- harrypowers, on 09/07/2008, -5/+26whales leap from the water? OMG, to the bat poles.
- jthhtj, on 09/08/2008, -2/+18WTF is a twitcher? Someone that twitches? Please enlighten me on how it has any relevance to the story. I just woke up and my eyes are a bit blurry.
- maverickapollo, on 09/08/2008, -0/+15A twitcher is someone that watches birds
- Tentura, on 09/08/2008, -1/+15Although this a great photo of the behavior, I think the claim that it is an "extremely rare photograph" is a little misleading. It is not uncommon for Humpbacks to breach - I've seen it myself in Hawaii. I assume they mean it is an uncommon behavior in Britain? Still, a stunning photo.
- zadadka, on 09/08/2008, -0/+11You'll be fine Jonah ;)
- bmson, on 09/08/2008, -1/+12Extremely rare?

There are allot of pictures of humback whales jumping. - creole, on 09/08/2008, -2/+12Humpback whales weigh 35-45 tons:
http://www.blueoceansociety.org/mn.htm
That's impressive that something that heavy can leap out of the water. Away with your cynicism! - OfNumbers, on 09/08/2008, -0/+9It's practicing dodging harpoons.
- harrypowers, on 09/07/2008, -1/+9Or in playgounds. My God, think of the children; who will think of the children?
- Swift2, on 09/08/2008, -5/+13Exceedingly rare? Well, maybe in England. I spent an hour off Nova Scotia a few years ago, and there was an entire pod breaching and rolling right around the boat. Fantastic, but not rare. Very common in their breeding waters in the Caribbean, not really uncommon as far north as Newfoundland. P'rhaps they get more inhibited off Old Blighty.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -2/+10It's great that someone had the presence of mind to snap that shot! Perfect moment.
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -0/+7When they have filters instead of teeth and eat microscopic organisms, they don't bother me so much.
- tubaros, on 09/08/2008, -0/+7So youve never been to Amsterdam then... :-)
- Felix2Fingerz, on 09/08/2008, -1/+7Its a great photo and all, but I dont see how they can call it extreemly rare. I been on plenty of whale watches and seen humpbacks do this before.
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -1/+7Away with you, pedobear.
You think of the children way too much already... - graemee, on 09/08/2008, -0/+6I knew I should've taken that left turn at Albuquerque
- jthhtj, on 09/08/2008, -0/+5oh... thanks!
- Greengoo, on 09/08/2008, -2/+6Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children???
- jerryn, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4When I was on vacation at Cape Cod during the first week of July 2008 I went on a Whale Watch out of Provincetown and shot
this picture. http://www2.nfnnet.org:8001/IMGP1695.jpg The Marine Biologist on the Whale Watch said they believe whales do this to
get the parasites (barnacles and stuff) off of them. - MacBookForMe, on 09/07/2008, -1/+5What an amazing force!
- gordonj, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4"Yeah, but what if you were in the ocean, and one of those ***** just happens to come along eating krill and you're in the way?"
Filter feeding whales have remarkably tiny throats. In the case of the blue whale, the largest animal to ever exist on earth, it could only swallow something about the size of a grapefruit. - Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4Not quite microscopic but you have the right idea. Krill can be anywhere from 1 cm - 15 cm in length. Kind of crazy to think about how the largest animals on earth surviving by feeding on an animal that is only 1 cm long.
- NtroP, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3While that is a great picture, I've got dozens of them just like that of humpbacks, grey whales and killer whales. It's not that unusual of an event. Maybe if you're a city-bound photographer, but not if you spend any time at all taking wildlife photos in Prince William Sound.
- thegrantman, on 09/08/2008, -1/+4Ross Newham isn't looking very hard. Image hosts,National Geographic,.......
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -1/+4Yeah, but what if you were in the ocean, and one of those ***** just happens to come along eating krill and you're in the way?
- IHaveIssues, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3hehe...you use Safari.
- diggopolous, on 09/08/2008, -1/+4Free Willy?
Catch Willy!....and make him do tricks! - blackinthmiddle, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3Agreed. I went on a whale watching boat off the coast of Cape Cod a few weeks ago and they were jumping about, slapping their tails on the water over and over again, doing rolls and just swimming all over the place. Granted, the article did say that it's rare to get these shots off the coast of England, but in the North East US, they're not rare at all.
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3Yeah, but this one is jumping to the left.
- DrDigg, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2http://www.flickr.com/photos/47147838@N00/28414897 ...
Not that good of a shot, but it was amazing to watch. There are a few better (non-whale) shots in that stream though. - jerryn, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2There's a lot of possible reasons why whales breach. It could be some sort of social behavior .. kind of like when rams head butt each other, a sign of strength. It could also be a method that the mammal rids itself of parasites such as barnacles and whale lice (small crabs that feed on whale skin).
- jerryn, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Hey.. post a link of the shot you took of the whale breaching.
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uY4x5V-EzP0/SMJnrVgiEDI/ ...
(from http://scillywebcam.blogspot.com/) - tightscrummy, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Put your bible down, very few whale species would be able to swallow you.
- gambl0r, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Yeah this is true. One whale did this on the whale watching trip II was on out of Cape Cod. The guides made it sound like it was an everyday occurrence. I did not get a photo of it, sadly... but I got some of them at the surface:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/no3rdw/2771994920/in/ ... - sobapop, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2it could just be rare for the UK area. and like what jerryn said, taking a good shot of one (when you're least expecting it, furthermore) isn't that easy.
- jerryn, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Thanks. The shot was taken around 3:30pm We were facing east and the sun was covered by a storm rolling in from the west.
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -1/+3If by *rare* they mean *something I've seen photos of dozens of times* then yes, the article is accurate.
- Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2That's a beautiful shot, nice job. Looks like that was taken early morning?
- DrDigg, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2The whale watching trip I went on in Juneau a few months ago said they see breaching on about 10% of the trips. I got a picture of one breaching myself, not as good a picture as this one, but hardly a rare event.
- arcanesmile, on 09/08/2008, -4/+6is anyone else terrified of whales, or is it just me?... something about a creature that can swallow me whole... ugh..
- marse623, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2lol the sea was angry hahahaha
- HippyInASuit, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Sorry, but I have to bury this. Whales jump out of the water quite regularly and there are literally thousands of pictures of it. Go whale watching once in your life and you're likely to see the same thing, as I have several times. They seem to know there are people on the boats and like to show off.
- mconstan, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2At first glance I thought this article was something related to the Twitter Fail Whale.
- V1ncent, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Oh yeah, Jack Nicholson can't do that!
- belgar, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Nah, just with fricken' laserbeams.
- rossdouglas, on 09/08/2008, -2/+4Is there a large version of this picture anywhere? Make a good desktop for when I tire of the MV Augusta f4 senna.
- Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2I have mixed feelings about this. As a person who spends a lot of his time out in the ocean I've seen dolphins, whales and Orcas in their natural environment. There have been days when from one end of the horizon to the other you could see in the distance dolphins jumping out of the water, literally thousands of them. Or I'll see them at the beach playing in the surf.
Then I see them at Sea World confined to a relatively shallow tank and it kind of sucks knowing how they live in the wild but the animals living in the tanks are well cared for and definitely look like they love playing with their human caretakers. Most importantly they are educating the public about what lives out in the ocean, helping to create an emotional connection and hopefully a desire to protect them. - arkaycee, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1I saw this pic on the LOLwhales website with the caption, "INVISIBLE KLINGON BIRD-OF-PREY."
