- colincornaby, on 12/12/2007, -3/+20Huh? As I recall, the iPhone doesn't use either. It has a connection right to YouTube's full backend, which Apple convinced YouTube to convert to H.264 a year or two ago.
- heartless_, on 12/12/2007, -1/+15I love the smell of competition in the air! Great to see these products move forward, resulting in better and better software packages. Porn in the pocket is just around the corner!
- XdigitalXdeathX, on 12/12/2007, -12/+26Biggest Difference:
Ocean uses youtube.com
iPhone uses m.youtube.com
Catalog is siiiiiiiiggggggggnificantly reduced on the mobile version. - Pimpalicious316, on 12/12/2007, -2/+14great, now grainy cell-phone footage of worthless crap is even easier to get onto youtube.
- fanboydcs, on 12/12/2007, -1/+11Wrong, it uses the h.264 content. Which youtube just released 90% of the videos on youtube, and any non h.264 content will automatically get converted if it has over 100 views
- crumbs, on 12/14/2007, -0/+5Ehm... how is this a 'Playable Web Game'?
- dagamer34, on 12/12/2007, -2/+6I'm still waiting for my iPhone to record video for crying out loud!
- lydecker, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4My GOD, this is so not the right place. Leave talks about who should be president in political threads.
- flammenwurfer, on 12/12/2007, -1/+5Why would you want it on another service that charges you out the ass for data and messaging? Helio includes unlimited messaging and data, among other things, with all their plans.
- Fordi, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3Very nice competition and all but IS NOT A GODDAMN PLAYABLE WEB GAME!!!
Put your damned posts in the right topic. - imacommi, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3Stop making all the rest of us RP fans look bad because you like to spam
- TheFrod, on 12/12/2007, -2/+5on the Iphone safari browser you can google search a youtube video and open it. the browser minimizes and opens directly to youtube, letting you browser the full youtube and google video library.
- flammenwurfer, on 12/12/2007, -1/+4Did you expect a mobile phone to be equal to a desktop computer?
- davidrools, on 12/12/2007, -1/+3bad
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2Orb does the same thing with any media. Why restrict yourself to youtube?
- colincornaby, on 12/12/2007, -2/+4Sure it does. The iPhone has access to YouTube's full catalog. At launch it didn't because YouTube was still converting all their content to H.264. I think they've finished with that by now. I've had no problem getting to random crap posted by friends on YouTube from my iPhone.
- Wolfbeta, on 12/12/2007, -1/+3Wasn't that the PSP's only selling point for its first couple of years?
- cwcentral, on 12/12/2007, -1/+3And $70/mo minimum for service on a shotty Sprint network (it's great as long as it doesn't drop connection) that will likely get overwhelmed with video uploads.
Bravo. Makes me want more to just get a EeePc and a 25$/mo 768Kbps service instead. - JoeRW, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2Actually all you need is a broadband phone, just go to www.ytpocket.com and download the TCPMP youtube player from there, the vids will open full screen and play all the youtube vids smoothly.
- eclipxe, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2Yea, but the iPhone is smart enough to attempt to load a YouTube link in the app.
- Sil3ncer7, on 12/12/2007, -1/+3I loaded it to my Ocean when I first found out it was released and I love it. Its a good way to minimize your Internet usage at work... :D
+10 for Helio, plus 20 for the ocean - fatlip, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2i'm so behind!
- flammenwurfer, on 12/12/2007, -1/+3I'm getting one when my retarded T-mobile contract is up.
Not because of this. I've just wanted one ever since they came out.
The Ocean is a pretty damn cool phone for the $95 it costs right now. Plus Unlimited messaging and data makes it a sweet deal. - OdinEye, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1Keep waiting. What a useless function to expect from a tiny little camera in a tiny little phone.
I can't fathom why people would be waiting to be able to record 15 seconds of video on a ***** little screen. - And please don't tell me "cause 'a YouTube dude" - you might as well just stamp "dork" on your forehead. - inactive, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Could be this guy doesn't like RP and is doing his best to make you all look crazy and it's working.
- DubbleA, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2They have a new link on their site comparing them to the iPhone:
http://compare.helio.com/ - Beaupedia, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1eclipxe is absolutely correct. Why the hell are people digging him down? astyanax is the one with the false information.
- Lionhart, on 12/12/2007, -2/+3The Helio Ocean is indeed an excellent phone. However it has one crippling problem... You can only use it on Helio's network..which is just leased from Sprint.. and Sprint is garbage to begin with.
- eclipxe, on 12/12/2007, -2/+3Incorrect. 3rd party J2ME apps now run on the Ocean. There are several SSH clients. (Check heliocity.net)
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2The grass is always greener.
- Beaupedia, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1That was before the new firmware, which solves all of these issues. Read up buddy.
- caralosm, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2i don't even know what that means, but your comment made me lol.
- eclipxe, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2Two corrections:
1) Neither the text nor IM interface on the Ocean is threaded
2) There are plenty of 3rd party apps. Over on heliocity.net they figured out how to wrap a lot of common J2ME apps to run on the Ocean. Opera Mini 4 works great - even with QWERTY support now.
(ex-Ocean owner here...iPhone ftw!) - Tenlow, on 12/12/2007, -3/+4Doesn't change the quantity of available videos for the iphone
- Beaupedia, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1The Firmware was updated a few weeks ago. Check the heliocity.net forums for more info.
- davidrools, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2Helio is an MVNO that runs on Sprint's network. Yes it has a proprietary OS without 3rd party app support (like the iphone) but has a handful of very well packaged apps built in (google maps, myspace mobile, threaded text/instant messaging) and is a fully capable of GPS navigation out of the box.
- fatlip, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2well luckily Opera Mini 4 has been ported over with pseudomouse and qwerty keyboard capabilities
http://www.heliocity.com - gage006, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2Now give me it on my BlackBerry!
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -2/+3...if you consider the fastest mobile broadband in the US (EVDO) to be garbage.
- dizzoknows, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1My colleagues and I have all had phones / PDAs with QWERTY keyboards. We were able to type quickly on these devices, but not as quickly as we do on our iPhones. This has become such an obvious, proven truth, that I assume that anyone who asserts that they are quicker on a tactile mobile keyboard than they are on the iPhone keyboard has simply not actually used the iPhone keyboard [properly] for more than an hour.
- fatlip, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2as an ocean user, i can tell you they havent updated the firmware yet. they did update a lot of applications, but not the core OS.
Helio/Ocean is the first Carrier/Device i've never had a single complaint about (and i've tried them all) - BenderFlexo, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1The screen is the size of a postage stamp, I held on next to my iPhone and was glad that I have a real screen.
- astyanax, on 12/12/2007, -4/+4yeah awesome except it doesnt run SSH or https - http://www.asty.org/wtf/?p=1
- gtaluvit, on 12/13/2007, -0/+0Agreed. I dealt with their customer service a few months back prior to the iPhone reduction in price. I bought the ocean under a deal for a $100 rebate. I dealt with their customer service for 3 weeks (14 calls) trying to get them to actually honor that deal. Multiple times they said they showed no sign of promoting this issue to the next "tier". Basically they wanted me to stop bothering them. I cancelled service and they told me how much I still owed. I paid it but they never processed the refund until AFTER the next months bill cycle. I got a $1.24 late fee which I called AGAIN about and they said there was nothing they could do. The girl said "I understand the principle of the issue sir, but is this something that you want to go to collections over a $1.24?"
I made sure I spent at least 15 minutes on the phone and then sent in a check for $1.25 just so they had to waste money mailing me every month saying they owe me $.01. Idiots.
// Happy iPhone owner cheering for a Helio demise. - dmadip, on 12/12/2007, -1/+1wtf is janky? is that good or bad?
- smoger, on 12/12/2007, -1/+1glad to see Helio getting some attention. i don't have the ocean.. i have the drift.. but hopefully positive attention like this will keep them in business. my experience with them so far has been perfect. i would like to see a more open approach to phones though.. i think they currently have 3 to choose from(the Drift was phasing out right as i bought it in early september)
- fatlip, on 12/12/2007, -1/+1not only does it use Sprint's network (which is absolutely perfect here in NY), but it's main roaming network is Verizon, so you pretty much always have 3G available
- eclipxe, on 12/12/2007, -1/+1Sorry but the Sprint SERO plans are the best you can get - UNLESS you want unlimited minutes where Helio is awesome. ($99/mo for unlimited everything)
- SirTwitchALot, on 12/12/2007, -1/+1Looks really cool, If Helio started letting people tether this phone I'd buy one.
