- Rain12913, on 02/22/2009, -0/+7I'm completely pulling this one out of my ass, but I think you might find that one's capacity for finding animals cute is directly proportional to their distance from an agrarian lifestyle. Societies where people are raised in close proximity to animals, whether it's raising them for food or hunting them, probably see less of the "cute animal phenomenon". It's easy for us to find baby animals cute because our only exposure to them is in novel settings, like in the media or as pets, where we aren't punished for feeling this way.
As you've pointed out, it certainly would not be beneficial for prehistoric man to run around after cute cougar cubs. Not many of us were raised in settings where our existence depended on our ability to very quickly kill and consume said cute animals, however. If you look at a modern-day person living in rural South America, however, I think you would find that they spend a whole lot less time thinking about how cute baby animals are and more time thinking of them as useful resources or potential dangers.
With that said, you can be sure that the trait of finding human babies extremely cute and desirable has been heavily selected for, and as the video pointed out, it is simply the brain's projection of these human traits onto other living things that accounts for this phenomenon. So I think you could say it's a combination of this trait being selected for over time and our removal from the mindset that living animals = pre-food that explains why our ancestors didn't become extinct after trying to cuddle one too many bear cubs. - iEATcatFOOD, on 02/22/2009, -0/+7Babies are ugly. I like others link religion to God because religion is as organized worship of some God or group of Gods, its as simple as that.
Science does not dictate that there is no God. It's just simply improbable. I know the absence of proof is not proof and all that jazz.
If there is a God... they obviously prefer the hands off approach to say least.
The ideas behind most major religions were made up by our superstitious ancestors. I think there few genuine believers in modern time most people just turn to God only in times of impending doom, remember 911? Think about, in the past people believed disease was the work of devil. Now most of us know better. What was once called demon possession is now better known as Dissociative Identity Disorder(multiple personalty disorder.)
Much of modern theology is self contradictory. I am to believe that God is some benevolent all seeing being, right? If everything happens for a reason you have to explain the very worst of humanity.
Why did the holocaust happen?
Why were/are people enslaved?
Why do we have wars?
Why was my family member murdered?
It's all part of this benevolent God's master plan, right?
Not too mention that for what ever reason Gods only seem to speak to people in isolated regions. As far I know there has been no documentation that even suggests that any religion was simultaneously growing in two remote locations of the world which would be the biggest proof of God if there was one. Do Gods just pick a random location on the map then pick a random individual and tell them to spread their name? You would have to believe that for some reason something that is powerful enough to have created a thriving living world in nothing more then seven days somehow lacks the social skills to communicate individually to it's creations. (used Christianity but this can be applied to other religions)
I honestly want to believe in God again, it would mean that everything really does have some purpose that we are all important as individuals and that we will live forever in some form. But the blocks just don't forget together like that. You have to over look too much and even if you just started from scratch and tried to find reasons to believe I doubt you would find much evidence.
Life is nothing more then an unplanned pregnancy. -
