A 70-Year-Old's Take on Metal Gear Solid 4
kotaku.com — At 70, my dad isn't probably the typical Metal Gear Solid gamer, probably not even the typical gamer. But after watching me play through chunks of Grand Theft Auto after its release he vowed to pick up the Playstation 3. Why the PS3? Because the original Xbox, now a magnet for dust in his house, got a chance and it was the Playstation's turn.

- beautifulbeast, on 06/20/2008, -2/+80Grandpa rocks!
Seriously, how cool is that a 70 year-old has got himself into a videogame like that? I keep trying to teach my aunt to play the dumbest of games but all we get is frustrated.- mywhitenoise, on 06/20/2008, -2/+6He's almost finished the game too, I know exactly where he's at. That boss fight was pissing me off until I figured out what to do.
- thecheatah, on 06/21/2008, -2/+2I figured it out in a heart beat what to do. I just NEVER used CQC so had no idea how to do what I needed to do. I read the instructions over and over again from the briefings. It turned out that I needed to take out a knife ;-).
- skidme, on 06/20/2008, -7/+5Yeah, I wasted way too much ammo on Vamp. Still, I wouldn't call it a difficult fight, considering that he tells you how you can kill him.
- lbdinh, on 06/21/2008, -4/+17Thanks for the spoilers assholes.
- YoctoYotta, on 06/21/2008, -3/+20YOU HAVEN'T BEAT IT TWICE ALREADY!?!?! Is something wrong? Do you want to talk about it?
- lbdinh, on 06/21/2008, -1/+5I know. It's unforgiveable.
I hope I can find some time for it though cuz' I played all the games in the series and this one looks like the best one.
- lbdinh, on 06/21/2008, -1/+5I know. It's unforgiveable.

- DefaultGen, on 06/21/2008, -1/+4I think he got into it because he related to the player's character.
- utahnkid, on 06/21/2008, -1/+5Haha
"but all we get is frustrated"
Emphasis on WE. Teaching someone how to use a controller for the first time is like.. Teaching someone how to use a controller for the first time. Just as bad as it sounds. - nomarguru, on 06/21/2008, -0/+0Kudos for grandpa

- dislexicllama, on 06/20/2008, -3/+38I got my grandmother to play Half-Life (although she is hardly as quick as this gentleman at picking up the controls) and she can't make it past the hazard course..
Stories like this make me smile but the few of them I've seen (my grandmother included) is they end up leaving the games behind because they just don't have the same motivation towards gaming us younger lads do.
Kudos nonetheless, great article :) - grayfx007, on 06/20/2008, -28/+23That's badass; Hideo Kojima is a genius. MGS4 is one of the best games I have played in a long time. I would be playing it if I was 70 yrs old too haha.
- S4MF1SHER, on 06/21/2008, -1/+2I think you've missed the point of the article.

- dougvfr750, on 06/20/2008, -0/+37I have seen the same attitude among some elderly gamers. They don't have the same need to beat the game as the younger gamers do. I think part of it is the fact that with some younger gamers it is a necessary badge of accomplishment, while the elder gamers have nothing to prove. With the younger gamers it is almost like a rite of passage within their group of friends, while the elder gamers don't have the same level of care about measuring up to what friends are doing.
- skidme, on 06/20/2008, -0/+15I don't know what you're talking about man. Whenever a game stumps me, I quit playing it for a while. I hope that doesn't make me old...

- LanceUppercut, on 06/21/2008, -1/+9I totally understand. It is why I will never buy Ninja Gaiden, and why Assassin's creed was perfect for me. It is hard not to lose at that game, but man they get your heart racing before letting you off the hook by slaughtering 70 guards.
- Volath, on 06/21/2008, -0/+2I don't know about that doug. I''ve always just quit playing a game for a while if it gets tough or if I REALLY REALLY want to know how the game plays out I'll muscle through it or check an FAQ.
- CalamariAce, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1I play games to have fun. It's just a different form of entertainment; more active than watching TV but less than doing a sport.
- EvilFerret, on 06/21/2008, -0/+2Hell I'm already in about the same place. I'd guess that at least 95% of the games I've bought within the last 10yrs have gone unfinished. In fact, the last game I remember playing all the way through was Half-Life 2 and that took me almost 6 months to push myself to finish it. Sometimes I wonder if I have ADD, or at least... *walks off*
- Tebixan, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1Actually, most kids with ADD can concentrate on video games. It gives ample ammunition to critiques that the kids don't really have any problems. If they can spend 5 hours on a nintendo, they should be able to spend 5 hours on homework, they say. None of the psycologists can explain it, but I think it has something to do with the contantly changing environments and immediate gratification of a video game.
I take Adderal to study & when I work, but not when I play games. I've also beaten almost every game I've ever owned. Plus unlocked most of the hidden stuff.

(yes I have played thru the game once already)- BestJaxx, on 06/21/2008, -1/+12Wasn't Vamp a bitch to beat. It took me almost half an hour just to figure out how to kill him, and I play video games day-in, day-out. That guy was right, it is a little frustrating.

- SevenTwo, on 06/21/2008, -8/+3We're not even related I'm proud of the fact that he was dedicated enough to progress that far through the game. MGS4 can be quite a challenge for even the youngest fans of the series, especially those trying so desperately to earn those prestigious badges. BTW is it wrong that I'm ranked as an Eagle both online and off for acquiring an insanely large amount of head shots?

- jasnmb, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1I haven't played the game yet, but I think Solid Snake is only in his 40s in MGS4. He just looks old because of a defect in the cloning process that caused him to age prematurely.
- spookyttws, on 06/21/2008, -0/+12I never really thought about it, but (if all goes well in my life) I will have all the time in the world and (hopefully) enough money to fund a years long gaming marathon at a time where console gaming will have evolved into something amazing. Retirement now means something completely different now.
- fanclerks, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6I plan on having a bad ass home theater/game room by retirement. I should never have to leave it... ever.
- Tebixan, on 06/23/2008, -0/+2My step-grandfather did that. He retired, set up a bad ass home entertainment system, and bought all the latest consoles & games. Unfortunately, his reaction time has slowed considerably, so he's just not as good at gaming as he used to be. He needs slower games, and has to buy all the cheat-guides to finish anything.
Even now and then when I visit him I'll have to go through a couple of the games he's stuck on and get him past a particularly difficult boss fight or something.
- l800LEMMINGS, on 06/21/2008, -0/+8i'm really happy about how gaming is changing popular culture. when i was a kid i got super nintendo my parents were unsupportive and acted like i had a drug addiction. when i got a little older i got nintendo 64 me and my dad tried star wars and golden eye and had started to get into gaming though my mom still unsupportive of us both. now i am older and visit my parents to see my mom playing guitar hero and later my dad playing assassins creed
- bigstinky, on 06/21/2008, -0/+36That was cool. My 76 year old dad, after killing a ps1...(Granted, it was by playing chessmaster) made me go out to find another one, when he heard they were discontinued completely, he went mad and purchased a ps2...Tiger Woods golf and fifa soccer. He loved it. My dad is a complete tard when it comes to anything electronic, and I mean ANYTHING, but man he can tear through game menus like a baddass.
- LanceUppercut, on 06/21/2008, -10/+5Having a dad that committed suicide but always dominated me at wii bowling, I have to give this a digg =).

I've said this about all the MGS games and face-palmed every time. - GoGoPoCoSo, on 06/21/2008, -2/+3I was inspired by this article; I think I'll try getting my 67-year-old grandfather to play Soul Caliber IV when it comes out and see how that turns out.

- jgzman, on 06/21/2008, -1/+11Expand your horizons man. When you're eighty, do you plan to sit abound and make tomato sauce?
I plan to get my tomato sauce from a bloody replicator, and keep on gaming.- tehknotte, on 06/21/2008, -1/+2Yes that is actually what I plan to do. I`m not going to be an old fat man with no culture.

- dinostabOMG, on 06/21/2008, -2/+6I remember letting my godmother have a turn at Final Fantasy 6. She couldn't even get the characters (not even in battle or anything) to walk in the direction she wanted. So that was that.
- FuckXboxx, on 06/21/2008, -12/+5Xbox is more like a magnet for retards who don't give a flying ***** about gaming and don't care at all about how much they're hurting the industry for people who actually care.
- wonderbriefs, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6How does playing an Xbox hurt the industry? No, really. Explain. I'm all ears.
- FuckXboxx, on 06/21/2008, -1/+3Just look at these games:
Halo - Stolen and destroyed by Xbox
Ghost Recon - Destroyed by Xbox
Deus Ex 2 - Destroyed by Xbox
Unreal Tournament 3 - Destroyed by Xbox
Oblivion - Destroyed by Xbox
Bioshock - Destroyed by Xbox
Mass Effect - Stolen by Xbox...Bioware makes PC games...not Xbox pieces of *****.
All of these games were made for the Xbox and PC at the same time and as a result they had to dumb down the gameplay, challenge, and controls to suit the needs of the ***** retards who can't figure out how to put together a computer. These are PC games intended to be played with customizable controls and customizable content.
Halo is single-handedly lowering the expectations of gamers. They think that mediocre crap that wears a shiny suit is some how the best game ever. It's why people don't even get upset when GTA IV had all of the fun sucked out of it in the name of graphics, realistic AI and physics.- wonderbriefs, on 06/22/2008, -1/+2Okay, I'm speaking as someone who has been building his own PC's for thirteen years. The gaming performance that you'll get from an Xbox 360 or PS3 is leaps and bounds ahead of what you would get by building a PC for the same price. Sure, you can build a PC that will outperform either of those consoles, but it will cost more than $600. Now, if the game developers thought that their most profitable demographic was the hardcore, pc-building, pay-as-much-as-neccessary gamers like you and me, then I'm sure that GTAIV would have both realistic physics and the fun of customizing your character and such.
However, the fact of the matter is that XBox 360 and Playstation 3 sell so well as they are, that the game developers have recognized who they're most profitable demographic really is. All guys (and some girls) ages 16-28, regardless of whether or not they are "***** retards who can't figure out how to put together a computer," as you so graciously put it. I can't put together Mitsubishi Evo from parts. But I know a guy who's doing just that. I know he doesn't think I'm a retard for not being able to figure it out. It's all just what you're into.
Back to the point, the fact that you single-out XBox and not Playstation 3 is a little bit naive too. I'm sure you just jumped on the hate-XBox wagon because Microsoft is apparently the evil empire. But just take a look at how much power and influence Sony has. If it's powerful corporations that make you hate something, I think you should be hating on both Sony and Microsoft. In fact, I think you should crusade against the both of them until the moment you defeat both of their CEO's in a victorious light-saber battle. Then there will be no more corporations to pay the game developers. And you will apparently be able to call all the shots seeing as you're the master of all video game industry knowledge, and undoubtedly the coolest kid in your class.
Here's a little piece of advice for you. You'll eventually get laid when you stop making weird assumptions about video games and crusade against a certain console as if it has any bearing on real life. Seriously kid. - FuckXboxx, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1I've hated Xbox since before it was released.
I was so pumped for Halo and then it was stolen by Microsoft and Xbox and made into an Xbox-only game. They created millions of enemies on that day. All of my friends that I played CS with gave up their PCs for Xboxs and I haven't talked to any of them since.
Putting together a car is as complex as putting together a PC? Are you seriously that ignorant?
Well then let me help you.
RAM/Memory goes into two of those four slots that are typically colored yellow/blue or black/yellow.
Cpu goes in that off-white part with all the holes.
Videocard goes into the short slot that runs perpendicular to the memory slots.
Done. Push power button...enjoy. - wonderbriefs, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1You stopped talking to them for that? Wow. Glad to hear that you have convictions. And from the sound of your experience in building a PC, you've never built something from scratch, have you?
- wonderbriefs, on 06/22/2008, -1/+2Okay, I'm speaking as someone who has been building his own PC's for thirteen years. - alach11, on 06/21/2008, -0/+4Looking at your name, the only thing that surprises me is that you would devote so much time and effort into bashing a game console nobody is forcing you to like. If you love the PS3 more power to you, but there's no need to declare jihad against people who game differently.
- FuckXboxx, on 06/21/2008, -1/+1I've never even played a PS3.
I don't care if people game differently. What I care about is ***** idiots who are too lazy to learn how to game on a PC destroying the games that I love and have always loved.
They don't even give a ***** about gaming and yet they're the ones the devs are aiming to please...why? Because consoles sell millions more units because people are ***** LAZY RETARDS.- theaceoffire, on 06/22/2008, -0/+2I can afford a $400 console and a $60 game, but I would have to spend more to have a gaming machine.
Not to mention that I don't have to put up with driver issues, someone downloading a virus (yet) and wiping the OS, and I don't have to upgrade its parts every year or so to stay at peak performance.
I admire PC gamers, and I wish I could afford to be one, but consoles are the best I can do right now.

- wonderbriefs, on 06/21/2008, -0/+3What world are you living in? Who needs proof of how mainstream video gaming is? Walk into a Best Buy. The video game section is as big, if not bigger than the movie section. The video game market is expected to exceed the music industry in total dollars by 2011 and movies by 2012. Hell, my dad bought a Nintendo for himself in 1986; I was two and couldn't figure it out.

- itsthebrod, on 06/21/2008, -6/+1What a dumb concept. I watch movies to be entertained without any effort, and I play games to *play games*. I've only played one MGS game (whichever one was on Xbox) and I hated it. The cutscenes were ridiculously long and way too frequent. I remember at one point when I was walking on catwalks, it would literally go like, watch a cutscene, walk a few steps, watch another cutscene, etc.
There are better ways to build a story than to have 20 minute cutscenes for every 2 minutes of actual game playing.

- Tahiri, on 06/21/2008, -1/+10They did decide, they wanted a movie-like game. Duh
- Coolmatt49, on 06/21/2008, -0/+15It's awesome when people (young and old) give video games a CHANCE rather than just say "SIXTEEN BUTTONS! That's too complicated!" It's even better when they enjoy it to the point of going out and buying new games for themselves to play.
When a 70 year-old gets into playing a game like Metal Gear Solid 4, that's truly epic. - X9001, on 06/21/2008, -2/+16You think that your 360 collects dust? You should see my Wii
- bigwillystyle, on 06/21/2008, -0/+3nah grandpa was referring to the original xbox.
but i feel you i got the wii when it launched and bought all the "epic" games. never could get into anyof them except the sports game taht came with it - Varz, on 06/21/2008, -0/+3He didn't say that his 360 collects dust, if you saw the other article about him playing GTA4 he said that he had an original Xbox so now he wanted to try a Playstation to see what they were like.

- Rockarollr, on 06/21/2008, -0/+3Have you ever seen Old Grandma Hardcore?!? She's the ORIGINAL elderly gaming badass...
Check her out: http://oghc.blogspot.com/- bewareofmoose, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1And she's very, very annoying. She's like an angry dumbass who never got that dose of maturity that hits us all around 14-19.
- CDep, on 06/21/2008, -0/+3Your grandpa tried something and he didn't like it. Anyone who is willing to try new things will never get old.
By the way, your grandpa knows more about gaming than I do. Go Gramps! - chrgrose, on 06/21/2008, -0/+5I can't even begin to imagine what the games will be like when I'm 70....
- Cybercomet, on 06/21/2008, -0/+0I honestly...never even knew you could use the syringe in game until that boss fight. Maybe this is common knowledge but...anytime your having trouble with a boss try calling Otacon on the Codec. It may take a few calls but eventually he'll give you the solution.
- JudgeMonkey, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1I accidentally called him during the raging raven fight and he said *gasp* the gliders have lights on them. I called him a few times on this one, and he was never any help. I knew the syringe could be used on others, it says so when you are selecting it in the item menu, however I guess the first time I tried I was just not in the right spot because I couldn't even grab him so I thought that method was wrong for a while.
- Ribsbroken, on 06/21/2008, -0/+7I took my ps3 to my parents house because they have a 50" plasma and bose surround sound and every time there was a cut scene my parents would stop and watch thinking it was a movie. My mom enjoyed the smoking monkey and remembered Snake as the main character. My dad enjoyed the action cut scenes and got angry at me for shooting the women frogs. My mom basically watch the whole ending with me and laugh and cried during the Raiden ending. This game is revolutionary. My parents didn't like COD4 or Halo 3 because of the violence but they appreciated MSG4.
- SirVaksghn, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1I once tried something like this with my dad. I stopped encouraging him after he wiped the floor with me while playing NFS Carbon for the 18th time
- pwnerofnoobs, on 06/22/2008, -2/+2Learn how to write. The first few words "At 70, my dad isn't probably the typical Metal Gear Solid gamer" gave me a headache. The next three gave me diarrhea. My eyes became crossed and bloodied from trying to interpret the rest of that garbage. I couldn't finish reading it.
- Aaron101090, on 06/22/2008, -1/+2This game is worth the $500.
- Ben1220, on 06/23/2008, -0/+2What a great story. :) Your dad is a legend. I have tried and failed many times to get my family into gaming :(
- Andrwmorph, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1I'd need to go clockwork orange on my parents to make them play anything other than Wii sports.
- Bloodburn, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1I brought my ps3 and gta4 over to my dads place when it came out. He is 65, is ANTI gun. He played and had tons of fun running around killing people with the cars and shooting people.......go figure.
He is thinking of getting a ps3 now cause he said it was easy to navigate and control. And it was nice and shiney lol - illdavey, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1It's great that he's giving the ps3 a chance - my dad won't touch it, I think games confuse him.
- Th0rus, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1I keep trying to get my dad to get a wii cause I know he would love the ***** out of it.
