- JayD16, on 10/11/2007, -11/+39The Wii also has batteries that don't recharge...
- coheedcollapse, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27I have different experiences with my controllers than Jimbojim. My Wii batteries seem to discharge faster than my SIXAXIS (or about the same if I'm not using the nunchuck). I don't have much to go by though because the longest that I've played my Wii in a straight gaming marathon is only a few hours so I could be totally wrong.
JayD-
Although the stock controller batteries don't recharge, I've replaced my Wii controller with two 2500mah rechargeable batteries. That helps not only the battery life, but also the fact that I don't have to go out and buy batteries every time my controller runs out. - nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -10/+28my sixaxis lasts a really long time. I hardly ever have to charge it. Plus, when I do, it's no work at all like finding AA batteries for my 360 controller is(I'm not gunna buy something extra to have rechargable batteries like it should have come with).
- zachblume, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17LOL HE SAID DON'T STEAL FROM ENGADGET
(psst, I think he is new to the internets) - charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -6/+20The Wii goes through batteries like crazy. I have a Wii and PS3, and I hate that the wiimote doesn't include rechargeable batteries, and further, has horrible battery life.
- JayD16, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14I think cost and weight prevent them from doing it...
- profingersk8er, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16"and we all know the Xbox 360 controller is miles ahead of the PS3 controller (voted as the best controller out of the 3 big consoles)."
I'm sorry but this is pure opinion. Many (including myself) prefer Playstation's controller over 360's. - rockrapdude, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13In racing games it tells you when you're on the curb, for better lap times. In shooters it tells you that somebody you missed, is shooting at you, so you wouldn't get killed. The visuals always don't cut it.
- rick2k, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15i recharge my sixaxis like 1 a fortnight and i game a about 2 hours a day.
they last forever!
also there is NO WAY the wiimotes motion sensing is as good or better than the sixaxis by FAR. I am terribly disappointed in my wii and the wiimote. It is the most sluggish unresponsive controller ever imo. Either that or the games just suck using motion atm.
either way it is terrible to use and just pisses me off more than anything.. sixaxis on the other hand feels great to use but there isnt any games other than super rubadub and flow atm that i feel use it right :P - AggieTales, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10@joeshlub
Actually that whole lawsuit has been resolved now, and with that new hopes for a rumble SIXAXIS. Those new hopes are what the article addresses. - SomeManbeapig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I think it's ok that they are checking for problems before shipping it. The last thing ps3 owners want to see is their controller catching fire...
- omnibahumut, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Batteries for the Wii: Stop bitching, fork over $20 for a cheap charger and 4 AAs from RadioShack (or ask for them for a birthday gift or something). Also a AA/AAA battery charger can be used for more than just your Wii. Don't be angry at nintendo for giving you an opportunity to save some cash. Would you rather have Nintendo branded batteries and a proprietary charger?
Rumble: I like how it wasn't annoying until Sony decided to take it out. - Ajajadude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@coheedcollapse
It definitely took me a little while to get used to the lightweight SIXAXIS, but I do miss the rumble sensation from time-to-time. There have been a few instances where the rumble feature would help me out in a game. - kenvsryu, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9It lasts me around 8 hours of gaming throughout the week. That's more than enough. I have to recharge my bluetooth headset, which I only use for gaming, 3x during the same period.
- NeoTechni, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7"My wish for the new controller is that Sony adds removable batteries (AA) and that they make better triggers"
Using AA's is the worst suggestion ever. And the battery inside SIXAXIS IS REPLACEABLE! Replacements are available already.
And Sony's triggers are second only to Gamecubes.
XBOXes, 360s and Dreamcasts thin ones suck, they hurt a lot in some games like Gears of War and Crazy Taxi, which rely on them far too much.
Sonys wider ones don't put all the pressure in a small area, and don't cause pain.
I'd rather YOU (and only you) feel like the triggers are going to break, than my fingers feel like they are going to break from using the triggers. - jakeg, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9the first thing I do any time I play a game is to turn the rumble off, anyway. when I bought my wireless PS2 controllers, I specifically sought out controllers without rumble, and they're lighter, and i don't care for the rumble in the first place. Turns out logitech makes some rather nice PS2 wireless controllers without rumble.
do people really like the rumble that much? ive never felt that it adds anything to the gaming experience, but maybe I just don't get it... - CamZak, on 10/11/2007, -8/+13I think the sixaxis has a 3.7 volt 600something mh battery. In my opinion, it already drains a little too fast already. But, just use slightly smaller motors and a larger battery. There's plenty of spare space in the controller. Sure I'm simplifying it, but if there's other wireless controllers with rumble, obviously it's not that hard to do.
My bet is that Sony will sell a Sixaxis 'enhanced' or something like that for $10 more. This is sony after all. - NeoTechni, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Except SIXAXIS's batteries will take far more charges than any AA
- coheedcollapse, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8@Ajajadude
Yeah, another thing is that I can see myself opting for the original Sixaxis for some games. As much as it sucks that you don't get that rumble, I'm surprised how much weight the little spinning motors add when rumble is included. The SIXAXIS is damn light and I love it. - formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I think the bigger issue are the endless amount of batteries that you need to go through on the 360 controller. Not only do you spend way more time recharging the 360 batteries, but you're also doing more harm to the environment by throwing out those batteries. Even if you're using rechargeable batteries, you're still going to throw them out sometimes.
- Ajajadude, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Nationwide poll? I don't remember being asked about my preferences and opinions.
What about you? - Ajajadude, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9"SixAxis: Motion sensors
360 controller: Rumble"
Going to be a non-issue soon.
"SixAxis: Dual analog sticks, with emphasis on outdated d-pad
360 controller: Dual analog sticks more ergonomically placed, less emphasis on d-pad"
Outdated d-pad? I still find it quite useful. Just because Microsoft never really had anything going with the d-pad doesn't mean it's outdated. As far as the dual sticks placement, I don't find either controller to be any better than the other.
"SixAxis- Rechargeable battery
360 controller - have to buy rechargeable battery or use double AA"
If Microsoft had a system where you could recharge as you play like the PS3 does, it'd help things out a lot more in this department.
"SixAxis- Lighter
360 controller - heavier"
Weight isn't an issue for me, it's not like it's something we have to travel with like a laptop. Though, I have found that it would be nice to have a heavier controller while playing as the Goblin in Spider-Man 3 on the PS3.
"SixAxis - regular controller
360 controller - ergonomic to your hands"
I've always been slightly more comfortable with the PS controller. Dunno why, maybe I'm more used to it and I still have the old "massive" Xbox controller in the back of my head whenever I pick up my 360 controller.
"SixAxis - trigger buttons
360 controller - trigger buttons"
I like the PS trigger buttons better. They're right on top of each other, so I don't have to spread my fingers out anymore than I have to. I actually get pain in my hands and fingers when I play my 360 for any extended period of time (more than 45 minutes).
It's all about preference. I think if you're used to the PS controllers, you'll probably like them better. But to try and breakdown the differences into pros and cons then try and come up with a winner that is undoubtedly based on personal preference is just ridiculous. It's just more fanboy crap. I've got both the 360 and PS3 and I don't have any strong preference for either, I'm just used to the buttons and button placement on the PS controller.
EDIT: Ran out of time on my last reply. - thugbear2005, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I, along with many other ps3 owners i know, dont miss the rumble at all. not only is the controller lighter which will help when having to hold your controller for a while, but when i get warhawk i dont want to be thrown off by my controller vibrating.
- NeoTechni, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Holy crap what did you guys do to your controllers? Both of mine last over 24 hours ona full charge
- napsack, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8@profingersk8er
I agree, I feel the PlayStation controller is much more comfortable, but something in me tells me that its probably because I've been using it for many more years than a 360 controller.
On another topic, I wish Sony would have released their boomerang version of sixaxis instead of chucking the idea. - Ajajadude, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5He's putting up numbers of what people experience with the current controller design. That way, people can try and extrapolate as to how long a rumble controller might last.
Think outside the box. - rockrapdude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Extra battery? Extra long cord?
- Ajajadude, on 10/11/2007, -7/+10I can get AAs for chump change at work, why would I go out and buy a rechargeable pack?
It's the concept of thing, really. You can get the 360 controller for what, $40? And that's without the rechargeable pack. I can get a PS3 controller for $50 and it's rechargeable.
I haven't any longevity issues with my PS3 controller, but I was actually thinking the other day how the addition of a rumble feature would affect the battery life. - chriskzoo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7But dude, you can swing the Wii-mote and it cures cerebral palsy!
- vawksel, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7I'd love to see that.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Simple solution: Place the controller on a charger every time your done using it, I do the same thing with my MX Revolution mouse, every time I walk away I turn it off and put it on the charger
Its just as simple as that - grumpyrain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I don't understand what the battery issue is.
With cheap zinc carbon imports, the Wii lasts a couple of days, but I have had alkaline rechargables in there for a while now and they last about 3-4 weeks. If they can incorporate a charger into the controller, it will be great. The biggest criticism I have of the Wii remote is the lack of a built in charger. - MWeather, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3"just use slightly smaller motors and a larger battery."
More mass + less power =crappy rumble - formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2
Awesome mouse. The continuous scrolling wheel is wicked. - jcmagnus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I don't really care much for the rumble since I always turned the rumble off to save some battery life on my Logitech controller for the PS2. After a while I completely forgot about the rumble on the controller. Rumble or not, at least it doesn't really affect me.
- grumbel, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5There is nothing that prevents Sony from sticking a more powerful battery in the controller, it already has a build-in battery, so they are not limited by what a AA can do in terms of size and power.
- mikeon, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5@tubejay (#7237978)
Bet Nintendo has plans for the Wii revision 2 models, or maybe even later, to include rechargeable batteries. Remember the Gameboy advance, and then the SP comes out with rechargeable batteries. - carpespasm, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7or better than that, buy some rechargable AAs, good ones aren't more than 3x the price of plain AAs anyway
- roxya, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2My Sixaxis lasts for ages. It's sooo bloody annoying when I realise I finally need to recharge it.
I'd rather have the battery last for ages than have rumble. Haven't missed it at all. Most games just use a bit of rumble when you get hit / hit something, which seems utterly pointless. - lickmygiggle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Ugh, I've always hated the Xbox's controllers (360, and Xbox1) the placement of the analog sticks is completely unnatural.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yeah...but the sensitivity is to low for me T_T
- djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4"It lasts me around 8 hours of gaming throughout the week."
That's way too short - I'd call Sony and get a replacement. Mine lasts for around twice that long on a full charge. - catharz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not sure if I'd go for an upgrade either.
I purchased 2 controllers at launch, thinking I'd get another 2 when rumble was re-introduced. That way I can choose which I want to use for each game.
Btw, the Wii controller battery life sucks. I can remember the first time the batteries went: I was like, wtf?
The six-axis are pretty good though. I generally get 3-4 week days or a whole weekend out of each controller. While I'm playing on one, I recharge the other. - huarifaifa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1>The Wii goes through batteries like crazy. I have a Wii and PS3, and I hate that the wiimote doesn't include
> rechargeable batteries, and further, has horrible battery life.
I use 2700 mAh rechargeable batteries. They last ~15 hours on my Wiimote, good enough for me. - lickmygiggle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The true mark of the 12 year old: Incredible lack of punctuation, and breaking sentences with long strings of "ha".
- huhCooL, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually I find the Sixaxis works great in Resistance: Fall Of Man. It's very subtle usage, but having to violently shake the controller to get free yourself of the monsters that grab onto you is a great touch and helps to make one feel like they are 'in the game.'
- zleilndka, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Xbox introduced a redesigned controller that succeeded, GBA/DS introduced a redesigned handheld model that succeeded, Sony did the same with the regular pad to dual shock transition and w/ slim PS2's. If Sony did reintroduce another controller w/ rumble, most likely they would bundle it with the PS3 and sell them while potentially discontinuing the "old" rumbleless controller to promote sales for rumble-featured controllers.
As always though on Digg, the title is so misleading (catered to drive-by diggers who don't even read the articles); the article when I read it had little to do about the rumble being problematic, it was more about the lawsuit that Immerson filed against Sony and how the rumble was affected by this suit--not about the battery life being problematic. The only time that the blogger even mentioned anything about the battery life was near the end where "Raoul" said it COULD be an issue, but will most likely be resolved by Sony "satisfactorily." So the blogger himself even said that it wasn't even an issue. This is a lot of what the gaming section in Digg is like: take one quote (negative/positve) out of a large article, make it the title and make it a much bigger issue than it actually is. If Xbox 360 does rumble+wireless fine, I'm sure PS3 will also considering that the current PS3 controllers have lithium ion batteries (used in most laptops) that already last a long time. The "title" on Digg is kind of like the cover on a book, in this sense, many diggers judge, almost literally, an article by its cover. - catharz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@heynow21: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fortnight
- napsack, on 10/11/2007, -6/+7"SixAxis: Motion sensors
360 controller: Rumble
Winner - 360
SixAxis- Lighter
360 controller - heavier
Winner - opinion. Though more people preferred the weight the 360 had, citing the PS3 controller is too light.
SixAxis - trigger buttons
360 controller - trigger buttons
Winner - 360's trigger buttons are more fluid and their range of motion allows for more inputs. To put that in an easier way, there is more variation to what type of input your giving based on how much you are pressing it, as opposed to Sony's."
In those three I fail to see how there is a "winner." It all depends on the users preference. It seemed to me that the votes were made purely out of fanboyism rather than concern over a product.
How does the 360 controller win simply because it has rumble?
How about lighter/heavier, that apparently received a comparable amount of votes.
Same with the triggers regardless of the system I like some fluidity in my triggers, but not too much. Maybe its due the fact that I like to play fighters and shooters. Sometimes smooth triggers have a dead zone and don't react quick enough to twitch reflexes.
Where did you see this poll? Any sources? You should know by now that on digg or anywhere online for that matter, you can't feed people numbers and expect them to eat it.
@ajajadude
damn you beat me to it heh - the2000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Even if Sony will offer all current consumers an upgrade of controllers, I will not replace mine. What I will do is buy a new one that has a vibrate function. Hell, I am okay with that idea but my controller stays with me...it's one of the authenticity that I did own one of the earliest PlayStation 3's...
