- yttrstein, on 11/09/2009, -1/+30I couldnt even ***** find gnossdrawkcab's comment for ten seconds amid all the ***** ads now infecting dig.
Don't you have enough money yet, Kevin Rose? Jesus christ. - RegalBegal, on 11/09/2009, -0/+13I played until I was around 200+. Then it hit me that playing this game was probably the most pointless thing I could be doing with my time.
- palehorse864, on 11/09/2009, -0/+11Reason for it's popularity? They make an offer... you can't refuse.
- VinceIP, on 11/09/2009, -2/+11Games like Mafia Wars and Farmville are the very definition of Facebook app exploitation. Make a stupid and simple Flash game with the addictive nature of level up and growth systems, and once it becomes popular, start putting real money prices on virtual game content. Before you know it, millions of idiots will pay you money for absolutely no effort.
The indie creators of addicting Facebook games are probably the luckiest bastards on Earth. They have literally made a fortune just for making a simple Flash game that would be completely worthless on any web site other than Facebook. These people don't have to work for the rest of their lives. It's incredible. - CrazyEddie041, on 11/09/2009, -1/+8YYYYEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa
- jsuther, on 11/09/2009, -3/+930 Diggs and this makes the front page. Sounds more like an ad than a story. Buried
- Gr00ver, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5Wow.. this is the first time I've seen an ad in the background.
They are taking over!
http://imgur.com/479Fo.jpg - gobbleplex, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5Mafia Wars is a flash game?
- Pyrotic, on 11/09/2009, -2/+5Buried just because of the background ad.
- AgentVladimir, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2What a crummy article. So yeah there's this game and you can play it. On Facebook. No analysis of the company's business? No look at what Facebook thinks or how it benefits?
I could have found out most of that information from just playing the game for five minutes. - altgeeky1, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Install Greasemonkey for Firefox, then install the GM script "Facebook Purity". You'll almost NEVER see a game-generated update again...
- jeffcairns, on 11/09/2009, -2/+4its so addictive its like crack
- inigomntoya, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2This is awful. That guy keeps looking at my can of Mtn. Dew. I would slap him except that I am afraid my hand will get bloody. And that I will break my awesome monitor...
- zip000, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2I'm over level 150 - not that that is anything to brag about - and I have not even ever considered putting any real money into Mafia Wars...I can't imagine why anyone ever would!
If there is content that is only available to those that put in money, well then I haven't heard of it. - deviantsteve, on 11/09/2009, -1/+3He must have figured out that half of us use adblock.
- billricardi, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2To illustrate the addictive nature of the game: I wrote a Google Knol ( http://knol.google.com/k/bill-ricardi/mafia-wars-m ... ) about how to get a fast start in Mafia Wars. It was just a quick little table for new players. I made it, and thought nothing of it, I was going to use it for personal reference.
In short order, it shot up to over 2000 views. I was flooded with mafia join requests. People started to send me offers for clubs where you can instantly get HUNDREDS of people to friend your account, just to join your Mafia. It was insane.
I tried to keep up for a couple of months, but it was hopeless. The 'game' was cutting into my productive writing time. I quietly filtered Mafia Wars out of my correspondences, and out of my life.
If people still play this and enjoy it, good for them. At the end of the day, it made me want to avoid Facebook like the plague. - altgeeky1, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2I can see you not paying anything in Mafia Wars - I don't.
That said, I can't see you NOT knowing that 'Godfather points' are for sale... buy points, exchange for virtual items. - inigomntoya, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1... for me to poop on!
- inigomntoya, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Its just business...
- inactive, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1MWAP FTW..
- palehorse864, on 11/09/2009, -1/+2Wasn't even going for that or thinking about it, but thank you. It needed it!
- travisMarc, on 11/09/2009, -1/+2I would never bother real people with one of these games. I instead just play iPhone World War whenever I'm on the toilet.
- inactive, on 11/09/2009, -1/+2Seems like this article got cut short. They spoke about how awesome the game is, then got in to the negative aspects and clammed up. Advertise much?
- yttrstein, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Yeah, I'm actually not interested in playing this cat and mouse game between myself and ultimately Mr. Rose's wallet.
As much as he claims to have some pretty major issues with Jason Calacanis' M.O. and philosophy, he's utilizing Jason's M.O. and philosophy almost better than Jason is. Except with herbal tea.
Anyhow, digg was amazing, and I'm glad it was started, but at this point there's so little resembling what it was at the beginning that it's about time to shove off. - zip000, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Sure Godfather points are for sale, but you don't have to buy them; you get them for free if you just play the game.
And the crap you buy with them isn't even all that good most of the time. I didn't say that there was no way to put real money in, I just said that there wasn't content that required real money.
If they start including that, then there will just be content that I don't get. - DiggTheBob, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Right click --> Adblock Image --> Page fixed!
- inigomntoya, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1"not that that is anything to brag about"
And yet here you are, on a popular, public, social news site 'not bragging' about it.
Good one... - technofiend, on 11/09/2009, -2/+2I didn't mind it when you could block the apps and be done, but for some reason Facebook has made it so some updates now show up in my friend feed anyway which is incredibly annoying! It's to the point where I'm ready to stop using FB or start unfriending people until their little addictions pass. It's easier to just stop using FB.
- howsyournan, on 11/09/2009, -1/+1http://instantrimshot.com/
- mparker21311, on 11/09/2009, -4/+4No one gives a flying turd about Mafia Wars.
- zip000, on 11/09/2009, -1/+1I agree. I've actually got 3 damned accounts playing Mafia Wars right now, and it is just a total waste of time...it isn't fun and it takes up a bit of time...but yet I do it anyway.
I've pretty much stopped with the 2 farmer accounts, but I've kept up my real account so far. I just want to finish the New York section...I could (at least so far) care less about Cuba and Moscow. I've just got level 3 of Boss left to do. - jerrod73, on 11/09/2009, -1/+1I think that's his argument, You don't just play for five minutes.
- altgeeky1, on 11/09/2009, -1/+1I see just one ad, in the image background. Adblock doesn't block it, yet.
Not trying to start a flamewar or anything, but why would you choose not to run Adblock? That's like choosing to go out in the snow without a jacket.
What IS annoying is the sponsored digs, but I can live with that (I'm not seeing it anymore though... maybe it has been replaced by the background ads?)
I know some people stick with Internet Explorer, but forget the browsers for a moment... Adblock and Greasemonkey are awesome at returning control of your web browser BACK to you. Greasemonkey in particular is good at mashups and streamlining websites like Facebook (which needs it). - daviz0, on 11/09/2009, -2/+1I prefer zinga poker on there, it taught me how to play the game and the next weekend end I played it for real and won £35, and that was against people who had been playing for years.
- inactive, on 11/09/2009, -4/+1***** you, two of my friends died in the Mafia wars!
- pegothejerk, on 11/09/2009, -12/+6lvl 150+. add me.
- gnossdrawkcab, on 11/09/2009, -15/+4farmville is good too
