The Dominion. Soldiers were called the Jem Hadar.
They said at the panel that they'd be adding a lot of races once the game was launched and stable.
/nerditude - Lewie, on 08/12/2008, -2/+19TNG FTW
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -2/+17I hope you can gain enough transporter points to somehow beam people off their ships and then beat them senseless with inanimate carbon rods.
'in Rod we Trust!' - inactive, on 08/12/2008, -6/+21Bring back Enterprise...
- tubaros, on 08/12/2008, -1/+14"To boldy go where no man has gone before"
Yeah, apart from the hundreds of other people on your server... - Nebberz, on 08/12/2008, -2/+14Beam me up Scotty!
- zadadka, on 08/12/2008, -0/+9That's a jest, right?
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -1/+9why stop at Klingon and Star Fleet though? Why not Ferengi, Romulan, Cardassians, those invady guys from DS9?
- Avaseal, on 08/12/2008, -0/+8How the ***** should we know?
- WinnemuccaMac, on 08/12/2008, -0/+8I saw the panel they did when introducing this game. Very cool, but when one of the audience members asked the executive producer for an ETA, he said "Definitely less than three years from now."
Sigh. - thetron, on 08/12/2008, -0/+8I guess this is star trek response to the stargate universe mmo
Game makers or producers need to understand that you can create an mmo. Providing your design doesnt suck and not recycling orignal concept ideas of wow
As one Game Developer said for Warhammer
"Forget WoW ever existed and go forward to create an orignal game. Not based on the old ideas of WoW" - Borgcube, on 08/12/2008, -3/+11Voyager? Really?
- TheInformer, on 08/12/2008, -1/+6Ok Ok wise guy. Now beam up my clothes.
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -0/+5Well, since the human or Klingon characters start as Captains, I imagine you would start as the Borg Collective mind of the ship as that is the control system.
As I think about it, that would be really cool. - ObieOnce, on 08/12/2008, -0/+5A MMO dosn't have to have a WoW level of subscriptions to succeed. Hell I think even 10% of WoW levels would be considered a successful MMO...
- Nebberz, on 08/12/2008, -1/+5if only (;
- s0ldad0, on 08/12/2008, -1/+5You have reached your maximum XP points in "7 of 9"-ness.
All players now wanna use your replicator.
BTW - you have already make "Earl grey, hot" - daRoach, on 08/12/2008, -2/+6How many times have I seen this comment?
- positron, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3Gotta save something for the expansions.
- Peck3277, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3I thought of the simpsons
- WoollyMittens, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3Except they only just bought the license from another doomed developer and decided to toss everything and start over. Don't hold your breath waiting for this one.
- AngryAngryBrian, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3Players will also be able to battle against other vessels in laser-blasting, missile-firing deep space scuffles reminiscent of "The Wrath of Khan"
lasers? You mean phasers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weapons_of_Star_Trek# ... - MrFurious2k, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3I think the trick is to learn what WoW does well and be willing to learn from it. Cloning WoW would be a mistake but it'd also be a mistake not to understand why its the number one MMO.
- bezz, on 08/12/2008, -1/+4Will you be able to craft jackets from tribbles?
- hankidic, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3If this is supposed to be set a few generations after the last movie. How are there so many next gen era ships flying about?
- ilbbaicl, on 08/12/2008, -2/+4Farming Borg for phat lewt
- MrFurious2k, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2I think you have a point about how the Star Trek name has been diluted by money grabs. For it really being a cash cow for Paramount/CBS, they sure knew how to destroy it. It's almost akin to throttling the Golden Goose for one last golden egg when it was sick rather than nursing it back to health.
That all said, the Star Trek universe provides LOTS and LOTS of opportunity for an MMO. In fact, its universe is vastly larger than Firefly simply because of warp travel. Firefly dealt with a planetary system, whereas Star Trek/ Star Wars had a much larger sandbox. As much as I love Firefly, it doesn't offer the same options for diplomacy, exploration, and alien encounters. Firefly has a ton of awesome packed into 14 episodes, but the setting it offers doesn't have near the possibilities that ST does. - WallnutBoy, on 08/12/2008, -1/+3I agree. I've seen that comment before on an earlier article about this..
- richbleak, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2Yeah, this was a real "human ***** floating in my coffee" moment for me too. It was funny because the audience laughed thinking it was a joke; then the guy got defensive saying that this timeline was unheard of in the industry.
- ipxodi, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2FTFA
"You'll also beam down to planets and have adventures inside your ship."
What? You'll beam down to the planet INSIDE your ship? Or is that just piss poor grammar by an individual who presumably has a degree in Journalism? - meed, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1If ready to beam up means another from scratch production of the game has started...
We've been waiting for Startrek online since it was announced the same time Starwars Galaxies was. This article is mis-leading with it's title, none of the previous code was handed over! Meaning atleast two years of developement are ahead. - Chross, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Odd, this story is word for word the same as the one posted earlier that was on cnn (http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/ptech/08/08/star.trek ... They must use the same writers.
- Fleagleman, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1No Spock, Kirk, or even Piccard.
And I'm supposed to be excited about this? I smell another Matrix Online bomb. - BluesFan, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2Trailer
http://files.startrekonline.com/movies/trailer/STO ...
http://www.startrekonline.com/videos - Idietired, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2Yeah, but you mean the ship or the show?
I was always an Enterprise-E fan myself ...
Somethin' about havin' a Captain's Yacht under the saucer section gives the E a real "No, mine's bigger" feel to it ... kinda makes it hard to hate.
In Cap. Archer's defense, though, no processor ever beats a real on-board cook. - inactive, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1or someone knows how pvp sucks.
- Idietired, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Is it weird that when I saw "in Rod we Trust!" my brain immediately went something like:
"You're listening to Dark Chocolate ..."
"And the Rod!"
Family Guy? Anyone? - EbowUK, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Re Warhammer - did you miss the E3 Warhammer presentation? While the dev stands and talks loudly about how great the game will be, what appears to be WoW with new models plays in the background.
- MacParrot, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Even the M5 multitronic computer system would balk at Crysis.
"This unit has deleted Crysis from memory. This unit must survive" - Georgy, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1your take on the trek franchise might be right or wrong but then you go on to say how a firefly mmo will do better than a trek mmo, yea right....
- WallnutBoy, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1At the convention, someone asked if it would run on Linux.
"I have no idea. Same response for Macs."
That was his response.. To be honest he really sucked at that convention. - Jaablaze, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1it will blend though
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1The Captain's Yacht was also on the bottom of the Enterprise D.
- PhoenixCE, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1After what Jack Emmert did to City of Heroes. I won't be touching this game.
- mttyd, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Most MMOs have less than stellar graphics... You can't compare WoW to Crysis...
- mttyd, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1LOL we defeated the borg by having them assimilate Crysis...
- ChildeRoland420, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1That's because they are the SAME EXACT shuttles, they haven't built any since the 80s. Surely the Federation will keep improving designs and building new ships.
- ChildeRoland420, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1I was under the impression that they were reusing another engine, so they could just build the content and have it more or less running.
- britoca, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1______ me ______ Scotty!
