- greenlivin, on 06/29/2009, -2/+24I love it! Unsuspecting zoo goers are faced with the reality of our natural environment and how we have screwed it all up.
- OnShakedown, on 06/29/2009, -1/+9cool. very subversive.
- ecoscott, on 06/29/2009, -2/+8Very cool- I love the creativity. Interesting to see zoos coming out on the activism/ social awareness side of the environmental debate!
- tenmenkilled, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5It's sad that I almost didn't notice the train tracks.
- Mazrin, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5Not bad =/= good.
Assuming it has no negative effects, outside of being ugly, the car would be about as traumatic to wildlife as a rock, and about as noticed.
This exhibit is not demonstrating negative effects, it's trying to get an emotional reaction out of you because it's aesthetically disturbing, and it worked. Stuff like this is what get's people to spend money on clean up projects that don't actually do anything, rather then one's that do. - mantis108, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5Interesting, it's like a hybrid performance art zoo.
- MothBoy, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5I don't know, they look pretty happy to me

Are the animals really so different than us? You know this lion is thinking the same thing that any pimply face teenager with a Range Rover would be thinking.

- nepidae, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Captain Planet, You're our Hero!
- TomGfromCanada, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2now the exhibits are more realistic
- TobiasParker, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2I'm not your buddy pal!
oh wait - OnShakedown, on 06/29/2009, -2/+4i guess you're not aware of the weeks of work that goes into cleaning and prepping those ships to make them safe to sink? that isn't happening with a broken down car.
- cesig, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Because of the oil and gas leaking into the water, for one.
- nepidae, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2your face is stupid.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Finally! a "Reality Zoo"!
- pennyjo306, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2This is an excellent idea. I wish I could see it in person.
- TobiasParker, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Mazrin, this is Digg, stop trying to use logic and intelligence to make a point. You shoulda just posted a Facepalm ASCII and had the speech bubble say "What will man destroy next" or something. Basically we all just have a "Will somebody think of the children" attitude which admires hysteria and sensationalism over common sense.
- jMichaelEdwards, on 06/29/2009, -2/+3good idea!
- Mazrin, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Oil and gas have value. Would likely have been drained before being ditched.
My point here is simply that the wreck in itself is not harmful. If they wanted to make a point about gas and oil, that should be the point. These scenes are depicted to be as aesthetically unsettling as possible, rather then demonstrate the actual damage caused. - OnShakedown, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1i think you're taking the settings too literally. it's not about the rhino being bothered, just because there's a rhino there. it's about eco-systems being altered.
The post clearly states that "Intended to confront the notion of pristine wildlife, the installation hopes to raise awareness about the destruction of animal habitat globally." - Mazrin, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1I'm not saying pollution or environmental damage isn't bad, guys, my point here is simply that these scenes are depicted to be as aesthetically unsettling as possible, rather than demonstrate the actual damage caused. I feel this weakens the point they are trying to make.
- Mazrin, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2Except that in some respects, it is. They don't just clean the ships because it would be bad to do otherwise, they salvage all the valuable materials within the ship.
The car would have gone through a similar salvaging prior to being ditched.
And as I've said in the other responses, this isn't about whether the car is clean, salvaged, or anything. This exhibit does nothing to demonstrate any actual harm to the environment, it just proves that it's ugly. - Mazrin, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2How did you jump from my statement to a conclusion about global climate change being man-made/not man-made? I'd like to see that logic.
My point here is simply that the wreck in itself is not harmful. These scenes are depicted to be as aesthetically unsettling as possible, rather then demonstrate the actual damage caused. - avianeddy, on 06/29/2009, -1/+1dish ish shtoopid
- GoKings, on 06/29/2009, -3/+3Mankind is a plague to this planet, there is no doubt about that. The era of mass consumption and destroying the environment needs to end, or it will end us in the future.
- Mazrin, on 06/29/2009, -1/+1Ok, so, lots of knee-jerk responses, but no one has actually stated why it -would- bother the rhino.
- ginetteginette, on 06/29/2009, -2/+2wut? a car rusting away in a pond is good?
- avianeddy, on 06/29/2009, -1/+1I'd love to see more of this type of awareness-raising. It's a very clever idea.
But there needs to be less talk and more action. - damnshoes, on 06/29/2009, -2/+1your life is stupid
- rockon4life45, on 06/29/2009, -3/+2this really isn't necessary. I mean, it's sad that animals have to deal with it in the wild, but in captivity too?
- TobiasParker, on 06/30/2009, -2/+1The computer you used to post that comment contains the following:
"Substances found in large quantities include epoxy resins, fiberglass, PCBs, PVC, thermosetting plastics, lead, tin, copper, silicon, beryllium, carbon, iron and aluminium.
Elements found in small amounts include cadmium, mercury, and thallium.[92]
Elements found in trace amounts include americium, antimony, arsenic, barium, bismuth, boron, cobalt, europium, gallium, germanium, gold, indium, lithium, manganese, nickel, niobium, palladium, platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, selenium, silver, tantalum, terbium, thorium, titanium, vanadium, and yttrium.
Almost all electronics contain lead and tin (as solder) and copper (as wire and printed circuit board tracks), "

SARCASM - avianeddy, on 06/29/2009, -4/+2"the husk of a car isn't going to bother a rhino"
Holy *****, I just had to laugh!!
No wonder some people still say Global Climate Change isn't man-made. - Mazrin, on 06/29/2009, -6/+3Some of this is dumb. Aside from stuff that's actually detrimental to the habitat, something like the husk of a car isn't going to bother a rhino, it'll only bother our delicate sense of whether it's pretty or not.
Please separate the two types of environmentalism.
One is actually concerned with the environment's habitability, the other just wants a pretty place to live. Let's spend our time and money on the version that actually matters.
Not all "junk" is bad, we sink ships in reefs to make it more livable for native species. - stompk291, on 06/29/2009, -10/+3this is stupid.
- MothBoy, on 06/29/2009, -10/+1Or, perhaps, unsuspecting zoo goers are shown the reality that the animals swimming with cars and toxic waste and oil derricks look just as happy as the animals they normally see caged up in a zoo. Apparently all those things really aren't a big deal to them.
Maybe this wasn't such a brilliant idea after all.

What is Digg?
