You have got to be kidding me. You realize that virtualnes.com is ripping off the people at Nintendo that actually DID spend "countless hours developing some cool *****". - carcass350, on 10/12/2007, -20/+81*****!!
This is just stolen from virtualnes.com. I don't have a java decompiler here at work but the class files inside the vnes.jar files are all compiled with the same date & time.

This kind of ***** pisses me off. Some guy spends countless hours developing some cool ***** and then some punk steals it. - csonjeow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+64This can't be legal, can it? Especially when Wii Console is trying to get me to buy these for $5 each.
- Nardle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41http://www.virtualnes.com is better.
And retroman, I would advise you not to sneak ads on this site like you did with your last front page. That will give Nintendo more motivation to shut you down. - xafan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26As others has mentioned, this is a direct rip off of http://www.virtualnes.com/
Buried. - paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Getting dugg down a lot today by any chance? You might try removing your sig.

Ok, maybe I see your point ;-)
I guess the old adage "there is no honor among thieves" holds true. Still pisses me off though - mzwaterski, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16dugg down for hypocrisy!
- po43292, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I think you guys killed vnes' server. :(

- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Castle-Vania is way better than Con-Tra and Ma-Rio. Not on par with Zel-Da, though.
- majortom1981, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah lets get this site noticed by posting it on digg. Since it will get really noticed nintendo will shut it down. Real smart.
- MeltingIce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7http://virtualnes.com has been around for a really long time and it does exactly the same thing.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Motrax is right, xspire is just spouting a myth (see Snopes).
ROMs are not time-limited to 24 hours. They are legitimate backup copies IF AND ONLY IF they are intended for backup use. Technically, the ROM files themselves may not be used; the data is supposed to be restored to the proper medium (ie, Nintendo cartridge) before use. Hence the term "backup."
The 24 hour thing is just an urban myth intended to legitimize ROMs. It doesn't matter how long you have the ROM, it matters *how you use it.*
Many of the IP owners haven't enforced their rights and challenged emulators, ROM sites simply because it wasn't worth the money. (Notable exceptions: EA, Square Enix, Sega) Now that old games are becoming popular again on the Wii and Xbox Live, you can expect that to change in the next year or two, as companies revive their interest in old IP.
[ And BTW, abandonware is not a recognized legal concept. While there is a statute of limitations for specific copyright violations (meaning that they couldn't sue Person A for copying a game in say, 1990), the IP owner doesn't relinquish their rights to the IP unless they voluntarily do so. (trademarks are the exception; trademarks are lost if not actively protected). So they could always sue Person C for copying a game in 2007. ] - antishow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"No one stands to profit off of them anymore."

Good thing I don't work at McDonalds. - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@cronot: You misunderstand US copyright law. Backup copies are only permitted for *private* or *personal* use. (Academic fair use is a separate issue, focusing on excerpts.) They may not be distributed to others, which is exactly what he's doing here. It doesn't matter if the site owner actually owns the games. In fact, it's presumed that he does, otherwise he's liable for other things as well.
So...if you were to make a private emulator site, where you could play your own backup roms, and limit access to yourself, THAT would be okay.
This isn't. Nintendo may not send a takedown notice to this guy's ISP, but one of the game publishers certainly will (probably EA, which owns the rights to many of the game lines featured on the site). - quami16, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Megaman is now taking up the rest of my entire day.

Originally, the site didn't give credit to Sanders. I'm assuming the webmaster took notice of the negative comments here. - kaervas59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What about lunch time?
- Motrax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Whomever was asking about the legality of this - It isn't. Emulators are legal. And someone was explaining about having a backup copy...That's true. If you have a hard copy of a game and make your own backup, that is legal. It's not legal, however, to share that file. Or include it with other emulators. And, it's even not legal to download someone else's backup copy. Only if you make your own backup of your own game. So although I'm a HUGE supporter and lover of emulation, it's not exactly legal.

- wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3good point. Based on the editorial content, Im wondering how many Ninendo-of-America employees are in these forums.
no shortage it seems. - keyboardduder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The enthusiasm is appreciated by the website owner and the poster, but the controls are so damn annoying id rather play the ROMs with my XBOX 360 controller.

- sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, except that this doesn't use flash...it uses java. Also, I have a 64-bit system as well, and Flash 9 works just fine on it.

Most companies (you know, actual organizations) have a thing called a 'duty-free lunch' where you don't have to do any work during that time. - mattym, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@cronot:
If I put a "backup" of all my music cd's online, but don't allow anyone to download the cd's, but provide a, lets say, flash based
player to listen to all of my backup cd's, is that not copyright infringement?
The music player on my website is just like the emulator...going by your logic, the person listening doesn't have access to the music, only to the output of
the music player....
There really is no question here on copyright infringement. VNes, no matter how cool or awesome, is seriously infringing upon
many copyrights. Emulation, in a personal situation, may fall in a grey area. This does not.
If you still don't understand: the java emulator downloads a copy of the rom from VNes's server, and loads it into memory/caches
it to the user's HDD. VNes is distributing copyrighted material, regardless of whether the end user every actually "sees" the file
on his or her computer. - C0LIN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All I have to say for TMNT 2 on the title screen:

Emulators are legal.
Backup ROMS are legal.
Sharing *your* physical copy of the game is legal.
Distributing copies of the game are not.
Just recognize that there is a cost-benefit analysis here: companies won't just sue Joe Schmoe for sharing a few ROMS; the game industry was built on shareware. The companies only pursue serious offenders, like some of the bigger ROM sites a few years back (which EA and Square Enix successfully shut down as they cropped up). - kiraevo, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I'd imagine it would be a lot like GameTap, except done completely in the browser with NES games and completely free http://melodyswahd.com
