A 70-Year-Old's Take on Metal Gear Solid 4

kotaku.com — At 70, my dad isn't probably the typical Metal Gear Solid gamer, probably not even the typical gamer. But after watching me play through chunks of Grand Theft Auto after its release he vowed to pick up the Playstation 3. Why the PS3? Because the original Xbox, now a magnet for dust in his house, got a chance and it was the Playstation's turn.

    Stories like this make me smile but the few of them I've seen (my grandmother included) is they end up leaving the games behind because they just don't have the same motivation towards gaming us younger lads do.

I think part of it is the fact that with some younger gamers it is a necessary badge of accomplishment, while the elder gamers have nothing to prove. With the younger gamers it is almost like a rite of passage within their group of friends, while the elder gamers don't have the same level of care about measuring up to what friends are doing.

In fact, the last game I remember playing all the way through was Half-Life 2 and that took me almost 6 months to push myself to finish it. If they can spend 5 hours on a nintendo, they should be able to spend 5 hours on homework, they say. None of the psycologists can explain it, but I think it has something to do with the contantly changing environments and immediate gratification of a video game.

        I take Adderal to study & when I work, but not when I play games. I've also beaten almost every game I've ever owned. Plus unlocked most of the hidden stuff.

MGS4 can be quite a challenge for even the youngest fans of the series, especially those trying so desperately to earn those prestigious badges. BTW is it wrong that I'm ranked as an Eagle both online and off for acquiring an insanely large amount of head shots?

Unfortunately, his reaction time has slowed considerably, so he's just not as good at gaming as he used to be. He needs slower games, and has to buy all the cheat-guides to finish anything.

      Even now and then when I visit him I'll have to go through a couple of the games he's stuck on and get him past a particularly difficult boss fight or something.

My 76 year old dad, after killing a ps1...(Granted, it was by playing chessmaster) made me go out to find another one, when he heard they were discontinued completely, he went mad and purchased a ps2...Tiger Woods golf and fifa soccer. He loved it. My dad is a complete tard when it comes to anything electronic, and I mean ANYTHING, but man he can tear through game menus like a baddass.

        All of these games were made for the Xbox and PC at the same time and as a result they had to dumb down the gameplay, challenge, and controls to suit the needs of the ***** retards who can't figure out how to put together a computer. These are PC games intended to be played with customizable controls and customizable content.

        Halo is single-handedly lowering the expectations of gamers. They think that mediocre crap that wears a shiny suit is some how the best game ever. It's why people don't even get upset when GTA IV had all of the fun sucked out of it in the name of graphics, realistic AI and physics.

The gaming performance that you'll get from an Xbox 360 or PS3 is leaps and bounds ahead of what you would get by building a PC for the same price. Sure, you can build a PC that will outperform either of those consoles, but it will cost more than $600. Now, if the game developers thought that their most profitable demographic was the hardcore, pc-building, pay-as-much-as-neccessary gamers like you and me, then I'm sure that GTAIV would have both realistic physics and the fun of customizing your character and such.
          However, the fact of the matter is that XBox 360 and Playstation 3 sell so well as they are, that the game developers have recognized who they're most profitable demographic really is. All guys (and some girls) ages 16-28, regardless of whether or not they are "***** retards who can't figure out how to put together a computer," as you so graciously put it. I can't put together Mitsubishi Evo from parts. But I know a guy who's doing just that. I know he doesn't think I'm a retard for not being able to figure it out. It's all just what you're into.
          Back to the point, the fact that you single-out XBox and not Playstation 3 is a little bit naive too. I'm sure you just jumped on the hate-XBox wagon because Microsoft is apparently the evil empire. But just take a look at how much power and influence Sony has. If it's powerful corporations that make you hate something, I think you should be hating on both Sony and Microsoft. In fact, I think you should crusade against the both of them until the moment you defeat both of their CEO's in a victorious light-saber battle. Then there will be no more corporations to pay the game developers. And you will apparently be able to call all the shots seeing as you're the master of all video game industry knowledge, and undoubtedly the coolest kid in your class.

          Here's a little piece of advice for you. You'll eventually get laid when you stop making weird assumptions about video games and crusade against a certain console as if it has any bearing on real life. Seriously kid.

          I was so pumped for Halo and then it was stolen by Microsoft and Xbox and made into an Xbox-only game. They created millions of enemies on that day. All of my friends that I played CS with gave up their PCs for Xboxs and I haven't talked to any of them since.

          Putting together a car is as complex as putting together a PC? Are you seriously that ignorant?

          Well then let me help you.

          RAM/Memory goes into two of those four slots that are typically colored yellow/blue or black/yellow.

          Cpu goes in that off-white part with all the holes.

          Videocard goes into the short slot that runs perpendicular to the memory slots.

          Done. Push power button...enjoy.

The video game section is as big, if not bigger than the movie section. The video game market is expected to exceed the music industry in total dollars by 2011 and movies by 2012. I've only played one MGS game (whichever one was on Xbox) and I hated it. The cutscenes were ridiculously long and way too frequent. I remember at one point when I was walking on catwalks, it would literally go like, watch a cutscene, walk a few steps, watch another cutscene, etc.

        There are better ways to build a story than to have 20 minute cutscenes for every 2 minutes of actual game playing.

  • Cybercomet, on 06/21/2008, -0/+0I honestly...never even knew you could use the syringe in game until that boss fight. Maybe this is common knowledge but...anytime your having trouble with a boss try calling Otacon on the Codec. It may take a few calls but eventually he'll give you the solution.

I called him a few times on this one, and he was never any help. I knew the syringe could be used on others, it says so when you are selecting it in the item menu, however I guess the first time I tried I was just not in the right spot because I couldn't even grab him so I thought that method was wrong for a while.

My mom enjoyed the smoking monkey and remembered Snake as the main character. My dad enjoyed the action cut scenes and got angry at me for shooting the women frogs. My mom basically watch the whole ending with me and laugh and cried during the Raiden ending. This game is revolutionary. My parents didn't like COD4 or Halo 3 because of the violence but they appreciated MSG4.

    He is thinking of getting a ps3 now cause he said it was easy to navigate and control. And it was nice and shiney lol
