Let's troll Digg making pointless comments.
***** IDIOT! - CharlesMay, on 10/11/2007, -2/+43Yes, as in, He climbed defence and escaped from deprison.
- speedballtucker, on 10/11/2007, -3/+39"Go into DTD and buy something right quick and WHA LA! Instant gold."
You mean "...voilà! Instant gold." It's French for "see there." Makes a lot more sense than "wha la," doesn't it? - WasabiBomb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24Thank you. You have no idea how much this annoys me.
Attention, Internet: If you don't know how to use a word, don't just guess at it- you'll look like an idiot. - TylerC, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25You have to stick to the games laws, if you go over the max amount of points possible, it will freeze because it knows.
- kefler, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21@djlosch -- what??
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I've
ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response was there anything
that could even be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now
dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy
on your soul. - LoneWolf01, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16Erm... It's on the page... http://www.timsvault.com/cheattools/tsearch.htm
- monsterenergy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17no, too much trouble, ill stick to the premade '10,000 gold' mode.
- Jolene, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15:/ The game freezes when I upgrade a certain amount of towers, the game freezes...
- acetv, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Hi! Welcome to Digg. You must be new here. We don't like people who post links to their websites.
In fact, if we ever find out where you live, we'll choke you until you die. - cha0sFB, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Might as well call the article "How to masturbate more efficiently"
- idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9It doesn't "know", it just breaks because it wasn't designed to work like that.
- Tunguska, on 10/11/2007, -10/+19Cheating's bad, m'kay.
- gnalakalaciath5, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9If you're going to use a memory editor, i'd recommend cheat engine ( http://cheatengine.org ), as it is much more advanced, has options like code injection, pointers, etc.
- 1807, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Man, growing up, getting extra lives and infinite gold was always called "codes" I guess "hack" does have a certain zing to it though.
- Unremarkable, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I'd digg that.
- scheper, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Yes, both defence and defense are correct.
- REM333, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I see that the hacked scores are already rolling in... 9001 points with 4 squirt towers...
- cell00, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7WHA LA, TUCHE BITc>HEZ

I love it when it people can't type words like those, it looks so hilariously dumb - NGliam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Flashs main number type ("Number") is a double, but AS3 now uses int and uints.
- SaxxonPike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Look at THIS gem someone posted:
"You multiply by eight because computers are based on a base 8 binary system. You’re looking up values stored in memory. That’s the best reason I can think of."
I wet myself a little at this one. - TylerC, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6There is no point, just for information ya know ;)
- there4iam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Fun.
You should try it sometime. - FeargusMcDuff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Doesnt that ruin the fun of the game?
- GoblinSoul, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5In the UK its "Defence"
- Unremarkable, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Its probably just a simple form of security. It stops nubs from just searching for their score and changing it.
As to why 8? Its an easy multiplication for the computer to preform. Multiplying by any multiple of 2 is a quick and easy process, making this technique not impact performance too heavily. - UberJumper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Can anyone explain to me why, you have to mutiply it by 8? Also i thought flash exclusively used doubles for storing numbers.
- Terr01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4So you think the 8-factor is an attempt to trivially obscure the value in memory, rather than some bizarreness of Flash's memory usage?
Myself, I'd try something like two semi-independent values. Game logic would ensure to change them both at the same time, but would frequently check if they disagreed. Most memory editing tools don't let you change both at the same moment. - Excessive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I was using Game Wizard under DOS. It was the first TSR cheating tool for DOS games.
Look at the situation now, there are dozens like it. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5You can do this with many games.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I used to PEEK and POKE my Commodore 64 on a regular basis.
>.> - NanoStuff, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Yup, the hex editor in Tsearch is a nice touch most memory editors don't have. If you want to hack a multiplayer game, you probably won't get much help here.
- esuedp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4What's the point of hacking it?
- Terr01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@nexterday: Yes, I know what they are. I'm TRYING to create a race condition.
The race condition can be safely avoided by my program, because I know how it's set up. Nobody except the program should be modifying those values in memory. If the program has multiple threads, I'll just use a lock.
The point is that memory editors make changes to memory from OUTSIDE the algorithm, so 99% of the time they will fail and the program will terminate because they didn't modify both memory values both in the right order and at the right time.
If they decompile the program somehow, then all bets are off, but it's an intentional race condition designed to trip up memory editing. - Rabid_Llama, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The multiply by 8 thing has me confused, too. Anybody have any insight on why that part's necessary?
- Terr01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"Terminate Stay Resident? TSR. Now there's an Acronym I've not heard in a long, long time."
- wonginator1221, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4CheatEngine is constantly updated, and it seems to have all the features that TSearch had. From my perspective, it works just as well. Would someone care to enlighten me on why Cheat engine isn't as popular?
- LEPT0N, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@sertis I didn't know how to do this... jerk.
Also though, it's sad that you can cheat in this game like this. DTD is a lot of fun to play, but looks like the leaderboards are meaningless. - DrCream, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5POKE 23659,0 - shift+Break! ha ha
- Terr01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Even one-second checking would do pretty well, when you consider the usual process taken by iterative-search memory editors. First time it crashes they'll be pretty deterred.
- dheatley96, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3http://i16.tinypic.com/6ew0xhv.jpg
i love ( . ) ( . )'s and exploits - rancidpony, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Cheat? What's the point.
- burkay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually, he is just right... except the choking part.
- missingnoh4x, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1...Base 8 binary? I would just guess that it's multiplied by 8 for all calculations, then divides it by 8 when showing your gold count just to slighty obfuscate the variable from people trying to find and hack it with this type of method.
- preecep, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm all for user created content, but to use it to break a free game that thousands of people enjoy is wrong.
- tymme, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Maybe it's just because I'm old school, but I knew this is what was happening with a lot of the TD scores when I saw 9999 lives, etc., and why I didn't bother playing for high scores.
It sure brings back the memories of doing this about 15 years ago with my Secret of the Silver Blades character files.... - missingnoh4x, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Maybe they could add a new fun mode with a built-in hex editor sidebar that lets you play with all - er, most, just stuff for the gameplay round - variables. 10k gold isn't enough for playing around!
- masteroftruth, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1To all those people who are saying "blablabla hacking is wrong blablabla you suck if you do it" if you think its wrong...DONT DO IT! If you like doing it, DO IT! For god sake people. People who are, you know, putting other people down because they cheat at a game (A GAME!!!) should think "hey if i dont like cheating, i shouldn't do it, and if i do then...hey...i'll do it!"
*First of many truthful rants by "masteroftruth"* - JLockeCU, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5Why are people who are pointing out the lameness of cheating on this game being dugg down? This is cheating at solitaire and bragging about your score to anonymous people. Dugg down for lameness, DTD is a great game, if you want more money, play the "for fun" rounds, and agreed to all of those who pointed out that hacking it is pointless.
- Sertis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Wow..you guys go ape ***** digging a tutorial which everyone already knew how to do? It even mentions using a very old memory editor(TSearch) instead of the best out there such as Cheat Engine!
