- GeekNurse, on 11/08/2009, -5/+19We're whalers on the moon
We carry a harpoon.
But there ain't no whales
So we tell tall tales
And sing our whaling tune. - WordsnCollision, on 11/08/2009, -1/+14Where are the post-1986 whaling on the moon photos?
- sladek, on 11/08/2009, -0/+12I hate it when the last page of a slide show is just links to other things
- Junkyarddawg, on 11/08/2009, -2/+14There's two ***** camps when it comes to whaling.
There's the "ban all whaling always, because whales are cute and intelligent" *****, and the "allow all whaling because tradition" *****. One side tries to stop hunting of the most common large wild mammal on earth, the pilot whale, while the other pretends to be doing science while turning endangered blue whales into dogfood.
I'd like to see someone take a rational approach, and advocate sustainable harvesting. Quotas, no killing of endangered species, and allowed but regulated trade in products of species which are not endangered.
Doesn't seem like much hope for that, though, so until the pro-whaling ***** sober up I'm going to side with the anti-whaling ***** because at least they're not destroying a valuable resource. - kinerry, on 11/08/2009, -3/+12no, they miss the days when their members actually knew what they were talking about and didn't spread misinformation

- beloitpiper, on 11/08/2009, -0/+5Bone, blubber, meat, oil... Whales were used in a LOT of commercial products in the 19th century.
- TheBanditKing, on 11/08/2009, -0/+5I was really looking forward to seeing some photos from 1800-1900, not that the pics weren't great but it was still a bit of a disappointment to see they were 1900-1950 with not a single one pre-1900. title things correctly ffs!
- kinerry, on 11/08/2009, -7/+12Greenpeace is a bunch of chumps.

- pimpofpixels, on 11/08/2009, -1/+4There's a certain amount of majesty that accompanies the remembrance of Man's hunting of the largest creatures to ever inhabit the earth. I hindsight it does seem to be a terrible waste. Fortunately, recent studies have suggested that whale populations have be rebounding, and may return to their original levels within a few hundred years so long as we preserve the ban on hunting.
- robinthehood, on 11/08/2009, -1/+4"To the last, I grapple with thee; from hell's heart, I stab at thee; for hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee."
- slashdotordigg, on 11/08/2009, -1/+4Back then....it was cool. Now they are endangered, so not cool. But if you go to any fishing town, you might be able to get hands on some whale meat as well. I am not talking about the one in Japan. Fishing boats occasionally catch them by accident. And Large whale, dead and weighing a ton, can be valued $30,000-$100,000 in some places. (no wonder some folks catch them intentionally)

- Vanderkeif, on 11/08/2009, -2/+4Greenpeace attempts to recruit members and donations on college campuses, and many areas in downtown Austin. They pretend to be your friend by showing you some sad photos, or statistics from *****, and then lead you on to a membership plan which is costs a "donation" of anywhere from 10-100 dollars. They get and deserve the finger all the time.
- TheBanditKing, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2no, thats true, and the eskimo shots were as primative as i could have wished to see but pre-1900 photos do have a certain allure to them and bad titling is bad.
- mksmothers, on 11/08/2009, -2/+4whale oil was used in hospitals for lighting in the 19th century. Are you against helping people hippie?
- Junkyarddawg, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2Lostlyrics?
- beloitpiper, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2I doubt they're fossilized. They're probably just taken from a dead whale. And plus, archaeologists focus on human remains. Paleontologists study animal fossils.

- thexder, on 11/08/2009, -4/+5Those whale wars people are a bunch off goofball idiots who somehow got people to give them money to throw chemicals at whaling ships. They're crazy stupid. Their cause is not bad, but their method...omg I can't help but laugh at them.

- chinaman1212, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1Picture 5 of 15 says the sailors are holding fossilized whale bones. Are they also Archeologists?
- inactive, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1Then what do they make soap from now?.
- Vanderkeif, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1You'd be surprised how much oil a whale releases when you get them scared in a corner.
- Navicerts, on 11/09/2009, -1/+2How people this stupid even figure out how to work the internet is beyond me...
- aFalsePositive, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Wow... the Japanese really do not like whales.

- slugpellet63, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1Was used in the softening of jute, allowing it to be processed by machines.
According to wiki "Jute is the second most important vegetable fibre after cotton; not only for cultivation, but also for various uses". - qerplonk, on 11/08/2009, -2/+3Good thing we started using oil for fuel so we didn't have to kill all the whales, eh greenies?
- Navicerts, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Um, this is 1800-1900 the whole world was killing whales.
- partrow, on 11/08/2009, -1/+2Greenpeace. These people need to get jobs, but they probably don't have to because many of them are nothing but 'trust fund babies' who had to get cuaght up in a cause to gain any hint of self worth.
More of their ships and boats need to be summarily sunk, prefearbly with Greenpeace fanatics in them, and their people should be arrested every time they do something illegal, which is often. - arcade, on 11/08/2009, -6/+7Not disturbed at all. Was and is killed for several things - including the meat, baleen and quite possibly oil too.
And it tastes quite well. -
