Also, rumor has it that somebody, be it Activision or Harmonix forced by lawyers, is going to put out a patch on the 360 to STOP the Les Paul or Explorer from working with Rock Band. Normally, I wouldn't rumor-monger but given that the rumor that Activision was the cause of the PS3 patch delay is confirmed, the possibility of this rumor being true gains some credence. - LittleMagnet, on 12/13/2007, -2/+44This is completely ridiculous conduct by Activision. They must have known this would be a PR disaster, and all this is doing is hurting their customers. I urge all PS3 owners of Rock Band (and anyone else upset by this move) to contact Activision through their customer support and tell them that (whether it's true or not) you'll no longer be purchasing Activision products as long as they continue to block the release of this patch.
http://www.activision.com/index.html?module=contac ... - SuburbanHell, on 12/13/2007, -2/+31I don't know about anyone else, but I'll be boycotting Activision until they release the patch. It's not fair to the PS3 users that we cannot use this guitar. It would be more understandable if they were blocking across all platforms, but it works fine on the Xbox 360, so in my opinion, we should get the same usage out of it that they do.
- Dan11023, on 12/13/2007, -1/+26Excuse me, Activision? Why object to cross-compatible guitars? Certainly, allowing us to use your controllers in EA's game won't cannibalize your own sales. You have nothing to lose Activision. Do the right thing, or face the wrath of angry PS fans.
- BobsRevenge, on 12/13/2007, -0/+22Activision will recieve no DLC purchases from me for GH3, nor will I purchase any of their games in the foreseeable future until they allow for this patch to be released. Seriously, I'm pissed and so are a lot of other people.
360 owners who are fans of Rock Band, please send e-mails voicing dissaproval too. - BodomX, on 12/13/2007, -1/+20At least we can blame Blizzard as well.
- BodomX, on 12/13/2007, -2/+20EA isn't on there?
- etgoboom, on 12/13/2007, -0/+15The only reason i bought GH3 on PS3 was so i can have a 2nd guitar for RB, instead i get a buggy ass version of the game, over priced and forced bundles of DLC, Now i dont even get my fricken $100 back all b/c activision ran out of dicks to suck to keep them happy
- jwspiker, on 12/13/2007, -1/+14no more purchases of activision until they treat customers like they should be treated. this is crapp
- ForTheSteel, on 12/13/2007, -0/+12what is wrong with them? they will sell more les pauls since a lot of people like it better than the strat anyway.
- bacchustiger, on 12/13/2007, -0/+12Regardless of the game involved, this is a big "screw you" to gamers from a major game company. I'll be returning my copy of GH3, including the twoI bought as Christmas gifts, and spending the money on extra Rock Band guitars in February.
- doshindude, on 12/13/2007, -0/+11Rock Band is a better game in general, companies aside.
Harmonix>Neversoft. - masonreloaded, on 12/13/2007, -0/+11Yeah, this is rediklious. Microsoft/Sony should make it a clause of their publishing contracts that controllers have to be interoperable - whether it be lightguns, guitars, fishing rods or whatever. The console makers (and publishers in the long term) have much more to gain from letting consumers use the controllers they have paid for with as many games as possible.
- strictnein, on 12/13/2007, -0/+10I was debating between Rock Band and GH3. This has made my decision so much easier, even though my platform of choice is unaffected by their douchebagery.
- TBobes, on 12/13/2007, -1/+10Oh really? Activision didn't make any money on the guitar in question?
- Valley4rge, on 12/13/2007, -0/+9Unbelievable. Not only was GH3 subpar (in my opinion), but now they're preventing gamers from using peripherals to the fullest extent? How does Activision benefit from any of this? This is an incredibly stupid business move, and really paints the company as a load of whiny bitches.
- dvsbastard, on 12/13/2007, -0/+9Can anyone see any good reason (business, financial or otherwise) why activision would object to this?! If anything, the cross game compatibility would lead to potentially higher sales of GH3 as consumers would be able to use the guitar peripheral elsewhere, thus making it seeming more value for money?!
- inactive, on 12/13/2007, -0/+8All hail our new Publisher overlords, Activision. Otherwise known as EA 2.0.
- SuburbanHell, on 12/13/2007, -0/+8I don't understand why they would alienate their customer base like this. I would buy every guitar they came out with for all future instances of Guitar Hero if I knew they'd work with Rock Band, but instead I'll not be buying Activision products at all.
- shredomatic, on 12/13/2007, -0/+8I don't know why Activision even has any say in the matter. The patch was made by Harmonix, and distributed by Sony. Is there a EULA somewhere that says "This guitar will not be used for any other game"?
The whole thing just makes no sense at all. - Elranzer, on 12/13/2007, -0/+7Gamespot
- doshindude, on 12/13/2007, -0/+7the link to the same page at the top of this page isn't enough for you?
- lostmongoose, on 12/13/2007, -0/+7How did Harmonix sell out to Activision again?
- ScandyAndy, on 12/13/2007, -1/+7Please contact Activision at the address provided by LittleMagnet and professionally state you will not be purchasing any of their products until they allow the patch to be released. As someone who was going to buy GH3 on PS3 specifically for Rock Band, they lost 80 bucks right away from me.
- masonreloaded, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6But it's a two-way street - if my guitar I already own from Guitar Hero 2 works with future Guitar Hero games without me needing to buy a new guitar I am going to keep buying GH - me, and other casual gamers are not going to stump the money for another guitar when theirs is perfectly compatible but has been locked down to one game series.
If they open up the controllers, they are more likely to entice fans of the rival series away, or get people to buy both. If they lock it down to one or the other, people are going to choose sides and not have an incentive to try the other one.. - Nekura20x6, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6This is especially sickening since Red Octane made their mark by producing unlicensed third-party game controllers. If DDR or GuitarFreaks had locked them out, they would have gone under long before they could have ever created Guitar Hero.
- skellener, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5This is really stupid. I would guess that mos people into the Guitar type games own both games (not both game systems, but both Guitar Hero and Rockband). So these companies are NOT in competition at all. In fact if they keep putting out these games, they will HELP each other if their peripherals work with each other. It will HELP sell more future games. Hopefully they will see the light and stop this idiocracy.
- admanimal, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5They should allow their peripherals to be used in a competitor's product because it means they can sell more peripherals. Rock Band's bundled guitars have had reliability issues and many people simply prefer the Les Paul. Activision doesn't have to directly support or endorse the use of their guitars in Rock Band in any way, and by not doing anything but allowing this patch to be released (Harmonix did all of the development work), Activision is likely to sell more Les Pauls (which at the moment means selling more GH3, since that's the only way to get it, I think).
- doshindude, on 12/13/2007, -1/+6It won't stop there, Activision may go as far as to stop the Xplorer from working with Rock Band.
- skellener, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5They'll sell more GAMES if their peripherals work with each others games.
- dvsbastard, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4I thought about EA, but decided that I don't intentionally avoid them and so they aren't "blacklisted" as such... They just release absolute rubbish that I would never waste my hard earned cash on!
- emil1212, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4Stupid Stupid Activision, now I won't be buying Guitar Hero 3 in order to have another guitar for ROCK BAND. Might as well wait for Harmonix to release them seperately.
Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. - Treason, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4Not so mellow today...
- HappyScrappy, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4I don't think it would be fair if it were that way on 360 also.
It hurts the consumer. I don't like that. Regardless of platform.
Disclaimer:
I have GH3 and RB for PS3, so I'm affected by this. However, after using the RB Strat, I have zero interest in using the GH3 ukulele in RB anyway. And I have no interest in playing GH3 anymore either. - thedharmabum, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3Activision has every right to not support Harmonix hardware with their software. They have no right to prevent the release of a Harmonix software patch which will allow their software to work with someone else's peripheral. Imagine if Apple tried to prevent software companies from writing software which works with the iPod. That's essentially what Activision is doing. It also, in no way, impinges or installs anything on Activision's hardware, unlike, say, hacking a PSP or mobile phone, so they have no grounds for complaint there, either.
- johnbellone, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3When you voice your opinion to Activision please also let them know that you wish the PS3 guitar to work with the PS2 games. There is absolutely no reason why this controller cannot be used on the older games. This would also be the only way for gamers on the PS3 to actually get the full functionality out of their game. Because even with the adapters that can be purchased the guitar still does not function properly on the new system.
It is the very least that they could do considering I have purchased Guitar Hero 2, GH: Rock the Eighties, and GH3. I have no way of playing my Guitar Hero games from the PS2 at all right now, and its asinine to think I will be spending money on a PS2 to play those games. - slantyyz, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3I don't know if anybody noticed on the GH3 launch screen, but for the PS3, there's a legal note that you can only use an Activision guitar or a Sony Playstation controller with the game.
While not really enforceable, it's lame that they would discourage the use of 3rd party peripherals in such a manner. Even lamer that you couldn't buy the guitar peripheral only, making it tough to play 2 player if you didn't know anyone else with a PS3 copy of the game. - lokoluis15, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3I would understand your philosophy if Harmonix was asking Activision to write the patch and such, but that's not the case. Harmonix wrote their own patch that made a piece of hardware compatible with the PS3. I don't think that Activision has a right to stop such a patch from being distributed. Not only do they not have to distribute it, they do not have to write it, so they don't really have a say in what Sony allows to be distributed on its network. I think it's just whiny corporate BS, Activision is going out of their way to be inconvenient to consumers.
- smackhero, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3well, they're ultimately the ones who control that decision. i mean, harmonix developed the patch for their own software. sony can still release it regardless of activision's ridiculous objections if they wanted to (harmonix can support whatever controller they want, and gamers can use their GH controllers however they want). sony is just being retarded as usual.
- smackhero, on 12/13/2007, -1/+4if sony were smart, they'd release the patch. the lack of compatibility on the PS3 only makes the 360 more appealing. and i don't see why activision should have any say in this decision. if they don't want rock band guitars supported by guitar hero, fine. but they can't block rock band from supporting any hardware they want.
- Ob1masterjd26, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3Its actions like these that put you in the same boat as Verizon and Comcast. You know, that boat that gets sunk by companies like Apple and Amazon. Give teh customers what they want.
- inactive, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3"They objected" that's not exactly legal lingo. What right do they have to stop sony from sending a patch?
- gutterboy, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3Everyone should let Activision know this is *****. Digg up this article and leave a comment about how crappy this is then link it to them in a customer complaint form. I intend to send multiple complaints each day and boycott any of their products. This is such a ***** you to fans.
- HappyScrappy, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2Except I like the wireless guitar with the PS3 version. And I don't like how the save game system on 360 impedes my ability to share my save games (unlocks) between my place and my friends' houses.
- HappyScrappy, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2The GH3 guitars work as standard controllers, just like Sony dictates. You can play PS3 games using them which don't require analog sticks (which admittedly isn't many).
Activision will not let Harmonix support these controllers though. - LocalH, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2GTA, real murder, etc.
Super Mario, eat mushrooms and flowers and stomp turtles, etc.
Mortal Kombat, freezeball someone and rip their spine out, etc. - smackhero, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2that was my first thought as well. i think Sony is just being retarded as usual. they really need to fire whoever's in charge of the recent piss-poor management of the platform. activision has absolutely no say in this matter, and this just puts off consumers and makes the 360 more appealing.
IMO, Sony's got excellent engineers and developers, and they make great gaming devices, but their corporate leadership and whoever's in charge of their business strategy are tanking their brand that had been built up by the PS1 and PS2. i love my PSP, but i really wish it'd been made by any other company other than Sony. cuz they really seem hell bent on alienating consumers and ***** us any way they can these days. - Sethbacca, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2That doesn't hurt just Sony, that also hurts Activision. Thats 3 million less customers that they have a chance of selling to if they short the PS3. With the current cost of developing next gen games, they have to open to as wide a market as possible which is why you have fewer system exclusives than you did back in the day.
If they want to stop developing software for PS3 because of a stupid patch and deny all that revenue from selling content to the PS3 community, they'd be pretty numb. - smackhero, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2i guess that makes sense, but Sony really shouldn't be doing anymore to alienate consumers. and as much as people on here like to bag on the PS3, in the real world, it's still a very economically viable platform for game developers. i don't think activision would ignore such a significant market just because Rock Star gains support for GH controllers--especially as the 360 already has this.
- TheKappa, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2Hey, Activision- I planned on buying Guitar Hero III tonight. Guess what? Now I'm not. I'm springing the extra coin for Rock Band instead. Suck it. Suck it long, suck it hard.
