- Awwzm, on 09/25/2009, -3/+104Let the Pandas die?!
That makes me a sad Panda. - Assassinanus, on 09/25/2009, -7/+66Spend more money on species that are vital to the ecosystem.
- LittleDas, on 09/25/2009, -1/+52That's a pretty sensationalist title. Basically what he's advocating for is environmental triage. If you can't save everyone (or every animal), devote your resources in such a way that you do the greatest good. To be honest, I'm inclined to agree.
- leonidas333, on 09/25/2009, -4/+55My girlfriend cried when I told her this.
She stoped after 5 minutes and all she could say was people should have implemented population control, with only 2 children per couple. - newsmonster, on 09/25/2009, -1/+49He'll regret saying that when the Panda Over Lords rise up and enslave the unexpecting human race.
- bicyclethief, on 09/25/2009, -1/+42then you guys had hot panda sex while you both cried
- lead2thehead, on 09/25/2009, -1/+41That panda would kill you and everyone you love if it had the chance.
- aethelberga, on 09/25/2009, -3/+42If they weren't cute this wouldn't be an issue. I bet there are plenty of animals who aren't getting the WWF-love just because they're ugly or scaly or both.
I remember reading on Digg, some time back, that female pandas are fertile for around two hours every two years. That doesn't sound like a species that wants to live, to tell you the truth. - AgentRoyIV, on 09/25/2009, -4/+38I wanted to put a bullet between the eyes of every panda that wouldn't screw to save its species...
- medfreak, on 09/25/2009, -1/+27If Pandas are all "cuddly" and "cute", and thus raise more money for conservation causes, then I guess they earned their millions in funds to save their species.
Who knows, maybe "cuddly" and "cute" is all the evolutionary traits they need to survive. - milwaukeesbeast, on 09/25/2009, -18/+41how does it feel to go out with a ***** retard?
- Lefts, on 09/25/2009, -4/+26I'm sorry that this guy thinks that the tropical forests filled with ugly and disgusting insects, reptiles, amphibians, and rodents is worth more than your panda, which is one species towards the top of the biomass pyramid, can only conceive 2-3 days of the year, and tends to crush their own cubs after their born.
God, what is he thinking? - immatellyouwhat, on 09/25/2009, -0/+20Not for long...
- Floyder, on 09/25/2009, -0/+20I, for one, will welcome our new Panda overlords.
- Lefts, on 09/25/2009, -1/+21Given that female Pandas can only conceive 2-3 days every year, I'm surprised they have made it this far.
- LittleDas, on 09/25/2009, -2/+22I lol'd a heartless lol.
- jsffive, on 09/25/2009, -0/+19Maybe. But the real question is: who said it before Carlos?
- ColeChampagne, on 09/25/2009, -0/+19Evidently, Chris Packham is the only person in the world that never saw this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzRH3iTQPrk
I ask, how many times have bio-plausible ecosystems got 40 million views?
In all seriousness, saving pandas is the equivalent of sending a man to the moon, it may not be the most cost effective thing to do, but it is one of those things that people love and it keeps awareness (and funding) going to the broader scope of the programs. - PeanutCheeseBar, on 09/25/2009, -3/+22He's got a girlfriend, so apparently he's one step ahead of you.
- sapo916, on 09/25/2009, -3/+20Probably better than only doing it with your hand.
- liquisoft, on 09/25/2009, -1/+16People will be upset by the idea because pandas are cute.
Had he said "Let the anglerfishes die" people wouldn't have as much of a problem with it.
(This is an anglerfish, btw: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglerfish ) - kjava206, on 09/25/2009, -0/+15In recent evolutionary history it was not a very good idea to have to many pandas in one place, so their dropping fertility was a beneficial evolutionary advancement. There is always the possibility that, like coyotes, their fertility rates will rise as time goes on. One example of this has been the explosion in baby panda births in captivity over the last ten years. The article ignores this to be eye catching and have a sensationalist headline.
- KaivenTor, on 09/25/2009, -0/+14Why aren't we cloning pandas instead?
- Stiverton, on 09/25/2009, -1/+15People should realize that having less kids is a good idea, but unfortunately people aren't smart enough.
- EnderSaveUs, on 09/25/2009, -0/+13Like sea otters, saviors of the kelp forests. They're just as cute as (or even more so than) pandas. =)
- askantik, on 09/25/2009, -4/+16I don't think he goes out with you, so he wouldn't know.
- Qumahlin, on 09/26/2009, -1/+13"people should have implemented population control, with only 2 children per couple. "
Your GF is right and its a fact that most of the world wants to ignore. http://www.optimumpopulation.org/
Humans are the absolute worst species to have unchecked population growth as we use more resources and create more waste than any other species on the planet. People write this off by saying "by the time its an issue we will have come up with a scientific resolution, or we will be living in colonies in space or undersea"
No one wants to discuss what happens when the population continues to grow and no solution to feed and manage the waste of everyone is found.
I don't advocate we come up with strict and sudden population control, but anyone who thinks that it is not an issue and will NEVER come up is absolutely wrong and is living with their head in the sand.
Remember folks, this is not an "if" its a matter of "when". Unless an epidemic of gigantic scale occurs or humans simply stop breeding as often we simply have no answer as to where future generations are going to live, what they are going to eat, and how they are going to dispose of their waste.
Even though there are many countries where birth rates are lower than needed for population stability/replacement, you then have other countries with birth rates that are far higher than what is sustainable. I haven't even bothered to fully discuss how not only is our growth an issue but the fact that each generation uses exponentially more resources than the last due to technology makes the problem even worse. - vofuse, on 09/25/2009, -1/+13Chris Packham doesn't care about pandas.
- immatellyouwhat, on 09/25/2009, -1/+12*sad hot panda sex
- kjava206, on 09/25/2009, -0/+10FTA: "Packham says he does not want the pandas to die but argues they might not be worth saving.
"But let's face it: Conservation, both nationally and globally, has a limited amount of resources, and I think we're going to have to make some hard, pragmatic choices."
What a terribly inaccurate headline. He is not saying "let them die" he is saying "let's spend money elsewhere and protect biodiversity"
And even that is complete ***** as the money used to care for pandas is donated by people who want that money to go to saving pandas. A great deal by China who put forward the money to save their national symbol. There are a great many ways to spend our money in the US that would be better for biodiversity than protecting the bald eagle, but as our national symbol it has many layers of importance beyond efficient use of funding.
What a terrible, sensationalist piece of garbage this article is! - Zymophideth, on 09/25/2009, -1/+10The Panda's must die!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANg7iPu9DAg
But seriously, Pandas draw crowds to Zoos which support research and whatnot. - inactive, on 09/25/2009, -0/+8i'm with you bro. killer whale? ***** that noise
- immatellyouwhat, on 09/25/2009, -0/+8Let's just get rid of all the Monochrome animals while we're at it!
- Moralogic, on 09/25/2009, -0/+8But in the bible god told me to have lots of kids. It even says that sex without a chance of propagation is a sin. It is a sin to have sex for pleasure, and to masturbate. So every time I have sex it is to spread my seed. That is why I was never taught about contraceptives.
/s (Though I hope it isn't needed. It is always best to be safe. /s is like a condom in a way.) - Truedirt, on 09/25/2009, -0/+8Ah! Pandemonium !
- Vindexus, on 09/25/2009, -1/+8Go on.
- ZenMojo, on 09/25/2009, -0/+7***** black jaguars. Freaks of nature!
- sapo916, on 09/25/2009, -0/+6How about we just paint existing bears, cheaper.
- WHOOMP, on 09/25/2009, -0/+6I don't really like those kinds of arguments... I feel keeping pandas around just for the sake of having them in existence seems like a reasonable way to spend time and money in comparison to the countless other more expensive, arguably more pointless things we as a species spend our resources on. Just the thought of having my children think about pandas the same way I think about dinosaurs, mystical, magnificent, and seemingly beyond the realm of reality just because they've become extinct, gives me a cold feeling deep in my heart.
- bigbadgoat, on 09/25/2009, -0/+6I want to put a bullet between the eyes of every panda that wouldn't ***** to save it's species.
-Narrator (Fight Club) - UltraMegaFilms, on 09/25/2009, -1/+7I think the underlying point is "Save the Pandas" isn't really going to happen, because it really isn't possible. I say keep the money on Pandas and we can at least learn more about a dead end species, if that's how it's going down. I'm actually surprised that naturalist Chris Packham didn't think of that.
What the ***** is a naturalist? - FleazZz, on 09/25/2009, -2/+8Everything on Digg is true.
I have AIDS but Digg cured me. - acknotSW, on 09/25/2009, -4/+10Can't remember who said it but it went something like this:
"I hate every panda that won't ***** to save it's own species" - norwegianlegion, on 09/25/2009, -4/+9It did kind of evolutionarily drive itself into a corner. Obviously it's cute, but it also deserves it's fate; it should be a more resilient species than it is and at a certain point we have to just throw our hands in the air.
- psiphre, on 09/25/2009, -1/+6no, that's a wikipedia page about anglerfish.
- chiddler, on 09/26/2009, -0/+5***** yeah.
This is why my only child will be adopted.
Everyone laughs at me when I tell them this...
ty - satirenine, on 09/26/2009, -0/+5Wait, I got it. We need to send a panda to the moon.
- TheFhiz, on 09/25/2009, -0/+5The panda needs to improve its image to win back the Internet.
http://mediabane.com/10-things-the-panda-can-chang ... - mksmothers, on 09/25/2009, -0/+5I bet if Pandas tasted like chicken, there would be more of them.
