BREAKING: PS3 60 Gig Phase-Out ‘False’ Says SCEA

next-gen.biz — SCEA has denied 'inaccurate' reports that its $100 price cut on the 60Gig PS3 is simply a move to clear stock before offering solely the higher priced 80Gig version. See, I can do BREAKING too.

      If it is no longer in production then it will be JUST the new 80GB SKU for $600 once the 60GB SKU's runs out. The question is how many unsold 60GB SKU's are left? It is a phase out, they already stopped production, buried as inaccurate (The title is inaccurate).

Did the genius reporter at Joystiq ask if they were still manufacturing the 60 gig models? I bet they aren't and as per usual Sony spinster Tretton's comment mean that basically they have no plans to do anything until the 60 gigs that are on shelves sold. THEN THEY WILL DISCONTINUE IT.

And, for all we know, the 80GB could be $499 by the time to 60GB is gone. People have been so doom and gloom about this, but really, chances are it's not so bad regardless of what turns out to be the truth.

If they ever phase out the 60gb version, I'm certain they'll replace it with the 80gb version at $500. They'd really have to be high on crack to get rid of the $500 model at this point.

        obviously they cant talk about a second price drop so soon after the first one, but if you remember what a capcom exec sid the other day about a second price drop before the holidays, it makes sense.

        if you want a ps3, you should buy one now while you can get it cheap and with the EE anyways. if you were waiting for the drop to drop even cheaper, this doesnt affect you anyways.

    • Okari, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I am as well. If you want the best for your buck, the PS3 is the one. I only own a Wii, so don't go calling me a Sony fanboy. With the PS3 you get a blu-ray player, I don't care for HD, but it's nice to have. For the 360 you have to pay an extra $200 to get an HD player. With the PS3 you get an HDMI port, not sure if the Premium 360 has that yet. What's really making me lean to the PS3 side is the online play. Like unusualbob, I don't want to have to pay for online play because I'm not a huge online player, but I might want to play sometimes. There's also the Hard drive, 60GB in PS3, Premium 360 has 20GB. PS3 really seems like the better choice. I feel bad for being one of the anti-PS3 people now.

    I don't know what to believe..... sony has been so shady about the PS3 thus far... so many ppl have gotten fired from the ps3 teams. Nobody thought the 20 GB ps3 would have been cut from production. If they still had the 20 GB ps3 would you be able to buy it for 399? Because the other ones are now 499 and 599? I wish! They give a 100 dollar price cut on the 60 gb model, then they just release an 80 gb model at the same time, with a game. I mean come on we've all played that game at wal mart, best buy, and target, it gets old after a while :) I honestly wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they come out one day "the 60 gb sku hasn't been to popular and everybody needs the extra 20 GB! so we have decided to cut production on the lower class 60 GB model" Honestly they've been so shady!

    And now sony execs are saying that the ps3 is going to be the winner in march of 08? What's that tell all of us ps3 owners. that we've been ***** for 2 years, and thats how long i've had a blue ray player sitting in my room b4 this console is the winner.... i have a ps3, but come on sony....

    For example
    A 60 GB PS3 in Denmark cost about 926 USD.
    A premium costs around 500 USD.
    And the Wii costs about 407 USD.

    I know you can't compare two countries, but it is still incredible how big of a price difference there is.

    If I want 100% BC then I will use my PS2.

    If I want to have my games upscaled to 1080p I will deal with the software emulation on the PS3. Since Sony didn't magically enhance the EE on the PS3.

    That is one of the funniest points yet, people who upscale on the PS3 are already dealing with the software engine and bypassing the hardware. oh well much ado about nothing.

Even with bundled items, people look at price before anything else and that will help move more systems in the end. I was about to buy the 60gb online, but I think I'm going to wait a bit and see how they handle this.

The 80gb plus Motorstrom is just a transitional model while the 60gb's are still in stock. As much as Sony has faltered lately I highly highly doubt they would be the first company in history to drop the price and then raise it back up all within one month. (obviously sales and discounts not included)

    NOW its reported - by Sony - again that the price drop only applies to the limited supply of 60 GIG ps3's that are left, once they're gone, they're gone. And now Sony is once again denying their own statement. I see a trend here.
