"Ms Spiteri said both her family and the complaining neighbour border on a cattle farm, and can’t understand how the smell was traced to Emily.
‘‘The cows go right up to their property too. We thought, ‘You’re kidding – seven cows to one miniature pony?’ We were quite shocked by what we thought was a joke at first.”" - inactive, on 11/28/2008, -3/+168I'm all for classifying the pony as therapy rather than livestock. Still, one small pony shouldn't produce that much of a stench if it's properly cared for.
- ToddSchishler, on 11/29/2008, -0/+99Allegedly the same neighbour lives beside a property that owns 7 cows.
Sounds like to me like he's just being a douche. - JakeKreber, on 11/29/2008, -6/+93see the comments under the article.
"1) The town of Caledon prides itself on being the 'Greenest' community in Ontario - it's greatest pride is it's successful 'green bin' and composting program. have you ever driven through a subdivision in the middle of summer and caught a whiff? Beleive me - it's horrible. What's the difference?
2) In response to the 'doctor' - the claim is that riding can improve strenth and control over the muscles in the childs back and neck, therefore helping him to be able to sit up and keep his head straight. THIS is how it would assist in his eating, have you ever tried to swallow with your neack and head pointed downwards?
3) This article fails to mention that the complaining neighbours property joins onto a cow farm on the other side of their house.
4) Most properties on this street are farms, it is only bad luck that this one is zoned otherwise.
5) In regards to the person who posted that - well, if they lilve in a rural community, they should be able to drive a short distance to take the kid on a horse ride. Excuse me, but just because there may be farms with horses nearby, does not mean that one can simply show up someone's door and state: "Excuse me, but I have a child with disablities, do you mind if we come and ride your horses every day?' that is absurd. The nearest facility which could accomodate this is in Guelph, which is over an hour away from their home.
6) The family has owned this home for over 40 years - why should they have to move away?
This is not exactly a case of someone having a farm animal in their backyard - it si a large property already equippped with barns and stables in a farming town. this neighbour obviously has other issues - I wish they had posted a photo of him in the article as well." - TrevorBelmont, on 11/29/2008, -7/+78Forget the question of therapeutic usefulness for a moment. Here are the facts as I see them.
A sick little kid has a ***** up life that is apt to get worse before it gets better (IF it gets better).
This sick little kid has a pony.
Riding the pony makes this sick little kid very, very happy.
End of ***** story.
If this kid were my neighbor and I had to smell pony-poopie all day it would make me happy. That's the smell of a sick little kid being happy! My shutting of my ***** mouth and tolerating a stink would be my way of doing something really, really good for someone who really, really needed it, every day. Just like that, I get to feel like an unsung hero just by doing nothing at all. - PidgeonDeath, on 11/29/2008, -2/+61It was mentioned on the radio that the complaining neighbor's house is right beside a property with SEVEN cows... How can they be sure where that smell is coming from?
- Rikushix, on 11/29/2008, -5/+50Rules are rules, in my opinion, but I also think it's perfectly valid to suggest that the pony should be classified as property for therapeutic purposes. That's clearly what it is. They aren't training it for show, or breeding it for other ponies or anything like that. Not exactly fulfilling what "livestock" are intended for. Whether or not the neighbour is justified in complaining about the smell, the kid should be able to keep the pony, end of story.
- Ace2016, on 11/28/2008, -41/+85The article seems biased, the neighbour could have a valid point about the small. If you are going to keep a horse in a residential area you have a responsibility to clean up after it so it doesn't smell.
- Tawney, on 11/29/2008, -4/+47After reading the title, I was expecting this to be an Onion article. Unfortunately, it's another real example of human jackassery.
- FiestyPumpkin, on 11/29/2008, -2/+43I grew up on a farm that had over 200 horses. The smell was not that bad at all. However, when you drive past the cow farms in Rising Sun the smell is just awful - so much so that I sometimes have to hold my breath as I pass. Cows are much, much stinkier that horses. With that being said, the smell is most likely coming from the neighbors that have the cows and is NOT coming from the miniature pony.
Besides, I would not classify the pony as "livestock" as it is not being used to produce food, fiber, or labor. I would classify the pony as a pet. - Alegoo92, on 11/29/2008, -4/+45This is an example of why "Zero tolerance" or "blanket laws" don't work. There are always exceptions: like a miniature horse used for therapy for a child with cerebral palsy that need to be taken care of individually and not subjected to the same old law.
- spyd3rweb, on 11/29/2008, -6/+45Zoning laws are ***** anyways. I should be able to do whatever I want with my property as long as its not violating someone else's property rights, and in the case that it did, the proper remedy would be for them to take me to court.
- AmyVernon, on 11/28/2008, -10/+48Wow. That neighbor seriously needs to get his butt kicked.
- sk8ngame, on 11/29/2008, -1/+39Just because somethings a law, doesnt necessarily mean its right.
- AikoMiko, on 11/29/2008, -6/+40The other side would be "Sorry you are ***** up for life, but i don't like stinky things, so screw Jerry's kids."
- BeShirtHappy, on 11/28/2008, -8/+40This is a disgrace. Let Sam keep his pony!
- JoeVet, on 11/29/2008, -0/+28This pony shouldn't count as livestock just as seeing eye dogs don't count as pets.
- frieddonuts, on 11/29/2008, -2/+30This sounds like a really bad Lifetime movie.
- t0ny, on 11/29/2008, -10/+38WHAT THE ***** IS WRONG WITH THOSE PEOPLE.
- blacklilyninja, on 11/29/2008, -2/+30this sounds like the neighbor has a personal issue with these people and is using the pony as an excuse to be a dickead. One of the comments on that story says the next neighbor down has 7 cows and its allowed because its zoned properly. His opinion was the smell the person complained about was likely coming from there.
i live in a rural town in western canada. Zoning or not cows can smell up the whole town. Lets just say we know when the auction is in town. The pony is of no consequence except to the child. - JakeKreber, on 11/29/2008, -1/+26The neighbor lives on a farm with seven cows.
- JoeVet, on 11/29/2008, -1/+26The stench is undoubtedly from the cattle farm that both properties border. Some neighbors are just dicks.
- ptrcd003, on 11/29/2008, -1/+25You realise the neighbour has a number of cows on the other side of them right? Theres no way they would be able to smell the pony over something like 8 cows
- andyb747, on 11/29/2008, -2/+25It's a service animal. Dogs are not allowed in many public places but seeing eye dogs are.
-produce a doctors note and this livestock ordinance and neighbor can go ***** themselves. - joebachana, on 11/29/2008, -6/+29Heartbreaking. Truth is the neighbor will probably win if the property is not zoned to allow for the pony on that property. Sounds like the neighbor needs some psychotherapy.
- SilverBack101, on 11/29/2008, -2/+24***** amen. Preach it! If I could ***** pay for you to fly to this town and give this same ***** speech at the town hall I'd believe it would be money well spent.
- mm3guy, on 11/29/2008, -2/+23***** off
- miggie, on 11/29/2008, -2/+23If all of you read the other story that someone else linked to you will find that the property in question is near cattle farms. The neighbor complained about them having bon fires on their property last year which they are entitled to. So now he is complaining about the pony. He just doesn't like these people. I had a neighbor when I was a kid that had a cow as a pet they do smell. They smell is most likely from the nearby cows.
- boomchockalocka, on 11/29/2008, -0/+20http://www.poopsenders.com
- Alegoo92, on 11/29/2008, -2/+22They told me to watch out for Scott..
- jcaino, on 11/29/2008, -0/+20get the pony registered as a therapy animal...then you're all set. just keep the manure pile right on the property line afterwards to really piss the neighbor off.
- lovemorgul, on 11/28/2008, -9/+29I think they should be allowed to keep it. Riding the pony will definitely help with the kid's and also the more of such therapy she gets now the better.
- nowsourcing, on 11/28/2008, -7/+27What a bunch of jerks. Sounds like they should move to a neighborhood that can be a little more sensitive.
- AikoMiko, on 11/29/2008, -6/+24Anyone have the neighbors address? i'd love to send them my personal opinion of them.
p.s. Anyone know what it costs to mail a turd to Canada? - consterXnation, on 11/29/2008, -2/+19Why is it that there's always some local ordinance about neighbors having pets but never one about neighbors being douchebags?
- Paranor01, on 11/29/2008, -1/+16Well I'm sure by the time the pony dies, the child will understand some respect of death. He has cerebral palsy, that does not mean he has a mental deficiency.
- jikmo, on 11/29/2008, -1/+15I think you missed the part of the article where they mentioned that it's a farming town and the guy lives next to 7 cows that all ***** on their own lawn.
Getting rid of 1 pony won't put a dent in the smell of that town. - KittensRunAmok, on 11/29/2008, -3/+17"On the other hand, the neighbor shouldn't be subjected to the smell of horse ***** all the time either."
The neighbour can't handle the smell of horse *****, but the cow ***** from the next door farm is ok? The neighbour must be some kind of ***** connoisseur. - starphish, on 11/29/2008, -0/+14The neighbor has cows. My mother lives in an area where there are both horses and cows nearby, and so does my sister. Cow ***** is a profoundly stronger smell than horse *****. Wether it's worse or not is a matter of opinion, but it is certainly stronger.
And you're correct, he does have rights. That doesn't mean that he should exercise them though. Sometimes the kind choice is the right choice. - jp12380, on 11/29/2008, -5/+18I had a pony!
-MANYA - nbluth, on 11/29/2008, -1/+14The neighbours have something like 8 cows, if they can actually smell a pony over that then they are super people
- guabancex, on 11/29/2008, -1/+14How do you propose to "fix" cerebral palsy? If you've got a solution, I'm sure the medical community would be thrilled to hear of it.
- fegul, on 11/29/2008, -1/+14LOUD NOISES!!
- jmorato, on 11/29/2008, -1/+14http://www.town.caledon.on.ca/contact-ty.asp
contact them and let them know how you feel. i did. - ExoBit, on 11/29/2008, -2/+14Borderline, but not quite over the line yet. So, that said, LET'S GIT 'EM!
- kismetropolis, on 11/29/2008, -2/+14TrevorBelmont, your kind and compassionate heart has made me really happy to read your comment. Thank you for saying it.
- Subpoena, on 11/29/2008, -1/+12Cerebral Palsy is not mental retardation you *****. His brain is fine, it just doesn't have control over his muscles.
- specter19, on 11/29/2008, -13/+24The neighbor is just being a typical douche bag. Oh the smell is bothering me, "I'd rather have a very sick little boy go without his pony so i don't have to smell it boo hoo" I'd like to take a dump on that guys front door step, see what he thinks of that smell. haha
