- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -11/+62I don't get why people are so against this game.
Everyone on digg drools all over Blizzard games except this one.
It's really a damn fun game, very well made MMO compared to ANYTHING else out there right now.
Granted it used to be a ridiculous grindfest back in the day, but they've branched out quite a bit and have given everyone various opportunities to progress without devoting your life to the damn thing. - Noxat, on 08/28/2008, -7/+48With fresh, updated graphics my 70 Tauren hunter will look sexier than ever dancing nearly-naked on top of the Orgrimmar mail box!
- mrb4b00, on 08/28/2008, -1/+28Like counterstrike,d2, starcraft, warcraft, ragnarok online, etc. games that are following the "easy to play, hard to master" and low system specs principles tend to stay long and healthy.
Blizzard has mastered the art on making addictive video games. It's a shame that games nowadays always focus more on raw graphics than gameplay. - deltaz, on 08/28/2008, -5/+28About time. As long as the game can still be played on low end machines, of course.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -6/+29either you're a geek - or you're a fanboy. either way - EPIC FAIL.
- wettestwillie, on 08/28/2008, -3/+25Eve Online added a completely new graphics engine and a premium client with entirely updated models and textures AND its cross compatible with the old client for people with old machines.
If a small game developer in Iceland can do it then I'm sure one of the largest game companies in the world can. - Stalks, on 08/28/2008, -1/+19Everything gets boring eventually. I played since launch for 18 months, spent plenty of time getting PvP and PvE rewards until I had almost everything for 2 characters.
But then you sit in the city..... with nothing to do. The game turns into a grind collecting materials for flasks/rep/cash and a graphical chat client. - LMN8R, on 08/28/2008, -2/+18Am I living in a dream-world? What's so hard to understand about my post?
Addextra graphical layers at the top-end for machines that can handle it and it shouldn't affect the low-end graphics settings at all. Keep the low-end graphics settings looking identical to what they are now, add support for extra optional graphics effects at the high end for people whose machines can handle it. Viola, no harm done, people who are currently running WoW continue to have no problem running WoW.
Was that really so difficult to grasp from my original post? - tastybeard, on 08/28/2008, -0/+16Mom Bathroom!
get me more hotpockets - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -2/+17http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topi ...
- speneko, on 08/27/2008, -20/+35I am surprised at how popular this game still is... Oh well, keeping up with the times is a good thing i guess.
- dmightx, on 09/21/2008, -1/+13Look at this
"Sorry but i've been playing in the same 4 battlegrounds for years. It isn't time for new graphics. it is time for new GAME."
Yep guess who said that... Yep sycx1 himself said this. I don't think he should be talking about epic failures... - thePTS, on 08/28/2008, -0/+11@Stalks:
"But then you sit in the city..... with nothing to do. The game turns into a grind collecting materials for flasks/rep/cash and a graphical chat client."
dugg for being completely and utterly right. The game was both rewarding and fun up to level 40, but after that, it's just repeat repeat repeat repeat. You aren't enjoying yourself at this point, you're just stuck in a cognitive trap where you'll do anything to experience something new.
Grinding for 2 months to get +5 stamina +5 spirit on your chestpiece? JUST SAY NO. - darkmist, on 08/28/2008, -1/+11Have you missed something that makes your comment relevant? just bury him and move on.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -7/+17whatever keeps the $$ rolling in...
btw, their web design team pwns face. - Shaflugi, on 08/28/2008, -1/+8No *****, but I'm sure they'd leave the lower quality graphics as an option. This isn't a console game where you're locked in to whatever graphic quality hey give you.
- dmightx, on 09/21/2008, -1/+8I don't know much about computers but WoW lets you choose which layers to show. You can run WoW with basic graphics but you can also add more graphics to your computer which further strain the computer performance.
I think he means that basically they should allow you to add more graphics as an option. Meaning you would still be able to use the basic graphics if you need to. - Shirleycakes, on 08/28/2008, -0/+7I take you mean N, and not Commodore.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -2/+8i'd suspect the hard-core fans to be the ones with the epic computers who'd love a gfx update
its the casual 12yo playing on the family computer who'd suffer most - Logicexe, on 08/28/2008, -0/+6Doesn't matter much anyway. Most PC games give you the option to scale back the graphics by lowering the resolution, lowering texture quality, turning of effects, decreasing the draw distance etc.
If you have a lame computer just lower the graphics settings. - sarchosis, on 08/28/2008, -6/+12Even with updates, WoW will probably never be one of the more graphically advanced games. Wrath of the Lich King is just now adding dynamic shadows. Luckily Blizzard has an awesome (or at least decent) art team; I couldn't stand EQII because everything looked so bland and uninteresting, despite the "better" graphics.
- ismschisms, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5How can something fall sharply over time?
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -5/+10Meh...
There are serious flaws in that argument. Graphics definitely don't matter as much as game play, but it definitely can improve the experience. Just because there are Crappy XBox games and Excellent SNES games doesn't mean anything at all - There are Excellent XBox games and Crappy SNES games too. - RomulusX86, on 08/28/2008, -5/+10Asheron's Call suffered from outdated graphics, but still had superb gameplay (running for 9 years now); needless to say the population levels fell sharply over time. A slight retouch here and there on the aesthetic side is paramount in the game industry nowadays.
- datastorageguy, on 08/28/2008, -4/+9Wow is a waste of time. Sorry, had to say it.
- Logicexe, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5Just don't park your Kodo on top of said mailbox. Damn Kodos.
- Tunguska, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4But, like painting the bridge, its necessary.
Necessary otherwise the game will rust and fall to pieces. - Tonkatsu, on 08/28/2008, -1/+5WoW is a hell of a drug.
- p3ngwin, on 08/28/2008, -1/+5thanks for that, here's another vid i found that illustrates the shadows, and it shows that realtime shadows are for EVERYTHING!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZfDHta0zEk - andoru, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4Well, it was built back in 1923.
Even today, I'm pretty sure that bridges made of metal beams still need to be painted to prevent rust. Other metals that are not affected by rust don't have the structural properties suitable for bridge building. - zephc, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3I suspect Blizz has high-quality models for everything, which can be algorithmically downgraded for target poly counts. Ditto with a lot of textures.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3ye it's just *****. i stopped playing for 2 moths, largely out of boredom. after 70 the game is *****.
you have to grind like a bitch to get tiny improvements. And the dorks have 100 times better items because they have no lives and got already the best items.
the game is ***** after 70.
I now have opened up an account for a month because I got utterly bored. It was still awful but I dropped skinning and got enchanting. that is slightly interesting, levelling a complex profession. - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -4/+7Sorry but i've been playing in the same 4 battlegrounds for years. It isn't time for new graphics. it is time for new GAME.
- Soytaco, on 08/28/2008, -4/+7Not to bash the interesting subject matter, but that article was horrible. It said nothing about the specifics of the graphics updates and used the line-through TWICE. sheesh.
Anyway, i can't wait to see the new Ice Shader through an ATI 4850 :D - Mullinator, on 08/29/2008, -0/+3Aren't all video games a waste of time?
- Shaflugi, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Well you know.. you can only do so much to the "Gameplay" in MMOs. Might as well work on the graphics a bit.
- Meekus, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Didn't EQ2 do this? I remember there were additional graphics you can add if you system could handle them. It's been so long that I don't remember the details.
But LMN8R is right - this should be easily achievable in the way he suggests. - Velnich, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3I feel a Shadows of Luclin coming on.
- Ravatar, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3His point was that when the focus changes away from content and onto graphics, problems begin to occur. The main focus nowadays is the graphics, because it sells games. The problem is that content is now an afterthought and we're left with boring, vapid gameplay experiences.
The content(storyline, lore, etc) are the foundation of any role-playing game. The graphics are simply built upon it. - andoru, on 08/28/2008, -5/+8In Australia, we have a saying that something is like "painting Sydney Harbour Bridge" - by the time the entire job is done, then it's time to start again. (The bridge actually does get painted like that - it takes several years to complete the job, at which point it is necessary to restart)
Anyway, the job of providing more detailed models for the graphical updates seems to be such a vast task, that by the time they are finished, even the "updated" graphics will seem old. So it's like painting the bridge. - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3It is people like Sirmasterboy that ruin gameing for the rest of us. You buy the games for what they look like and not what they play like...so game companies keep pushing out these flashy and ***** games cause they know stupid ***** like him will buy em.
- Mithivh, on 08/28/2008, -1/+3Not revolutionary? Have you seen the MMORPG market before WoW?
- pijiu, on 08/28/2008, -3/+5That's kind of the idea.
- Mistwaver, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2It's about time they do something with the graphics engine--it has been obsolete since beta. Additionally, I have to agree with datastorageguy, WoW is a waste of time, and it's a waste of money to continue to put money into this game. The first year WoW was a hit, but over the years Blizzard has only proven to the fanbase they can not make content. They are just recycling the same stuff over and over. People want to see new innovative ideas; not the same ideas rehashed for 4 years. WoW did what it was meant to do in its prime, now it's time to move on to bigger and better things.
I'm not by any means bashing WoW or hating on it. I loved WoW. I played it for 2 years before I moved on, but when I seen all Blizzard was doing was recycling the same things I had been doing for 2 years, I knew it was time to move on to something new.
RIP WoW, you fulfilled a lot of enjoyment in my life. - Meekus, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2I also think that they are considering other nations that are on a longer life cycle with their computers than the western world.
- th3heretic, on 08/28/2008, -2/+4Whats also sad is the premium client runs better than WoW (max settings max resolution). My sister and I have identical graphic's cards (8800gtx) and CPU's. She gets 60-80fps on WoW I get 200fps in Eve, crazy.
- Harabeck, on 08/28/2008, -2/+4No, if anything theyve only added more grinds.
- Clbck, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Dude, in WoW you run everywhere until you get your mount. That would be a workout.
- anyone4apint, on 08/28/2008, -1/+3Please dont do it Blizzard. I am too weak as it is. Shiney graphics will drag me back and then I have to lose my life all over again. Why Blizzard, WHY?!
- mushroomsrmagic, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Pretty sure it's free to play now.
