I'm the proud owner of a mutt who gets tons of compliments due to his very unique look. Plus he's got good traits from all of the breeds; he's very intelligent and extremely well-behaved. Got him at 8 weeks and the shelter informed us that he's a mix of Doberman, Lab, Collie, and Beagle. He's 100% awesome.

She slowly died of a rare lung cancer, that spread throughout her body in a matter of weeks. 3 weeks before her death, you couldn't tell anything was wrong. I had to contact the breeder telling him the news, he said that her mother had died of the same thing.

- InfiniteNothing, on 06/28/2009, -0/+4I 70% agree with you. There are purebreds with minimal ancestor loss. German Shepherds come to the top of my mind. Small dogs live pretty long in general. All dogs have the potential for cancer when they get old though.

The unfortunate truth about this type of cancer is that by the time its is diagnosed it is almost surely to have spread.

- saltybull, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2The bigger the Dog the shorter the life of the dog is the general rule. You get a great dane as a pup you know right off it's going to be hart break in 8-9 years tops! I have owned several Golden Retrievers...... 9 years average! before cancer took them!
It would have been nice if the Victorians that created all these breads , chilled out on humping the mom and sister and a little more concentration of longevity instead of looks!
In my world, instead of the AKA still looking for the best of 1890's breed characteristics and concentrated more on health, longevity and happiness of the breed along with the characteristics would be a break through in Dogs!
