- drtyfrnk, on 12/14/2007, -5/+58This is the best decision that I've heard in a while about a big name video game. No one wants to spend 2x the money for almost the same game. I just hope they don't rush the multiplayer section to get this out on time, I hope it's a great multiplayer.
It's the only reason I'm buying a PS3. - Burgoo, on 12/14/2007, -5/+56Not to sound like an ***** but shouldn't this have been how it was from the start?
- swaggadocio, on 08/20/2008, -9/+47This is an extremely compelling reason to buy a PS3.
- gekkjo, on 05/05/2009, -8/+37I think my earlier submission about this already fell out of digg's upcoming queue. Digging this up cause it is a huge deal, Metal Gear fans want it and more importantly Sony needs the game to be big. Having multi-player included in the retail package can only drive sales I would hope.
- Lane, on 12/14/2007, -9/+29This is the greatest news since the orange box came out.
- Godmil, on 12/14/2007, -2/+18Wait, how much of this is new... or accurate?
The article has this line: "on five 'Starter Pack' maps". And it was known weeks ago that MGS4 would ship with a 'starter pack' version of MGO, with a full retail coming later on. - InfinitySnatch, on 12/14/2007, -1/+15"I have[n't] liked any of the solid games after the first on PS1."
Just go play Subsistence and thank me later. Jesus Christ. - supermanred, on 12/14/2007, -20/+32Wow dude, multiplayer. Good for you. The PS3 is coming along I see...
- InfinitySnatch, on 12/14/2007, -4/+14Is forever too long for you?
- CrimsonFate, on 12/14/2007, -4/+12Set your standards higher.
- CrimsonFate, on 12/14/2007, -1/+8They said the same thing about Assassin's Creed.
- teqonix, on 12/14/2007, -3/+10Ah, excellent. Ever since I heard the idea of them being seperate entities, I thought it was a stupid decision. Great news, for sure.
- crussell96, on 12/14/2007, -1/+8Really? You think Halo 3 would have sold 5 mill if you had to pay $120 for single and multi-player?
- sugarhigh4242, on 12/14/2007, -6/+13I'll be happy for the Diggers that buy a PS3 for this game alone.
After you beat it, you can check out some of the ***** incredible PS3 exclusives from 2007 that you ignored because "PS3 has no games". - thebaron2, on 12/14/2007, -1/+7Honestly - is this a whole different game or just a fancy way of saying MGS4 will have online modes? If it's the latter, isn't this expected by now or is it really newsworthy?
...and don't get me wrong, MGS is awesome and I'll probably buy a PS3 when it drops, but I was assuming that there'd be an online component. - mywhitenoise, on 12/14/2007, -2/+8I would assume less people would enjoy it. People who buy MGO will buy MGS4, but people (like myself) will gladly pay $60 for MGS4, and say "***** it" for an online package that should have been included with the game.
- Twoje, on 12/14/2007, -2/+8Every console, to me at least, has multiple killer apps for which I purchase the console. As good as MGS4/MGO is/are going to be (I hope), I wouldn't purchase a PS3 just for the game(s).
I REALLY want to own Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but I'm not willing to pay $250 + $50 to get a Wii, because I hate the direction Nintendo has gone with the Wiimote and would only enjoy one of the system's games (SSBB, as it doesn't require you to use the Wiimote).
To people who say they bought a console just for one game are either ignorant, rich, or liars. - Katana314, on 12/14/2007, -1/+6Wait...wasn't this already the case?
I hope the multiplayer isn't as bad as Japan's normal attempts are. If you'll notice...most great online games are made elsewhere. - pixelate, on 12/14/2007, -1/+6MGS is a great series, but it doesn't have the wide appeal that a Halo or SSBB/Mario-based game has. So not quite a killer app.
I don't think the "one flagship title" is going to happen with the PS3... they will need 2 or 3 titles (GT5, Killzone, MGS come to mind) to serve as standard bearers. Could happen. - ProKid, on 12/14/2007, -0/+5Oh, you can. And you will.
- adraft, on 12/14/2007, -0/+5Why wouldn't you just give the infinite number of snatches you seem to have?
- ProKid, on 12/14/2007, -0/+5If your hoping its like SOCOM then this isn't the game for you
- pixelate, on 12/14/2007, -0/+5Please don't ask that question. Microsoft might be watching.
(They just rolled out 3 new *maps* for $10, and people are paying it. So...) - Nobi-Wan, on 12/14/2007, -2/+7I played the ***** out of MGS3 online. That game was way fun. The only downside to it was that it was released as a seperate game over a year later and the servers were shut down less than a year after that. I hope they don't pull the same crap for you guys that get MGS4.
I'm still not going buy a PS3 only to risk that happening again. I might have to rent a PS3 and the game so I can play it, though. - InfinitySnatch, on 12/14/2007, -2/+7I am grateful. This means the multiplayer aspects haven't distracted the developers from the actual game. I'm looking at you, Halo 3.
- drizzlelicious, on 12/14/2007, -1/+6If it had, the second it came to the 360, you'd claim it was the greatest game ever made.
- emjaymj, on 12/14/2007, -13/+18As much as I love the MGS series, it's just not compelling enough to drop $500 for ONE game.
- andycr512, on 12/14/2007, -0/+4But it also took snake from being a believable, normal, pessimistic guy to being a crazy back-flipping cocky ninja... Example: MGS1 on PSX: Snake runs, missile from helicopter blows up where he was, he fires a missile back. MGS1 on GC: Missile gets fired from helicopter, Snake does backflip, lands on moving missile, jumps off missile, shoots missile, and lands unharmed.
- Rev0lver, on 12/14/2007, -0/+4So is your sense of humor, but you don't see me complaining.
- solidus636, on 12/14/2007, -4/+8Ok, where do I pre-order?
- theodenking, on 12/14/2007, -3/+7Every console has its killer app.
- iceblademan, on 12/14/2007, -2/+6If I had to valet park your car, I'd put it in the 'ass' section.
- Nobi-Wan, on 12/14/2007, -0/+4MGS3 had about 3 and a half hours. That was on the PS2 and they seemed to do it easily. The MGS cinematics use the in-game engine. It's not like some pre-rendered CGI cutscene so I don't see how it would be a big deal.
- Bara, on 12/14/2007, -3/+6Yea, when I first heard they were selling them separate I thought "Wtf? Seriously?" It went against everything else out there. I mean, MGS4 is going to be amazing, but the Online is unproven and there's no guarantee it'll be good, why sell it separately?
- walnutthewise, on 12/14/2007, -1/+4What crappy game lineup? I just bought a PS3 and mostly exclusive games that are all a blast to play.
-Uncharted
-Rachet and Clank
-Resistance
-Warhawk - DatVillain83, on 12/15/2007, -0/+3Sony knows that MGS4 won't be a killer console seller regardless of what i think, however i'm glad Konami remained persistent with their vision for Metal Gear and decided to keep the title exclusive to one platform. That being said, this bundle was obviously a business decision, but a great one seeing that Konami has gambled much to have this ONE game put on the shelves. It's the last MGS title EVER, it might not move PS3 units but Konami spent a ***** on this production and i assume they expect it to sell for a while in the long run.
- Nobi-Wan, on 12/14/2007, -0/+3Play MGS3.
- adraft, on 12/14/2007, -0/+3What was the MGS3 extended version, Persistence? I'd say they're both worth a look.
And nostalgia aside, exactly what do you miss from the NES versions that later versions haven't offered? An awkward top down view? - politik192, on 12/14/2007, -2/+5I'm on the same boat as you, MGS4 is what makes getting a PS3 worth it for me even if its the only game I ever get for it.
- Twoje, on 12/14/2007, -1/+4I was under the impression that MGS4 is completely single player for the same reason Oblivion is, and MGO is completely multiplayer/online for the same reason Warhawk is.
The companies wanted to focus on making an amazing single player / multiplayer game.
So putting MGS4 and MGO together is like having two amazing games.
That's how I look at it... - postalblowfish7, on 12/14/2007, -1/+4considering that up to this point MGSO was being developed as its own stand alone product, i'm going to go ahead and assume it's pretty fully realized and not 'rushed'.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/14/2007, -2/+5Lots of bloggers and people who attend conventions have played both LBP and Metal Gear Online, and most previews are pretty ecstatic about both.
- scosner56, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2And Halo 3 wasn't over-rated or over-hyped.....
- samdu, on 12/17/2007, -0/+2Plenty of "Sony" games have had single and multiplayer. This, however, is NOT a Sony game. It's a Konami game.
- Myonosken, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2All three consoles sell content you retard.
- NeoTEKK, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2They still rent out systems? A ps3 at that?
- Nobi-Wan, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2"You're not very smart, are you?"
Fixed. - Nobi-Wan, on 12/14/2007, -4/+6Because multiplayer is released with the retail version? Isn't that what you should expect from the get-go?
- mywhitenoise, on 12/14/2007, -2/+4Then drop $400 on it. Or $300 if you buy directly from Sonystyle.
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -1/+3I really have my doubts about the whole MG:O thing. I think it's going to be one of those, "it gives you multiplayer and only that" type of deals, I couldn't imagine a ton of game customization will be involved. It might be decent compared to other PS3 online games, but in the long run, I don't think It'll be better than COD4 or Halo 3.
