- iXneonXi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Good game but this will be buried.
- psg188, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2umm.. guild wars? Enemy Territory is free, there are many things you can do... I'd rather eat broken glass then play runescape...
- psg188, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm speachless... first of all runescape is the worst MMO I have ever played...
secondly... 25% of the worlds population is around 1.6 billion people... I have no words to describe how innaccurate this is, its a flat out lie, .... I can't even think of anything strong enough to describe my total disgust with the absolute and total lack of any legitimacy to that statement... Hootyea is right about WoW, wrong on the world pop estimate, but thats unimportant and not my concern, this should be buried immediatly and saxophone bitch should be banned from digg for making the most blatant lie I have ever seen here... dear god... - Hootyea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Over 25%?
The number one MMO being played is WoW, which is around 6 million.
25% of the population is around 1.25 billion. No chance.
Burried for being innacurate. - computermatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1runescape is free (unless you want to be a member), WOW costs $ 15 a month, if you ever wanted to play a huge RPG online, Runescape is better, because it's FREE! If it's free, then it's for me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Runescape, the popular internet MMORPG game has over 25% of the world's population playing it!
thats *****. runescape sucks if you're over six and only a moron would pay to play it. and the description isnt the place for your own asinine opinions - jeremyngu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is a noob game its only a noob version of warcraft
world of war craft is better
and battle net too - psg188, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you've ever played a real game in your life you'd know what I mean, runescape is boring as hell and in no way shape or form a "good" game...
and the fact you actually spout the ***** about your "kids getting better grades because of runescape" then your just a moron... Chess might give your kids better grades, it might even raise your IQ... runescape? don't bet your ***** worthless life on it.
and btw there is a reason your comments are buried - psg188, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you wont hear that cause runescape is a piece of crap..
and I never sit around talking about fecal matter... do you? - jeremyngu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i can tell you how to make money ezy just mine coal.
i dont play any more a play warcraft - BG06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I first found it I thought Runescape was excellent. It's free which I thought was pretty cool 'cos most free on-line games are pretty basic. I thought it was quite inventive - (again bearing in mind that it's free) and I played it non-stop for a good few days. But .... after spending quite a long time not getting very far I have to agree with 'saxaphonefreak' - it takes too long to make any significant progress and I got fed up of hunting around, trying to complete basic tasks.
Plus as a non-member and obvious noobie I spent most of my time as battle practice, being hacked to death by the "great wizard of death" or some such character! - audan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok, this is seriously sad, 25% of the world? *points and laughs*
i got a lvl 100 account on rs, and i like it personally (but playing guild wars atm =P) but ide b suprised if rs even hav 500k players, it prob has around 300-400k, considering most people ever logged on at once was around 200k at the most - MrSpacely, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The guy above said it better than I have ever heard. RuneScape is better on so many levels, but it sort of depends on the player type too. What you said about guys sitting around in restaurants talking about world of warcraft like it was life made me laugh for like 5 minutes straight. I come across a lot of those people but have never experienced a similar incident with RuneScape players. I doubt I ever will.
-Doug - saxophonefreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i don't play any more either, but i just made this "story" to see how many people actually do like this game. and by the way, my mining level was like... 65 when i stopped playing, and yes, i did mine coal to make $$. i just meant that prices for everything sky-rocketed a while back.
- GreenBeret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Whoa! That was harsh. I have to agree with you though. People like psg would be better offing themselves for the good of us all. Runescape is an awesome game. I let my son play it and his grades in school have improved and he doesn't play it like an addict like he and his friends did when they used to play Everquest. I don't play it, but I see enough of he and his friends playing to know that it is a good game and far better for kids and adults alike than wow or some other rpgs.
- MrSpacely, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thank you psg for demonstrating your ignorance twice in a single topic. I truly hope you become a casualty of Darwinism very soon and die off along with the rest of the hopeless, weak, pathetic, and ignorant people who currently pollute the gene pool. Take care now, bye bye then.
-Doug - BigDonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You are all lame as hell. Everything that has been posted so far has been wrong so let me clarify. First off, the originator is an idiot for putting 25% of the worlds population. There are a little over 5 million active players on RuneScape as of this comment including both RuneScape free and members players. Next, World of Warcraft and RuneScape are not two games that should be compared. World of Warcraft and Everquest could be, but RuneScape is in a different league. World of Warcraft leads the world in popularity for most played MMORPG, 'nuff said. Look at the good points and the bad here. Good points to note are that the games graphics are very impressive considering it has been a long-time stipulation that RPG's have good gameplay but poor graphics. Also, the content for the game is overwhelming. Bad points to note are that you have restrictions. You have to pick a class, you have no way of moving to another class or being multiple classes well into the game and this is a point that truly sucks. It falls back on the reason many gamers refuse to play RPG's and that is for the lack of reality. In the real world, you could easily be well trained in archery and still have the same level or better skills in boxing or karate (melee combat). Why then is there a restriction on what you have to be? What if people want to change? Another point to note is that everyone who wishes to play MUST pay to do so. This is a very unappealing point for the majority of gamers as statistics have shown that over 75% of gamers worldwide fall into the 17-28 year old age bracket. Either the gamer is strapped for cash and wants to game without shelling out more every month, or they have the cash, but would rather not pay as they have already purchased the game and honestly shouldn't have to pay an extra fee for playing.
Now, let us look at RuneScape. First of all, yes it is a MMORPG just like WoW and Everquest, but here is the big difference. Players wishing to play this game need not shell out $50 to pay for the game software and then shell out nearly $20 more per month just to play that which they just purchased. If someone was just interested in checking RuneScape out, or they are totally committed to delving into a new MMORPG adventure, they have that ability without any cost whatsoever just by going to the website and creating an account. They can explore nearly the entire RuneScape lands and train all but 7 of the 22 available skills without paying anything at all. Players can freely choose what they want to train and how they want to train without restrictions. If they want to be solely an archer and keep all other combat stats low, they can do that. If they want to train their characters into a warrior that has a high level in magic as well, they can. Even if they wanted to be a monk and keep all stats low while focusing on increasing their prayer level they can! This important concept is one of the many reasons RuneScape appeals to the masses. Let us bounce back to the reality aspect. In games like WoW and Everquest, there is way too much fantasy. This is something that many gamers such as myself frown upon. For players who like the RPG concept, but shy from it and focus instead on shooters and mayhem (Grand Theft Auto and SOCOM for instance), too much fantasy is unappealing. RuneScape has more reality aspects than fantasy overall. Nearly every skill in the game is a skill one could actually learn and practice in real life. In real life people actually do mine, smith, chop wood, craft materials, construct houses, identify and use herbs, etc. In RuneScape these are regular skills you can learn about and practice increasing your level or proficiency along the way. The fantasy aspects of RuneScape? Some demons, dragons, elemental giants, etc. and the use of magic and crafting of mystic runes..that's about it.
Not only taking all of the above information into consideration, but also including the fact that people who wish to pay to play and unlock more content and abilities only have to pay a modest $5 monthly to do so, is another important aspect of this game. You could easily max out 15 of the skills in RuneScape and complete numerous mini-games and quests before you even needed to unlock anything else, but even at that point you only need to pay $5 to do so! I can't get a value meal at the local fast food joint for that cheap! What do players who pay this fee get in return? Full access to the game including the whole RuneScape world, a ton of new quests, weekly updates to include new skills, abilities, monsters, graphic tweaks, etc. Not only that but members can also utilise the RuneScape forums to seek help or converse with their in-game chummies. All around the benefits of RuneScape are staggering compared to WoW. WoW is more popular because of the teamwork aspect and the graphic superiority, but that is about it. People pay a lot more (first for software, then about 2 times more per month to play), and turn out to be a lot more detached from reality if they play WoW due to the high fantasy element. These are the gamers you run into while at CiCi's pizza and all they are talking about is WoW and what monsters they just killed, what they levelled, and who was an idiot in the group that caused them to fail. The RuneScape players are the ones that usually lead more stable lives due to more realism inherent in RuneScape. These players can go onto RuneScape and play for a few hours and then logoff returning to their lives and remembering that it is only a game (except for that low percentage of RPGers that cross-train from games like WoW into RuneScape and still retain their unhealthy lust for virtual gaming despite their environment or whether or not they are logged on).
The creators of RuneScape not only created a magnificent world for gamers of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy, but they also did it smartly. The game actually helps people who play it to learn basic and intermediate concepts that they can apply in the real world. Did you know that the Omaha Public Library even bought new computers and started lock-ins for children to play RuneScape because it encouraged thinking, comprehension and those who played were more likely to check out a book as well? This game is currently in the top 3 worldwide for popular MMORPGs and is #1 as far as Java-based online games and for good reason. All of you who posted prior to this need to check your facts and close your mouths unless you know what you're talking about, because by posting your nonsense all you have done is showed your ignorance. Try playing the game. Afraid you might learn something?
Cheers,
Jonny
P.S. - Those who posted that it is too hard to earn money in RuneScape need to get themselves checked into rehab from the drugs they are taking. It is easier to make money in RuneScape than it is in WoW, Everquest, Ragnarok Online, Grand Theft Auto, Neopets, Kingdom Hearts, etc. just to name a few other games. Hell, I can make a character today and in 20 minutes have close to 50k coins.
