- Ummagumma, on 08/14/2008, -3/+57All I know is, the PS3 really is a spectacular Blu-Ray player, it's pretty breathtaking actually. It does a great job upscaling regular DVDs as well.
- phinn, on 08/14/2008, -16/+57It plays lots of great games, Blu-ray movies, DVD up-converting, multimedia streaming, web browsing, etc. And now Criterion uses it?
More evidence of Playstation 3's greatness. - EatingPie, on 08/14/2008, -4/+34I bought a release PS3 player primarily for Blu-ray, and secondary as a game console. When it came out, no other BD player could match the price -- game playback was thrown in "free" so to speak -- and I knew Sony used high quality components so I wasn't worried about image quality at all.
I also knew that it would receive every single update for BD capability. When I bought it Profile 2.0 wasn't finished yet, but for sure the PS3 would get the update. Now, bfore this becomes a Profile Rag Session, every Blu-ray player since the beginning will play a Profile 2.0 movie disk; Profile 2.0 only effects Special Features.
And, of course, if there's ever a bug with a specific disk (ala the first Matrix DVD release), I knew Sony would first fix it on the PS3. And that's a guarantee for the life of this console!
-Pie - Zamfir, on 08/14/2008, -5/+34Pointless comment.
- Trat, on 08/14/2008, -12/+35Sony also pwned MS with their HDDVD POS...
- charlescheese, on 08/14/2008, -6/+25Really? Play some Uncharted, play some Pixeljunk Eden, play some MGS4, wtf is wrong with you man? Don't you like great games?
- Blandyman, on 08/15/2008, -0/+15Does it show how crappy Blu-Ray is or does it show how bloated the price of Blu-Ray players are? Or how those companies can't operate on a loss because they don't make much money of the movies, while Sony can because they make money off the movies AND the games?
- Jektal, on 08/15/2008, -1/+14Your logic: It doesn't work that way.
- phinn, on 08/15/2008, -3/+16Xbox is more expensive than PS3 so not worth it, I would need $400 Xbox (elite), $100 wifi, $50 xbox live, $20 rechargable batteries... everything PS3's come with right out of the box for $150+ cheaper.
- moraldebate, on 08/15/2008, -5/+17I love my Blu-Ray player and PS3 to death but Jesus, can these goddamn discs start costing less than 30 ***** dollars?
And I kind of feel sorry for people who don't use the PS3 for gaming - Soul Calibur 4, GTA4 (which look and play better on here), MGS4, Resistance and PixelJunk Eden are truly great games. - kingmanic, on 08/15/2008, -0/+12PS3 is a good BD player, a great PS2 substitute, a decent mame box for your HDTV with ubuntu/YDL, a decent desktop with ubuntu/YDL, and a good current gen system.
Value wise it's pretty good. If only they could hold onto more exclusives, get more PSone games on PSN. Maybe a PSP style ram upgrade would be nice too. - coheedcollapse, on 08/15/2008, -1/+12I've never spent more than $15 on a blu-ray. Just keep your eye out for deals and you'll find plenty of them for cheap. You can get many good DVD's on Amazon for something around $12.
Also remember - when DVD first came out they were just as expensive. It might take a year or two, but the median price will fall. - kingmanic, on 08/15/2008, -2/+13So your going to eat 60% of the retail value of the machine to resell it to buy a worse player and put some money towards a xbox?
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -2/+12I love this. I work at a store where we build custom computers, and there's this one ***** who comes in from time to time. He knows his ***** about a lot of stuff, but he's a pompous ass who won't admit he's wrong about others.
He firmly maintains the PS3 is a ***** blu-ray player, with poor image processing.
I firmly maintained he's high off his ass and the PS3 is sweet.
Now I know many an expert agrees that this guy is a *****. - volacide, on 08/15/2008, -0/+10@kirbymorph: Dumb.
- elitebmo, on 08/15/2008, -0/+9Not to mention the PS3 is cheap compaired to a lot of blu-ray players currently on the market. I believe it was actually the cheapest a few months ago,
- superkendall, on 08/15/2008, -1/+10And there's nothing wrong with that if so - what's wrong with having the most easily updated Blu-Ray media player ever?
I myself use it mostly as a Blu-Ray player, but also like quite a few of the PSN games a great deal. I just don't have time for many full length games anymore. - Nosferax, on 08/15/2008, -3/+12I use mine as a Blu-ray player too and it also makes a great media streamer especially when combined to TVersity. I almost never play games on it (except for Pain) but I use it all the time to watch media projected my 106" screen from my PCs.
- phinn, on 08/15/2008, -3/+11Yea there are a ton of great games for PS3 lately. I really like Battlefield Bad Company online, even better than Warhawk in my opinion. But Warhawk for $30 is now a steal, especially when they release 1.5 with trophies in a couple weeks.
- phinn, on 08/15/2008, -0/+8If one is slightly sharper and the other has deeper color how do you chose a winner? Because Blu-ray is pretty damn sharp I think I would like to see a deeper color.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -15/+22That's all mine gets used for honestly.
- kingmanic, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6I have a launch 60GB. SO I may have a distorted view over new PS3 owners. It plays the CPS2 generation of games fine. I haven't tried The CPS3 ones, I hear they stutter a bit. Performance varies with settings. I usually use pixel for pixel EMU and use a utility that runs mainly on a SPU called "scaler" to scale it fullscreen. As a desktop it's fine. Has keyboard and mouse support. It's a really lite desktop for sure but for browsing and simple tasks it's okay. Anything heavy duty like compiling require heavy disk swapping due to the RAM being only 512 with a odd physical split. SDL MAME took 45 min to install and there was a lot of disk thrashing.
- RudeTurnip, on 08/15/2008, -1/+6I don't know why you're getting dugg down...the PS3 and even the 360 make fantastic set-top boxes that work with TVersity, allowing you to watch RSS feed video podcasts right on your TV.
- phinn, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5Yea you can get them online at places like Amazon.com and Half.com, most of them are under $20. In stores just keep an eye out for deals and they will be cheaper too. DVDs were very pricey when they came out too.
- theaceoffire, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4Hi, my name is TheAceOfFire, and I have been a Fanboy for 5 years, 4 months. As a result, I am mentally handicapped, also known as `retarded`.
"Hi TheAceOfFire!" - ZoomBoy, on 08/15/2008, -5/+9How much are you invoicing Sony for that ad?
- theaceoffire, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3PS3 needs more games with online coop...
BOTH consoles need more games with online+local coop (Two people local per console, maybe more). - phinn, on 08/15/2008, -8/+11Clearly your not into gaming, there are 300+ games out for PS3 and it's only been out 1 1/2 years. Most of them multi-platform, some of the exclusive, lots of them very good. Two rated 10.0 (can't say that for any other system).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_3 ... - DarkShroud, on 08/16/2008, -0/+3The 360 does upscale, but it's DVD playback in general is garbage The 360 only scored a 40 of 130 on the HQV test, which the PS3 maxed out I believe.
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,2228134 ... - Jektal, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3PS3 needs more games with offline multiplayer!
- CarzorStelatis, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3The other thing that the PS3 has going for it bluray-wise is wifi. While there are plenty of Profile 2.0 bluray players out there, all they have is a wired Ethernet port so you'd better be in the same room as your router.
- crash331, on 08/15/2008, -1/+4I just found the answer to my own question. Looks like October 08.
http://www.criterion.com/blu-rayannounce.html - modix, on 08/16/2008, -0/+3Noisy? Mine sits about 6 feet from me and I can't hear it, even when the room is quiet. When a movie is running... not even close to being audible. You are the first person I've ever heard mention it being noisy, so perhaps you should get your unit looked at.
- qwertycopter, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2How do the Criterion Collection people pick what movies to re-release and is there a list of upcoming releases anywhere?
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -3/+5After comparing my Samsung UP5000 to my PS3 - the UP5000 wins by a hair.
Slightly sharper then the PS3, but the PS3 has deeper color.
With the PS3 being 2.0 compatible, it is pretty much the best blu-ray player you can get right now. - DivisibleByZero, on 08/15/2008, -2/+4It makes sense to have it be the player you test and design for even if it isn't the best -- it's the one everybody's using.
- Blandyman, on 08/16/2008, -0/+2CarzorStelatis:
Thanks, that's what I didn't know, because a 360 Pro and it's hooked up via component. - inactive, on 08/16/2008, -0/+2hence the reason im getting one in christmas
dark knight HD? SOLD! - gettarat, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1That's all mine gets used for honestly.
http://blockbusternewreleases.org/ - Pake, on 08/15/2008, -2/+3You'd hope it would be, when you consider all the new players are still $400 and lack even the basic 1gb memory to be considered 2.0 ready (sure, you can purchase a flash drive for that), but still, you walk away with a similar performing system that contains 10% of the features. Sony and the rest of the manufacturers need to pull their heads out of their asses, because a gaming system should cost the exact same as a standalone and outperform the living ***** of the standalones on top of that. Sony's new 350 and 550 should be $250 and $350 systems respectively. As for video quality, you can get better, but those current players cost 2x to 3x the value and lack 2.0 still.
- coyote1284, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1seconded + PS2 games
- coyote1284, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1tree fitty
- soundsofreason, on 08/15/2008, -3/+4You should sell your mom, buy a cheaper mom, and then use the extra pair of vertical lips to keep your mouth shut.
- CarzorStelatis, on 08/15/2008, -1/+2@Blandyman:
The 360 does upscale DVDs - MS added that in an update last year. It just can't upscale over component - which the PS3 doesn't do either - because of legal restrictions by the DVD Forum. I don't use it as a DVD player often (erm... noise) so I don't know whether it's comparable to the PS3. - kingmanic, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1They ask everyone who bought a iPhone "I'm rich" gem what movies they like, then they do those movies.
- crownedgriffin, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1Every time I find myself on the Criterion website, I see a bunch of movies that I want to buy, and then think "never mind" when I see the price. I'm not paying $35 for a movie. Ever.
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -0/+1all good except for the games part
- jfujita, on 08/16/2008, -0/+1http://www.criterion.com/blu-rayannounce.html
- DarkShroud, on 08/16/2008, -0/+1Just remember that Best Buy will price match to web sites like Amazon, Half, & Deep Discount as long as you have a print out with you.
- theaceoffire, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1I wasn't a huge fan of Eden, but I give a huge thumbs up for the new Bionic Commando remix thing.
For any 360 owners out there, you should pick up the demo too.. its addicting.
Oh, and that Elephun game turned out to be awesome too. (Build bridges to help elephants across, as fast as possible with as few pieces to get max points). -
