BREAKING: PS3 60 Gig Phase-Out ‘False’ Says SCEA
next-gen.biz — SCEA has denied 'inaccurate' reports that its $100 price cut on the 60Gig PS3 is simply a move to clear stock before offering solely the higher priced 80Gig version. See, I can do BREAKING too.

Sony is trying to save face, they are phasing it out!
Digging my own article as inaccurate! - Wiinii, on 10/11/2007, -10/+19Here's proof they are phasing it out:

- Sniper, on 10/11/2007, -17/+3I'm amazed people actually think gamesindustry.biz is a credible source for information.
- RAT-Man, on 10/11/2007, -21/+15It had to be false. I never believed it. Jack Tretton, and everyone at Sony has seen how much sales of the 60GB sku have increased so they aren't going to PHASE them out in 18 or so days.
- BlackKnight6, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15You guys read the article?
"Nevertheless, Kaz Hirai himself says the one SKU strategy is the plan. He told Scandinavian website VGTV, "[We do not] have a 2 SKU strategy in the US, we learned very quickly customers respond better to having one SKU than two. We dropped the price on the 60GB model, as you know that model is no longer in production, once it's no longer on store shelves it will just be the $600 SKU."
If it is no longer in production then it will be JUST the new 80GB SKU for $600 once the 60GB SKU's runs out. The question is how many unsold 60GB SKU's are left? It is a phase out, they already stopped production, buried as inaccurate (The title is inaccurate). - arcthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3It's stupid that everyone was so quick to believe it. Whenever a Sony exec says something good, it's lies or PR spin, but when they say something bad it's the gospel truth.
Come on, people. Practice some discernment. - username9000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is more of a confirmation that the 60 gig is gone than anything!!!!!! Did the genius reporter at Joystiq ask if they were still manufacturing the 60 gig models? I bet they aren't and as per usual Sony spinster Tretton's comment mean that basically they have no plans to do anything until the 60 gigs that are on shelves sold. THEN THEY WILL DISCONTINUE IT.
- arcthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Okay, but even if it is a phase out, for all we know there could be 5 million of the things sitting around. And, for all we know, the 80GB could be $499 by the time to 60GB is gone. People have been so doom and gloom about this, but really, chances are it's not so bad regardless of what turns out to be the truth.
- BlackKnight6, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15You guys read the article?

- RooDoG, on 10/11/2007, -17/+20As I stated in the Original story. Why would you listen to the President of the European Market about American pricing? Good thing I waited for SCEA to make an announcement and falsify the initial reports....

- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Lying about what?
You need to stop calling Sony giving out information "lying".
The 60GB is $499. This is true.
The information also seems to say the 60Gb is discontinued soon. Seemingly also true.
Where's the lie?
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Lying about what?
- RoroCo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9The way he speaks you should write it like:

I guess being a good public speaker in not in the job requirements (along with experience in proper PR methods). - dagamer34, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4If only Kaz would give MS the same memo and kill off stupid SKUs (i.e. Core and even the Premium). This stupid market segmentation is BS when multiple price points create consumer confusing.
Meanwhile, the Wii and DS print money. I wonder who's laughing now?
- zeroiscariot, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11Of course they denied it. People SHOULD buy up all the 60GB ones now regardless of price mockery, before they switch over to software emulation for PS2 backwards compatibility.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3What the hell? If understand it right, ALL EU models have sotware emulation.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -11/+5I hope this is true. I really want a $500 60GB model. I got SO PISSED OFF when I read the other news saying that they were phasing this model out. I really hope this is true, or else, ***** sony, and ***** THEM BADLY.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7Settle, the story wasn't true, they are not phasing out the $500 ps3, and I don't think they ever will. If they ever phase out the 60gb version, I'm certain they'll replace it with the 80gb version at $500. They'd really have to be high on crack to get rid of the $500 model at this point.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1But if it's true that the supplier (whoever they are, Seagate?) are not making 60gig HDs, then the little bitches will phase out the 60G model.

- apoc06, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1there are 3-4 million 60g ps3s out in the wild. i highly doubt that ony will sell 3-4 million consoles in the next month. when the supply finally dies out, who is to say that the 80g wont replace the 60g at the same price?
obviously they cant talk about a second price drop so soon after the first one, but if you remember what a capcom exec sid the other day about a second price drop before the holidays, it makes sense.
if you want a ps3, you should buy one now while you can get it cheap and with the EE anyways. if you were waiting for the drop to drop even cheaper, this doesnt affect you anyways.

- 1jaxstate1, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9See, now I'm on the fence again on whether to by a PS3 or 360.
- unusualbob, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13well if you plan on a 360, you might want to either get an elite system or wait for 3-5 months while the stock of defective consoles is depleted.
My PS3 is sweet, i Dont play my 360 much. I dont want to pay for xbox live. - Okari, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I am as well. If you want the best for your buck, the PS3 is the one. I only own a Wii, so don't go calling me a Sony fanboy. With the PS3 you get a blu-ray player, I don't care for HD, but it's nice to have. For the 360 you have to pay an extra $200 to get an HD player. With the PS3 you get an HDMI port, not sure if the Premium 360 has that yet. What's really making me lean to the PS3 side is the online play. Like unusualbob, I don't want to have to pay for online play because I'm not a huge online player, but I might want to play sometimes. There's also the Hard drive, 60GB in PS3, Premium 360 has 20GB. PS3 really seems like the better choice. I feel bad for being one of the anti-PS3 people now.
- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@Okari Actually HD-DVD is about dead, so with the X360 you really don't have an option for HD at all.
- jonnyeh, on 10/11/2007, -7/+23 reasons to get a 360: Bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo 3.
That is a pretty impressive line up of AAA titles for just one season, and I mean AAA.
The PS3 is a sinking ship. Sony can't do anything right.- harreola, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3You forgot reason #4: so you can keep sending in your unit to get serviced because of how defective it is.
- apoc06, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3bioshock and mass effect are unproven franchises.
dont get me wrong, im looking forward to mass effect myself, but to call them AAA before they are even released is a stretch.
thats just like calling heavenly sword, lair, uncharted, etc. all AAA franchises as well.

- jjsaw5, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3you would think that after people post articles about this every 30 seconds that we would get it.....
apparently people still feel the need to post stories about the same topic over and over and over...its not like its any different either its the same thing every time
thank but i got the message from the 1st 10 posts - colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -2/+34From the same article:

- username9000, on 10/11/2007, -7/+21Hahaha. Sony fanboys.
This is even more confirmation that the 60 gig is gone. No one asked Tretton if the 60 was going to be manufactured anymore. That's right, Sony spin as per usual. There are no plans to get rid of the 60 gig.....UNTIL THEY ARE OUT OF ***** STOCK.- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2And then they will drop the 80gb + game bundle and sell the 80gb alone for $499 so whats the problem?
- JimSwarthow, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16so am I the only one scratching their heads about Sony asking $100 more for just 20gig's more of storage??

- celkin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You're scratching other people's heads?
- Omega5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12it seems to me that Kaz confirms that it will be back up at $599 once 60GB phases out? Or did I miss something? The article seems to contradict the title.
- crgnetworks, on 10/11/2007, -15/+3I WILL PEE IN YOUR BUTT FOR SAYING THIS STORY IS BREAKING WHEN ITS NOT.
BEND OVER!- pennyroyal, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1hahahaha
- lpmiller, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12To bad no one is really reading what is being said. There is no denial here that the 60gb version will not be phased out, just that there is plenty of inventory. Well duh, no one is buying the damn things.
And geez, enough with the breaking already. This is NOT CNN.- Wiinii, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I thought some of you were smarter than that. I purposely put BREAKING in the title and then said "See, I can do BREAKING too." poking fun at the BREAKING in the original article.
- m4ttjirM, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5They also denied the price cut itself for weeks and weeks so I don't know what to believe.
I don't know what to believe..... sony has been so shady about the PS3 thus far... so many ppl have gotten fired from the ps3 teams. Nobody thought the 20 GB ps3 would have been cut from production. If they still had the 20 GB ps3 would you be able to buy it for 399? Because the other ones are now 499 and 599? I wish! They give a 100 dollar price cut on the 60 gb model, then they just release an 80 gb model at the same time, with a game. I mean come on we've all played that game at wal mart, best buy, and target, it gets old after a while :) I honestly wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they come out one day "the 60 gb sku hasn't been to popular and everybody needs the extra 20 GB! so we have decided to cut production on the lower class 60 GB model" Honestly they've been so shady!
And now sony execs are saying that the ps3 is going to be the winner in march of 08? What's that tell all of us ps3 owners. that we've been ***** for 2 years, and thats how long i've had a blue ray player sitting in my room b4 this console is the winner.... i have a ps3, but come on sony....- eryximachus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0It's not shady. They are just trying to avoid the Osborne effect.
- kkthxbye, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1All these price drops makes it even more sad to be here in Denmark. The price drops arrive months later and the prices on the consoles are a lot higher.
For example
A 60 GB PS3 in Denmark cost about 926 USD.
A premium costs around 500 USD.
And the Wii costs about 407 USD.
I know you can't compare two countries, but it is still incredible how big of a price difference there is. - ChrisB187, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Much ado about nothing.
If I want 100% BC then I will use my PS2.
If I want to have my games upscaled to 1080p I will deal with the software emulation on the PS3. Since Sony didn't magically enhance the EE on the PS3.
That is one of the funniest points yet, people who upscale on the PS3 are already dealing with the software engine and bypassing the hardware. oh well much ado about nothing.- pennyroyal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0that's shakespeare. you're one of dem intellectual types, ain't ya. we don't like yo kind 'round heere no mo', nawt afta' 'dat tomfoolery yo' hudlums b' pullin' whatwhiff 'dem shootangs for 'dem Pee Ess Thrays and makin fun o' ol' dubya.

- Jaysunli, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Totally inaccurate, the video which has been posted in here about five times already, confirms it.
"Fanboy" or not, there is no denying that it is fact. - tashpool, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12It's not false or true, it's conflicting reports from different managers. Personally, I think they need a cheaper system. Even with bundled items, people look at price before anything else and that will help move more systems in the end. I was about to buy the 60gb online, but I think I'm going to wait a bit and see how they handle this.

- gutterboy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6There will be a 499$ model from now on. It will likely just be the 80gb model. The 80gb plus Motorstrom is just a transitional model while the 60gb's are still in stock. As much as Sony has faltered lately I highly highly doubt they would be the first company in history to drop the price and then raise it back up all within one month. I'll take that $100 I saved buying one now and spend it on a 500gig hd to put in the PS3 since Sony lets us change them out.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Huh... 500GB laptop hard drives, that's new to me.
- bj00rn, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Well, Kaz confirmed the phase out, and that the 80GB SKU will be the only SKU, and at 599. So I'm sorry but I have to bury your story as inaccurate.
- pennyroyal, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2i don't understand what difference it makes if they're discontinuing the 60gb model. go out and get one for cheaper while you have the chance, if you want one. or cough up the same amount you typically would for an extra 20 gigs.
but i'd be pissed if i were one of the first to have bought the 60. now that's a jip. - MISDIREK7ED, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4"See, I can do BREAKING too"
Until you can go from a flair to a headspin... I don't believe you.- Misanthrope, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Just shut up.
My god... - Wiinii, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I thought some of you were smarter than that. I purposely put BREAKING in the title and then said "See, I can do BREAKING too." poking fun at the BREAKING in the original article.
- MISDIREK7ED, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You're both about as fun as a wet mop.. calm down.
- Misanthrope, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Just shut up.
- manbear, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7The reason why they don't see stock running out very soon, is because no one has frickin' been buying them. The 60GB will be X'ed, but this only happens when buyers will actually purchase all of their current stock.
- MWeather, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Where did you get the idea it isn't selling well? It's been selling just as well as the 360 did at this point after launch.
- ausfahrt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1that is true and sales went way up after the price cut. I read like 2900% on amazon.
- CrownSeven, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5So let me get this straight. First its reported by sony that a 100 dollar price drop was coming - which they denied right away, then lo and behold, we have a price drop.
NOW its reported - by Sony - again that the price drop only applies to the limited supply of 60 GIG ps3's that are left, once they're gone, they're gone. And now Sony is once again denying their own statement. I see a trend here.- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/07/13/another-e3-winding-down-plus-a-quick-clarification/
Deny what? It says they have enough on hand. It doesn't say they're still making it.
You're putting words into Sony's mouth and saying they're lies.
Stick with what they actually said and not put your own beliefs and you'll see things with a lot less contradictions.
