- DeskFlyer, on 11/07/2009, -0/+46Great, just what we need - invisible bears. Stephen Colbert's worst nightmare.
- peteyb1313, on 11/07/2009, -0/+31A genetic mutation occurs, that mutation allows the bear to fish more efficiently, it becomes stronger, reproduces, grows as a specie, bam, evolution.
- mwtapp, on 11/07/2009, -4/+33Darwin would be proud.
- UncommonSense, on 11/07/2009, -0/+17Ninja bears.
- DeskFlyer, on 11/07/2009, -1/+18They're just retards. Ignore them.
- Rain12913, on 11/07/2009, -0/+12I've always been confused about which part of evolution people disagree with. Do they deny mutation? Do they deny that a mutation can potentially make something more fit to survive and reproduce? Do they deny that animals that survive and reproduce have offspring who share their traits? Which part do they deny?
- Moralogic, on 11/07/2009, -0/+9If you have them define the process of evolution to their understanding, almost every time they are completely wrong in how evolution works. DavidNiven or whatever his username is has been told how evolution works hundreds of times, but refuses to actually pay attention, then repeat his same tired old arguments that have already been defeated.
They don't really disagree with any of it, they just completely have no idea about it, or else they would be like, "well no crap that is how it is." - Crimeodial, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6It's always awesome to see evolution in action, isn't it?

- Stevosaurous, on 11/07/2009, -2/+7I for one welcome our new spirit bear overlords
- Anchorbird, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4That's the Spirit!!
- charlietuna, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3Are you a steelhead trout?
- weirdo50, on 11/07/2009, -1/+4Evolution is awesome.
- rectagon, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3They are called Kermodi bears... and I lived in their neighbourhood for 11 years (Kitimat) and never saw one. Our friends from Saskatchewan came out to visit and saw one on their way out of town. Totally unfair.
- LilJimmyNordin, on 11/08/2009, -0/+3Once again, an example of how white bears are just trying to keep the black bear down.
- Atario, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2They will inevitably say that mutations can only be bad, and that this can't be denied because it's "just common sense".
So, like DeskFlyer said... - cyberthief, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2I saw one just north east of terrace, also one up near Meziadin. There are a fair number of the bears in northern bc. They are pretty cool.
- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2Why do people always bring up the eye example? It started with simple sensitivity to light and then progressively being able to make out more and more detail until you could clearly see. It probably would happen "fast" as being able to see clearly is generally a pretty huge advantage.
And it's not like kangaroo pouches just slowly flipped around. If a sideways pouch was useless, there is no particular reason it would be passed down. Just looking at humans there are pretty vast physical mutations when cells don't split right early on (like extra limbs). Become a scientist and try and figure out how the pouch changed direction.
Not being able to explain something is NOT proof against it.
And a bear will always be a bear. Until it turns white and can catch food easier. Then maybe it migrates south and doesn't need it's hair at all anymore. So it loses it and so it can swim better. Then we have epic shark vs. bear battles. - cyberthief, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2They are awesome bears, but they do not rely on salmon as 100% of their diet. Most northern bears eat a ton or grass, clover and other legumes, and a ton of berries. There is also a large population of black tailed deer on the islands they are on.
- onemanriot, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2This reminds me of a book I had to read during middle school: http://www.amazon.com/Touching-Spirit-Bear-Ben-Mik ...
- rilus, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Not really, no.
- rilus, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1@jp12380,
Regardless of what you want to call it, micro or macro evolution, all of it's evolution. Just remember that your so-called microevolution is to macroevolution what a step is to walking. - ep53, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1Dugg for badassly cute bear video.
- jp12380, on 11/07/2009, -1/+1I suppose it depends on who it is you are refering to. There is micro evolution and macro evolution, most people agree with micro. That there are certain traits that come about through mutations that can be beneficial that is then passes onto it's offspring. Macro is that over time, a mouse like creature had so many of these mutations that it eventually turned into humans. Macro is where the sticking point is for some people.
If you believe that a single celled organism turned into all life on earth, that at the very least seems to conflict with the account of creation in the Bible. - TheAbsintheHare, on 11/07/2009, -1/+1I've had this conversation with my cousin a few times. According to him (he doesn't believe in evolution), scenarios like with this bear are evidence of adaptation, and adaptation is different from evolution. Adaptation involves a bear (or other animal) having minor feature about them change, like color or say diet. However, he believes that a bear will always be a bear, and that extreme mutations like the bear learning how to breathe underwater are impossible. His argument for this involves things like marsupials and eyeballs. In the marsupials case, most have upside down pouches but kangaroos have right side up pouches. According to evolution, kangaroos evolved a right side up pouch because they don't dig through the dirt and thus don't need it, but in the interim between upside down and right side up, their babies would have kept falling out of their pouch and dying, so how could they have passed on the mutation? As for eyeballs, they are such almost infinitely intricate devices, requiring such exact mutations in an exact order, having occurred alongside other very precise mutations, that it shouldn't exist. We can see that most life forms have eyes, thus eyes must have evolved fairly early on, but was there enough time between when we believe the first multi celled organism evolved, and when we believe the first life form with a functioning eye evolved, to have evolved such a complex structure?
I'm not saying evolution is an impossibility, and I don't believe he is saying that either, but as with all theories, we have to analyze and ask questions for ourselves. - thelastcivilian, on 11/07/2009, -2/+2I CAN STILL SEE IT
- rectagon, on 11/07/2009, -2/+1Yes, it's hard to believe how this came about, isn't it.
