- bobbybarista, on 08/31/2008, -3/+215the steps on how to do this are in the PS3 manual... this isn't some sort of crazy ass secret. RTFM people.
- joe90210, on 08/31/2008, -4/+135yes the HD on the PS3 can be replaced easily just like on a normal computer, much better than the 360's expensive proprietary *****
- harrison5394, on 08/31/2008, -3/+89If the only the 360 had this instead of charging 100 bucks for 20 gigs.
- Topher06, on 08/30/2008, -1/+55Just installed a 320gb hard drive, and it was dirt simple and easy to accomplish with no adverse issues. The only tricky thing is to have a USB flash drive or external hard drive with a Fat32 partition large enough to fit your content, and Windows doesn't make that easy by only creating up to a 32gb partition. Look for a 3rd party partition tool if you know you have more then 32gb of data. The PS3 will not recognize any external drive that is not Fat32.
After backing up the PS3, you just slip out the old drive, take off its harness and put it on the new drive, and slip it back in. Power up your PS3 and it formats the drive in under a minute and is ready to use again. Plug in your backup drive and restore your old data.
At first I thought I had lost all my trophies, but I just had to run the games that supported trophies again so they would be restored. - sklter84, on 08/31/2008, -7/+56Next on Gamepro they'll tell you how to install other sized hard drives that aren't 500gb.
Seriously why is this on the frontpage? - Ytse, on 08/30/2008, -3/+49I guess the there's no issue with the PS3 recognizing the new hard drive? I've never done something like this before; so I'm not sure how that works. But if that really is all there is to it, this might be the simplest hard drive replacement job ever.
- Awla, on 08/31/2008, -1/+43Just in case anybody was wondering, swapping your hard drive does not void your system warranty.
- anyone4apint, on 08/31/2008, -3/+33My Version:
1) Take out old hard drive
2) Put in new hard drive
The real version if the site goes down:
Step #1:
Purchase the Samsung M6 500GB hard drive (widely available online for around $230). Important note: The M6 is the only 500GB internal hard drive that will fit into the PS3. Use the PS3's Backup function to transfer saves and other content to a USB drive.
Step #2:
Unplug the PS3 and ground yourself. Open the PS3's hard drive access port, located on the side of the unit, with your fingernail.
Step #3:
Carefully unscrew the blue screw using the correct screwdriver bit (Philips Precise) using gentle pressure, taking care not to strip the screw. Pull out the metal hinge, and slide the hard drive tray out.
Step #4:
Unscrew the four screws that attach the hard drive to the metal tray, and remove the old hard drive (place old drive in anti-static bag).
Step #5:
Attach the new Samsung 500GB hard drive to the tray, replacing the four screws from the previous step. Slide the hard drive tray back into the PS3 port, and snap the metal hinge back into place, then replace the blue screw. Close the access port, power up your PS3, and replace the date stored on your USB drive. Voila -- you're done! Enjoy your massive storage space. - otakugeek, on 08/31/2008, -1/+24You can copy the saves over to a USB drive and you should have a backup of that music anyways.
- inactive, on 08/31/2008, -5/+27Yes, and according to the devs it will look better than the 360 version
- PenileCommander, on 08/31/2008, -1/+22*****, what did my welcome do this time?

- selrahc, on 08/31/2008, -0/+17Or people who like laughing at the crazy translations found in some manuals.
- ChinezePanda, on 08/31/2008, -0/+17Stuck in 750 into my PS3. Just for the hell of it.
And dude.. if I could digg you a billion times.. I would...
***** cant stand my 14 gig worth of storage on my 360. - Darkaged, on 08/31/2008, -2/+19Someone call an ambulance, this guy just got burned.
- gweedo767, on 08/31/2008, -1/+17Adding a new drive to PS3 is stupid simple. Take out 5 screws (all phillips, 1 normal size, 4 like smaller glasses style screws) and that is all you gotta do. If you want to backup your save games/installs/movies/ect so so you don't have to reinstall everything, just use an external USB drive. I put in a 320GB drive about a month ago and it was crazy simple.
- xdevit, on 08/31/2008, -1/+17RTFM ...
Also "Supercharge", no.. supercharge = overclocking, adding 20 new CPU's... ect.
This more less just hooking up a trailer. - bigolblob, on 08/31/2008, -7/+22We're digging you down because you seriously use/buy AAC, silly!
- inactive, on 08/31/2008, -1/+16That's crazy stupid simple, man.
- sinembarg0, on 08/31/2008, -1/+16People who'd like to use their products to the fullest extent.
- Ajajadude, on 08/31/2008, -1/+16Step 1A: Take a breath and stop being stupid.
- mywhitenoise, on 08/31/2008, -2/+167200 RPM don't cut loading times drastically, in fact they heat up the PS3. I'll take the extra .5 seconds it takes to load over heat and loud fans.
- damack, on 08/31/2008, -1/+15Like joe90210 above said me it works out of the box and isn't a problem but I thought I should also add that you can get a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch converter and the PS3 will work with a 3.5 inch hard drive. Biggest I've seen tried is 750GB and it worked fine.
Putting another HDD is something Sony thoughtfully left as an option it doesn't void the warranty, isn't difficult to do and works out of the box with any 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch hard drive upto 750Gb(and maybe more but thats the biggest I've seen it work with so far) - Blindside, on 08/31/2008, -0/+13They tell you how to do this in the PS3 manual when you get it. So no, it doesn't void your warranty.
- cifrancgx, on 08/31/2008, -0/+13Yup super easy. The instructions are in the PS3 manual. I upgraded my original 60GB with a 320GB drive. I was able to backup all my files and restore them once I had the 320GB drive in. I wish my Xbox 360 did it like this, but MS makes you buy their very expensive $180 120GB drive. I paid $180 for my 320GB drive!
- Dymphna, on 08/31/2008, -0/+12I would love to see a 100,000 rpm drive, I think my PS3 would liftoff and fly around my living room.
- bewareofmoose, on 08/31/2008, -1/+13...I guess... you could use it for that... I guess...
- twodollars, on 08/31/2008, -0/+11I find it funny that with a 98%+ literacy rate in the USA and a Digg spell-check, some people can't spell.
- BattleScars, on 08/31/2008, -3/+14Less money? Your first point is 'get PC'. That alone would cost more.
- Binome, on 08/31/2008, -0/+11dugg simply because this article will be a perfect example once someone fixes the education system in america.
Steps to quit failing at the internet:
1. Numbers do not replace words. 2 is not to.
2. Download firefox. Little red lines mean you've screwed up.
3. Incoherent walls of text are not allowed unless written by someone with 1/8th of a brain. - Blindside, on 08/31/2008, -0/+11Depends on your region, but yeah you can. Also, downloading full version ps3 games like Warhawk and Gran Turismo 5 from the PSN store can lead to a lack of space pretty easily.
- Thorpe, on 08/31/2008, -0/+11I'm annoyed that they don't sell a 60 GB hard drive separate for the Xbox 360. Then again, if they did, it would probably be an insane amount of money to spend anyway. No way I will pay for their 120 GB hard drive. Proprietary crap.
- dandonia, on 08/31/2008, -1/+12not really a pain in the arse for me, I will do it the first day I get the machine.
- MJG2007, on 08/31/2008, -4/+15They need to dress it up a little to make it sound more challenging.
Step #1:
Purchase the Samsung M6 500GB hard drive (widely available online for around $230). Important note: The M6 is the only 500GB internal hard drive that will fit into the PS3. Use the PS3's Backup function to transfer saves and other content to a USB drive.
Note: The model numbers on the drive must not contain the numbers 5 or 0 and the letters G and B must be in BLACK only on the box.
Step #2:
Unplug the PS3 and ground yourself. Open the PS3's hard drive access port, located on the side of the unit, with your fingernail.
Note: You must also text the code PS3 to 83457 on your cell phone. It is very important that you do this between the hours of 5 am and 5:45 am Aleutian Standard time. Failure to do so will VOID YOUR WARRANTY.
Step #3:
Carefully unscrew the blue screw using the correct screwdriver bit (Philips Precise) using gentle pressure, taking care not to strip the screw. Pull out the metal hinge, and slide the hard drive tray out.
Note: The correct screwdriver is found only through select online retailers.
Step #4:
Unscrew the four screws that attach the hard drive to the metal tray, and remove the old hard drive (place old drive in anti-static bag).
Note: The old drive must be buried in a cleft of an oak tree at midnight during a full moon. Failure to do this will cause a rupture in the space time continuum which will VOID YOUR WARRANTY!
Note: Before sliding the drive into position, it is important that you place the drive on static free, frictionless surface in a vacuum chamber with a floppy disk for at least ten minutes.
Voila -- you're done! Enjoy your massive storage space. - arizonabay, on 08/31/2008, -1/+11What? No. Step 2 is opening the HDD access port.
- blackrave, on 08/31/2008, -0/+10Try the program mkv2vob: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=131782
It muxes your video files to vob files playable by the PS3, and also features a split option for splitting them into 1 GB, 2 GB or 4 GB chunks so they fit on your USB drive or HDD.
Very useful application. - Dymphna, on 08/31/2008, -2/+12Jealous 360 owner? Or an HD-DVD early adopter? Which one?
- n0odles, on 08/31/2008, -5/+15And this doesn't void warranty? If know if you so much as touch the Xbox360 without gloves it voids the warranty.
- cthellis, on 08/31/2008, -2/+11*anti-Sony fanboy comment here*
- volacide, on 08/31/2008, -1/+10Mywhitenoise you clearly didn't backup your saved game files. Before you save anything, yes, I know you can't copy your RockBand save file to any external device but you can still save your RockBand save file by using the Backup Utility in the PS3's system settings.
I just did this myself having installed a 250gb HDD just yesterday. What I did was delete all my game data, videos, music, pictures, and left everything else and managed to back up ALL that information and it only ammounted to 400mbs.
So i ended up saving my PS2 and PS1 saves and all PS3 saves. Unfortunately you can't copy PS1/PS2 saves to external devices either and since I didn't have those memory cards anymore and some of the saves were brand new I just chose to use the Backup Utility. Works like a charm and you don't need a large external memory source to backup that kind of sensitive data since it's so small. - vibrate, on 08/31/2008, -0/+9why not buy two 1TB drives?
- Dymphna, on 08/31/2008, -0/+9No, you have to take out the flux capacitor first, or your PS3 will implode into a black hole and destroy the very fabric of space and time.
- NuttyVirus, on 08/31/2008, -0/+9I think people these days would rather see a demonstration then read. Just my two cents.
- mynameistux, on 08/31/2008, -0/+9you can find out some cool new things that you didn't know a device could do, when you read the manual (my toothbrush has auto shutoff.)
- shredswithpiks, on 08/31/2008, -2/+11streaming music and movies to the PS3 is way more awesome (and by way more awesome I mean exactly the same thing except I prefer the PS3's interface and out of the box wifi)
- Evi1d33d, on 08/31/2008, -6/+15Who reads the manual?
- Septimus, on 08/31/2008, -1/+9@mywhitenoise: You are obviously too stupid to use the backup utility which puts everything onto an external usb drive (all PS3 content is chunked to under 4GB no matter the file size overall so backs up fine to fat32).
I just plugged a 500GB FAT32 drive into the usb, backed up, replaced the drive with a 250GB (was a 60GB), restored with the backup utility. That was it. Never had to delete anything. - cthellis, on 08/31/2008, -1/+9You get excited very easily.
- inactive, on 08/31/2008, -6/+14Step one: buy harddrive
Step two: remove old harddrive
Step three: install new harddrive
