- rpapi100, on 02/27/2008, -2/+11I've been going on this site for a couple of months now and unless you go at like 3AM eastern time, good luck trying to play something. This page suffers from PDES (permanent digg effect syndrome).
- noahhoward, on 02/27/2008, -1/+4Really? I've been playing Silent Service at various times every day for a week now.
- millersir, on 02/27/2008, -4/+2Thanks a ***** lot OP.... I've been playing SMB3 on this site for over a year (the first time this was posted to digg) You've ruined my free time, and since i work in IT thats all i have is free time. So you've basically ruined my life... *****
- Nitesmoke, on 02/27/2008, -0/+4OK, in case this site goes down, or if you want to choose from almost every NES game, go here http://www.virtualnes.com/list/a.html
- artofwar420, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1This is an international treasure.Though, it still feels better to play them with a controller, this is a very VERY good emulator. I remember some great games, THEY HOLD UP! They're still fun as hell. I have to go look for them in the Virtual Console now. I'm just so happy inside.
- schmeeky, on 02/27/2008, -1/+10Seems to be holding up alright at the moment...

- spammishking, on 02/27/2008, -3/+121Even after all these years I still suck at battletoads :(
- chewbacca77, on 02/27/2008, -0/+40I think EVERYONE still does. That game was very hard.
- DarkVandal1019, on 02/27/2008, -0/+17I really think nobody was ever good at battletoads
- mustbepatient, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2I remember now, there was one level that I just couldn't get past and ended up finding a warp to bypass it. I don't know if I ever would have been able to beat it without warping.
- Ph34rb0t, on 02/27/2008, -0/+18I beat it once. That game was evil hard. I still hear the pause music playing in my head at times when I am frustrated over a problem.
- andols, on 02/27/2008, -3/+4Sorry I have to call BS. 4 of us tried using an emulator and save states, and we could not get past the race against the buzz saw thing.
Unless you are Xenu I call shenanigans.- kburk, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2I can honestly say i beat it on the emulator with save states (took a dedicated save/load person while I played), but I agree with your BS call on this.
- mustbepatient, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2You're talking about the SNES Battelmaniacs game, not the NES original. The key to the buzz saw level is turning the corners very precisely. It can definitely be done with a lot of memorization, but yes, it is crazy hard.
- mustbepatient, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Holy @#&! I just went on a website to reminisce and there is a code to get 5 lives with each continue instead of 3! Damn I wish I had known that way back when. I just relied on all the extra lives I got from the 2nd level to carry me through...
And yes, that game was the hardest game I've ever got through. Looking back, I have no idea why I spent so much time working on it. There's no way I would work that hard to beat a game these days...
- andols, on 02/27/2008, -3/+4Sorry I have to call BS. 4 of us tried using an emulator and save states, and we could not get past the race against the buzz saw thing.
- zengonzo, on 02/27/2008, -0/+18It's pretty funny .. But back when I was a kid I took it for granted that a particular game wasn't inhumanly difficult or featured broken mechanics .. I just assumed that I sucked at a particular game. The games themselves were unimpeachable.
- SocialPoison, on 02/27/2008, -0/+7I broke my first Nintendo controller playing Battletoads... I spiked it after I finally passed that damn hoverbike level.
- Commodore84, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3http://www.cracked.com/article_15696_10-most-irrit ...
Cracked has it as the #1 most irritatingly-impossible old school video game. I completely agree. - Commodore84, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idZ9C0Qtj2A - Speaking of the hoverbike level. Here's a guy who finally mastered that. I never did beat it.
- linuxrocks2007, on 02/27/2008, -5/+273The website just links to games hosted at http://www.virtualnes.com
- arcooke, on 02/27/2008, -4/+47Just go straight to the source like he said and play the games YOU think are the best, not some random blogger. Buried for being the blog spam it is.
- joaob, on 02/27/2008, -1/+23Not to mention they completely excluded Mike Tyson's Punchout which is definitely in the top 50.
- mrgreen4242, on 02/27/2008, -0/+8And not putting Mario 3 and Zelda as numbers 1 and 2... I mean, TMNT2 over Zelda? Tetris would be a close call, but Zelda spawned a huge franchise and really set an entire genre (adventure RPGs) into motion and Mario 3 took platformers to a new level - the overworld map with variable paths and optional levels, the suit system, storable items... these things were integrated into almost every platform game after it and, I don't think, existed in any game before it.
I just can't think of any Nintendo game, perhaps ANY game ever, that was more influential than these two... toss the first open ended "sandbox" game and the first FPS (Doom, I suppose) into that list and it pretty much gives you the basis of every game on the market today.
Punch Out is the bomb, though.

- apochcrypha, on 02/27/2008, -22/+1You don't understand. Nintendo will issue a cease and desist letter to this website for copyright violation of having NES games playable on the web.
Having blogspam confuses Nintendo from knowing where the source is, and they take down the middleman, meanwhile the source of the NES games is still available.
Remember on Stage6.com, there were many blogspam websites which had full hollywood movies linked to Stage6.com, and when the MPAA sued, it only affected these blogspam websites,- btchsntsht, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1who in the ***** is going to buy a ***** nes game?
- rune420, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Heard of virtual console?

- welliamwallace, on 02/27/2008, -0/+5Why is this not illegal? just curious.
- Cerebral, on 02/27/2008, -0/+6I believe for them to host them it is, but for us to play them it's not since we do not physically have the ROM?
- cerealjynx, on 02/27/2008, -2/+4I think most of these titles might be in copywright limbo. Even though they hold the patent for Mario, nintendo doesn't really care about NES-era ROMs. But I'm just guessing, I don't know ***** :)
- Cerebral, on 02/27/2008, -0/+4Well some of them they might more because of the VC on the Wii. But I agree that quite a few of them are in copyright limbo.

- CarStan, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1how come they have every game except for mario and zelda, just the ones i wonted to play
- B3000, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1virtualnes.com has both - although I don't know how to save on zelda... anyone know?

- apochcrypha, on 02/27/2008, -6/+0Why am I being dugg down for my comments above? I made a legitimate point that having blogspam is a good thing, and protects the NES roms online. Digging down should be reserved for spam, offensive remarks, etc.
I hate Digg because of comment censorship. I do not feel welcomed on this website- hawk0168, on 02/27/2008, -0/+6GTFO noob.

Jamie Sanders, ha his donation page:
Donate to Jamie Sanders - the 15 year old who wrote the vNES emulator!
The emulator used on nintendo8.com is called vNES and was written by Jamie Sanders. Jamie is a truly amazing, not only did he write the best and fastest Java based NES-emulator available - the guy is is only 15 years old!
Nintendo8.com would simply NOT be possible without Jamie's efforts. This kid is amazing!
If you enjoy Ninteodo8.com and the vNES emulator, please do consider donating a few bucks to Jamie by clicking on the Paypal link below. A 15 year old's budget is obviously not that huge, so even smaller donations probably will make a difference.
Update Mon Apr 16, 2007: vNES will be released under the GPL by the end of the month. Yet another reason to donate! Yay for Jamie - the 15 year old NES-wizard!- vNES, on 02/27/2008, -0/+7Please, you insult me, I'm not responsible for Nintendo8.

- SamuelHenderson, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1RCR Ex is the whole reason I bought a GBA. It's an ok game but I still prefer the original.

- barandon0D9, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1I hear you. I went into this thinking, ok, this is kinda lame, I can play all these on my computer with a retro pad in full screen. Then I ended up playing Darkwing Duck for 45 minutes. Its still cool that you jump on here from mostly any computer with a decent internet connection.

- DarkVandal1019, on 02/27/2008, -4/+8Wow Top gun is on there, did anyone ever land that damn plane on the carrier? or hook up to get fuel? or beat any of the 4 levels? That game was a piece of ***** in my book.
- Ph34rb0t, on 02/27/2008, -1/+4I had a love/hate relationship with that game. And no, I never accomplished any of the feats you mentioned.
- jd72277, on 02/27/2008, -0/+4I could refuel fine. I would be so over the game, then that theme music would get me into it again.
- the1danimal, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2hahaha i know exactly what you're talking about. I think I only ever played mission 1. Couldnt land that damn thing for crap. Up, up, up, slow down!
- maaddmax, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2I landed it once omg! I took a polaroid picture and sent it into Nintendo Power to show off!
- dweeb73, on 02/27/2008, -3/+4What are you guys talking about? I was an ace pilot back in my day! Land on the carrier is easy, and the refuel is also easy. The secret for the harder missions was to always fly nose up so the ground missiles wouldn't launch. Its funny this link showed up because a few weeks ago I dusted off the ole trusty Nintendo and hooked it up to my 56 inch HDTV. Ahh 8 bit gamey goodness in 1080P.
- LanceUppercut, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Yeah I landed it. My dad had to buy a book of cheats that told you the correct vectors and whatnot to come in on. Could I do it without the book? Hell no, I don't know anyone other than the author that has the patience to trial and error. He probably had insider information.
- Shadic, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1The trick with the landing is that the controls for Up/Down are actually inverted. The bastards actually, you know, tried to emulate a plane.
- jagenjg, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1i got pretty good at it... just keep the cross bar on the horrizon.... i pretty much land every time
- jagenjg, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1i got pretty good at it... just keep the cross bar on the horrizon.... i pretty much land every time
- jagenjg, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1I got it on my first try... just keep the cross hairs above the carrier.. and follow the instructions. speed up is nose down, slow is nose up. No big movements just like a plane be smooth.
- ogwtech, on 02/27/2008, -7/+1those games really rocks

- CEpeep, on 02/27/2008, -0/+14Why is Mario is Missing number 14?
- NeoCortex, on 02/27/2008, -0/+4I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this list is in no particular order, and the numbering is utterly meaningless.
- tnatharik, on 02/27/2008, -10/+48 Bit. OMG. My com doesnt support that. I need a NEW COM NOW.
- Bilabrin, on 02/27/2008, -0/+4Yeah I'm running a Tandy TSR-80 from Radio shack too. Good stuff!
- puscifer919, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2What, no Cabal?
- harvbirdman, on 02/27/2008, -4/+1Isn't this a re-post?
- ventralnet, on 02/27/2008, -0/+23Not sure why legend_of_zelda_2 didn't get more props.. Not many liked the game.. i thought it was awesome
- apochcrypha, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3Horizontal scroller? Blahh. At least when Super NES came out, they made Zelda 3 like the original, and added more
- Scira, on 02/27/2008, -3/+1It took me so long to beat that game. Its like castlevania but lamer
- MaynardJK, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2I thought it was great in its own way. I also liked Castlevania 2 the most out of that series so I guess I'm just weird.
- doverboy, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1I AM ERROR!
- solid12345, on 02/27/2008, -0/+6Zelda and Castlevania 2 rocked, one of the few games to be ballsy and try and make a sequel that actually changed things. But since it failed instead we got clone sequels in game franchises like Mega Man where every game was practically the same.
- apochcrypha, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3Horizontal scroller? Blahh. At least when Super NES came out, they made Zelda 3 like the original, and added more
- smackafiyah, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2This site is gonna get me fired.. *opens anyway while servers crash*

- Malarie, on 02/27/2008, -2/+1word
- apochcrypha, on 02/27/2008, -1/+0Startropics is my favourite game on the NES. I wish they remade it on the Wii, that would be awesome (e.g. dip the manual in water again to get a code to continue in the game)
- MethodOne, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1They did! It has been been available on Virtual Console since January.
- Bilabrin, on 02/27/2008, -2/+1Yeah, and I didn't see Faxanadu either.
- bakedblog, on 02/27/2008, -3/+0loved these games when I was a kid. Awesome that I can play them on the comp. I
- Bilabrin, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3Emulation has been around for awhile. I was playing these games on my Sega Dreamcast 5 years ago.
- AlphaInsidious, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3"I..." what? Gah! Now I'll never know!
Curse you bakedblog!
- EmailAddress, on 02/27/2008, -2/+1where Kid Niki??!@!!
- mrisaka, on 02/27/2008, -7/+3Why is everyone so pumped? For me, it's slow as balls, and thus unplayable. :(
- diggymow, on 02/27/2008, -0/+4Everything ran at full speed for me..
- UnWeave, on 02/27/2008, -4/+2Same for me too. Although my PC isn't that good, and it IS java...
- Ophelia870, on 02/27/2008, -3/+1It's really slow for me as well, and the music is playing one note at a time, with a 2 second delay between each note. It's not my computer though, maybe the site is slowing down because of Digg traffic.
- bdit1200, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1Java should be running on the client, regardless of server traffic. My computer appears to suck the balls, too
- Hoogs, on 02/27/2008, -2/+2Agreed, it kept causing Firefox to crash for me.
- winquerque, on 02/27/2008, -11/+0How can I play SMario on PlayStation2. My sun will love it!
- brandon81211, on 02/27/2008, -0/+11You have you're own sun? What star system is it in? How does a sun play video games? LOL ;)

- elithrar, on 02/27/2008, -2/+11I'm pretty sure I could listen to the original Zelda theme all day and not get sick of it.
- TheKingInYellow, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2i was actually humming the zelda theme song in the shower this morning.
- TheKingInYellow, on 02/27/2008, -0/+5not that anyone really needs to know that.
- TheKingInYellow, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2i was actually humming the zelda theme song in the shower this morning.
- NinjaPirateDude, on 02/27/2008, -1/+7ah friends, how i will miss you.
- TheShom, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3Sorry guys, can't talk right now. Tryin' to dodge those damn flyin turtles!
- stepfresh, on 02/27/2008, -0/+4Tecmo Bowl is awesome.
- mcfly99, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Agreed. I'm also glad to see Blades of Steel on there.
- smackafiyah, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1I got the VC version on my Wii and forgot how fun this game is.
- Malarie, on 02/27/2008, -2/+4Mario Bros. The game that started it all. All kneel to our Geek Overlord: Shigeru Myamoto!
- bobartig, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2You mean Donkey Kong, right? Because that was Shigeru's first game to star Mario. Mario Bros. didn't come out until 2 years later.
- SketchaMPM, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1Someone help me. I hate the controls. 'Z' should be "A" and 'X' should be "B". It will make it easier to hold 'run' with Mario and jump, or charge in Mega Man while moving.
Is there any way to change the controls? Is there another emu with better controls?- MWeather, on 02/27/2008, -0/+6Get an Optimus Maximus keyboard and change X to Z.
- conscioussomber, on 02/27/2008, -1/+0http://zophar.net
NES emulators have been around for a long time.- MWeather, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1That doesn't help change the controls on this particular one. In any case, even easier than an emulator is an actual NES. No need to remap anything then.
- conscioussomber, on 02/27/2008, -1/+0http://zophar.net
- Scira, on 02/27/2008, -0/+11get a butter knife and pry out your X and Z keys, and switch them around.
- Cerebral, on 02/27/2008, -0/+6...and remember to press Alt + F4 to set the new configuration.
- NathaMan10101, on 02/29/2008, -0/+0Oh shi I did this with a miilion outher keys INCLUDING Alt + 4 now i donty know wreres it is!*Sulks in solitary*
- Cerebral, on 02/27/2008, -0/+6...and remember to press Alt + F4 to set the new configuration.
- Minxiloni, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0try http://www.virtualnes.com
- SketchaMPM, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0same controls
- MWeather, on 02/27/2008, -0/+6Get an Optimus Maximus keyboard and change X to Z.
- Inglorion, on 02/27/2008, -0/+8Damn it would be cool if the applets had somehow recognized the 360 controller I have plugged in. Playing solely with a keyboard is awkward
- WayGroovy, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3http://www.pinnaclegameprofiler.com/
- ubitendo, on 02/27/2008, -0/+12Why didn't the submitter just link to www.virtualnes.com?
- purzzzell, on 02/27/2008, -0/+9it's called "blogspam"
- slapded, on 02/27/2008, -9/+3can someone post a code on how to embed these ? :)
- hysterix, on 02/27/2008, -0/+5No, no one can post "a code" for you.
- strictnein, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3You make a link to the people actually hosting the files and say "Visit here to play some cool NES games in your browser".
Bandwidth is expensive.
- namelessXsilent, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Wow some topics cant even get a top 5 on one page.
