- Bodhesatva, on 10/10/2007, -37/+179So, they've sold 4.48 million in the first 9 months of the console's life, and they expect to sell 10 million in the next 9? They expect a 250% increase in sales? Uh, that doesn't happen, folks. Go look at the sales trends of consoles in history. You don't see consoles suddenly start selling 250% better all of a sudden (you do get spikes that last, say, a month, but not actual dramatic changes in sales trends that are permanent).
Not because of price cuts.
Not because of great games.
Not because of good press.
250% increases in sales simple never happen. I still remember when the N64 came out, and we got Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, and Goldeneye all within the first year. And guess what? The N64 sales went down, and down, and down. What Sony is asking for is magic. It bucks all historical trends. - Mogwlaii, on 10/10/2007, -36/+164Sold to retailers not sold to customers. Learn to read!
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/10/2007, -23/+80If they dropped the price to $150, they MIGHT be able to make it.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -12/+55These stories bring out the fanboy morons like rats to ***** cheese.
Forget the "my console will beat up your console" argument for just a second and come back down to reality.
How many units did the 360 sell at this point last year? And how many "epic" games did it have? Oh, just as many as the PS3. The 360 didn't have 6 million units sold until Oct 2006. Gears of War was the first major hit. Sure, there were other fun games along the way, but nothing that stood out as "omg orgasm."
The blockbuster games don't come out for about a year after the console drops. Same happened with the Wii, and the PS2, and everything else.
I also see people calling Sony evil, but what do you think MS is? News flash: none of these companies are your friends. They are not doing you any favors. They operate on one goal: optimize profit and consume as much of the market as they can with their own standards.
PS3, sure, it's ***** expensive and tries to push bluray on everyone, but keep in mind that MS is doing the same thing AND nickel and diming you to ***** death. You just don't realize it.
$100 for a wireless adapter? $40 for the battery charger? $45 a year PER live account? $200 for the HD-DVD player? $200 for a 120 GB proprietary drive? $10 for 4 ***** Gears of War maps. Oh, and good luck playing non-WMV movies on the MC extender. Actually, I think a recent updated added more formats to play, but still 90% of the videos you download, you cannot stream without a transcoder.
At least Sony has the decency to give you control over your next-gen console (installing Linux, your own hard drive, etc) despite forcing you to buy a bluray player.
So take your head out of the sand and realize that despite which console you purchased, you're getting locked into something that you might not like.
I own both the 360 and the PS3, like em both, but also realize that ALL of these next gen systems are designed to make you spend more money on the console than you have in the past. - dualscreenman, on 10/10/2007, -5/+45The handheld market is substantially different than the console market.
- Cerialthriller, on 10/10/2007, -7/+45the DS doesn't cost $500
- TypeEE, on 10/10/2007, -1/+38100% reduction in price means free, 250% reduction in price means Sony will give me $900 to own a ps3?
- ViciousDotOrg, on 10/10/2007, -12/+48Better have some REAL price cuts planned for the next 8 months.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+36and I'm "aiming" to bang Jessica Simpson and Jessica Alba at the same time by March '08.
- Tobark, on 10/10/2007, -16/+44Good luck with that...
- BESTenemy, on 10/10/2007, -12/+38250% increase in sales would only be possible through 250% reduction in price.
- scoot2006, on 10/10/2007, -6/+29Because it's only important if it has 3 (count them, !!! three) exclamation points at the end of the title.
- betterth, on 10/10/2007, -8/+30You're a retard.
Monday: Amazon sells 10 PS3's.
Tuesday: They announce the drop, and Amazon sells 5000 of the lower priced consoles
Wednesday: Amazon sells 50 PS3's
But oh wait! in a single day they sold 2500% more than the previous day!
(My math may be wrong, but the idea stands. Just because a news announcement causes a very, very transient boost in sales does not mean that such a drastic, long term increase will happen. Sure, 2500% seems like a lot, but in my numbers it's only 5000 consoles. The 250% they're asking for is around 9.5 MILLION consoles. BIIIIIG DIFFERENCE) - maxtypezero, on 10/10/2007, -8/+29indeed. Xbox 360 hasn't even sold that many at $400.
- dualscreenman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23An example of a better way to show your point is two threads down from here.
- t3hbagel, on 10/10/2007, -30/+49Buried as inaccurate. Sony spin.
- RoroCo, on 10/10/2007, -12/+30Great comment Bodhesatv. I might add also that the 9 months that you are using for your baseline was the launch period that fell during the winter holidays. A 250% increase on consoles year to year are near impossible. A 250% increase from this period is impossible.
Now... they can reduce their consoles to 300 dollars and offer free HD TVs with every purchase to hit those numbers, but we all know that will not happen. - 0two, on 10/10/2007, -9/+27Is it just me, or is the PS3 actually starting to look pretty appealing? It's a bit pricey still, but you are getting a lot more for your dollar (WiFi, free online, blu-ray, reliability, more graphical potential). Not to mention some good games out and some awesome ones coming. Resistance looks pretty neat, LittleBigPlanet looks good, MGS4 obviously will kick ass, Lair looks awesome. At there is plenty of 3rd party support with Assassin's Creed, CoD4, GTA4, VF5 etc. on the way. There are also some neat download titles coming.
If anything the Wii is the console that is really lacking right now. There aren't really a lot of good games on the way for the Wii besides the regular Nintendo sequels. - Flamekebab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Considering they're making a loss on each unit, I would think they care a LOT how many are in the hands of consumers.
Consumers without PS3s aren't know for buying PS3 games.. - acurism, on 10/10/2007, -6/+23Actually, you are far off on that one.
I would say that a large majority of people waiting on MGS4 still have yet to buy the PS3. - omnirusa, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22"14.5 million by March 08!!!"
"14.5 million by April 2008."
Your title/body contradicts itself... - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20PS3 may fail as a gaming console, but many of the sales projections for PS3 are fueled by the sales forecasts of HD-player sales. PS3 holds 95% of all Blu-ray sales (the expected formatwar winner). And sales of HD-players are expected to increase to 40 million in 2010. Based on that, if you look at PS3 as a HD-Player, which it is, a large portion of the HD-Player market will be buying the PS3 for playback in the next couple years, because it is as cheap as the other players but offers gaming as well.
- Pureeviljester, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18it did go up...
- obijohn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Bodhesatva, nice analysis. But that's a 123% increase in sales needed, not 250% (twice as many of something is a 100% increase, not 200%).
- reed311, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Yes, however, if those units do not sell well; the retailer will not be ordering any more from Sony or at least a reduced amount.
- xboxing, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19I just bought a PS3 couple weeks ago, so I'm contributing to those numbers. It was the $100 price drop and the 5 free Blu-ray movies that did it for me. Up until then, I was on the fence. I also have a few friends who've followed suit. I've never bought a Sony console before (alwasy been an Xbox gamer) but I'm really glad I bought the PS3... it comes across to me as much more of an open and flexible system and sophisticated in terms of what you can do with it. I also like the fact that it's a heck of a lot quieter than my 360 wind tunnel. The really good games will come in time... but for now, I'm having a lot fun with the downloadable titles, the few good games on shelves now and the media functionality (that part of it kills the 360).
- 0two, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Agreed, it's good to see some people who aren't complete and utter tools when it comes to fanboyism.
- JlmAWP, on 10/10/2007, -16/+29Man, bail on those stocks around February, because those numbers are going to come in WAY below what they predict. Again, they'll count SHIPPED units, which could very well be 14.5 million. Unfortunately, the public won't know the difference, but retail shelf space will. There are gonna be a lot of these things collecting dust on shelves for the next year.
- jedi0utkast, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Yep! sounds about right.. we can be sure if that happens the will have a install base consistent of the entire human race.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/10/2007, -28/+40Don't digg him down, I'd buy a PS3 for $150, but not a penny more.
- kkaabboomm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12because of the note in their financial statement saying starting next quarter they are changing their report numbers to numbers sold, not shipped (granted, before, they reported numbers shipped, including those in sony warehouses not sold to retailers -- their new figure will NOT include those, only those shipped and sold to retailers.)
- Langford, on 10/10/2007, -6/+18I'm sure even Sony knows it's impossible. They probably just want to sound confident to try to get more games from 3rd party developers.
- GameFace, on 10/10/2007, -8/+20So, this is quarter 1 results(weakest consumer electronics quarter), last time I checked thats 4 months... not 9. I am starting to think the digg community especially at this time of day and year(being summer time) is composed of 13 yr olds that are console fanboys of one side or the other. Sony has 12 months left to complete the 2008 1st quarter. Plus quarter 4 which is the strongest quarter for consumer electronics.
- lordtyros, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14I'll take two, please.
- Eddible, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Funnily enough, not everybody lives on their own.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/10/2007, -21/+32Who cares who it's sold to. If they sell to retailers they still make the money. After it goes from retailers to consumers, the only one profiting then is the retailer. So if they sell 10+ million to retailers they did their job. You morons act like they are going to have 10 million sitting on the shelf. Plus most numbers are given by retailer purchases.
- Jaymoon, on 10/10/2007, -10/+21Except that for the most part, diehard MGS fans already own a PS3...
Too little too late I say. - MonsterChaOS, on 10/10/2007, -18/+28and how many million are still sitting on the shelves of the stores that bought them?
I don't see them hitting this goal any time soon. - iceperson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Someday when you're a grown up you'll realize how stupid that question is...
- nwm3221, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12I just bought a PS3 and I think it's a much better deal right now, especially with the $100 price drop. Some really good games are coming out and it can always be used as a blu-ray player... assuming you have the tv to get the most out of it.
PS3 is a pretty good investment... Sony will sell a lot more... but I doubt they will reach their Q1 goal in 2008. - jeffabs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Sounds like a man who can't afford an HDTV ...
- JEWestbrookJR, on 10/10/2007, -15/+2410 million in the next 8 months, eh? Are they going to start giving them away?
- jeffabs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I bought my samsung almost a year ago specifically for the PS3/blu ray player. It was worth it. The games/movies are unreal on the setup ... even the PSN games such as Nucleus, Super Stardust HD, Blast Factor, etc. Throw in the Planet Earth blu ray set, holy orgasmic visuals!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9One for each person in the household who wants to play online with their own profile. If you're the only person playing the console then I guess it doesn't matter much, but there are situations where many people play on one console (kids, spouses, etc).
It *should* be $45 a year per console with as many registered users as you want, but no, it's per profile. (Actually, it should be free, but that's another debate altogether.)
To my knowledge, you can't register multiple profiles to play on XBL under one single gold subscription. If I'm wrong, by all means correct me.
Otherwise, it's ***** nickel and diming. - pulyx, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11The PS3 Is really appealing due to the fact that it'll have almost everything the 360 will have and it doesn't go kaput so easy.
And there are good games on the way
But i think the PS3 will be the N64 of this gen, good, but with a expensive media, a very few but very classics - givinupthefight, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10I'd buy a PS3 in a flash but they'd be losing so much money on that they would prob. not ever make a PS4, remember Dreamcast? Sega lost too much on every system sold and not enough games to keep it alive, thus it was Sega's last console.
- PueSi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Bu they don't make money from the ps3 they lose money. They'll only make money if a lot of actual customer buy it and buy games.
- ben_nushmut, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Or, more accurately, the 360 just breaks a LOT.
- samdu, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Microsoft also uses "shipped" as "sold" figures. And they missed their target sales numbers as well. I don't see a difference.
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/10/2007, -8/+16Alright, no need to freak out. I'm sure SOMEONE will buy your PS3 off you.
Sales to retailers is a useless figure. Sales to customers indicates demand. -
