- keviniskool, on 06/19/2009, -13/+98They won't do anything. Move along.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/19/2009, -17/+98Yeah, right. Activision may be worse than EA. They love their money, they'd be stupid to drop support.
Wouldn't matter to me, their games suck balls. - DanteDefiance, on 06/19/2009, -4/+76Oh no! Now we won't get to experience Guitar Hero 5!!
Oh wait...
*continues playing Guitar Hero 3* - mrdeadhead, on 06/19/2009, -1/+56but they're the lovable company that bought WoW so they can now legally piss gold dollars.
- DanteDefiance, on 06/19/2009, -4/+57Has Activition done ANYTHING original in the past 5 years? All they do is whore the ***** Guitar Hero franchise, which has changed much since Guitar Hero 2. And NO the RockBand rip off World Tour doesn't count.
I hated them enough for dropping Brutal Legend (which looks awesome, but would you expect anything less from Tim Shafer? ), then actually SUING EA for picking the game up.
***** those *****. - Nephlabobo, on 06/19/2009, -27/+76***** Activision and Bobby Kotick.
- SirTheGuy, on 06/19/2009, -6/+54This makes me incredibly sad because Blizzard, one of the (very) few good guys in the gaming industry, is being forced to do some awful things because of their parent company; this is making them look very bad...I couldn't care less about the carbon-copy games Activision vomits forth, but don't make your good developers go down with you. Last company that tried this (EA) got hit with a backlash so hard they are still attempting to recover from it
- yocouchdigga, on 06/19/2009, -7/+48BLOW IT OUT YOUR ASS, Activision.
- mrdeadhead, on 06/19/2009, -6/+42let's just hope Sony doesn't cave to idle threats, if they did it would set activision up to completely destroy the gaming industry
- theOPIATE, on 06/19/2009, -5/+37That guy sounds (and looks) like a douchebag.
- NeoTechni, on 06/20/2009, -9/+41"Consumers: We want homebrew!
Microsoft: Here's the SDK for XNA! Go make some games!
Sony: ***** you."
Sony let us install Linux from day 1. So it's more like
Consumers: We want homebrew!
Microsoft: Here's the SDK to make games in c sharp, but you have no access to the internet in your games
Sony: Here's an OS to make games in whatever you want
Consumers: We want a SKU withOUT BluRay, so we can't play PS3 games
Microsoft: Well since our system doesn't play PS3 games, sure!
Sony: Are you retarded? You do know ALL PS3 games come on bluray right?
Consumers: We want a SKU with BluRay
Microsoft: ***** off.
Sony: Done.
Consumers: We want backwards compatibility!
Microsoft: We'll only let you play the games that sold well
Sony: We'll give you perfect BC.
Shortly after. Consumers: We want it to be cheaper or we aren't buying!
Sony: The only things we can remove to make it cheaper are 2 USB ports, the flash card slots, and BC, but ok - stoanhart, on 06/19/2009, -4/+35But they changed the colors and stuff!!!
- KrustyTClown, on 06/19/2009, -19/+46I own both COD4 and KILLZONE 2. KILLZONE 2 is the better game. I rarely play cod4 anymore. I usually split it up between KZ2, SOCOM and Warhawk. Sony is really putting out quality exclusives right now, they are making their own games which is good because Microsoft can never take them the way they did early in the PS3 life cycle. If Sony would just lower the price then they would be selling fine. I expect Sony to do better with their next console if they create a fanbase with their new games and keep the pricing competative.
In no way does COD trounce KZ2, they are very similiar except KZ2 has better multiplayer, graphics and sound. You're whole existance on DIGG has been anti PS3 just like PUFT. Atleast I can admit I would have bought a 360 if it wasn't for the RROD.
If Microsoft puts out quality hardware next time, then I will own both. Right now I have a Wii and a PS3 but I refuse to pay for that POS 360. - Ddragonaaa, on 06/21/2009, -2/+29He just wants Sony to drop the price by $100 so people will use that to buy another $100 worth of crappy peripherals from Activision.
- Chewie67, on 06/20/2009, -7/+33Exactly. This is grandstanding and nothing more.
By most accounts, Sony has the strongest game lineup of this year. Jumping ship from the PS3 now ridiculously foolish. - smoothmann, on 06/20/2009, -8/+31*cough* ***** PUSSY JUST RUNNING HIS MOUTH *cough*
- inactive, on 06/20/2009, -4/+26Bobby Kotick expert douchenozzle.
- maley, on 06/21/2009, -2/+22Anyone that actually believes Activision would pull support has been drinking too much of the Balmer kool-aid.
- phosphor112, on 06/21/2009, -6/+24over 50% of Activision's revenue comes from Sony.
PS3, PSP, and PS2, all have Activision games. If Kotick decided to drop PS3, Sony could trump their hand of cards by dropping them completely. Both would hurt, but Activision would hurt more becuase half of their sales are gone. They would come back begging.
PS2 has the largest install base out of any video game console. Heh..drop a Sony product? That's just stupid. - specialK16, on 06/19/2009, -5/+23Don't feed the trolls.
- dandd20006, on 06/21/2009, -2/+20In reality what is most likely to happen is that big franchises such as Guitar Hero and Call of Duty will see releases on Sony's platforms, but new IPs and smaller releases won't.
The catch is what if one of these new IPs really catches on and becomes a big new franchise. Now of course "new franchise X" might see sequels on the PS3, but if the 360 can exclusively get the new/better GH or COD, that will be detrimental to Sony.
I know everyone wants to dismiss AVs threats, but they are the biggest 3rd party publisher and are perfectly capable of causing damage to a console if the chose to do so.
(I'm not stupid and suspect as most of you do that this is mostly hot air, but I'm willing to bet that Sony is taking this more seriously than 99% of the people on digg are.) - mywhitenoise, on 06/19/2009, -12/+29Yup....it's a good thing I can use a mouse and keyboard on my PS3, or the FragFX controller. Do yourself a favor and just shut the ***** up.
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -1/+18Sounds like the most painful fun I can think of.
- whateverHeSaid, on 06/20/2009, -7/+24Alright, Krusty! You made username9000 cry. My hat is off to you sir. Keep up the good work!
- doshindude, on 06/19/2009, -7/+22Why are you even playing a Guitar Hero game? Rock Band is far superior.
- Aooogah, on 06/21/2009, -2/+16I don't know, Kotick is pretty foolish. This is the guy who turned a company that most people were ambivalent about into one of the most vilified companies in the industry.
- Topher06, on 06/21/2009, -8/+22Any company that is going to ignore an install base of 23 million PS3 owners and nearly 50 million PSP owners is run by a bunch of *****, period.
Seriously, this assumption that Sony is doing poorly in this genreation of game consoles is an ignorant troll statement propegated by online blogs sponsored by Microsoft and their shills. Sony lags the Xbox360 by 6 - 8 million units depending on your source and so many people seem to forget that the X360 sold about 5 - 6 million units in the first 12 months PRIOR to the PS3 being released. Meaning the that PS3 sales have sayed mostly on par with Xbox360 sales given the same time period (the gap between them has never greatly exceeded the head start sales of the X360). This is in spite of the perception of failure and the supposedly excessive price tag (i.e. the same amount of people over the same time period bought a PS3 at a higher price and lower perception of success as people that bought the X360 which has a higher perception of success and lower price tag). Microsoft should thank Sony for keeping the price of the PS3 high as I am sure that after another price drop (or hardware refresh such as a slim unit), the gap between the PS3 and X360 will shrink dramatically. Also is the fact that nearly 120 million people own a PS2 and they are waiting for the right time to get a PS3. Any company not realizing that the PS3 is still a largely untapped growing market, not topping its maximum like the Wii or X360 is just not doing their market research. And I am not comparing to the Wii because Nintendo has proven if they sell ***** on a stick people will buy it regardless.
If a company wants to ignore an install base of nearly 75 million people siting that the platform has to improve for it to continue to support it then that is just a retarded statement made by ignorant CEO's that have no idea what they are doing anyways. How about the 130 million or so PS2 owners out there? If I were Sony I would counter by revoking Activision's licensing for supporting the PS2 platform. Seriously, Sony doesn't make much money off of Activision selling games for the PS2. At this point every sale of a game is nearly pure profit for Activision as the game engines used to make PS2 games are mature and well tested. There is hardly no overhead in making a PS2 game, yet they still sell for around $40. Dust off an old game, make some new content, and re-release it for a quick turn around on profit. I am sure Activision would quiver and piss themselves at the idea of losing the PS2 install base. Remember that for ACTIVELY selling platforms, Sony has the largest install base, period.
Really this is all about Activision not making enough great games for the PS3 community to get excited about them. Sure the CoD series and Guitar Hero are popular franchises on any platform (and so the sell well on ALL platforms), but the line up of Activision PS3 games are pretty dismal with lots of bad movie tie ins and rehashes of old played out franchises like FEAR and Quake. Bascially Activision applies a sales model that relies on the fact that the more people you have on a game platform the more opportunity there is of making a decent profit IN SPITE of the quality of the game. Its all about quantity, not quality, when it comes to companies like EA and Activision. If these companies focused on making quality games then they would find an install base of 23 million people large enough for themto make a decent profit. Make a great game and even 5 million people would be a large enough install base (such as the iPhone platform). But when less then 1% of gamers are interested in a TimeShift, sure, 23 million people is not enough to turn a good profit, but neither is 30 million, nor 50 million, nor 100 million, as TimeShift sucks donkey balls and nobody wanted that game.
Activision is crying because they can't sell enough ***** games on the PS3 to make money, period. I applaude the PS3 community for ignoring Activision garbage and holding out for quality games. The entire PS3 platform focuses on quality and the games that sell well echo this. Personally I would not regret Activision pulling out of supporting the PS3 with the rare exception of not having any new CoD games. I can get my air quitar fix with Rockband anyways. - aaabbbsss, on 06/20/2009, -4/+17It's a shame a company like Activision had to come along and taint Blizzard, who actually cares about its games.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/21/2009, -4/+16I don't really see the PS3 losing momentum. Unlike the Wii or 360, it actually has an interesting games line up for the next year or two.
Notice also he doesn't deny that the Playstation generates returns... so he's basically complaining that, while they make money, they sure would like to make MORE money on PS3 like the do on the XBox.
I don't get his point at all. Of course the XBox generates better returns. There are more people with XBoxs. Of course you'd like to make more money.
It sounds like this guy really just enjoys the sound of his own voice. - Ajajadude, on 06/20/2009, -5/+17They look like whiny little bitches who only want to deal with consoles that are familiar to them. They sound like every other dev sounded like when the PS3 first came out. The fact that they're having a hissy fit now tells me they're trying to pressure Sony into giving them whatever they want.
And because of that, I'm considering not buying the new Call of Duty and avoiding Activision games altogether for the foreseeable future. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Cutting their products off from a console to try and force a company to bow to their will is a dick move that many people won't be amused with. - joeleslie, on 06/20/2009, -4/+15Of course they won't, Activision like money.
- Zanuff, on 06/21/2009, -3/+14"When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console—and the PSP [portable] too.”"
Doesn't the second P in PSP stand for Portable already? - Inverno, on 06/21/2009, -1/+11I was a bit skeptical about this number, so I looked up Activision's 2008 10-K. here's the breakdown:
Sony: 1,030,045,000 (largely from PS2.)
Xbox: 785,476,000
Wii: 309,867,000
PC: 156,068,000
Other (handhelds and such, it's not broken down): 4,411,000
So, while Sony doesn't do OVER 50%, they're damn close. - bakaoni, on 06/21/2009, -3/+12I hope that the reason your post sucks so bad is that you txt'd it from your cellphone with a numeric keypad.
- bigbadgoat, on 06/21/2009, -5/+14no one spends $400-$500 to put something in their closet to collect dust just to say that they own one.
If you actually do, please castrate yourself before you pass your genes on. - NipGrip, on 06/21/2009, -3/+12Oh no! No Activison PSP games?? What will I do without Pimp My Ride or the next redneck hunting game that blows? Why on Earth he even tossed the PSP into the mix when regarding the PS3 price point is beyond me. Anyhow, back to Rock Band. ***** Activision and ***** Guitar Hero and the horse both of them rode in on.
- WaSSaBi, on 06/21/2009, -3/+10they're not building games on the PS3 from the ground up... they make it for either the PS3 or Xbox and then port them... porting is a great deal load cheaper than creating a game from the ground up and it also opens up their game to a wider range of users... Lets see here...
Develop a game just for the Xbox = Max Sales of 31 million...
Develop a games on the Xbox and PS3 = Max sales of 54 million
Gives you a wider install base than the Wii which has about 50 million right now..
If their goal is profit maximization than not supporting the PS3 is the wrong thing to do... - SOS84, on 06/21/2009, -2/+9You do realize that Sony and Microsoft's licensing charge is exactly the same don't you?
- tymme, on 06/21/2009, -1/+8And, unfortunately, just like with EA, 500 people will bitch and complain and boycott while 5,000,000 go out and buy the latest installment and all DLC for it...
- Abno, on 06/21/2009, -0/+6I think Infinity Ward uses parallel development techniques instead of ports, and I remember interviews where they said they didn't have much problem at all developing on PS3 when they made CoD4.
- bigbadgoat, on 06/21/2009, -2/+8Yeah, 23 million consoles world-wide is hardly a viable market to produce games for. It's only selling about 20% better than the 360 since launch. It's selling horribly.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/21/2009, -3/+9"So it's either Sony lowers the price on this puppy or they ignore the idle threats of one of the biggest 3rd party publishers on the market, and friends not selling COD to an entire platform is a big loss, Cheers."
*fixd
Really, though. Are you suggesting the PS3 COD didn't make money? I'd be willing to bet a lot that it did, and, that being the case, this is just a stupid and idle threat. It doesn't even make sense. "Hey! Developing for your system is profitable, but we want it to be MORE profitable! You need to give up some of YOUR profits so that we can make more, OR ELSE we'll CUT our profits by refusing to develop for your system at all! HAH!"
It's idiotic. Sony should take the high road and ignore this jackass. Allow him a bit of time to think about what an ass he is making of himself. - Abno, on 06/21/2009, -6/+11Username9000 is getting upset again. Such a sensitive troll, that one.
- NeoTechni, on 06/21/2009, -4/+9"How's that PS3 homebrew scene coming along huh?"
PS3 doesn't need a PS3-specific homebrew scene cause it runs an OS.
"Yeah...didn't think"
Yeah, I know you didn't think. - edwadokun, on 06/21/2009, -2/+7hahahaha yeah right... thats like hundreds of millions lost right there.. thats like maxis saying 'we're not gonna make games for the pc anymore' if they do this, their stock will plummet even lower than it is now and thousands of lay offs.. anyone w/ a brain can see through this bluff
- computrius, on 06/22/2009, -2/+7"I suggest you actually read my posts before you sound off like a ***** idiot." Says the person who is foaming at the mouth and saying nothing significant short of "*****".
- kibbledbits, on 06/21/2009, -5/+9very nice post, and accurate: http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php
Chart shows that PS3 is actually ahead of 360 since inception (comparing 1st year to 1st year, etc) - SteveMax, on 06/22/2009, -1/+5Unfortunately, you can't access the GPU under Linux, therefore the possibilities aren't as big as they could be. Even something as simple as Compiz won't work on the PS3, never mind complex Linux 3D games.
- lostformat1125, on 06/19/2009, -9/+13...maybe its cause i use it to its full potential, i love my ps3..although if there is a multi platform game coming out id rather buy it for my xbox...but still mgs4 is one of my favorite games of all time so the purchase is justified for me
- hellbent187, on 06/22/2009, -3/+7Sony, give Activision the swift backhand to the mouth they deserve. Or simply ignore them and treat them like the greedy little child that they are.
