- wedges, on 03/04/2009, -3/+44there's a very good reason for that: poor people.
i'm being completely serious. most digg users probably fall into innovators and early adopters, who purchase these systems early in the life cycle. most ps3 and 360 purchases at this point are early majority. but the PS2 is well into late majority and laggards, which includes lower income households and much more casual gamers. PS2 is so cheap and plentiful, and the games are so cheap and plentiful, it makes much more sense for lower income families to jump into gaming. - spoiled1, on 03/04/2009, -2/+36There are about 50 million PS2s in US alone
- wedges, on 03/04/2009, -5/+34don't let it bum you out: your ps3 will outsell ps4 for the first few years of that system.
- FacePuncher, on 03/04/2009, -7/+27So.....why was backwards compatibility removed from the ps3 again?
- kierucom, on 03/04/2009, -3/+21The PS2 racked in 284 million, the PS3 got them 241 million... it's not exactly like the PS2 just went miles above and beyond the PS3 in sales. Considering the low sales of the PS3 console in general; generating 241 million in revenue on games for it seems rather respectable.
Source: http://kotaku.com/5161882/so-which-console-is-butt ... - nickert0n, on 03/04/2009, -3/+19All of you fanboys say the PS3 has no games?
Doing a check online, there are currently ~587 360360 games (released and known to be upcoming) and ~442 PS3 (same). Of these, 360 has 27.6% exclusives and PS3 has 24.2% exclusives. Pretty close. If you avg how many games released per year that is, 360 has an avg of 196 games/year and PS3 has 221 games/year.
Can someone tell me WHERE PS3 is lacking in games/exclusives? They NEED 3% more exclusives to be competitive? C'mon!
I have a PS3, 360, PS2, Wii, PSP, DS.
I play my PS3 the most, what I love about the PS3 is quality games. These people that say "I dont want to play anything on the PS3" are people who already bought a 360 and dont want to like a PS3 because they cant afford it.
Killzone 2 - BEST FPS ever w/ Best Online expierence
Little Big Planet - Best Platformer Ever
Warhawk
Metal Gear Solid 4 - Best Tactical Game\Story in a Game Ever
Resistance 2
GranTurismo 5
Rachet n Clank
Plus Multiplatform titles like Burnout Paradise that were designed on the PS3 and then was ported over to the 360 (360 version has ***** graphics and framerate issues)
Point is, Please people shut the ***** up just because you dont have one. I have them all and im telling you the PS3 is my and everyone in my house's favorite. It gets played the most, it has the best games (Quality over Quantity) And so many other features I like bettter, free online, yada yada yada I could go on forever, I loved my 360 it was a great machine aswell but im sorry you fanboys just because some of us like a different flavor of ice cream doesnt mean you have to hate, thats sympoms of jealousy and is quite embarrassing. End the console fanboyism. - danwallace, on 03/04/2009, -0/+14That didn't even make sense.
- funkeepickle, on 03/04/2009, -3/+16Lack of games? It's not 2007 anymore, the ps3 has a ton of great exclusives. Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, MGS4, LittleBigPlanet, Valkyria Chronicles, and Killzone 2 are the cream of the crop, but there are also many decent exclusives like the Resistance series, Warhawk, Motorstorm series, Folklore, MLB: The Show, along with many others. The 2009 lineup is also looking great for the ps3. Tell your friends to pay more attention.
- inactive, on 03/04/2009, -43/+55everyone sells more than the ps3
- vofuse, on 03/04/2009, -6/+17As a PS3 owner, figures like this continuously bum me out ... but I still love my console and wouldn't trade it for another. I just hope it has a decent lifespan.
- nerdherder, on 03/04/2009, -3/+14I was wondering where they were making money. The PS2 will have to keep earning profits for them until the PS3 finally takes off, which it should down the road with a price drop and larger game library.
- specialK16, on 03/04/2009, -2/+13Don't waste your breath. This moronic Xbots will do anything to to prove you wrong.
- xsecretfiles, on 03/04/2009, -1/+11what a coincidence! I just got a new PS3 and a 360
- Charlotte_Web, on 03/04/2009, -0/+10Homeless men have PS3's?
- FredFredrickson, on 03/04/2009, -14/+23How is that trolling? It's true.
- BobMysterioso, on 03/04/2009, -2/+11Cost.
- wedges, on 03/04/2009, -0/+8WoW counts as gaming, but 1 game can't save a platform. WoW is profitable, but are other games?
- Borgcube, on 03/04/2009, -1/+9@wedges
Oh, that makes loads of sense. Just like N64 outsold Gamecube 3 years after Gamecube came out, or how Gamecube is still outselling Nintendo Wii, or how Xbox outsold 360 3 years after THAT came out....
Wait... - mkmega, on 03/04/2009, -0/+8The list of great games on the PS2 is massive.
I still haven't finished or purchased all the PS2 games I want - working on it though. - wedges, on 03/04/2009, -1/+81 game doesn't constitute "PC Gaming", especially when it can played on consumer grade hardware.
- bblande, on 03/04/2009, -2/+9Buried for Captain Obvious observations. There's what--10x more PS2s around?
- danwallace, on 03/04/2009, -4/+11Sony is awesome for still supporting development for the PS2. It certainly affected my decision about buying 360 or PS3. Why would I want to buy an Xbox knowing that they'll just discontinue it as soon as they pump out the next gen system? I can't afford launch systems and it's usually wise to wait until all the launch-era problems are resolved before committing to a console purchase. In the mean time, I'd like to have new games to play.
- Lionhart, on 03/04/2009, -1/+8It's Activision-Blizzard.
- liquisoft, on 03/04/2009, -14/+21Target still has a whole section devoted to the PS2. Actually, the PS2 section and the PS3 section are identical in size and share a side of an aisle, while the Xbox 360 and Wii sections get their own whole sides of aisles.
In a way it goes to show the massive fail of the PS3, in terms of marketing. Sony hasn't made it the "must have" upgrade like Microsoft and Nintendo have with their consoles. As such, people are still perfectly happy with their PS2s and will probably continue enjoying them for years to come. - kierucom, on 03/04/2009, -1/+8Any Xbot posting in this thread ought to see how much money Activision made off the XBox. The answer? 1 million.
- KrustyTClown, on 03/05/2009, -1/+8ooh look I can do it too!!! Xbox 360 is a overheating POS that has no good games for it. No matter what you say or do, no matter what proof you show the 360 will always be a failure. GALO 3 is overhyped and has nothing going for it.
Grow up kid and stop hiding from the truth. You were suckered by Bill Gates. HA HA!!! - KrustyTClown, on 03/05/2009, -1/+8PS3 is doing Worse? Did I not just show that Sony has sold more PS3s in the same time span as the 360. Who is the blind one here?
- KnightMareInc, on 03/04/2009, -4/+11same ***** different name
- KrustyTClown, on 03/05/2009, -1/+8You ask that question as if it is a fact that every gamer owns a 360. WTF kind of comeback is that anyway? I'm not TRYING to tell you that the PS3 has sold better. I AM TELLING you and presenting you with the facts. You continue to refute by going uh.. lol 360 has better online and games.
Stop living in 2007 its 2009.
I got news for you. PS3 has your precious Bioshock and is getting Mass Effect.
KZ2 is Better than Halo (IMO)
No MGS4 ON 360
No LBP ON 360
Warhawk> any 360 online game
Resistance 2 online not on 360
Socom (issues were patched) not on 360
Multiplatform games perform better on PS3 nowadays
But hey, you got three games that I can get when they come to PC, HALO 3, GEOW2, Fable 2. And Fable 2 is the only one I want. - seriousgoat, on 03/04/2009, -3/+10You are wrong. You are mistakenly assuming that people that own PS2s are taking the market share of PS3s only. People that are buying PS2s can't afford 360s or Wiis either.
If Nintendo and Microsoft were so great at marketing their consoles as "must haves" then people wouldn't be playing PS2s either. - paulvq, on 03/04/2009, -4/+11I'm seriously asking this, but what real cost is there? There were only a few models using hardware-based backward compatibility, and the rest were using software-emulation. Were there licensing issues or something?
- bigteebo, on 03/04/2009, -1/+7It's too bad they removed BC since they could have included a voucher for several free PS2 games(just like they did with blu-ray titles) with the purchase of a PS3. It clears out old stock + gives it a little bit more value.
- KrustyTClown, on 03/05/2009, -2/+8Sorry, I thought you would understand simple mathematics.
360 @ 4 Years= 28 mil - 28/4=7 mil per year
PS3 @ 3 Years= 23 mil - 23/3=7.67 Per year
I know the truth hurts. Price drop on the way too. WOW - KrustyTClown, on 03/05/2009, -2/+8Wow, you mean to tell me games sell better on the system that has been out a whole year longer? Thats common sense.
- Dagolith, on 03/04/2009, -3/+9I'm all for PC gaming, but not because of crap like WoW.
- wedges, on 03/04/2009, -8/+14actually it's not a "massive fail," it's called a product life cycle. rich people get it at first, then everyone does. once the ps4 and xbox720 come out, ps3 and 360 will still outsell both of those, simply because they will be cheaper and more plentiful.
- daridave, on 03/04/2009, -0/+6Well, they really do.
and this further proves it's not the hardware, it's the developers ... - CoD4, on 03/04/2009, -0/+5hell, i'm still playing shadow of the colossus, shinobi, mk trilogy (just bought), and alpha trilogy (just bought)
- KrustyTClown, on 03/05/2009, -2/+7But its not true. Really I don't know why he was dugg up for an incorrect statement. 360 has been out for a full year before the PS3. Also consider it had no next gen competition for a full year. Sony comes out a full year later and lot more expensive but somehow they are only 5 million units behind in sales. This alone tells me the PS3 has out sold 360 on a Worldwide scale. This is not an opinion but a fact.
I'm not going to look it up right now but the I think the latest was,
PS3= 23 Million
360=28 Million - KenDigg, on 03/04/2009, -4/+9"In a way it goes to show the massive fail of the PS3, in terms of marketing. "
No, it shows that the amount of shovelware for the 360 and Wii take up more space. Our local Gamestop even has the Burger King titles in their 360 section. More shovelware = more display space needed. - dandonia, on 03/05/2009, -0/+5You don't deserve such a machine. The day I bought my 80 the store clerk said the same thing. I offered him out right to swap giving him a new machine with a bigger drive and he turned me down out right. I even offered to drop in a 500 GB drive for him - damn you Sony backing down to public pressure.
- nickert0n, on 03/05/2009, -0/+5You have fun on your OLPC in Mogidushu while I go play some Killzone 2 online.
- dandonia, on 03/05/2009, -1/+6Not to get into list wars or anything but are you sure that statement is true? We haven't even heard the 360 line up yet.
- dandonia, on 03/05/2009, -0/+5Not to mention the games library that could have been put on PSN for PS3 users to download. Sony missed out on a lot of profit by bowing to public pressure.
- username9000, on 03/04/2009, -11/+15lmao @ mywhitenoise and darksoul calling other people trolls.
- CoD4, on 03/04/2009, -4/+8rofl, keep telling yourself that and go upload some ***** videos from galo
- dandonia, on 03/05/2009, -3/+7Lol, I can't believe people still say it hasn't taken off. They have sold over 21 million units (by December) in two years at a price point double the opponents who even with a full year of no competition have reportedly sold less than 30 million units. The PS3 turns 2 for all but 2 countries in a week or so. While the 360 is 3 and a half.
Gotta love how this time last year when Microsoft had sold 21 million units that people were giving them major props for kicking Sony's ass but when Sony reach that number in faster time its "they haven't and will not take off".
More to the point - what a ***** article.
"On the flipside, PlayStation sold the least amount of console product for the gaming giant, underscoring the stark role reversal of Nintendo and Sony in just three years"
NO it really didn't. The following are from the Kotaku post that this ***** article was written about.
Playstation Division = 525 + unknown share of 237 handhelds
Nintendo Division = 407 + unknown share of 237 handhelds
Xbox Division = 362
Can someone explain to me how that translates to the Playstaion brand selling least amount of console products for activision. Even if Nintendo claimed all 237 hand helds (which is ridicules) it would still put Sony second not third. If Nintendo took 160 of the 237 it would still put Playstation at the top of the pack. - JigoroKano, on 03/04/2009, -2/+6You can't publish without the consent of the console manufacturer. They must license the game.
The only other alternative is to reverse engineer the console and sell unlicensed games. I haven't seen this done since the Sega Genesis. - nwoolls, on 03/04/2009, -0/+4@ paulvq - the software-based emulation still used hardware from the PS2. There were two components in the all hardware-based emulation in the early PS3. Then one of those was removed and replaced by software. Now there is no emulation at all.
As to the countless people who cry for the emulation and lambaste Sony for removing it - where were you when those systems were available? I bought mine. Companies make decisions based on profit. If nobody bought the models with ps2 emulation because they are too expensive, guess what Sony is going to do? It's not rocket science... - JigoroKano, on 03/04/2009, -0/+4You've twisted your argument but you are still wrong. The company can stop giving out developer licenses and they do. Try getting one for the regular XBox, you can't. You can only get a license for the 360.
