- FutureGuy, on 11/06/2009, -1/+21I think the voting was rigged.
- Cat - earthtones, on 11/06/2009, -1/+21Why should they tell you, human?
- melodeath666, on 11/06/2009, -2/+19***** YOU DOLPHIN AND ***** YOU WHALE
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -1/+18are you serious?
Horse (Okay, no links. But you've heard of "horse sense," right? 'Nuff said.)
That evidence is simply irrefutable. - bluddystool, on 11/06/2009, -0/+15We all know in reality that mice are at the top of the list...followed by dolphins.
- douggmc, on 11/06/2009, -0/+15***** .. there is no way I'm second. I wear a tie for god's sake!
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -0/+10I've had 2 pet rats in my life, and besides my dogs they were for sure the smartest.
- lastmaster, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8my calculus homework, but they only averaged an 87%
- Crosshare, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8DORPHIN AND A WHARREE???
- bluddystool, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8As hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings, mice are the smartest.
- Rain12913, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6"he asked some ScientificBlogging readers to pick the smartest mammals...Below is the list that resulted."
Why is this interesting to anybody? This is just the result of a polling of a non-scientist sample about something only scientists should be asked. - ericdano, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6Um, missing Pigs?
Rabbits? As a rabbit owner, they are at least as smart as rats, if not cats. They can problem solve (mine has broken out of her cage before, and opened a gate to upstairs), learn their names, etc.
I really wish people would do a little "research" for these things. - EBFan2000, on 11/06/2009, -1/+7This is all wrong. The correct list should go something like:
1. Mice
2. Dolphins
3. Humans
And then everything else. - RonADiSH, on 11/06/2009, -2/+8eh....***** you.....
- Drakenking, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6Yes.
- JoeNaguib, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5Is that an actual question?
Mammary glands, they lactate, no eggs, fur, is it that hard to deduce whether an animal is a mammal or not? - EddiePotato, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5Rats will respond to the name you give them, and can learn puzzles and routines very quickly. They will also kick your ass in a philosophical debate.
- JoeNaguib, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4So apparently science isn't based on science any more. This "article" (along with just about every comment on this page) is SUBJECTIVE, where as qualitative, repeatable science is OBJECTIVE - That's what makes it science!
- frequentFlyer, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4YAH ***** BITCH ASS DOLPHINS AINT ***** TO NARWHALES
- askantik, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4Wtf? Where are dolphins, orangutans, gorillas, bonobos, bears, wolves (some studies have shown wolves learn by observation more readily than dogs), pigs, and Sasquatch? ... this is aside from the fact that it is very hard to "measure" non-human animal intelligence in the first place... Putting human tests on non-human animals and thinking it is definitive isn't science, so what we are left with is mostly assumptions. We can't even tell what is going on in the minds of other humans.
- khfn, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4Don't listen to Drakenking, mice are reptiles, duh. They are cold blooded and lay eggs.
- ghostrc, on 11/06/2009, -1/+5When I saw this headline, I knew this joke would be in the comments. Its just like when someone in another country does something amazing, everyone bashes Americans.
- Wakkyweed, on 11/06/2009, -2/+5Wait, what about pigs? I always heard they were very smart. Also, dolphins aren't quite as intelligent as most people think.
- davdev, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3considering how he doesn't know that killer whale is technically in the dolphin family and not the whale, I think we can toss this link out
- furatail, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3That brain is mooning me.
- Hopesteroni, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3Actually under testing, Goats and Pigs are smarter than dogs.
- ihatediggcom, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3***** article is *****
- DimensionalPunk, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3So only mammals can be smart? How about already mentioned birds and cephalopods? THIS ARTICLE IS CLASSIST!!!!
- tehWyman, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3People underestimate the intelligence of most animals.
- gutistg, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2My favorite mammal.
- sithmaster, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2What did they do that made you think they were smart?
- RonADiSH, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3Horse? my dad got a couple of horses and as far as i can tell they are pretty dumb
my dogs seems smarter - WiseGuy1020, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2You say that like cats figured out how to domesticate themselves. Cats don't "realize....they can just get a human to feed them," they were bred to.
Think about it. How many wild cats have you heard about "realizing" it is easier to just live with humans. None. - nard3456, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I'm not sure humans are smart enough to be on this list.
- UselessTrivia, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2No! It was Chicken and Cow!
- leif777, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3This list is carp....
- AZExile, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2You at least got my vote.
Otters ftw. - JoeNaguib, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Because mice have become increasingly smart in the past 3 years.
- EddiePotato, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Intelligence is a type of leverage, so an organism's potential to have either good or bad effects in the world scales exponentially as it increases.
- nepidae, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2ok my joke was terrible, but i was refering to hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings.
- EddiePotato, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I always figured the term referred to someone who understands how to work with horses. Before the automobile came around, such a skill was surely invaluable, on par with "common sense".
Horses are generally nervous and easily spooked. Doesn't seem like it would be a compliment to compare someone's temperament or behavior with that of a horse. - JoeNaguib, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3... What are you basing your knowledge (or lack there of) of a cat's brain on?
- anokun7, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2that is so not what I expected, I thought the pig was quite smart.
- linagee, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2weather?
- BubblesTheChimp, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Goodbye and thanks for all the fish!
- linagee, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1bacon
- WiseGuy1020, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1That must have been Chuck Norris's craw-fish.
- NJSlacker, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2I don't know weather to digg you up for the pig comment, or down for the dolphin. Pigs ARE smarter than dogs, but dolphins really are as smart as people think they are.
- WiseGuy1020, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2Does not mean cats are really smart, just that cat-owners are really stupid.
- pinkcherry, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Oh crap. I forgot this was an article about mammal intelligence. My fail :(
