- sanwedgy, on 02/06/2008, -20/+203IGN say the PS3 is 3 times faster at loading then the 360 version, with the worst areas being 6 seconds compared to 18 seconds.
I would guess that this isn't the PS3 owners complaining that much, as it is 360 owners trying to put a bad spin on things.
Anyone who is upset about waiting 20 min in the comfort of your own home should go wait for a bus in the rain for that long and gain a firmer grasp of reality. - wedges, on 02/06/2008, -8/+79it's not optional, but honestly, who wouldn't do it? i can't believe people are even making an issue out of this.
- whywait, on 02/06/2008, -2/+68i'm really getting sick of this ps3, 360 fanboy *****. just install the damn thing and enjoy the game. put your swords away for a minute jeez.
- Alcorr, on 02/06/2008, -8/+505GB? Seriously? Thats not that bad....
- Rookbird, on 02/06/2008, -2/+38What does the difference between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD have to do with this? 360 games aren't even on HD-DVD.
- aegis9975, on 02/06/2008, -4/+37Is there a reason why the 360 doesn't have the option to install to its HDD (at least for the Premium & Elite models)? I honestly hate load-times in the middle of a game, especially a fast-paced action game like DMC; it interrupts the pace of the game. I would really like this option for the 360.
- inactive, on 02/06/2008, -2/+24The install time isnt that big a deal, but if you have one of the smaller HD PS3s 5 gigs is a pretty damn big chunk of your HD.
It should be optional for that reason alone. - bmystry, on 02/06/2008, -7/+28While the install might be annoying at first those smooth transitions later on are really sweet and that goes for any game that has sweet sweet smoothness.
- funktimus, on 02/06/2008, -0/+21I hope Elder Scrolls does this if they make their next game anything like Oblivion.

*sound of controller shattering TV* - castleking, on 02/06/2008, -2/+23I don't own a PS3, but I can see how this would be a problem, especially for owners of the 20GB console. I don't know if Capcom feels have some sort of entitlement complex, but if every game for the PS3 had a mandatory 5GB install to the hard drive, that space will go away quickly. I know you can swap out a new hdd, but the average gamer is not going to install a higher capacity drive.
- Rookbird, on 02/06/2008, -1/+21He said CVG tested it, as in computerandvideogames.com, not that he bought two copies and tested them. NOW, that said, CVG didn't appear to have tested it extensively, only that the first few loads had merely a second for two of difference (which is slightly different than Jimbo's claim of "under a second").
- Kallius, on 02/06/2008, -2/+21[cantankerous old man rant]
I remember the days when you had to wait 15 minutes for a typical 16K game to load from cassette onto the computer, and sometimes it would fail to load right near the end and you'd have to start alllll over again! You whippersnappers got it so easy these days!
[/cantankerous old man rant] - krammaii, on 02/06/2008, -11/+29Poor DMC fans that bought the 20 gig SKU's... 25% of their hard drive is eaten up by DMC4.
- Dracusis, on 02/06/2008, -1/+1818 seconds in between the small rooms in this game IS a big deal. Wait until you play it, you'll soon get rather annoyed at your action being segmented by all of those loading screens. I'd gladly do a one off 20 min install to reduce the length of the pauses in between every room in the game, there will be hundreds of them and you'll be moving back and forth thought them quite a bit.
- TheG2, on 02/06/2008, -7/+24If the load times are faster than in the end, I'd settle for the 20 minute load time. That being said, I don't own a PS3 or X360 (Wii owner).
- volacide, on 02/06/2008, -7/+24Wow you couldn't be more wrong, that is not why we play console games. We play console games so we don't have to worry about upgrading to the next best motherboard, graphics card, CPU, RAM, HDD, and operating system.
- PunkRampant, on 02/06/2008, -2/+16I'm actually pissed that they didn't implement the same method for the 360. I could spare 20 minutes and a few gigs on my hard drive if it meant faster loading times for the rest of the game.
- theaceoffire, on 02/06/2008, -2/+15Not only does this not bother me, but I want them to start releasing patches for other PS3 games that could allow this kind of loading speedups. Not that it isn't fast, but any advantage is nice.
- TheDude01, on 02/06/2008, -2/+15It may be not an issue when it's only one game, but look at the bigger picture. If every console game that comes out will need to install 5gb of data on you're hard drive, then you will run out of space very soon. And what then? Uninstalling one, installing the second? The whole "console gaming experience" down the drain!
- Dracusis, on 02/06/2008, -11/+23Blu-Ray read speed:
36MB/s
DVD Read speed:
1X 1.32 MB/s
2X 2.64 MB/s
4X 5.27 MB/s
8X 10.55 MB/s
16X 21.09 MB/s
360 fans claiming that BD drivers are slow is an utter fallacy.
And IGN tested the PS3 and 360 load times, some of there were up to 15 seconds on the 360 compared to 1-2 seconds on the PS3. - kurtwinter, on 02/06/2008, -2/+14Whaaa! I bought a console because if I had patience I'd play on a PC.
Want waits, try reinstalling WoW - redline6800, on 02/06/2008, -2/+13I think that's probably because there's 'cheap' version of 360, that doesn't have a hard drive pre-installed in the system.
- haxmire, on 02/06/2008, -9/+19That is a better time than it takes to install windows.
- rimco, on 02/06/2008, -5/+14wooop-dee-doo, basil...
- JigoroKano, on 02/06/2008, -5/+14The bandwidth for BD is way higher than HD though, which is why BD movies can offer higher quality sound tracks (even though HD can store them, it can't play them with the video at minimum spec) and I think why some game developers are utilizing texture streaming on PS3 games.
The 360 DVD isn't single speed though, so these single speed comparisons are valid. - Flagg3, on 02/06/2008, -6/+15Yeah, what can they possibly do? Oh yeah, they can upgrade to a 100GB for $56, or a 250GB for $105. How horrible for them.
http://www.pricewatch.com/notebook_hard_drives/ - nreynolds, on 02/06/2008, -4/+13you don't have to install... oh wait. i just read it, you do? that's kinda bogus..
- cthellis, on 02/06/2008, -4/+13Dylson. LOL
- DarkShroud, on 02/06/2008, -2/+11Maybe one day you'll bother to read up on the transfer rates of Blu-ray. And if that day ever comes you'll discover that the 2x Blu-ray drive is roughly the same speed as the 12x DVD drive in the 360. Only Blu-ray transfers data at a constant speed unlike the DVD drive.
- louiedog, on 02/06/2008, -1/+9If it was optional that wouldn't matter.
- kurby, on 02/06/2008, -3/+11Load times are one of the most annoying aspects of most games. A long load time can be the reason you give up on a game. I know I have just said screw it sometimes because I keep failing at a level and have to keep putting up with load times. Honestly, I hope that every game does this in the future. PC gamers have to install their games and they never complained. However, I do agree that this should be optional if possible.
Good work Capcom! - hockey, on 02/06/2008, -1/+9This is the internet. People make an issue out of EVERYTHING.
- Dracusis, on 02/06/2008, -2/+10It was probably considered, but cut as it would have doubled the time/resources it spent in QA for the 360. I can understand them doing this for the PS3 as the HDD I/O is just one API and it's supported by all SKUs. I'd wager the API for Optical Media I/O and HDD I/O on the 360 are rather different, which would mean two different and redundant branches of code to test on the one platform.
- volacide, on 02/06/2008, -0/+7Personally Akaji I'm a big PC gamer, so I don't have a whole lot of trouble with all the upgrading, and a certain part of me enjoys it. The part that doesn't enjoy it is my wallet so I can totally see where people are coming from, and also the fact that people don't want to research nor really care about all the technical aspects of their hardware like I enjoy knowing about them. It's completely understandable.
HDD installation on the other hand is something that is going to happen more frequently actually I think. I mean look at TV, TV is now saved to HDD's in so many homes no a days thanks to DVRs.
Whatever happened to all the people saying CDs and DVDs and any kind of physical copy of a game or movie would be thrown out? Where did all of the digital download supporters go? I mean the backbone of a digital download is a HDD. - arcticblue, on 02/06/2008, -0/+7I've done a few installs of Vista and it's never taken me under 45 minutes. The longest was close to 2 hours. What kind of crazy hardware are you running?
- volacide, on 02/06/2008, -9/+16I really don't understand the complaints about this. Most of the people that can complain about this are the kids that are still in elementary school and high school with nothing else to do and aren't creative enough to think of a way to spend their time. *****, I know I have plenty of things that I could get done in that span of 20 minutes. And I could spend those twenty minutes accomplishing something knowing that it's going to end up with me having a smoother experience with the brand new installment of one of my favorite game series.
I guess my tolerance might also be helped considering I'm an avid PC gamer and installation time is expected. - Escamotage, on 02/06/2008, -1/+8Actually, there was a previous article by the DMC developers stating that they intended to have a 360 installation also but couldn't because of the Core console.
- chibimmy, on 02/06/2008, -5/+12With gamers being grouchy about the reported 5GB MANDATORY install of Devil May Cry 4
Buried for inability to read. - Akaji, on 02/06/2008, -4/+11Don't forget that it's 10x easier to play a video game while on a comfy couch/recliner than it is to play computer games in that situation. But yeah, I'd say hardware standardization is one of the best things about console games.
- JayD16, on 02/06/2008, -3/+10You say that now! Wait until your thumb slips and you accidentally back up into the previous section after you had just left it. 18 seconds turns into a minute wait.
- Rakuseki, on 02/06/2008, -5/+11You can replace the HD with an aftermarket one.
- estvir, on 02/06/2008, -6/+12Are you seriously comparing installing an OPERATING SYSTEM to a videogame on a CONSOLE? What the hell? Also, I can install Vista, Ubuntu and Leopard all in under 20 minutes.
- cthellis, on 02/06/2008, -1/+7I thought the PS3 version made better use of pre-loading and caching already, bringing it up pretty close to the PC in regards to loading time?
- whyufail, on 02/06/2008, -2/+8If elitism was a crime, digg wouldn't have any more users.
- DarkShroud, on 02/06/2008, -0/+6Pray it doesn't RRoD?
- saturdaysaint, on 02/06/2008, -3/+9A new 250 gig hard drive was a no-brainer accessory for me when I bought my PS3 last week and really makes the DMC4 a non-issue for me, personally. If I'd gone the 360 route, I would have had to buy a WiFi Kit, 2 Play and Charge Kits, and the HD Drive (part of the appeal of next-gen for me is high-def movies), so the PS3 was still a comparatively great deal with that $100 add-on.
- arcticblue, on 02/06/2008, -1/+6Oh look, guess I was right. You did post this again. If I see this one more time below, you're going on my block list.
- pegisys, on 02/06/2008, -3/+8Wasn't that one of the biggest arguement against PC games. I personally don't care about installs, but there have been plenty of times that I would read on forums about people saying how much better the PS2 was than PC because you could just put the game in and play and would rather have a slightly longer load time instead of one long install.
I have actually seen people do all types of weird math just to justify the fact, so I don't know if saying that it's 360 owners trying to put a bad spin on it is valid. - Dracusis, on 02/06/2008, -4/+9LOL, yeah, and the 360 has one of those too, oh wait, but the devs can't ever use it because not all of their SKUs support it. Sucks to be an xbox owner, even if you have a HDD the devs won't actually use it in games.
- polywaffle, on 02/06/2008, -1/+6Probably one of the best things sony ever did, was make their hard drive upgradeable. Remember how expensive an 8mb memory card used to be?
