He may not have intended harm, but he did. He should have been aware of what was happening with his horses.
In this case, I really hope that the punishment fits the crime. - BugMeNot2, on 04/15/2009, -3/+11OMG PONIES
- scooterbaga, on 04/15/2009, -2/+9"...one in more horrifying condition than the next."
Man, what are the odds they would've inspected in that order... - iamnotyou, on 04/14/2009, -0/+6thats sad
- anteup, on 04/15/2009, -2/+7Both of those things are 110% worthy of coverage. That doesn't mean horses aren't either though. It doesn't have to be one or the other.
- inactive, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5disgusting
- specter19, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4Not to mention there where 177 horses, thats kind of a lot of animals for one person to take care of alone. Unless that's the reason they were all mistreated.....
- copypastry, on 04/15/2009, -1/+5Sounds like a pretty severe case of criminal neighgligence.
- Travelsonic, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4It was Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA, not PETA.
I'd rather Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA do it right than PETA ***** it up. - LawScholar, on 06/25/2009, -1/+4This is SPCA. PETA doesn't actually HELP animals, they just act like it. Kudos to SPCA for actually improving things. :)
Shameless plug: As an ASPCA member and contributor, they really do some great stuff without getting in your face about your lifestyle. Give it a look if you love animals but hate extremism. - scooterbaga, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3I understand the 'captain of the ship' is responsible for his crew... But I have to wonder if it's not hired-hands that ***** this up. If this guy is a 'prominent breeder' then you'd think he'd have been doing a better job at this at some point. I'm pretty sure there's a little more to this story. It's pointless to speculate... However it seems odd that someone who does this for a living treated his animals so poorly.
Of course USA Today will have a follow-up to this... - Travelsonic, on 04/15/2009, -1/+3Before people say it...
It was Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA, not PETA that did this. (though IMO, I wouldn't be surprised if PETA tried to claim credit for parts of this).
I'd rather Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA do it right than have PETA ***** it up. - scooterbaga, on 04/15/2009, -0/+2Only you can stop neighgligence...
- anotherjack, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2We do have fun with science and technology on Digg, and it is why a lot of folks come here. People will always have a good time while some disaster goes on someplace. We do what we can, but don't expect fun to die while we grieve. A battery powered battery charger is funny.
Keep in mind not everybody has the stomach for this kind of story. - xxmjumpman23xx, on 04/15/2009, -0/+2so messed up
- copypastry, on 04/15/2009, -0/+2buried for "epic fail"
- inactive, on 04/15/2009, -0/+2WTF?
- jhdteacher, on 04/15/2009, -0/+2best cared for animals in the world (owners of "animals-for-profit" would NEVER abuse their "bread-and-butter")
http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/25163444/ - JRemmy, on 04/15/2009, -1/+3Paragallo = Epic Fail! I don't care if he intended to harm them or not. What's done is done and now he should have to pay the price. I say he should be forced to live under the same conditions the horses received for at least a month, and then imprison the bastard.
Cattle Prod Paragallo FOR THE WIN! - momedefome, on 04/15/2009, -2/+4That's ***** up , I usually hate PETA , but this is one case I hope they do something about it , poor animals
- manzplan, on 04/16/2009, -0/+280% of race horses are NOT bread and butter.. hte majority of them DO NOT make a profit for their owners...
sure the winner of the Kentucky Derby does.. but that horse costs just as much to feed and care for as does the $1200 claimer horse...
which horse do you think they will cut corners on??? - anotherjack, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2"Rescuers are straining to meet the needs of the horses. Columbia-Greene, which has an annual budget of $500,000 that will be severely strained by this emergency, is seeking donations through its website "
www.cghs.org - mikemehak, on 04/16/2009, -1/+35000 deaths a year is a lot, and too many.
But keep in mind most tracks have several thousand horses each. These statistics track all deaths.
This is any horses that has run within the last year (varies by state/province) This includes horses that die of colic, natural causes, etc...
If a horse dies in a trailer accident, goes home and breaks it's leg in a field this is counted.
There are definitely things that need to be changed in this industry. And many things are changing everyday. But many stats are skewed to make the industry look worse than it is.
This is an industry that can be very enjoyable for many people and the horses aswell. Unfortunately a few bad people tend to spoil it for everyone.
After working with many horse rescue programs and re-homing programs I've found most often the worse treated animals don't come from the race track. People who have horses as pets, lawn ornaments, etc... and can't afford to keep them.
The number one thing this industry needs is more money put into re-homing programs to prevent horses going for meat/slaughter. And the states/provinces need to shut down horse slaughter houses. - inactive, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2Such a sad story.
- mikemehak, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2I grew up at "bush tracks" and this is not the case for most of them.
This may be the result of certain bad people, but it would be unfair to say that was even close to be normal acceptable behavior.
This might have been the case 40 years ago, but things have changed for the better at most tracks.
Most bush tracks are in fact the opposite. Many of the horses there are treated as pets as there is no real money involved. - askantik, on 04/16/2009, -1/+3PETA has nothing to do with this because PETA are a bunch of douchebags and should not be inherently thought to be associated with anything related to animal cruelty issues or animal rights.
On a side note, I'll never understand why horses are so important (at least in America) but cows, pigs, sheep, and chickens are just meat. It's one thing to not give a ***** about any animals-- but why some and not others? I know that we have a different cultural "relationship" with horses than other livestock, but it's still nothing compared to dogs, so I don't see why they're essentially in the same category as dogs. But then again, I don't see how anyone can not have compassion like this for all animals, so... - CColtManM, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2It's pathetic really that this has so few diggs and so few commenters, yet this somehow has made 7 times more diggs... http://digg.com/comedy/Battery_Powered_Battery_Cha ...
- camilos007, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2Instead of instinctively mentioning PETA, how about giving some constructive ideas or opinions on this article?
- manzplan, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2go to a "bush track" and see if you still feel that way..
horses are tied 4-5 wide to the side of a pick up truck.. ya know.. the ones where the mirrors are off.. they floor the truck and those who can keep up go on to "race".. those that cannot.. well.. they cannot even stand up... so... - anotherjack, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2I checked out the website for the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA. They say they are not part of the "ASPCA" and don't receive government funding. They are kinda swamped, to say the least. They have 76 horses to fix up and give away. The horses are free to good homes.
http://www.cghs.org/horses.htm - mikemehak, on 04/16/2009, -1/+2This isn't really a PETA style case. I would be surprised if they got very involved.
This is a very sad story. - lingum, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1Goodbye Horses.
- FuzzplugJones, on 05/20/2009, -0/+0CLIMAX
- lingum, on 04/16/2009, -1/+1Ponies are useful. Africans are not.
- inactive, on 04/15/2009, -7/+4PETA is not happy and showing a long face.
- inactive, on 04/15/2009, -8/+4Anyone want to cover the shocking cruelty cases against teens being sex trafficked in our world? Or perhaps the thousands of African women being raped and killed every month?
Oh wait, ponies are cuter. The American Media is bleh - earthceltic, on 04/15/2009, -6/+2I bet you eat a lot of bacon and hamburgers.
