- uptown, on 09/05/2008, -2/+57Dogs are destructive because they're not provided with ample exercise and mental stimulation. Get your dog out on long walks or out to play a couple times a day for a duration suitable for the breed, and you won't have those problems. Cute dogs though..... here's mine:

Buried for utter stupidity and ignorance.
Number 1 most destructive dog: ignorant and lazy dog owners. - d4ftpunk, on 09/06/2008, -1/+25Rule nr.1 when making a list should be:
Always count down! Don“t ***** start with number one!!! - jcorn1, on 09/06/2008, -0/+16We've had dachsunds. Ours attacked a Rottweiller. Not necessarily a smart move but the dog had guts.
- lesoleil, on 09/06/2008, -3/+18Top Ten Most Destructive Dog Breeds Due To Human Inability To Train Them.
- metrognome, on 09/05/2008, -2/+17Isn't it kind of expected when you buy a puppy that they are going to cause damage? I can't tell you the number of Christmas Ornaments my dog ate the first two years we had him.
No worse than children I suppose. - ScottMcIntyre, on 09/05/2008, -1/+16I'd kind of expect the Great Dane to be at No 1, but the pint-sized destructive pooch, the Chihuahua, is at No 2. So much damage from such a small ball of fur :-)
- charlietuna, on 09/06/2008, -0/+13R.I.P. Mr. Wiener dog.

- bradhart2, on 09/06/2008, -1/+11chihuahuas are destructive for the same reason all other rats are destructive...
- peestandingup, on 09/06/2008, -1/+10For real. I mean, what kind of article is this?? Of course dogs are gonna be destructive if they got a ***** owner. It could have been ANY breed. These just happen to be the top 10 that came out in the wash. Just stupid.
- jcaino, on 09/06/2008, -0/+9? Typically mutts don't exhibit the same health problems/short life as purebred dog (from a neglectful breeder, anyway)
Certain purebred breeds experience problems with hip dysplasia, among other things.
Mutts don't have that problem due to cross-breeding. Its basic genetics. - Frozo, on 09/06/2008, -1/+10bradhart2:
Save it for therapy. - skunkman62, on 09/06/2008, -4/+12sicko, i see you're naked and in bed with your dog. did you just have sex?
- jcaino, on 09/06/2008, -0/+8My puppy is just about 6 months old (got him at 8 weeks) and he has yet to destroy anything that wasn't given to him to destroy. Well, that, and he loves sticks from outside. Not to mention he was completely house-broken by the time he hit 10 weeks. Breed? He's a mutt - Lab, Doberman, Collie, and Beagle. Mutt's are the best. He's cute as heck too: http://www.new.facebook.com/album.php?aid=52385&l= ...
- jamesrouse, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7Yeah my parents have one, I always call her the Jack Russell Terrorist.
- getrealnow, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6Agreed. People want to get certain breeds and just leave them around the house everyday. They are gonna get bored, have to much energy, get fat and want to entertain them selfs, sounds like my wife.
- groof, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6Is it possible for websites to finally realize that people can scroll and prefer to view things on one page? That would make me willing to read the article, more than just visit the site and realize what it is, and then close the tab out of frustration.
- BaoUnit, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6I'm going to dognap your dog! He's so ***** cute. Here's mine:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3234/2686724378_c9b ... - NeptuneZen, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6All *****'s are terrors. Worst damage he ever did though was almost get me trampled in an airport by a bunch of schoolgirls when he was a puppy. I swear those shrieks could have shattered glass.
- grantmoore3d, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5So the best solution is to have children and a dog, and let them loose in a field. Done and done!
- cracked22, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5my black lab loves my oak stair case....sigh
- Smogtdi, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5I have a great dane and all I can tell you, it's the laziest dog on earth; it's always sleeping. so the worst thing that can happen is the couch will smell like dog fur.
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5Yeah, great danes are the most laid-back dogs ever.
It's kind of weird, they're huge but make great apartment dogs.
They just need to run 10-15 minutes a day and they're fine. - inactive, on 09/06/2008, -1/+6Actually, YOU are the reason why millions of pets are euthanized.
All of my animals I either plucked off the street as strays, or were adopted from the APL.
Breeders are ***** scum who discourage people from going to shelters and adopting homeless animals. Then you act like a judgmental piece of ***** toward people who are giving abused/abandoned animals a home. My pets are my life, and you're a horrific ***** for judging me from one sentence posted on the internet.
STFU and go back to peddling your overpriced dogs. - mamfrog, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5My Great Dane popped my dads water bed wile playing with me =( twice... now my dad as a normal bed...
- bearmageddon, on 09/06/2008, -1/+6it was a sarah palin reference XD
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KgvVJBRa5k - LunaticFringe, on 09/06/2008, -5/+10That's ***** *****, citizen. Pitbulls are some of the sweetest, most loyal and obedient dogs I've ever met. Maybe if the politically motivated ***** stopped euthanizing them en masse, there would be actual hope for the breed. But no, they order them dead or neutered, and then only the crazy abused super-aggressive dogs get to be bred... to make more crazed and super-aggressive dogs. It's a human-created problem, just like every defective dog breed is a human-created problem.
Kennel Club eugenics needs to stop. - firebhaal, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5It's funny that it's exactly the same with children
- dudefather, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5Proof of how destructive chihuahuas can be when angered
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT4YbO_1mvA - TinternAbbot, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5There is no narration at all. No explanation. Horribly written.
- JessicaChrono, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4This might be the least intelligent article I've read in awhile. I'm a vet student and work for the Michigan Humane Society and I can tell you that it depends on the dog, the owners, and yes, certain breed characteristics. Beagles, for example, dig. A puppy naturally causes more damage due to chewing and potty training. Nice try, but silly article...
PS- Great Danes are lazy and wonderful family dogs. Mine housebroke in a day and never chewed a thing. - BradHAWK, on 09/06/2008, -3/+7Bridge to engine room: Scotty, set gallery to maximum suck.
- singingsox, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4Your dog is absolutely adorable.
Do want.
I have cats, they don't really destroy anything..except clawing a few sofas. - thesonofdarwin, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4I know from where you speak, as I was also our shelter's obedience trainer. Luckily we are relatively small enough that we make matching dog breeds with family types and personalities one of our main deciding factors for adoptions.
I agree that all dogs are equally capable of bad behavior. Where I'd disagree is in weighing the 'different types of bad behavior' equally. This particular subject is about destructive dog breeds - of course any dog from any breed is capable of destructive behavior, but there are breeds that tend to develop this behavior more readily. There is no doubt that you can at least substantially limit if not outright stop the behavior with work, but as you mentioned, certain purpose bred behaviors and instincts are always going to remain. But selective breeding is all about boosting the prevalence of certain behaviors and instincts in certain breeds.
This surely isn't a scientific study and I'm not treating it as one, but the idea that you can determine breeds with higher susceptibility to certain behaviors is a valid one. I 100% agree that humans are always at fault for such behavior. If people would choose breeds that fit their lifestyles shelters wouldn't have to struggle so hard every day to handle their intake. - adjustafresh, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3I owned a great dane (he died a couple years ago). What caused the most destruction - other than occasional chewing, and an accidental tail whack - were his claws. Our hardwood floor was severely scratched near the front door. It's not easy to trim the claws of a great dane (we used a Dremmel tool), but I strongly recommend it.
- gridbread, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3But Dachshunds are hilarious.

- Mithivh, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Holy ***** is that real?
The lady should be shot. - thesonofdarwin, on 09/06/2008, -1/+4I dugg you up because in this instance you are correct since the list was formed from insurance claims. However, certain breeds of dogs do have a higher tendency for such behavior. Of course there are exceptions, but certain breeds as a whole tend to be more neurotic and anxious as a result of their breeding, then combine that with other traits that they may have been bred for (eg destruction, fighting). It can [almost] always be alleviated by proactive pet owners. Almost.
- tacojohn48, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3I think all dogs should be crate trained. We used to have a Jack Russell that loved her crate.
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -1/+4Always.
I train dogs. I've never met a dog that couldn't be trained.
And I pick up traumatized, mistreated and aggressive Malinois, German Shepherds, Rottweilers and Pits (and others but much more rarely) at the SPCA to rehabilitate them for adoption.
All dogs are equally prone to bad behavior, different types of bad behavior, but they all have strong instincts.
They become neurotic because they aren't used for what they were breed for. Neurotics dogs always have no job. They are treated like a decoration or like babies.
Give the dog a purpose and he becomes calm and confident. - aflaks, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3yeah dude, I know! I had to replace my roomate because of that exact reason. I hate when people smell like cat piss.
- getrealnow, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Opps, I thought it was the other way around, thanks
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3that made me smile. thanks. that rarely happens on the internets.
- ell0bo, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2did you at least use peanut butter?
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -1/+3The problem with pets has always been the owners.
