- jpdbaugh, on 10/13/2009, -3/+61Demon's Souls is the first game that I have truly enjoyed in nearly a decade. It is a gamers game and by that I mean it requires thinking, strategy, and skill. It captures something that I haven't had from games in so long. It makes me think of playing games like Zelda 64, Perfect Dark, or Vagrant Story. Everyone who is jaded by modern games should check this gem out.
- woodman445, on 10/14/2009, -1/+24You want to know how hard this game is? I live in Winnipeg and you cannot find a copy of this gawdamned game anywhere. So not only will it kick my ass, but I have to hunt it down in ORDER for it to kick my ass.
- b1m2x3, on 10/14/2009, -2/+24I LOVE THIS GAME.
there. i said it. - Nyaasee, on 10/14/2009, -1/+17I'm playing this game and it's great. It's not one that you can breeze through easily. Often I have to move forward with my shield raised because of the nearly undetectable ambushes that lie in wait or hiding like a bitch from mindflayers in 3-1 that can one-shot my character (it's a great death to watch btw). I find myself really paying attention rather than mindlessly button-mashing overkill on hordes of crap AI. The AI in Demon's souls fight skillfully, leaving me to feel like i'm facing off against a live player sometimes.
The game is a bit linear but in a good way b/c you get that sense of accomplishment from surviving one gauntlet to the next. For me, the real punishing moment so far has been my unprepared encounter with the Tower Knight. That fight begins with a pucker factor of 10. This is a must have for the PS3. [Sticky White Stuff] - Mortiferous, on 10/14/2009, -1/+15LOVING this game. Got it saturday and It's been a binge since then. Only complaint is the overly unexplained and confusing world tendency system. Excellent game.
- wisemandigg, on 10/14/2009, -1/+13This blogger says nothing about this great game, except the obvious "it's harder than most games". It's unclear whether he wants to criticize it or praise it, until he begins to start rationalizing challenging aspects of the game as design flaws. Yes, the equipment menus aren't ideal when you're put to the task of comparing the stats of equipped items. That's really the only complaint you can make... the other "faults" of the game (like the weighty combat and riposte mechanics) can only be analyzed as design choices: they could have just as easily taken the path of other action games and moved to twitch-combat or mass slaughter type mechanics.
Demon's Souls is neither of these. This is not a game where you slay thousands of enemies effortlessly like Dynasty Warriors or Diablo. It's not a game where you rack up huge combos with twitch button presses like Ninja Gaiden or DMC. It's meant to be a game where you meet enemies in single combat and slug it out... pairing off and taking enemies one at a time, while watching your back for other monsters that might sneak up on you. Timing and taking advantage of your openings is the paramount. It's an action game with RPG trappings, those who ultimately succeed will be those who become accustomed to the battle system. Sure, "grinding" can help some, but from what I've seen so far no amount of preparation can save you from a tough foe.
The author wants a game that is a perfectly linear experience, where you are presented with challenges but are never tested, and you make progress regardless of your success. Game Over is an outdated term, in his eyes. This is probably the same sort of individual, having become bored with singleplayer games reduced to mandatory achievement-earning chores, is willing to jump into a multiplayer game and see countless You Lose screens as he hones his skills. The idea of a video game as a solitaire experience is the problem that has been "fixed" by prior games in his eyes. This game proves that there was never any problem... save perhaps we've merely forgotten how to have fun without an internet connection.
That being said, Demon's Souls is quite a unique mass-cooperative and competitive experience too. It's not something your token FPS fan could probably chomp down on... it provides perhaps more a kind of stimulation that games like LittleBigPlanet, with everyone contributing to everyone else's collective enjoyment in a small way. - Zamfir, on 10/14/2009, -0/+12Both. Picked-up Demon's Souls earlier this week and I'm just about to pop in U2... Demon's Souls is one of those games that you can play forever. Not saying U2 doesn't have the a lot of replay value (especially considering the awesome multiplayer modes), but Demon's Souls is (finally!) a massive very high quality RPG that you won't toss aside after completing it once, or twice, or... :)
- SomeRandomGuy, on 10/14/2009, -3/+15It sounds like this guy's just kind of weak sauce, and can't handle how difficult the game is. The worst part is that when you start to enjoy it? That sounds it's enjoyable, but he feels guilty because he's not being rewarded for being bad at the game.
I'm loving it. When I've died, I know that it's not because I'm being cheaped (like say, Def Jam Vendetta) I know that it's because I'm mistiming my parry and leaving myself open for a power attack by a much stronger foe. If you fail, you die, it's the way it works. The "XP" you got for failing doesn't show up in the game, it shows up in your improved skills. - b3owulf, on 10/13/2009, -2/+13I don't particularly remember Perfect Dark requiring much thought or skill... though I do remember it being awesome. As soon as I'm done with Uncharted 2 I'll be picking up Demon's Souls...
- Kimera2006, on 10/14/2009, -0/+10Damn, here I go again blowing my money on games this time of year
- Cerebron, on 10/14/2009, -1/+11The link to joystiq.com tipped me off.
- jander86, on 10/14/2009, -1/+10I just got done playing it for 6 hours straight, something I haven't done in a game for many, many years. I can't wait to start level 1-2!
- biopmonkey, on 10/14/2009, -1/+9Learn to play in soul mode! lol
- happyimbecile, on 10/14/2009, -1/+9This game is great because it actually makes you learn how to play and get better at it. The combat is surprisingly deep and rewarding for those who get good at it. The multiplayer is pretty original too.
Took me forever to beat 1-1, but once you do that, it starts getting easier because you have a better understanding of the game. - TotalHalibut, on 10/14/2009, -2/+10The blogger needs to Harden the ***** Up.
- happyimbecile, on 10/14/2009, -0/+7No, the point is to find something YOU like, rather than something like elongates your e-peen,
- sdigroup, on 10/15/2009, -0/+7Demon's Souls has consumed me
- splosion, on 10/14/2009, -1/+8Dugg for Vagrant Story
- TmlMatus, on 10/14/2009, -1/+7it really really ... reminds me of vagrant story, if anyone cares ... excellent game ... but it sure isn't for new age gamers.
- Kimera2006, on 10/14/2009, -2/+8I just got a PS3, which game should I get, Demon's Souls or Uncharted 2?
- Zamfir, on 10/14/2009, -0/+6Joystiq sucks. I never expect much from their "reviews". It's always best to look elsewhere for useful game information/opinions.
- SmashDash, on 10/14/2009, -1/+7God damn you, Black Phantoms! Damn you to hell!
- jacksons98, on 10/14/2009, -0/+5Uncharted2 is unbelievable. It's quality all the way around. I'm still waiting on Amazon to ship my Demons Souls preorder :(
- milkohol, on 10/16/2009, -0/+5Real Demon's Souls starts now
- inactive, on 10/14/2009, -4/+8Why is everyone so puss about the difficulty level? That's all I hear in this game "It's so hard, it's so hard!" - it's REALLY not that bad.
I take it half these players haven't ever played Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden Sigma/Black/2. Those games were far more unforgiving.. - Alverez, on 10/14/2009, -0/+4Yeah I personally though that DMC3 and Ninja 1 were much harder games. Yeah Demon's Souls is hard but once you get past the first 2hrs or so and lvl up a few times it gets much easier.
tip: Cling Ring its what's for dinner. - scruffybr, on 10/16/2009, -0/+4Demon's Souls is great, it's one tough game and I wouldn't want it any other way
- Narishma, on 10/14/2009, -1/+4If you can find it...
- Zamfir, on 10/14/2009, -1/+3Watch out for the flying red dragon :)
- limmer77, on 10/14/2009, -1/+3It`s wonderful
- darkened, on 10/14/2009, -3/+5I didn't think that game was hard, it was just cheap.
- Megadeth222, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2I'm in trouble, please digg this message...
- sroske, on 10/14/2009, -2/+4the reviewer makes the game sound like nethack...
- sdigroup, on 10/15/2009, -0/+2both
- Megadeth222, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2BOTH, I don't care what type of game you like. Get them both, Uncharted 2 is so amazingly put together, everything is just perfect, the graphics, the gameplay, everything, its just perfect, and you'll clock about 15 hours on it. When your done clear your schedule, and enjoy the greatest challenge in your life. I'm on demon's souls and i've played it for 26 hours and i'd say i'm 60% done with it. SOOO ADDICTING!
- Zamfir, on 10/14/2009, -1/+3Joystiq sucks. Nethack is cool.
- mouseattacks, on 10/16/2009, -0/+2Demon's Souls is a great game. And giving other players (black phantoms) the ability to jump into your game and try to kill you makes the game all the more fun, to me that is. This game is great. If you can't handle it, then you should not be playing it.
- SuicideMouse, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2I think I'll start my hunt now, because I'm not done playing through Uncharted 2 yet but I really want to find a copy before I do. Damn though, while playing the few games I've played in the last week or two when I'm not playing Uncharted 2, I find myself comparing them to Uncharted 2. Generally this causes a decline in my interest of playing whatever I was playing.
I'm honestly concerned that for a little while Uncharted 2 is going to be like dating the hottest girl you ever will and then losing her and trying to date other chicks. - mooheiferghandi, on 10/15/2009, -1/+2So the game is a leather clad mistress but there are none actually in the game?
I feel so used now. - tykjen, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1Lovely game. Havent cried NOOOOO at every death in a game for decades. Sometimes silly deaths, untimely deaths, and im to blame. But its so unforgiving, i cant get enough. What other game for the past 10years has monsters respawning when you die, no saves, no checkpoints, stats, insane combat, coop, single player yet online with asssist feature (one in alive form, rest in nexus form). It just needs a friendlist and ingamechat for the coop parts.
- nickert0n, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1Ive been in Digg form so long...
- themadhatter444, on 10/14/2009, -4/+5I've been looking for an excuse to pick up a PS3 slim for quite some time. Thankfully, this seems to be the system seller this season.
- nickert0n, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1Suicide Mouse - So well said. 1+
- Cubine, on 10/14/2009, -2/+3I'm really happy that a game like this is apparently doing really well with very little hype ahead of time. Typically these days we hear about the next blockbuster title many months, even years in advance, and the gaming press hypes the hell out of it until you finally get ahold of it and it's less than you thought it would be. It's nice to be able to go into a game without expecting everything from it and having it surprise you with its depth and, like this blogger found out, its difficulty.
- fonderplague, on 10/14/2009, -1/+2don't look for any game at best buy or future shop. try PNP games. might get lucky
- MrFisty, on 10/14/2009, -3/+3How hard is this compared to Ninja Gaiden Sigma?
- CynicalTyler, on 10/14/2009, -3/+2Dude, get a blog. Digg is for comments, not essays.
- Nyaasee, on 10/14/2009, -5/+2play the U2 demo, if you really like it get it. Buy demon's souls or hold out for Borderlands Oct 20.
- CoD4, on 10/14/2009, -8/+5They really need to put a demo out already, or i won't buy it until february
