- DeucesWild, on 01/24/2008, -3/+39"I want to make something abundantly clear; this is why you bought a PlayStation 3."
Lol, actually it is why I bought my PS3 in Japan with Prologue. This glorified demo is incredible and I can't wait for the whole product. - funsac22, on 01/24/2008, -2/+31From a physics perspective there are many great racing sims for the PC (GT Legends, rFactor, etc..) but the Gran Turismo series brings in some great elements and the graphics only get more and more jaw dropping. This may convince me to buy a PS3; however, it won't convince my wife to let me buy a PS3... nuts
- hansondr, on 01/24/2008, -4/+22As a more arcade style race fan I can see quickly getting frusterated with the realistic physics but looks like any sim fans will be in heaven. Very cool to actually read a review from someone with racing experience, hopefully this trend will continue.
- damnyooneek, on 01/24/2008, -1/+19Did you even read the article?! the article says exactly opposite from everything you're saying. Here's the section of the article that talks about physics:
You see, this is where I am most impressed with Gran Turismo 5: Prologue. No other racing game has this level of physics detail. Playing on "professional" mode (real-world physics) with no electronic aids, if you lift off the throttle mid-turn, the rear of the Elise quickly breaks loose. If you snap back onto the throttle, the rear end squats down on its rubber and the car straightens itself out, just like it would out on a real racetrack. It's amazingly impressive, because most racing games, even previous GT titles, just don't have the same accuracy that GT5: Prologue does. The level of precision you can achieve is surprisingly accurate, meaning you can generate big, controllable slip angles. The limits feel both progressive and exploitable, but take it too far and you will pay the price, just as you would in a real car.
It doesn't stop there, though; GT5 has managed to believably simulate all drive train systems. For example, all-wheel drive cars certainly have their own particular driving style. When you get on the throttle through a turn in an all-wheel drive car, the power is transferred to the outside wheels (which have the most grip) and the car has a tendency to pull itself out towards the edge of the track. As usual, Polyphony Digital is on top of it, and the all-wheel drive cars in GT5 handle accurately, as do the front and rear-wheel drive vehicles. Each car seems to have its own particular personality, just as it should be. - _skin_, on 01/24/2008, -3/+19I have not bought a PS3, I am waiting for this game. I NEED THIS GAME! Good read.
- sovereign3, on 01/24/2008, -1/+17You masturbate to cars?
- ItsMyWii, on 01/24/2008, -4/+18Not at all.
- whaleyboy69, on 01/24/2008, -1/+14I personally thought that Gran Turismo was very good. I used to use it to get ready for racing real cars on real tracks. While you don't have all of the physical inputs that you do from a real car (the seat of the pants feeling) it is reasonably accurate.
I switched to Forza 2 because in my opinion the XBOX affords better online play which is all I care about these days.
As to real cars and donuts, well, not every car makes donuts. My private car has 300 HP, rear wheel drive and a mid-engine layout and it will not do burnouts if the stability controll is off - it just doesn't make power that way. In Gran Turismo if you spec out a "stump puller" like a Corvette or a Viper and do your test you will do burnouts. It is not a matter of simple HP, it makes a difference how much torque is available from the car, what the rear tires are like, how the engine makes power and all of that. I thought that GT was pretty accurate in that regard. - DeucesWild, on 01/24/2008, -0/+11I'd rather have the disc! Besides I was there for the holidays so why not? And after the exchange rate the white ps3 only cost me $350. Oh and I got a Dualshock3 too! Best Playstation controller ever.
- counterplex, on 01/24/2008, -1/+12You must be single :)
- rowlodge, on 01/24/2008, -1/+11tried forza, kinda like forza 1 ,spinouts are easy to do, not fun when your on the lawn all the time, ill get me a ps3 because i loved gt so much when i was a kid.
- Decibel9M3, on 01/24/2008, -6/+15Gran Turismo 5 + Logitech G25 Racing Wheel = Racing Simulation Heaven
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/gaming/playstati ...
It's a bit pricey, but I think I may be buying one. - jamescranwell, on 01/24/2008, -3/+12Can't wait for this game, just hope it handles better than GT HD
- elvenseven, on 01/24/2008, -2/+11Jeremy Clarkson (Top Gear) compared it to a real car on the same track and it was almost exact same not long ago.
- inactive, on 01/24/2008, -0/+8Ya, you shouldn't worry about that, it handles very well and realistically. The thing that people have to remember is that, it's just a feeler. Yes a $40+ feeler. Have people forgotten what prologue means? Haha. Anyway, it's a great game but don't expect much (in terms of features). It makes it a great buy now that they've added online multilayer support (Japan for now). I'd recommend it, if you don't mind the price and understand that it's only an introduction.
On another note, as i'm writing this, i see comments about how Forza beats GT. This has got to stop. Both have their differences, both have their advantages, both have their disadvantages, both offer solid gameplay and solid graphics (if you care so much about it). I, will always respect the GT series more because i've been with them since 1998. They've always pushed the barriers for the racing simulation genres and i think their going to do it again with GT5, in their own way.
*I own GT Prologue (import)* - Fixion, on 01/24/2008, -1/+9I guess you never figured out how to turn off all of the traction control and ABS in Grand Turismo.
Once you turn off the traction control and ABS the cars start handling like the real things. Some of the cars with more power (500+ bhp) become undrivable with no TC, but a TC setting of 2 is adequate to get rid of most wheelspin. GT4 is quite the simulator if you know how to set it up. Unfortunately there is nothing that can simulate the seat-of-the-pants accelerometer... yet. - shredswithpiks, on 01/24/2008, -0/+8o_O I see you've played a lot of GT5
- nanboya, on 01/24/2008, -1/+8Agreed. Are you sure you are playing the same game? Give up on the teen antics of trying to burn out or making donuts and do a bit of real driving on a circuit or mountain roads; you'll see very quickly that the physics are reasonably accurate and predictable.
- inactive, on 01/24/2008, -3/+10Hey potisreallygood....I have a feeling that the pot has done something to your head. Stop trying to convince other people to hate games along with you. There are better things to do.
- jrizzo, on 01/24/2008, -4/+10XBox FanBoy!
I know you were all thinking it... - ender52, on 01/24/2008, -0/+6Um... He in no way says breaking in a mid-engine car forces weight onto the rear tires. He in fact says
"When you step on the throttle in a mid-engine car, you force the majority of the car's weight onto the rear tires, generating grip. Conversely, if you lift off the throttle, you force the weight of the car onto the front tires, losing traction in the rear." - aleone31, on 01/24/2008, -0/+6I did buy a ps3 for this game. It has been a long time since a publisher has pushed the envelope on a racing simulation. I have been racing in the SCCA for more than a decade, and I completely agree that a simuation can never approach the real world as the author of this article details. However, I am really hoping this will be more an electronic version of bumper cars.
- askjeffro, on 01/24/2008, -1/+7When does the full game come out? I'm waiting for its release and then likely will be picking up a PS3, assuming the game lives up to its promise.
- vagarach, on 01/24/2008, -0/+5Buy one now, when the G25 is still the G25 and not the GT25 (the GT5 special edition), and prices are still down. I got mine for 2/3's the retail price, which the GT25 will surely not be.
- pilott, on 01/24/2008, -1/+6I'd have to agree about the AI. I have loved all the games, but I actually made my own sub game in GT in screwing over the AI. If the long races series you could skip races (and get the prize faster) if you ran the 'fast' car off the road and make him finish last, while still winning yourself. With no penalties for hitting other cars, you can just ram them off the road so the 'slow' AI can get in first place. It was kind of fun, but realistic? Not so much.
That being said, this may be the reason I buy a PS3 :) - elurstoidi, on 01/24/2008, -1/+6this "trend"? wtf. ever hear of gran turismo... the first one? world renowned and reviewed by professional race car drivers?
- inactive, on 01/24/2008, -2/+7Forza2 has set the bar pretty high - I hope this next Gran Turismo is more than eye candy.
- v0yeur, on 01/24/2008, -1/+6you DO know that you can just create a japanese PSN account and download GT5:Prologue?
http://blogs.ign.com/xheavenxsentx/2006/12/09/3968 ... - epilonious, on 01/24/2008, -1/+5Brake vs. Break.
A car brakes when it's driver presses the brake pedal which transfers pressure through the brake fluid into the brake pistons in the brake calipers pressing the brake pads onto the brake rotors (unless the car has drum brakes, at which point the brake pistons push the brake pads onto the brake drum).
A car usually breaks when any parts of the brake system fails. - heartcoldfusion, on 01/24/2008, -3/+7Sounds like it's Forza 2 a year later with a less realistic physics system and better graphics.
- Rothgarr, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4When the game comes out I'd be interested to read an unbiased comparison between Gran Turismo 5 and Forza 2 in terms of physics, damage, customization, visuals, multiplayer, gameplay, fun, etc. It would be cool to get a perspective from both a gamer and a pro race driver.
- shredswithpiks, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4GT5 will be the reason I buy a PS3 (blu-ray is a bonus I guess)
- ofenza, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4There's always a guy saying he doesn't know if his wife is going to let him buy this or that new piece of technology. What is wrong with you?
- gutterboy, on 01/24/2008, -4/+8The irony is I am a huge PS3 fan. GT franchise has just let me down so many times. It is the 5th damn game and it still feels like GT 2.3
- hardwickj, on 01/24/2008, -5/+9You are going to get dugg down because of the numerous ignorant PS3 fanboy's who have no understanding of real racing simulators. Most of them think that if it looks like a car and supports a steering wheel, its a simulator. There is no educating these types.
- potisreallygood, on 01/24/2008, -1/+5are you a little jealous pjkli? what do you drive? I guess i could take a picture with a sign, but i really have nothing to prove as this is the internet, but if you insist, you could press me to do it. You must be really poor/ignorant if you get jealous of people owning a car that cost $26,000.
- thecheatah, on 01/25/2008, -1/+5"less realistic physics" did you play the game? did u read the article? Can you show me how there less realistic?
Thanks in advanced. - staticneuron, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4Correct me if I am wrong.... this review is done by a guy who races cars for a living. Yet "YOU" somehow have played GT5 and feel the Live For speed is better.
For some reason..... I feel like your opinion may be a little skewed. - aleone31, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3I drive formula cars in the SCCA and I concur grand prix legends was harder to drive then real life. I have been of the opinion its because you can't actually feel the change in weight distribution with your arse like you can in real life. That said, I did have a ball with that game ... and I really hope this title delivers on this review.
- nanboya, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3I've worn out the tyres on the demo download and patiently waiting for an import copy I snagged off eBay to arrive this week. Ironically enough, I just set up my Japan PSN account and realized I could have just downloaded it...
- adriankeith, on 01/24/2008, -1/+4Not sure why you're being dugg down. GTR2 was amazing and most people will probably never know it.
- funkdr, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3yup you hit the nail on the head. this is why i will be getting a PS3 soon this year
- s4g4n, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3We buy consoles to play games, not to praise the hardware's brand. This is that kind of game.
- cyrillsneer, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3Its a great game, and I own every version and love playing them with friends, but to suggest it is the pinnacle of physics simulation in video games, smacks of a lack of research or knowledge from the journalist. I would suggest Grand Prix legends, Grand Prix 4 or Live for Speed all have vastly superior physic engines, doesn't mean their more fun, but probably does contribute to them being more realistic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Prix_Legends - lburgguy, on 01/24/2008, -1/+4Grand Prix Legends for the PC is harder to drive than a real formula car and yes I used to race FF2000 and FF.
- cthellis, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3Show her Little Big Planet. That title can charm just about anyone. ;-)
- funsac22, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3GTR is great, I can sit at my PC for hours turning laps all alone on a course :)
- Dracusis, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2Shush bunny.
You can't rush perfection. - Flynnz, on 01/24/2008, -1/+3yeah this is also the game I will be buying a PS3 for.....I just hope the online, and physics are up to the new standard Forza 2 as raised.
One thing is for sure...looks better than Forza heh - inactive, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2I'm not a huge racing game fan, but Forza is pretty fun online. I've never really played a GT game, but this one looks cool. Don't really think I'm going to buy a PS3 to play it, but I'd like to try it out sometime.
