wouldn't even know what E3 is let alone what Sony said there. The big difference consumers see is that the 360 is cheaper and has that Halo game they've heard about. In other words, and it's been demonstrated a hundred times on these threads, is that a price drop will make a world of difference.
But at the end of the day it goes to show, technology is one thing, bad PR is quite something else. - wampalord, on 07/12/2009, -7/+72599 US Dollars!
RIIIIIIIDGE RACER! - soccerman90, on 07/12/2009, -15/+76these comments suck
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -5/+57PS3 is the only bluray player I own and I don't own a single bluray movie.
- deaftly, on 07/12/2009, -1/+51Makes me feel old when people say they grew up playing Sony consoles :(
- abelpc, on 07/13/2009, -3/+50The sad part is that Microsoft has been able to hold off the PS3 with an obviously flawed console system. What would have happened to Sony if Microsoft hadn't had the hardware issues plaguing the 360?
Sony's handling of the PS3 has been mind boggling to me.. I do not regret buying my systems but the Playstation Heads need to ease up with the rhetoric. - annihilator675, on 07/12/2009, -11/+54CALL IN THE NEXT 20 MINUTES AND RECEIVE A GIANT ENEMY CRAB, ABSOLUTELY FREE!!!
- deaftly, on 07/12/2009, -5/+46PS3 is the only bluray player I own
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -17/+55Their last update totally ***** up the Internet Browser.
It's pretty much useless now for ***** like YouTube. Frame rate is now terrible and even locks up the system.
It worked JUST FINE before, too. - styx31989, on 07/12/2009, -4/+39Am I the only one that read that in Jack Sparrow's voice?
- philbart999, on 07/12/2009, -31/+65Nice article Jim, well done.
- Wendyoh, on 07/12/2009, -6/+32If a criminal psychologist knows so much about serial killers, why aren't they all Ted Bundy or John Wayne Gacy?
This logic is so effin' stupid. Not to mention, Jim never said, "I know the intricacies of how to do business better than Sony". He's saying that if they stopped flapping lip so much and instead concentrated ON business, perhaps they'd actually BE the "industry leader" rather than Kaz Hirai plugging his ears, singing "LA LA LA LA" and pretending Sony is the industry leader. - rainbowblack, on 07/12/2009, -6/+29"ranting about things sony said years and years ago"
its those years and years of ranting that got us to this point,
but then again, we've been telling sony to STFU for years and years - inactive, on 07/12/2009, -9/+31Nintendo still does the same *****.
Look at the Wii. It's 2.5 years old and has a handful of epic games. They're banking on "our system's hype will make it succeed, we don't need good games! Simple minded party games are enough for anyone!"
Irritating as hell. Not to mention all of them doing their online store nickel & dime ripoffs. $10 for maps? Since when is charging for MAPS acceptable?!
PC gaming is looking like the way to go.. - Hellicus, on 07/13/2009, -2/+23GIANT ENEMY CRABS !!
- nilhilustfreder, on 07/13/2009, -4/+25Dugg for "metric *****-ton." I thought I was the only one who said that.
- robertisaar, on 07/12/2009, -1/+21uhhhh, double post, but with different usernames?
- zwaldowski, on 07/12/2009, -9/+29In the modern world, be a frugal shopper. I'm not excusing Sony for the PS3's price, but it's not all that different any more to get a 360 with the same features ($99 WiFi, LIVE, etc.). Hell, don't even look at video games. An iPod is in the $299 range for a good-sized (GB-wise) system. Look on Craigslist, look on eBay. Games as a whole (while not by much) are cheaper for the PS3. Buy.
I just bought a PS3 and will sell my Xbox as soon as Microsoft decides to get off their ass and send it back to me. In the meantime, I'm enjoying fun games. Really fun games. - inactive, on 07/12/2009, -5/+24LOL, how do I get dugg down for that?
Go load up youtube on your PS3 and see how choppy the video now is compared to your PC :) - jigga, on 07/13/2009, -3/+21Right, because the editors of the site and the IT staff are one-in-the-same
- frieddonuts, on 07/13/2009, -11/+29Honestly, I am very tired of hearing the same arguments about the downfall of the Playstation brand. The PS3's problem is indeed its price, but not in its lack of value for that price. Looking at the raw hardware and services provided, the PS3 has value that place it on roughly equal footing as the XBox. It has included wifi, is the most advanced, fully-supported Blu-ray player on the market, an in-case power supply, free membership in the PSN (XBox live gold really adds up over time), and the expandability options are much more advanced than the 360's, with a standard laptop drive tray instead of a proprietary drive, and even the ability to install linux (though obviously not many people use this feature).
Sony ***** up because they introduced a premium product at the worst possible time. Entertainment is always the first area that consumers tighten their belts during hard economic times. They also created a very novel and inaccessible SDK that turned off all of the 3rd party software makers and basically destroyed all of the software exclusives that they had obtained during the PS2 era. - deaftly, on 07/12/2009, -13/+30I guess destructoid needed some ad revenue from the fanboys
- lorddazzer, on 07/13/2009, -6/+22Hmmm RE: Activision
What Activision did was basically try and blackmail Sony into a price cut.
The 2 choices Sony could do was :
- try to please Activision, and end up looking like their bitch.
- tell Activision to piss off, as a sign of company strength.
So guess which one they chose? - MorphineJim, on 07/13/2009, -2/+16Some people are going to have to get used to the fact that Destructoid is successful and here to stay whether they like it or not.
- Forumgod, on 07/12/2009, -2/+16Oh, so losing money is irrelevant?
- Traiklin, on 07/12/2009, -4/+17the only drawback to PC is they make it for the 360 first then try to optimize it for the PC or just don't bother with it at all.
- deaftly, on 07/12/2009, -3/+16MASSIVE SAVINGS!
- worldgate989, on 07/13/2009, -7/+20You messed up in that.
- try to please Activision, and end up looking like their bitch.
- tell Activision to piss off, appear as a sign of company strength while looking like douches who dont see their failure. - dinglebutt, on 07/12/2009, -19/+31In during the Sony Defense Force's mass-burial.
- crossmr, on 07/13/2009, -2/+14that is only if you see a Blu-ray player as a bonus. If you don't, you've got a gaming console with an artificially high price.
I could release a Wii with home enema machine attached to it and jack the price up only $200 more. Hell of a deal right? Who doesn't love a home enema? Especially one controlled by a wii-mote without motion plus..
But too expensive for a wii.
Sony ***** up because they're trying to justify the higher price with a feature gamers don't necessarily need. I couldn't give 2 ***** about blueray movies and wouldn't pay an extra $100 or $200 for some feature I don't need. - deweyhewson, on 07/12/2009, -8/+20That's not a drawback of PCs, it's a drawback of the casualization of gaming and developers focusing on the easy cash of console gamers over the more enthusiast PC crowd.
- Spire3660, on 07/12/2009, -9/+21He may be a decent writer, but his reasoning skills need some work. He took the 10 year cycle thing way too literally and narrow. If he had bothered to even think about what is STILL going on with the PS2, he would realize how stupid he sounds.
- MrHawkins, on 07/13/2009, -1/+12How is that inaccurate?
- Konrad9, on 07/13/2009, -3/+14"I don't care that it comes with games, I don't want those games, I want to spend $300 and choose games. "
- AzzX, on 07/13/2009, -9/+20Excellent article!
Sony lost me with the Lik Sang fiasco many moons ago.
They will never change. - NewBrunswickMan, on 07/13/2009, -7/+18the xbox started at 399.99, the ps3 started at almost $700.
also everything needed for online comes with the xbox, you only pay an extra hundred for the 80GB hardrive.
even then i've been using my 20GB hardrive for years and still have 10GB left.
and while on topic, xbox live has amazing online that the other 2 just can't live up too. except for maybe the wii with it's huge quantity of old favorites - kinseyincanada, on 07/13/2009, -2/+13buy you dont need WiFi and you dont need LIve, bottom line you can go out and spend 200 and be able to play all the AAA games in HHD.
- AmazingSteve, on 07/13/2009, -3/+13Care to explain that nugget of wisdom? I think the numbers speak for themselves and let's face it, no more Call of Duty on PS3 means big trouble in of itself.
- themastersb, on 07/13/2009, -2/+12Maybe your e-penis which will never amount to anything.
- doomestic, on 07/12/2009, -9/+19Welcome... to the real world.
- CoD4, on 07/13/2009, -9/+18Looks like people will bitch no matter what
Here's 80gb ps3 with dualshock 3 + Metal Gear + Killzone for $400
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9401 ... - therealkid, on 09/10/2009, -3/+12You really think Activision would bottom out if Sony dropped them? When there are still plenty of other consoles for Activision to cater to? Really?! I do believe the article described you in those last few paragraphs, buddy. Get over your system. It's not as cool as you think it is.
- sneezefart, on 07/13/2009, -2/+11@frieddonuts. Blu-ray would mean something if PS3 games got higher resolution textures or something that wasn't on the Xbox or PC versions...to me it just means more expensive movies.
- rwallen, on 07/13/2009, -3/+12Don't feel old, you're probably still under 30. The people who grew up on sony consoles are probably still in high school.
- Timmyftw, on 07/13/2009, -6/+15The fanboys are out in disguise today. Last 4 comments reek of it.
- NeoTechni, on 07/12/2009, -0/+9MS and Nintendo paid Immersion off
- insidius, on 07/13/2009, -12/+21I think the funniest part is this from the sony fanboys:
ITS MORE EXPENSIVE CAUSE YOU HAVE A SMALLER HDD AND HAVE TO BUY A WIFI DONGLE!11onNE!
I dont want a bigger HDD and I could care less for WIFI when I am gaming and streaming media to my loungeroom. Its why I have a gigabit network for my consoles and PC and wireless for the notebooks.
Therefor its not more expensive b ecause they are components I never wanted in the first place so I actually save money. I actually wrote an interesting article on this and I swear its not spam:
http://snatchbot.net/2009/01/11/game-wars-the-cons ...
Stop trying to justify the money you spent with accessories that SHOULD be optional. I just want to play games and the 360 does that without its fancy wireless dongles and extra HDD space.
Sorry for the spelling by the way, the digg comment box was jumping up and down and I cant read anything I am writing. Its annoying as sin. -
