- Scotty87, on 07/16/2008, -0/+79I don't see why these small things are a big deal. My PS3 has 250GB in it (Originally the 80GB version). Look up the PS3 if you don't have one yet. On the left side there's a small door you can easily pop open. There's a 2.5" Hard Drive in there. Take out the blue screw and use the small lever to slide to the right and then out. You may replace this drive with any 2.5" Drive (Any laptop hard drive). I bought the 250GB for 80$. It is a SATA drive FYI and also suggest to get one at 5400RPM and not 7200RPM to keep the PS3 cooler. Once done you turn on the PS3 it will format and your all done!.
I'd suggest backing everything up before and restoring it after.
Best part is - doesn't void the warranty at all :) - philipz78, on 07/15/2008, -1/+56Doesn't announcing it now, but releasing it later, keep everyone from buying the 40GB version currently on sale?
- rockrapdude, on 07/16/2008, -1/+52There is a difference between GoW and GoW.
- amrush4th, on 07/15/2008, -1/+46So, what about the backward compatible current 80gig?
- Zelmatic, on 07/16/2008, -2/+47Honestly, if there's no backwards compatibility, what's the point? I mean, I understand the price drop and all, but the main reason most people buy the 80GB PS3 instead of the 40GB PS3 is the backwards compatibility.
- matchb, on 07/16/2008, -4/+41Engadget made a good point saying the new 60GB Xbox 360 SKU + $50 for Xbox live is basically same price, so it really comes down to the games.
Gears of Wars 2 or God of War 3 ? - CaffeinePowered, on 07/16/2008, -2/+32Please re-release a version with the Emotion Engine chip
- cthellis, on 07/16/2008, -2/+31That's only talking about one year's worth of Live, of course... ;-)
Meanwhile, it's more like:
Gears 2 or Resistance 2 (or perhaps Uncharted, if you prefer cover-based tactical combat. No MP, tho.)
God of War 2 or Ninja Gaiden 2?
Splinter Cell: Conviction or MGS4?
Gran Turismo or Forza Motorsport?
FFXIII or... um... FFXIII? ;-)
etc., etc... - soundsofreason, on 07/16/2008, -0/+26Sixaxis is being discontinued, so most likely, Dualshock 3.
- WhereAmI, on 07/15/2008, -3/+27From the sounds of it, its a 40GB PS3 with a 80GB hard drive.
- smacksaw, on 07/16/2008, -0/+24The size of the HD is a total non-factor for me. If it's a limited machine compared to other models, a $50 hard drive will never fix those shortcomings.
I'll cry if my 60gb model ever dies. - ATLien74, on 07/16/2008, -1/+25I have an 80 Gig, and yes it is backwards compatible. All the GTA's work on it. I think the difference is the 60 Gig had the actual chip from the ps2 built in it, but the 80 gig doesn't, it uses some type of software emulation for backwards compatibility.
- cyberwarriorx, on 07/16/2008, -0/+17Actually, the correct quote was: "the same functionality of the 40 GB... with twice the storage"
- Nohpex, on 07/16/2008, -2/+18all ps3 models are BC with ps1 games
- conkers209, on 07/16/2008, -3/+16Damn you people! You bitch about people waiting for the new 80 GB model and now people won't buy the 40 GB model? I have a Wii and I'm stuck with the stupid 512 MB of memory, every new WiiWare I download, I have to delete half of the things on the memory just for the damn game to fit. At lease some of you guys problems is having to much storage with the PS3! To be fare, I have all three so I'm just bitching about the stupid memory issue the Wii has.
- theclaw1, on 07/16/2008, -0/+12One important reason to want a backwards compatible model is if you own an HDTV. Some PS1 and PS2 games look much better when played on PS3, since PS3 has superior upscaling than most TVs do.
Not to mention that "240p over component" issue, affecting games like Disgaea. Which PS3 also fixed. - Jektal, on 07/16/2008, -0/+11Also, if you want one Playstation in your living room, and not 2.
- johnmalc, on 07/15/2008, -4/+15Yep. Probably why they're not ready to announce the new 40GB for $299.
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+11You know the games actually use Blu Ray, right?
- ATLien74, on 07/16/2008, -0/+10Just put a new HD in it. It won't voide your warranty and it's easy to do. Upgrade it to a 300gig.
- DarkShroud, on 07/16/2008, -3/+13I'm hoping that was just poor wording and it is backwards compatible. We'll know soon enough once the official press report comes out.
I never regretted buying a 60gig at launch but I'm always feeling better about it. - AntBing, on 07/16/2008, -0/+10Only the people who are paying attention will wait. Little Timmy will whine so much that mommy will just go buy the one on the shelf, not knowing she could get a better unit in a few months.
- timusca, on 07/16/2008, -5/+15No, it won't fit you no-talent, unoriginal assclown.
- cthellis, on 07/16/2008, -0/+10Umm... They are using laptop drives, you know.
- chimaera2005, on 07/16/2008, -0/+10@boobsbr
It's not *that* confusing, but wikipedia has an easy-to-read chart here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3#Retail_ ...
I can tell you that I have owned a fully* backwards compatible PS3 for about 6 months now and about 5 "must keep" PS2 games. I have used the PS2 functionality maybe 3 times, and even then it was just to see if it worked.
*The games I can't play I don't care/know about and it's fairly irrelevant. - timusca, on 07/16/2008, -0/+9@supersickie
You're wrong... I am using it to its full potential. I have a 750GB hard drive that I stream all movies from to the PS3. Just because I'm not keeping the movies on the PS3 hdd doesn't mean I'm not using it. - BedPost, on 07/16/2008, -0/+9Goddamn. I so wish MS didn't nickel and dime us 360 owners with the damn HDDs. $100 for a 120gb HDD? Yeah, I'll just stick with my 20gb.
Hands down, my biggest complaint about the 360 right there. - ATLien74, on 07/16/2008, -3/+12Dont buy a 360 then.
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+9Actually, we CAN fault you.
I'm burying your comment, and I'm also burying your submission as spam. - da_bradler, on 07/16/2008, -1/+9The original ones are the best ones, before they ripped all the features out to save money.
- roxya, on 07/16/2008, -2/+10Well you just blew off an FPS, a 3rd person shooter, a stealth action game and a platformer/shooter. I have to ask... do you actually like any kind of games?
Say sports and I'll kick you in the face. - KJSatz, on 07/16/2008, -0/+8It's a SIXAXIS with the rumble.
- o0joshua0o, on 07/16/2008, -3/+10Sony needs to work on releasing a bare-bones system at the minimum possible price. Some of us don't care about all the extras, and just want a machine that plays games.
- supersickie, on 07/16/2008, -2/+9Then I must say you're not using the PS3 to it's full potential; the beauty of this machine is filling it up with great movies since Sony has acquired both DivX and Xvid codecs. Use that space; it's meant to be so much more than a next generation gaming console.
- cthellis, on 07/16/2008, -0/+7Wait, $100...? It's still $180 retail right now. (Amazon has it for that, too. Used to hover at ~$150, but is back up to $180.)
It's the 20GB drive that's $100. - da_bradler, on 07/16/2008, -1/+7Pretty sure the only reason they announced it was to match the 360 doing the exact same thing yesterday with there 359.99 20gig going up to 60 gigs and the 20gig going down to 299.99
seems like a last minute type of thing - inactive, on 07/16/2008, -1/+7when is that coming out?
- NaziHatinChimp, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6Calm down guy
- bilbravo, on 07/16/2008, -1/+7If you just want to play your favorite PS2 games, why not just buy a PS2? And if you have favorites, don't you already have a PS2?
- sonnysavage, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6Someone who hasn't seen Office Space? I thought those people were extinct.
- Fallout911, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6I have a ***** load of PS2 games and this sucks ass.
- Jektal, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6Exactly. I bought an 80gb version the day after it came out just because my only options were that or a 40gb with no backwards compatibility and the Sixaxis. I still haven't played a minute of MGS4.
- krische, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5Yeah, but they had to make it cheaper, everyone was complainig it was too expensive and not buying it.
- timusca, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5Agreed. I have the 40GB and regret not waiting for the 80GB to come back with MGS4. I don't come close to using the 40GB, so 40GB of additional space is useless.
But putting that aside, it is the same price as the 40GB model... so its a free upgrade nonetheless. And I'd bet the backward compatible 80GB model will still be available for $500 but only with the MGS4 bundle. - bigfootindy, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5Is this still going to have the Sixaxis or will it come with Dualshock 3?
- Jordan777, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5CrudeDarkness
All of the PS3 models are 100% BC with PS1 games. The 40gb (now 80gb) is not compatible with PS2 games and the old 80gb is not 100% but it does play quite a few of them. I think it gets better as more and more firmware updates come out. That last bit is just speculation though. I'm not actually sure. - minoss, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5So you own a bunch of your favorite ps2 games but down own a ps2?
Who the ***** still wants to play ps2 games that doesn't already own a ps2? really, is there anyone out there? - feliks2, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5Gran Turismo
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5they said that it only will be one sku which is they 80 gig
- ejhdigdug, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5You don't have to wait, it's not backward compatible. The 40G isn't BC and this is basically the 40G with a bigger hard drive.
I think they're dropping the BC so that they can resell you the same games on line. -
