- EDmAN, on 01/24/2008, -6/+85Good thing I got the original 60gb version even though I was little skeptical at that time
- wem003, on 01/24/2008, -1/+64I'm surprised all the comments are just about the cancellation of the 80gb LIMITED EDITION Motorstorm Bundle.
My guess is with the Dual Shock 3 coming in March, they are just going to have a new bundle with that controller. - Nobi-Wan, on 01/24/2008, -7/+64Yeah, but their point is that there is currently no new PS3's that are PS2 compatible. If I ever get one once my PS2 fails I'd at least want to play my old PS2 games.
- daridave, on 01/24/2008, -30/+79wow, another change in distribution. Will SONY ever stop? Most insecure system distribution EVER.
- wild, on 01/24/2008, -12/+59If they put out a white PS3 at $299, I am there on "launch" date.
- DMeisterJ, on 01/24/2008, -12/+59Hmm... 40 gig one being $300 is becoming more and more of a reality.
- RoninKengo, on 01/24/2008, -6/+45And that's why I bought the 60gb when I heard they were discontinuing the 20gb and 60gb SKUs.
This is not a retarded decision on Sony's part though. Most likely they're keep the 40gb SKU as the basic cheap model, and probably put out a 120gb SKU, with all the bells and whistles of usb ports and hardware emulated backwards compatibility a la the 360 Elite. - mywhitenoise, on 01/24/2008, -4/+35It's easy as hell to upgrade the hard drive yourself. I have a 160GB drive in mine, took about 2 minutes to install.
- davidrools, on 01/24/2008, -2/+24speak for yourself. when you invest in a nice big 1080p tv, a lot of people want the setup to look halfway decent. And if you had friends, it's nice to have a good looking place to invite them.
and for practical purposes, the ps3 offers upscaling to 1080p and good wireless controllers.
and seriously, dude, bedsheets over the windows? enjoy that eternal darkness while you can. you'll have to grow up and move out of your parents' house someday. - rawg, on 01/24/2008, -1/+22I agree. I'm glad I got one of the 60GB versions while they were available. The nice thing is that it will upscale PS1/PS2 games as well, so it's even better than playing them on a PS2. Hopefully, they'll release some type of PS2 software emulation in the future.
- tokeio, on 01/24/2008, -1/+20Yup, exactly. The 80gb Limited Edition is what is being canceled... yikes, people jump to conclusions way to quickly. There will be a replacement SKU for sure. DS3 included isn't a bad quess.
- inactive, on 01/24/2008, -5/+23PS3 has awesome upscaling, and nigh-infinite virtual PS1/PS2 memory card capacity. It's quite handy having one virtual memory card per game series.
- Mitchl, on 01/24/2008, -3/+19My guess is that Sony is ready to roll out software based BC, so the 40gb will be BC as well.
Secondarily, since Sony is about to come out with movies and more d/l content through Home, I am guessing we will soon hear about a new 160gb or 250gb to replace the 80gb. Makes sense to me that Sony might want to have both hard drives larger than the comparable 360 drives. I do think that the price drop is also coming, to $299 and $399.
If Sony gets software BC in a $299 unit, then they may also drop the PS2 from the lineup.
Meanwhile, I am upgrading my 60gb to 250gb -- 250gb and full hardware based BC! - Dysheekie, on 01/24/2008, -3/+19I have a 60GB PS3 and I must say that I do play a lot of PS2 games and occasionally some PS1 games. If this thing ever died I figured they'd give me a replacement 80giger with albeit lesser backwards compatibility. Now I'm really scared, because I'd have to replace it with a non backwards compatible, lesser piece of hardware. Needless to say, I hope my PS3 doesn't die!!!
- removesstains, on 01/24/2008, -12/+28So far this only looks like an internal matter w bestbuy. Man it just goes to show you that majority of digg users don't actually read the articles. They just jump on the "hate PS3 ban wagon" cause its what the cool kids are doing.
- mywhitenoise, on 01/24/2008, -10/+25So then buy one? You can get one for $400 on sonystyle.com if you get their credit card.
- analbumcover96, on 01/24/2008, -3/+18Excuse me while I go hug my 250G PS3 :)
- itseffinkasey, on 01/24/2008, -3/+18I hope that they can add an update to the 40 gig so that it can play PS2 games. Is that possible? Also I feel screwed because I just bought my PS3 24 days ago.
- Psythik, on 01/24/2008, -11/+26It'll be a damn same if Sony really is going to discontinue PS2 compatibility. I was hoping that when I eventually got a PS3, that I'd be able to experience all the great PS2 games I missed out on from not ever owning a PS2 (like I did when I got my 360). I have even less of a reason to get a PS3 now.
- inactive, on 01/24/2008, -0/+14i sort of agree but my PS2 is getting tired, its only a matter of time before he dies and theres no way in hell i want to pay for repairs or get a new one when the PS3 should already allow BC
- smoger, on 01/24/2008, -2/+16people want BC so the ps2 can go in the closet. why have 2 systems set up if you can just have 1?
- aladrin, on 01/24/2008, -2/+16Sony has denied every rumor so far, even the ones that were 100% accurate, even up to the last day. Why would they tell the truth now?
- ChronicColonic, on 01/24/2008, -2/+16The space and hassle of having you plug and unplug a console comes to mind.
- glucoseboy, on 01/24/2008, -0/+12I don't have a PS2. BC was a major selling point for Sony and the Playstation 3.
- slicecom, on 01/24/2008, -8/+20Backwards compatibility is and was always over-rated, and the sales numbers prove it. The vast majority of people don't care to play old games on a new system. The 40GB sells WAY better than the 80GB. I'm glad to see Sony is looking at what's working for them and what isn't and adjusting accordingly.
- Jadhar, on 01/24/2008, -0/+12they can but they probably won't, they'll probably do what MS is doing with xbox originals and put out ps2 games for 10 bucks download
- PleaseJustDie, on 01/24/2008, -3/+14Well that odd, I haven't had any problems finding good games to play on my PS3.
- justice7, on 01/24/2008, -2/+13I was going to pick up an 80GB in a few months -- looks like i won't be picking one up afterall.
Main reason was for the BC + BluRay + Linux ... if they release a new sku thats backwards compat, and $300 .. i'm there. - jerrycan, on 01/24/2008, -5/+16Hey what's that burning smell?
- minoss, on 01/24/2008, -1/+11I agree entirely. I wonder how many people who claim the lack of backwards compatibility is such a huge negative actually use it on a regular basis. If i really want to play ps2 games after I purchase a ps3 it's not like my current ps2 has gone anywhere.
- sugarhigh4242, on 01/24/2008, -1/+11It can be confusing keeping track of the pros/cons for each sku, but when it comes to playing PS3 games, every system is equally suited. This is in contrast to Xbox360 where cutting the hard drive as a standard component means 360 development is either segmented or targeted at the lowest common denominator.
The stuff Sony is changing (wifi, card slots, HDD space, PS2 support) doesn't impact PS3 games. - UncleCrapper, on 01/24/2008, -2/+12Which model? Core, Pro, Elite or Arcade? With or without HDMI? Xenon, Zephyr or Falcon?
- WhereAmI, on 01/24/2008, -1/+11But you have enough time to log into Digg and tell us about it?
- johnhummel, on 01/24/2008, -3/+13That's why I got the 60 gb with the price drop - yeah, I could grab a $129 PS2 as well, but I like having one device, which has been handy as I play Persona 3 when I'm on the treadmill or the exercise bike, then I can watch a movie with the kids later on.
I'm rather annoyed at the "dropping PS2 support", and I don't see any signs they're going to try to fix it in the future. - FoxOrian, on 01/24/2008, -4/+14I'm still sad they discontinued the 60GB edition. It cost me $100 extra at the time, [got it during the price drop to $500,] but I have a pretty good storage amount for my divx video libraries, plays all PS1/PS2 titles, all 4 USB slots, and the card reader. Having faith in the PS3 early on actually paid off a little.
- dansmeek, on 01/24/2008, -0/+9careful though. the screws in the ps3 are "very easy" to strip. don't just use a phillips head. you gotta try a whole bunch of phillips heads and make sure that it has a "tight" grip on it. otherwise the screw will strip. i stripped 3 / 4 screws even knowing this and was careful. and it's a pain getting stripped screws out. they are tightly fastened and made with very soft metal
- WhereAmI, on 01/24/2008, -1/+10wem003, smartest thing I've read in these comments. I didn't even consider that until you mentioned it. Makes alot of sense. Maybe they will release DS3 a little early with the console and have the controllers come out in march still.
- form3hide, on 01/24/2008, -2/+11I'm guessing you don't have a girlfriend or wife that lives with you. And by the way, not everything is about you.
- hockey, on 01/24/2008, -0/+8Factual rebuttals to the matter at hand are not allowed in a flame war.
You should know that by now. - TypeEE, on 01/24/2008, -0/+8I agree that some people's theme at home is white, but mine is black and I would hope to have a black wii. There will always be people wanting a color that is not available. Of course, except Razr owners.
- Mast3rDigg3r, on 01/24/2008, -5/+13how are the ps3 games going to be played then?
- 1gunners4, on 01/24/2008, -8/+16Excuse me while I go hug my 80G PS3.
- davidrools, on 01/24/2008, -1/+9get a 60gb off of ebay or find it refurb'ed somewhere. It's 100% backwards compatible since it has the PS2 hardware built in (the 80gb ps3 uses software emulation and only works for something like 80% of ps2 games. there's a list of compatible games on sony's website)
- dansmeek, on 01/24/2008, -2/+10man i play tons of ps2 games. well i hadn't played videogames since 2001 so.... i missed out on metal gear franchise, devil may cry, god of war, resident evil 4, viewtiful joe, shadows of colossus, ffxii, and there's probably more. i literally bought 5 ps2 games in one trip and played them straight for 3 weeks until i beat them all. and upscaled games like god of war, resident evil, even metal gear... they look great. tons of fun. i love ps3 games too... but, i love last-gen games. they are using the hardware to the maximum, run at high framerates.... have such great gameplay.
i almost don't think that this "next-gen" stuff is ready yet. FPS get old. when you think of how ps2 games changed from the beginning to the end.... it gives me a sense that ps3 games in a few years will all be epic. - PhillAholic, on 01/24/2008, -0/+8Seriously what's with people? I thought it was common knowledge that the Motorstorm bundle was temporary. How long do you expect them to bundle the system with the same game?
- nicko68, on 01/24/2008, -1/+9That's ok, I laughed. :)
- Cyber_Akuma, on 01/24/2008, -3/+11Dammit! I was waiting until there was either a $400 version that could play PS2 games or there was several exclusives I was interested in, currently Resistance, Ratchet, and Motorstorm are the only games out that I care about.
Looks like I won't have a choice about having PS2 BC in my future PS3.
Why don't they work on writing a PS2 emulator that relies completely on software like they do with the slim PS2 and PS3 for PS1 games? The 80gig models already emulate everything except the GPU through software, I don't see how also adding software GPU emulation would be too hard, especially when now there will be no choice if one wants a BC-compatible PS3 or not. - spate, on 01/24/2008, -0/+7The 60GB has two PS2 chips for backwards compatibility, whereas the 80GB has only one of them. That extra chip is what makes the difference in being able to support those extra games, and in some cases, supporting the same games at full frame rate. (e.g., the Ratchet & Clank PS2 games.)
- Greyline108, on 01/24/2008, -3/+10What would BB gain if they just stopped selling the 80 gig? The memo says that they're not being replaced anymore (and yes, I red the article), so it does sound like something is indeed going on on Sony's end. And I'm not hating the PS3, I want a price drop to happen so I could afford one more easily.
- Pureeviljester, on 01/24/2008, -3/+10didn't they deny all the price drops?
oh well, we'll see i suppose. -
