2) AJAX/XMLRPCRequests, so that updates can happen on a regular basis... Maybe every 5 seconds or so?
3) To split people up into rooms of 10 or so, so that the game doesn't become overloaded
and probably:
4) To limit the number of people playing to 100 or so, so that the server doesn't become overloaded.
I can see that 2 and 3 are sacrificed so that there can be so many people playing at once.
